A History Lesson

"Two weeks! My dress hasn't even been finished yet!" Mercedes groans as Serenity picks at her school lunch.

"Really? I thought your mother would be on top of things."

"She was and then she got so busy. Everyone did. It's like since last week everything blew up." Des sighs.

"Yeah, blew up," she trails off. Everything had been off since her last encounter meant with Liam. He's not exactly avoiding her, but he's not exactly kidnapping her and keeping her all to himself either.

She didn't know where they stood. He was being super weird and distant again, but not towards the pack. Just towards her. Things moved along quite well actually. With Liam and the pack.

Des also actually. She had stopped avoiding Serenity, and things seem to have gone back to normal. Or as normal as things could get for a couple of werewolf teenagers.

The bell rang signaling the end of lunch and Des groaned yet again, "history with Mr. Edward. Brutal."

The two stood up and went to go throw away their trash.

"I heard the lesson is at least a bit interesting," she continued talking, "a few of the girls in my last class were talking about it because it relates to the ball. Something about an urban legend on a girl who went missing about two decades ago."

The two walk out of the cafeteria shoulder to shoulder, "an urban legend? For werewolf history?" Serenity asks her friend.

Des shrugs, "no clue. Although the girls in my fourth period are kind of up there sometimes."

Serenity laughs, "up there meaning she's an absolute airhead."

"I can't even defend her there." She facepalms.

Together they walk into the classroom and take a seat in the middle row. This was one of the few classes they had together. It would be another minute before their teacher walks into the classroom.

"Good afternoon class!" Mr. Edwards walks in speaking in his ever so enthusiastic voice. The portly man always seemed to be in a great mood right after lunch.

"Today we're going to venture off on a different topic. Since we don't have school next week and seeing as so many of you have already check out being overwhelmed with ball preparations," he paused to let everyone get a word in about the ball.

The girls gasped and squealed about their dresses and dates. While the guys sighed about the girls making a fuss about the whole thing.

Serenity looked around as they did so. She had nothing to say. After all, she didn't have a dress or a date. There was nothing to say about the matter seeing as she was probably working the whole event, so there was no need for a dress or a date.

"Okay, okay, quite now. You do probably want to have a pen and paper out to take notes. There will be a quiz on Friday over the topic." He clapped his hands as everyone groaned as they shuffled to get out the proper materials to take notes.

"Can someone tell me the origins behind February the 14th?"

Serenity looked around waiting for someone to raise their hand and answer the question. When no one did she raised hers.

"Ah yes, Serenity, go ahead."

"It is the humans holiday of love," she paused. Mr. Edwards prepared himself to tell the omega she wasn't exactly correct, but then she continued, "this event was started by the Romans in the third century A.D. when Emperor Claudius II executed two men — both named Valentine — on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day."

"Correct," the teacher coughed under his breath, "did everyone get that down? That will be on the test." He wrote a few pointers on the whiteboard and continued on, "The Feast of Saint Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14 in honor of Saint Valentine of Rome, who died  in AD 269."

Everyone quickly scribbled on their papers trying to keep up with their teacher.

"Now that's the human's frank history of this month, but ours, ours is a bit more recent. Merely a few decades old, but let's start at the beginning. Does anyone know the top five packs 20 years ago?"

A girl in the back raised her hand, "The midnight band lead by Alpha Anthony, Lightridge lead by Alpha Neil, Half ridge lead by Alpha Rochelle, Bronze claw lead by Alpha Dimitri, and the last one. I think we all know the story there."

And they did because it was their alphas story.

"Yes, yes. Thank you very good," Mr. Edwards put all of the names of packs along with alphas on the dry erase board, "Since then all of these packs have shifted in name, and leaders, but mostly all are still in the top five. Alpha Xzaviers spot however was replaced by our pack. Other than that Ranks tend to not change very often.

Now this story and spot in history tend to get overlooked because of Alpha Xavier's story. At the time since his pack was in the big five, no one was worried about a pack in the top ten. That's how Pheobe's story tends to get overlooked."

Serenity's head pops up. She's heard that name before.

"This happened about six years after Alpha Xzavier had already gone mad. Big preparations were being made for our alpha since he was still a boy, and history was still being made. Pheobe's pack was climbing ranks. Seeing as she was the pack right next to Xzaviers when a lot of people abandoned his pack they went to hers, but at the time it was not hers, but her fathers."

Intently listening Serenity drank in every word while attempting to write everything down.

