Prologue
"It's a girl!" The doctor proclaimed, handing the newborn to her mother.
"She's beautiful." She cooed over the baby wriggling slightly in her arms. The father right behind her cradled the baby girl's head in his hand.
"What's her name?" A doctor with a clip board approaches and asks.
"Eliza Ann." The baby wiggles as if in reaction to her name, before drifting off to sleep.
The Mother is rolled in and settles down into her room, still cuddling the baby in her arms. After only a few minutes alone, a man in a suit opens the door, stepping into the room.
His dark hair was slicked back and wore a matching dark suit, "It's time." He smiles towards Eliza, who has begun to whine in her sleep.
"Already?" The father asks the man who simply responds with a slight nod.
Eliza begins to cry, her mother tries to console her, "It's okay, 'Liza, you'll be right back, this man is going to keep a good watch over you." Eliza's lip quivers as she is handed over to the man in the suit. He cradles her and takes her out into the hall, closing the room door behind him.
He sets her down in a carriage and begins rolling her down the hall past countless rooms. But after awhile the doors stop lining the halls and he walks down an endless corridor, followed by two other suited people also with carriages and new born babies in them.
Around the corner a white door appears. With a swipe of his card, the man with Eliza enters, the door firmly shutting right behind him. The white halls ahead of him seem to extend forever, lined with doors to secret rooms.
The man decisively picks one, sliding his card again to gain entry. The door clicks and pushes Eliza into the dark room. He flips a switch and the room becomes brightly lit, almost blinding with the white room. In that room was a small control panel in front of a large viewing window that overlooked a crib in the middle of another white room.
"Come now, child." He lifts her out, holding her as he swipes to access the room with the crib. Another 'click' and he steps in, setting Eliza down into the plush crib.
He steps out robotically, making sure the door locked behind him, he proceeds to the panel and looks on through the window. Swiping his card once again and pressing a button a whirring starts in the other room. And now all he has to do is look idly on as it happens.
A shaft of light blue light shines down on the gazing baby, still trying out her limbs and kicking at the air. After a few minutes the light shuts off and a squeal of a baby is heard. The man walks in calmly as usual, carrying the screaming Eliza back to the carriage, proceeding to place tiny white silky gloves on her hands. He turns the lights off behind him and begins back to her awaiting parents.
He knocks on the door and enters, both parents excited to hold their first child again. "How was she?" The father asks, receiving her from the man.
"As well as they all do, sir. Good day." and with that he leaves.
The mother sits straighter in bed, "Oh, I wonder how it looks." She gently rubs Eliza's tiny hands to soothe the pain, already calming her down.
"We'll know someday." The father encourages, "Ha, probably sooner than you will want." He jokes.
She cradles Eliza up against her chest, "Yeah, probably." She agrees as Eliza falls fast asleep.
