*46* Heroes
P'Zee called Phuwin, Dunk, Kaownah, Cooper and Fluke right after breakfast. Colleagues wondered aloud what it could be about. They were dressed in uniforms typical of students of the Academy of the Knights of Light, this time navy blue, with their nicknames, names, surnames and magical rank, depending on whether they were fully magical, hybrids or came from completely non-magical, in which only they, thanks to gifts from angels and archangels, became the chosen ones embroidered with gold threads near the heart.
“Maybe they will announce the day of the rune ceremony?” Kaownah wondered aloud. “Because we have already passed all the exams and endurance tests, I expect that they will set a date any day now.”
“But then wouldn't they have announced it at the morning meeting? Besides, they would have summoned all of us because we all passed the exams”. Cooper had serious doubts, and Phuwin shared his opinion.
“I don't know, maybe there is some new mission we should take part in? Or this is an additional test to check if we are really ready?” Fluke suggested his thought, walking at the front of this small procession.
“That would explain why P'Zee didn't call Gemini and Fourth, they don't have enough experience, or at least that's what I think, but I don't know, something doesn't feel right”. Dunk wrinkled his nose as if it had reached him some bad smell. A moment later, the others grimaced as well.
“Yuck! What's that smell?” Kaownah plugged his nose with his fingers, trying not to inhale the disgusting fumes that seemed to be coming from behind Dr. Jimmy's office door.
“It... It smells like burning human corpses,” Dunk replied after a short moment of thought. The young men exchanged horrified glances and Cooper grabbed the door handle to open the door, but even though he pressed on it with all the strength he had, the door remained closed.
“Step aside”. He asked the others and positioned himself at a slight angle to force the door open with his shoulder. Before anyone could protest, Cooper pushed against the door and it swung open with a loud bang as it hit something behind it. The boys looked inside and saw clouds of gray smoke surrounding one of the beds, with Dr. Jimmy standing next to it. Just outside the door, someone had placed a not very tall cabinet with a glass door, which broke when Cooper literally broke the front door off its hinges.
“HELP!”Dr. Jimmy only managed to scream before he was knocked to the floor by some unseen force. The boys didn't talk to each other about it, they didn't establish any action plan, there was no time for it. Cooper, being the strongest of them, decided to stay and fight what attacked the doctor. Phuwin just shouted to the others: "I'm coming!" and ran out.
In the corridor he came across Gemini and Fourth, who were just returning from breakfast. Gem and Fourth had classes scheduled later with Mixxiw and Off Jumpol.
“G, Fourth, help! Someone attacked Dr. Jimmy!” Phuwin blurted out in one breath.
“WHAT?!” GemFourth asked in unison.
“Dr. Jimmy was attacked. I'm running for P'Zee” Phu said a little slower, but not calmer at all.
“We're going to the doctor”. Gemini decided and together with Fourth they started running towards the doctor's office. The bad luck was that Dr. Jimmy's office and P'Zee's office were on completely opposite sides of the same 250-meter-long corridor. When they were very close, they heard the crack of cracking wood, as if someone had hit a wooden board against something very hard. You could also hear someone's desperate scream for help and another, slightly quieter one, calling for his mother.
When they got there, they found real chaos there.
The white furniture that had previously stood against the walls in the doctor's office was completely destroyed, fragments of glass were strewn across the floor, and various substances and colorful pills of various sizes were visible. Dr. Jimmy was lying unconscious next to a still smoking bed, on which they saw a dead body.
“Don't breathe it!” Gemini ordered Fourth and took out two masks from the drawer of the cabinet blocking their way. He gave one to his boyfriend and put the other on his face. He took two stelae from his pocket, his and Fourth's, and gave them back to their owner. “Water rune, quick!”
Fourth complied, drawing a rune on the palm of his left hand that allowed them to summon a rain cloud that appeared out of nowhere directly above their heads. Fourth moved his hand towards the still burning bed, snapped his fingers and rain fell, extinguishing the flames with a loud hiss.
Gemini knew there was a threat somewhere nearby. While Fourth was putting out a small fire, Gem drew a protective rune on his back that made the boy invisible to anyone who would knowingly harm him. Then he looked around and saw in the corner, behind one of the beds, standing a tall, well-built man with huge black wings covered with soot growing from his back. His eyes resembled those of a snake, the pupils were arranged in narrow slits. The right cheek was cut, but instead of blood, light green thick goo flowed from the wound. The monster smelled as if its body had just been on fire.
The monster sensed the presence of the intruder when it was too late. With a quick, skillful, dancing movement of the hand in which he held the stele, Gemini drew a cage symbol on the floor, above which he wrote only two letters Ag, which in the periodic table of elements stood for silver. He didn't wait long, and a shining silver cage formed around the strange creature, which only partially resembled a human, from which the monster could no longer escape.
