Chapter Two: The Chase
I was weightless.
For one glorious second I felt like I was flying, till gravity decided to be a bitch and wreck everything.
I plummet to earth, but I quickly unhook my 'commando belt'-that sounds so wrong in so many ways- and hook it round a stray washing line. I zip down as the belt and the line strain against my weight. Hey I'm not that heavily! I could easily pass for a size zero.
The other end of the building were the clothing line ended was fast approaching, not to worry, I swing my legs backwards with so much force I thought I heard the line cut. I push myself forward and lunge feet first into the air, coming down hard standing on my feet.
"Take that gravity." I hoist the belt back round my chest, wondered what I'd've done if I had decided not to bring it. I look back at my window, it shut tight close, on a good day I could make the jump if I had enough running space.
Weeeeeeeeeihhhhhyooooooooo weeeeeyoooo....
Sirens continued to filled the night air, I run to the edge of the building to look down, another police car goes by. Thank God, now I have something to follow.
I start running, jumping between buildings, keeping pace with the squad car. I didn't have to run to fast, unless the car made a turn left and I'd have to jump down to smaller building to catch up.
I unhooked my belt twice to zip down more lines so as not to lose the car, people started to notice me when I whooshed down a telephone line across from a popular diner. People pointed and brought out their phones, no time for autograph's folks, I'm kinda busy.
"Whoo!" someone yelled.
Other joined in a clapped, gosh, I feel so loved.
The car took another sharp turn that made me wonder if he was trying to lose me, wouldn't be the first time.
We were nearing the city center, and I noticed people were running in the opposite direction. Oh goody! If I was lucky maybe it was a shootout, or a highly armed mob fight. Last month a massive manhunt for a murderer was underway, the guy saw a horror movie and decided to copy it by amputating his hand and replacing it with a butcher's knife. Kinda like Wolverine but with a tub load of blood.
The car screeches to a stop behind a blockade of others cars before a bank. I jump onto the top of "REARVIEW PLAZA PARK HOTEL", weird name, or maybe I was reading it wrong, seeing as I was standing from the back.
"Let go of the hostages and step away from bank." A male voice echoed through a megaphone.
Bank. Hostages. Megaphone. It was a stick up! Or is it called a hold up? I've gotta stop having Texas Tuesday movie night.
I could just about make out five people kneeling down infront of a very thin figure. The cops where a good hundred feet away, why won't they shoot him?
I had to get a closer look, I jump off the edge of the building, did alittle somersault in the air and landed on the hotel sign. I stood up and noticed I hand landed on PLAZA. Well it was a lot better than if I'd landed on REARVEIW, come to think about it that be cool, would give me a lot of attention. I shook my head, focus girl, focus.
The figure was walking around behind the five kneeling figures, something big and square was strapped onto their chest. Like baby carriers dads wear. The figure looked to be a man. He was waving something around that made all the cops back up an extra 10 feet.
Bomb, that's all it could be. I reach into a pocket of my belt right around the back of my waist. I felt the hilt of my knife. It excited me, but I wasn't a fool, I wasn't gonna be the first one to draw blood, well...that's not to say that I'd be the last.
"Hey!" I screamed from my position, I really wished I was standing above the 'rearview' sign right about now. "Wassap?" I crack a saucy grin and jump from the sign, land on top of a car crouser, rolled and came up standing in the large space left between the bank and the cars.
"What's she doing here?"
"I thought we ditched her."
"I love her outfit!"
Police officers are such gossips, I thought. "I knew you were trying to ditch me!" I point at the officers coming out of the car I chased, they both had straight faces with the set of their eyes grim. "Anyway," I turn away from them, walk over to the female officer holding the blowhorn.
Sally Johnson, a no nonsense officer, either in her late twenties or very-early thirties. I loved her cause she's the only female cop I knew who'd risen very high in the ranks and also was one of the only few cops who tolerated me. She accepts my help and promised not to send me to jail if I promised to fight crime her way, at the end of the day we both get what we want, I get to fight and her town is safe, win-win.
"Hey Sal," I said.
"Hey Gloe" she replies.
Urgh! I hate that, and don't for a second think she says 'Glow', she says it like you'd pronounce 'Cloe' sort of a weird 'G-lo-ie', urk!
"No," I simply say. "What up?" I tilt my head in the direction of the bank entrance, I got a good view of the person standing infront of the bank waving what looks to be a detonator.
Even though my face was a pure mask of calm my heart was beating a thousand miles an hour, the five hostages looked to be bankers with bombs strapped to their chest and the figure behind them was waving the detonator around.
Sally confirmed my suspicions (yeah, I just that good).
"This is kinda your area of expertise," Sally smirked. "You're the one we give the weirdo's to."
"And I thank you for that," I flashed her a megawatt smile, one would think we'd met at the mall and were complimenting each other's shoes, instead of being out on a cold Friday night making small talk during a hostage situation.
I calmly look back at the scene, and willed my body to calm down. I couldn't risk a fight outbreak. Even if every cell in my body wanted to. Breathe...my muscles went slack, my limbs stopped vibrating, and my brain went into full tactic mode.
The person holding the detonator was a male (big surprise), look to be 22-24, no more older than me. He had a full head of golden hair, if it were possible for hair to looked faded then this guy accomplished it, he was really thin, extremely frail looking and his movements were jerky. Even from a distance you could see that this guy reeked of desperation.
"Anything else you need to fill me in on?" I asked Sally as I took a tentative step forward.
Before she could reply another female officer stepped forward hold her gun aimed at the bank. The one who'd been in the car that tried to lose me.
"Sir, you're not really going to let this inexperienced civilian walk into a live hostage situation are you?" she said from behind her raised gun, at the angle she was standing coupled with the poor way she was holding her gun with both hands she was actually even pointing it towards me!?
"Tell me lieutenant," Sally said without even sparing the lieutenant a glance, "Between the two of you who has more experience dealing with all the freaky stuff going on in this town?"
"Wha-?" the lieutenant stuttered, clearly not expecting the reply she'd gotten.
"Now get back to your post and do not advance until I give the word." Sally ordered.
"Bu-but, what post?"
Sally sighed, looked at the lieutenant, "Find one."
"Yeah!" I said triumphantly, I lift my finger up and point her gun barrel anywhere but at my chest. "And while you're at it learn how to hold a gun."
The lieutenant stalks off without another word, gun still held awkwardly.
"Well, times a wasting." And I walk into the dead zone.
"Oh and Gloe?" I flinch.
"What?" I said through grit teeth.
She grins, "He keeps mumbling something like, diamonds?"
I turned and continued walking, "Oh great," I mumble under my breath, "A Jewel thief robbing a bank, this should be fun."
