Kara's First Fight With The Gang
I look up in complete and utter shock as the giant robotic foot lifted off the ground and came back again with increasing speed to slam down on the few party-goers who were trying to escape.
Right before the foot was about to make impact, it suddenly stops precociously above people's heads. I scan my eyes closer to the scene and see Connor in the midst of the scared people, holding up the robotic foot with his two hands, fighting against the metallic force with all his might.
I look away from the destruction and quickly set about lifting up falling rubble from those that were trapped under it.
I first started with the guy who, just alittle while ago, had called me gorgeous. He was now lying before me, limp and nearly lifeless.
He fought for consciousness and withered in pain as I lift him up and carried him to an already fallen section of the building where he'd be safe.
I repeated the action several times with other innocent people, most of which were maimed , crippled or disfigured. When I was certain all the civilians were safe, I proceed to look for my friends.
I rush over to where I had last seen Connor, Megan, and Kal. Seeing as Connor was still holding up the robotic foot while people escape, it must have meant him, and the rest, got out unharmed.
Heavy rocks rained down before me, cutting off my path, in fury I punch at the fallen rock wall till it began to give way to me.
"You know there's a quicker way of doing that, Blondie," Wally says as he speeds up next to me. He was standing there fully costumed, but Artemis was nowhere to be found.
"Where's Artemis!?" I asked him in a slight panic. I feared for the worst.
"Relax," Wally tells me with raised arms, "she's about 50 feet away from here." Then he laughed to himself as if he'd done a bad thing. "She's not going to like that one bit."
I nod to him with a serious face, then we set to work destabilizing the rocks lodged in front of us.
Twenty seconds later we burst through the roof of the debris and I see Megan and Kyle propped up against a crumpling pillar column. I see Megan's green Martian blood and Kal's red Atlantean blood trickle down their faces.
I bite down a strangled scream of fear and race towards them, but Wally beat me to it.
"Are you guys alright!?" I hear Wally ask them first, then bends down to check on them.
Instead of doing so I take two steps back and use my x-ray vision to get a closer look at them.
"Megan's internal structure is mostly fine," I inform Wally, with a deadpan expression, "but Kal has a cracked rib." I train my laser x-ray beam on his chest. "On the right, lower second one from the top."
"We need to get you out of here first," Wally informs a groaning Kal, then proceeds to place his arm under Kal's leg and neck. "I'll be back for you soon, Megan." Wally then tells her.
He turns and gives me a serious block, "Stay with her."
"Of course," I'm nod to him. What did he think? I would just leave my friend while she was visibly injured?
With that Wally nods back, and disappears in a burst of light.
I look around for the team. Over by the entrance Connor had successfully saved the escapees. I couldn't find Barbara but I could see Zatanna dislodging herself from the fallen rubble with her magic.
"Hold on Megan, we'll get you help soon..." I reassure her as I hold onto her hand.
It was ice cold.
"Kal's up in the bioship," Wally says, appearing in front of me in a burst of speed.
"Take her!" I say as I lift Megan up and place her in his arms. "Go! Run! Now!!" I scream at Wally.
He doesn't wait to hear me say it twice as he bolts from the spot.
"Can you make yourself useful and do something?!" I hear Connor's grumbly voice yell at me as he forcefully runs past me, then with the help of his super strength uses all of his might and launches himself upward, jumping into the giant robot.
I glare at him. But instead of doing as he says and fight the giant robot, I run over to Zatanna and help her out.
"You okay?" I ask, helping her pull the rest of her body out from under giant boulders she held up with her magic.
"I think my leg is broken" she grits out, I see her visibly wince as she gets up and tries to place down her left leg.
I quickly scan it, "Yes, it's definitely broken," I inform her. "A clean break down the middle."
"Shit!" she cries out. "This could take me anywhere between 2 minutes to 2 hours to fix with magic!"
She looks at the scene of her fellow friends fighting and you could see the remorse and disappointment in her face.
"Don't worry, we got this" I told her confidently, hoping to lift her spirits, however slight. "Now what we need to do is get you to the bioship and get you patched up."
I easily pick her up and was begin to fly her out of our location when Wally zips on by again.
"Anybody else need my services?" He asked, eagerly looking around.
"Wally!" I call out to him. "You need to help the others defeat that thing!" I pointed at the giant silver-grey robot. "I'll take Zatanna to the bioship."
"No way!" he says up at me. He runs across some falling pillars till he reached close to where I hovered, "I'm on Rescue Duty." He says, "You have flight and super strength, you'll be of more use taking down that giant metal tin can."