Gemini, however, knew this was not the end. He made sure that the cage was properly secured and only then could he look around more calmly.
The damage was enormous, but he was sure it wasn't the worst that could have happened to them. Fourth was trying to revive the still unconscious Dr. Jimmy. Ciize was placing a piece of bandage on her forehead where she was injured. Cooper lay on the floor groaning in pain and holding his leg. Kaownah vomited into a non-medical waste bin. Dunk staggered towards him. His face was sooty, his eye was black, and his cheek was swollen. He patted his younger brother on the shoulder and said something that was probably supposed to be, "Good job, little brother, I'm proud of you," but it sounded completely different, probably because of the injuries the older brother had suffered.
By the time P'Zee, Phuwin, Pond, Gun Atthaphan, and Max arrived, the situation was under control. Gemini and Fourth bravely tended to the wounded, washing their wounds and bandaging them. P'Zee was full of admiration for the courage, bravery and ingenuity of his subordinates.
“Gemini and Fourth saved our lives, and maybe even our souls”. Dr. Jimmy informed his boss, lying on the couch with his left leg bandaged.
“It's true, we were attacked unexpectedly”. Ciize confirmed, taking off her blood-stained gloves and throwing them into a special bin marked: "Toxic medical waste". “The first to arrive were Cooper, Kaownah, Fluke, Phuwin and Dunk, but when Phuwin ran to notify the boss, Forbiden Name sensed that he was starting to lose his advantage. We heard that P'Zee is the only person he is afraid of. He knocked the doctor to the floor, the doctor lost consciousness, he broke Cooper's leg, he attacked Fluke with a dementor spell, forcing him to remember of his worst memories. He cast an Imperius Curse on Kaownah, forcing him to hit Dunk in the back with a chair. Kaownah has a very strong mind and tried to defend himself from it, ending up smashing the chair into the doctor's desk. Just when I was starting to lose hope for it that we would get out of this alive, Fourth and Gemini showed up. If it weren't for them and their cool approach to the whole situation, we might all be dead or at least soulless.”
“Forbidden Name? How did he get here?” P'Zee became interested. “Have our defenses failed?”
“I'm afraid so, boss,” Jimmy admitted sadly and hung his head. He felt responsible for what happened here. “And I'm afraid I was the one who let him in.”
“You, doctor? How so?”
“The body of one of our Knights was brought to me for examination. I thought he was hit by a curse. As I began to examine it, the corpse suddenly burst into flames, and a silver, shiny substance began flowing from its eyes and mouth, slowly rising into the air and a few seconds later forming into a strange entity that initially resembled nothing I had ever known. Only after two or three minutes did the entity assume the body of a human being. He spoke to me. He introduced himself and said that I definitely knew him by another name, that I knew him as Forbidden Name. Then I got scared. I wanted to send Ciize to call for help, but he blocked our way. He used a spell to cut off all electronic devices. We were trapped. Cooper kicked down the door. And you already know the rest. Gemini kept his cool and a cool head in the face of danger. If it weren't for him and his wise orders, we wouldn't be talking now. I think we have found our ruler. It's him, P'Zee. You must present him to the Council of Two Hundred.”
“Uh, I'll do that, but where's Forbidden Name?”
“There, in the corner, in the silver cage, Gemini neutralized him, but didn't kill him. I think it will be possible to extract some quite interesting testimony from him. Gemini is a smart boy, he knew that silver neutralizes evil witches and monsters. A very smart boy, he will make an excellent leader!”
Dr. Jimmy gushed over Norawit's talent. He was extremely impressed.
P'Zee approached a cage made of pure silver, shimmering with bright lights. A man with a body marked by many scars, with gray hair was sitting on the floor, leaning his dripping back with huge, black, slightly jagged wings growing out of it against the wall and looked at him with an unconscious gaze, never blinking with his completely white eyes, devoid of irises and pupils. Zee knew who Forbidden Name used to be: Neo Trai Nimtawat, also known as Boston, formerly a young and very talented and promising Knight of Light who, tempted by the Powers of Darkness, betrayed the Institute and had been acting on his own for years, plotting against P'Zee. It was no secret that Nimtawat wanted to take over their Magic World. When he joined the Institute, he was a truly handsome young boy, but a piece of darkness was already lurking in his soul, ready to take over his pure heart. Soon he wanted fame and power, he wanted to become immortal. He knew nothing about love or the power of that feeling. If he had known this, he probably would never have gone astray.
Neo achieved what he wanted to do, became somewhat immortal, but at a huge cost.
P'Zee looked at him with disgust, like dog shit stuck to his shoe.