"She was a miracle child. A said gift from the moon goddess. Hense her name Pheobe. Now the phenomenon that was said to have produced Pheobe was a super blue blood moon. Can anyone tell me what this is?"

Des feeling proud to know what he was actually talking about raised her hand, "It refers to a total lunar eclipse this is, where the moon is completely eclipsed it takes on a reddish color. During this eclipse, direct sunlight is completely blocked by the earth's shadow. The only light that can be seen is refracted through the earth's shadow, and this light looks red just like the sunset."

"Yes, excellent! Now the super blue blood moons happens once every 2,380 full Moons or so. A very rare occurrence. On January 30, 40 years ago Luna Eden of the steel crest pack woke up nine-month pregnant after previously been diagnosed barren. Right after this phenomenon occurred."

No one spoke a word. Everyone just stared at him not believing a word he spoke. After all, how could they? Everyone knew the steel crest pack was full of loonies and burned downed almost 10 years ago killing all of the pack members.

"Impossible." A boy in the back spoke up, "She just woke up nine months pregnant about to give birth, I'm calling BS. Everyone knows that pack was full of loonies. Despite their rank, the pack wouldn't have burnt down if they were under the moon goddess's protection. She could have helped them."

Mr. Edward shook his head, "The pack was lead to insanity because of the disappearance of Pheobe and her daughter Selene. Before their disappearance, they were rising and fast. Word had gotten around about the miracle child. Pheobe went pack to pack visiting and blessing everyone. The miracles she was able to perform were truly above our time."

"A demigoddess just produced a kid? Just like that?" Serenity found herself challenging the teacher's word.

"Yes, just like that. While traveling around she found her mate-"

Someone in the front row cut him off, "oh so her mate was a powerful alpha!" the girl smiled brightly.

"No," Mr. Edwards sighed, "He was an ordinary packmate. In fact, I believe he was an omega."

Sernity couldn't believe her ears. An omega climbed the ranks. A very rare occurrence. Especially now that mates don't exist.

"But how did she go missing?"

"No one knows. Six months after giving birth to her daughter Selene she just vanished. Like she never even existed. Depending on who you ask somesay the moon goddess wanted her daughter back. Others say she never existed, but that couldn't have been true because there were pictures of her. Her vivid green eyes still hold lots of life. If I can I'll see if I can find one."

Serenity's hand ached from all the information she wrote down.

"How does this all coincide with Valentine's day," Des asked rather confused by all the information presented in front of her.

"Pheobe and her daughter went missing a week after Valentine's day during an unexpected solar eclipse. Now the dates I want you to remember specifically. . ."

Serenity zoned out. Her birthday was February 22. The day she was found abandoned on the pack's doorstep. What did this all mean?

Liam took a seat at his desk taking a deep breath. It had been a hectic morning. Renovations on the ballroom are supposed to be done in a few days and they were falling short, so he took the liberty to help them out.

He had been up since seven am making sure things moved along more quickly and helping out where he could. The physical part was the easier part for him, and he was able to help them get them caught up to schedule by a day.

"Liam, we're all getting suit fitted today. Aston and myself. Along with you. The plan was to go into town and get fitted, but our music vendors fell through last minute. Instead, she'll be coming to us so I can get that situated."

Liam nodded his head, "What time will she be here?"

"Six after her shop in town closes at five."

"Okay, ask Kensley to watch the teens while they're on patrol today while we are busy."

Mateo nods his head, "got it."

"And the orchestra? What happened with them?"

"They will no longer be attending the ball?"

Liams brow scrunched in confusion.

"A few packs that have sent in reservations to attend have back out, because of threats."

"Threats? How many packs have backed out?" Liam cursed under his breath. It's just one problem after the next.

"Yes, threats. From rouges in their area. Six-packs have withdrawn their reservations thus far."

"Why wasn't I informed about this earlier?"

Mateo nervously scratched the back of his neck, "I thought I could get the issue resolved, but have yet to been able to."

"Okay, I'm going to need the pack's names along with their alphas and phone numbers. I will personally call and resolve the issue. For now, I will visit the middle and high school orchestras. We can have them do a special performance," Liam began to flip through a few papers on his desk.

Mateo began to flip through the papers in the binder he's holding, "ahh here's a list of the packs and their info. Great idea about the middle and high schoolers. It's only-" he looks down at his watch, "1:47. Classes are still in session. We can ride over there and have a talk with the teachers while schools still in session?"