He reaches out his hands for Zatanna, reluctantly I fly down and place her in his arms.
"Now go get him," Wally smiles at me encouragingly.
I panic alittle. I wasn't ready to face the giant robot, especially not with the others here looking. What if I mess up?
I was much better off on rescue duty with Wally.
"What about Barbara?" I asked evasively. "I haven't seen her! I better stay back and check the rubble for her."
"What do you mean?" Zatanna asks through the pain. "Barb's up there."
She lifts her hand feebly and points up at the robot's face.
Up top on the robot's chrome head, as small as a dot, jumping between the eyes and ears, sure enough was Barbara, swinging about and causing whatever little damage she could.
Nightwing was also there battling, with Connor by his side.
"Now get up there and help them!" Zatanna yells at me, "Fight!"
I turned away from them as Wally races away with Zatanna, and gulp audibly.
Instead of just flying up and attacking, I flew over to where Nightwing stood on the robot's shoulder.
"Any instructions, Captain?" I asked with a hint of humor. The humor was there to hide my blinding panic.
"Do whatever you can to take down the robot! And fast!" Nightwing yelled while jumping off the shoulder, fighting to keep hold of his grappling hook while dangling from the robot's chest area. "We need to get it away from the public! And to not harm any more civilians!"
"You've never fought a giant robot before?" Connor asked demeaningly, then bends down and begins punching several holes in the shoulder blade.
I always fight giant robot that's the problem, I think to myself worriedly.
"Kara?!" Barbara calls out to me from beside the robot's head, then looks me directly in the eyes, she probably knew what was going on and what I was thinking. "Look around you! Stop this!" She simply says.
I pause and look down. I see the mass of people running in panic, and the amount of chaos and destruction the robot left behind. I close my eyes tightly and took a deep breath, she was right...
Time to end this nonsense.
"Steer clear!!!" I yell out to them at the top of my lungs.
I fly back, a little distance away from the robot, and take in a gigantic deeply big breath, so much so that my stomach and chest popped out and nearly burst.
"Wow!" Barbara exclaimed. She uses her grappling hook and dives down from the top of the robot, grabbing Nightwing and Connor on her way down.
I blew out all the breath I'd taken in and it came out in an icy white torrent of snow.
It covers the entire robot, freezing it solid and stopping it in its tracks. I don't wait a beat as I fly down and circle it, frying its limbs off with my laser beams. First the two legs, then two arms, then the neck.
The giant robot broke apart as a jigsaw puzzle, gravity pushing it back down to earth. As its head was the last to hit the ground, I swoop down and land on its chrome dome head.
I jab my two fist straight through the titanium metal, grabbed the edges of it and rip it apart in two. There was a hollow alcove in the head with a seat placed inside.
But there was no one there.
"What the-!?" Nightwing says as he approached the head.
I jump down and tilt the opening I'd tore, showing the inside to everyone.
"Nothing?!" Connor asked in outrage, and looks at me accusatorily. "What did you do!?" He roared in fury. "You messed something up!"
I bite down on my lip. "I did nothing wrong, this was how I found it." I say defensively, gritting my teeth in anger.
"Kara is right. There's nothing in here" Barbara said as she takes a peek inside the robot's head. "But there is a note," she adds.
At this point, Wally returns. "What did I miss?" He asked.
"Everything." Connor says grumpy.
I see Barbara, and the whole upper half of her torso, disappear into the head of the robot as she leans in to the red leather seat. She comes back out with a note in hand.
"Read it," Nightwing says authoritatively.
"No duh genius," I say with arms folded.
Everyone gives me a weird look.
"Well it's obvious, isn't it?" I asked with a confused shrug.
When you work alongside Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, saying things out loud aren't always necessary. You are expected to just do them.
And funny enough, without me even knowing, I had actually said that thought out loud.
I cringe and blush bright red as everyone gives me a slightly annoyed look. Oh dear God just kill me!
Wally coughs, "Well...we, also, worked alongside the big guys too!" He says mock confidently.
"Individually..." Nightwing says, "as sidekicks...Not all of them at once."
He looks at me, "Impressive." He praises, but says it with a hint of what was either jealousy or envy.
Before I melted into the ground in utter shame, I turn to Barbara, "What does the note say?!" I asked eagerly, welcoming any sort of distraction before I hyperventilate.
She flips it over aggressively, looking extremely confused. "All it says is – 'prototype'..."
"Prototype!?" Wally exclaims in surprise. "That was just the prototype? I'd hate to see the finished product!"
"The better question would be-" I begin to say with a worried look, "-who's prototype is it...?"