“This is what those who choose the wrong side end up doing,” Atthaphan said philosophically, standing next to Zee. “Let's send him to our interrogation specialists, I think we will have his full testimony by eight o'clock at the latest.”
“Good idea. Boys, take him underground.” P'Zee snapped his finger, and then Off and Max, escorted by Phuwin and Pond, took out the cage and carried it to the elevator, which took them all the way down to the rooms where they were already waiting for them.
P'Zee decided to question each of them individually. He wanted to find out the truth. He started with Dr. Jimmy, whom he was still talking to in his office, and invited the others to his office, at least those who could walk. Gemini and Fourth waited a long time for their turn, but they were not bored. Mix brought them a phoenix that belonged to Fourth and a lion cub that belonged to Gemini. Their plan to work with these animals was thwarted, but Mix found a way to make sure the waiting hours weren't completely wasted. He taught boys how to control their animals and give them commands.
When P'Zee finally invited them both inside, Mix took the phoenix and the lion cub to the gardens where they had their own homes.
The news spread quickly.
Five hours later, when Gem and Fourth were finally released from P'Zee's office and returned to their room, they were surprised to find it covered with gifts from admirers. There were piles of stuffed animals of various shapes, colors and sizes on the bed, several vases with bouquets of flowers on the desk, and on the floor next to the wardrobe with clothes there were several colorful gift bags filled with chips and sweets.
“What's that?” Fourth picked up one of the bouquets to check if the roses smelled (they smelled wonderful). Among the flowers he found a small pink note, the contents of which he read aloud. – “Thank you for freeing us from FN, for years we lived in fear that one day he would attack us, and you dealt with him at the first meeting. Thank you!".
There was no signature, so they didn't know who the bouquet and the short note were from.
Gem picked up a mascot from the bed that looked like a miniature Fourth Nattawat and even had facial moles in the same places as its live counterpart.
“Oh, now, when you're not around and I miss you, all I have to do is look at this mascot and I'll feel like you're right next to me”. Gemini said, smiling charmingly.
“Oh, my hopeless romantic”. Fourth laughed, thoroughly amused by his boyfriend's behavior. Sometimes he had the impression that in front of him was not an adult man, but a five-year-old who loved to play and fool around, who had not yet learned the cruelty of people and beings like them, a little boy whose only goal was to have fun. But today he proved once again that he is already an adult, a mature man with courage and bravery that others could only envy. Looking at him, Fourth only now noticed the change that was slowly but surely taking place in him: The Gem he met was a sweet, charming nerd who liked to fool around and joke around. The Gemini who stood in front of him was handsome and sexy with a much more rugged beauty and less sharp facial features. His mouth became larger, his gaze more serious, and his once small body was now distinguished by defined muscles and vein lines that had previously been almost invisible.
And even though Gem could still joke about everything, still loved to make stupid faces that made Fourth laugh, Fourth realized that somewhere along the way they had said goodbye forever to this innocent, sweet romantic whose only dream was to meet his beloved at least once, a mysterious stranger who was willing to give his loved one to someone else if he believed that his loved one would be happy with that person.
Fourth, feeling a surge of emotion, walked up to Gemini and embraced him from behind, hugging his back and pressing his chin into the crook of his boyfriend's neck. He joined his hands together at Norawit's navel.
“Fourth? What's up with you?”
“Nothing, I'm just glad you found me. Thank you for not giving up. Thanks to this, we can be together today and I am so damn happy.”
Gem tilted his head to get a better look at his boyfriend and saw that his eyes were welling with tears and his mouth was puckering in anticipation of tears coming.
“Fourth, darling, please don't cry, or I will cry too”. He asked him gently and turned around in his arms without getting out of his embrace. Now he was looking straight into his eyes. Those beautiful, wonderful, dark eyes that he loved so much. He leaned down slightly and kissed the freckle on his nose. “Don't cry, okay? It's over now. We are safe.”
“I'm not crying because I don't feel safe. I cry because I'm happy. You don't even know how happy I am! You are my home that I never had, you are my everything, Gem. My home, do you understand?”
No sooner had Fourth got the words out than he burst into tears, and Gem was no better. After a while, they hugged each other, letting tears of emotion and happiness soak their uniforms. Because home is not always four walls and a roof, sometimes it is a person who makes any suffering easier to bear, a person who opens his arms to us when we feel hurt.
“We're two idiots standing in the middle of the room blubbering like little kids, you know?” Fourth stated, moving away from him and wiping first his own tears and then those from Gemini's face.
“I know, if Phu or Dunk saw this, they would not leave me alone for the rest of my life”. Gem laughed. “Come on, let's see what else interesting we got.”
Gemini extended his hand towards Fourth, and Natawat placed his on it, and together they walked over to the snack-filled bags.