Liam nods, "yes, give me fifteen minutes to compose a few emails to these alpha's about a good time to call then we can leave."

The last bell of the day finally rang signaling the end of the day. Serenity was the first one up and out of the classroom. After the day she had, she wanted nothing more than to go up to her room and lock herself inside.

As she walked down the hall Des quickly bobbed through the crowd trying to catch up with her.

"Hey hey, what's the rush?"

Sernity looked to her friend, "um nothing. Just really want to leave."

"Ugh I know right, but have you heard?

She shook her head having no clue what she was talking about.

"The reason everyone's sticking around, ALpha Liam and Beta Mateo are here! Talking to the orchestra teacher!"

Serenity stopped in her tracks, "what why?"

Des shrugs, "apparently the orchestra that they had planned to get fell through, and now the high school and middle school orchestras are playing at the ball."

"Oh," was all she had to say.

"Yeah, but my mom texted me during class. We're getting my dress at 5:30!" Des waved her phone in front of Serenity's face.

"So you're going into town?" they continued walking.

"No, she's coming to the packhouse."

"A human? At the packhouse?" Humans were rarely ever allowed on their grounds. Just way too many questions were asked.

"I actually do not know," she shrugs.

"You don't know?" this was shocking because she always knew everything.

"I know feels strange not knowing. My brother didn't mention it though. He's been fairly busy. "

Sernity nods her head. She could tell.

The girls grabbed their stuff from their lockers then proceeded to go out to their bikes. The trip home was smooth and easy. The weather outside was still quite cool, but the sun was out.

Once they put their bikes in the barn, they went their separate ways. Des went home and Serenity went up to her room.

In the safety of her room, she began to look for the picture. It had to be here somewhere. She took everything out of her trunk. She didn't have many belongings, but what she did have was either in the trunk or in her wardrobe. By the time she was done looking for the picture, her room is absolutely trashed.

It wasn't here anymore. Where could it have gone?

Serenity knew who she had to talk to about everything, but she needed a clear calm level head before she went to him. Cleaning her room allowed her to do just that. As she did so she thought about what she would ask. How would she bring it up?

By the time she was done cleaning up her room she still couldn't answer the question. Before she knew it she was standing outside his office door without a single clue as to where to start with the whole ordeal.

Taking a deep breath she balled her hand into a fist and knocked.

"Come in."

She pushed open the door.

Liam stood on a circular platform with a lady circling him with a measuring tape. His back is to her and he looks down at the suit he's wearing.

"Did you need something?" He already knew who it was. Her scent gave it all away.

"I-I-uh erm. No, it can wait. I see you're busy."

He turns his head towards her, "never too busy for you what is it?"

"It's nothing, " she assures him. There were sparks whenever they touched, but butterflies whenever he spoke to her like that.

"If you insist, but perfect timing. Amy here just finished my measurements and will now take yours," he steps off the platform and turns his body to face her.

"My measurements? For what?" Serenity was confused. Why did this Amy girl need her measurements?

"For a dress of course. She agreed to make you one even though it's a bit last minute."

She looked from him to her, "A dress for?" she still didn't quite comprehend what was happening

"The ball of course," he looked at her as if she had grown an extra head.

Amy motioned for her to stand on the platform.

"I'm sure I have the correct attire to waitress the event." She stayed rooted in place. Were they getting special dresses for this specific event? That is a bit much. However, she did have the proper attire to cater at a white tie event.

"Waitress?" Liam asked. Now he was just as confused as her.

"Yes I will be working the event will I not?"

Amy looked between the two rather confused. She hadn't a clue as to what they were talking about. All she knew was that they were paying her twice as much to make a home visit.

"No, of course not."

"Oh," Serenity stepped up on the platform feeling rather stupid, "So measurements for a dress dress? A dress to attend the ball in?"

Liam slowly nods his head, "yes a dress dress. I figure you hadn't had your measurements taken yet."

"Are you sure that correct? I haven't gotten the schedule yet but I just kind of assumed I'd be-" she pauses to look over at him while Amy circles her with the measuring tape, "Working it?"

"Of course not. Why are you still questioning me? I think I'd know what was happening for my own ball."

"So I'll be allowed to attend? As a guest?"

"Yes," he raises his voice getting rather frustrated with her.

"Okay," she put her head down.

She's getting a dress for the ball. That was all Serenity could think. She will be actually attending the ball! As a guest. As a packmate.
