Chapter Twenty-Three
"Oh no," Maddie stopped in her tracks right before the entry to the Slytherin common room. "I'm such an idiot. Password. I haven't got a clue."
Hugo and Lily looked at each other. "We do," Lily made her way down the remaining steps. "It's the same as it was when my dad and Uncle Ron snuck into the common room. That's was, like, 30 years ago." Hugo went up to the entry, "Pureblood."
The passage slid open, revealing the green-ish room.
"Well, thanks." Maddie lead the trio into the common room. "I'm guessing girls first years might be the first on the left?"
Lily considered, "Maybe. Try it." They made their way to the door. Hugo held a finger to his lips as he spun the door knob.
He peered in, and waved them on. Maddie instantly spotted her sister. She was nestled in a cocoon of covers, sleeping. Maddie sighed with relief. This should be easy.
She, Lily, and Hugo crossed the room to Lena's bed. The purse was dangling from its strap, which was carelessly slung over the post closest to her. Maddie snatched the bag.
But on her way down, her elbow caught a glass of water sitting on the table next to Maddie's bed. She gasped. The water spilt all over Lena.
Maddie grabbed Hugo and Lily's hands and dove behind the edge of the bed.
Lena woke with a start. "What the--?" She moaned and left the room to dry herself off.
The three let out a relieved breath. Maddie still had the bag.
"Let's get out of here, clumsy." Hugo whispered to Maddie.
They crept past the other beds and out the door. They spotted Lena, wiping her face with a towel.
"Go!" Hugo mouthed, the second she turned her back to the exit. The three made a mad dash for the door.
But not quick enough.
"Maddie?!" Lena shouted at her sister's back. They didn't stop. "Hey! That's my bag!" She used her athletic ability and ran after them. Maddie frowned. Lena was faster by far.
They made their way out of the common room, up the stairs, all with Lena hot on their tales. Just as they rounded the corner...
Filch!
No! This guy's everywhere!
"Well, well. What's 'ave we gots here, hm?" He snickered. "Students out of bed, am I right? I am."
The four looked at each other. "Well, it's out of my hands now, you'll be dealing with Headmistress."
---
"I am shocked!" Professor McGonigle shook her head. "Never did I expect the Chan twins to be breaking rules. Nor you, Weasley." She paused. "Miss Potter... kids look to the behavior of you and your brothers because of your father. This is not what they should see."
The four fixed their stares at the floor.
"Punishment...?" Filch edged her on. "Yes," she thought for a second. "Fifty points from Slytherin. Also, sixty from Gryffindor." Lena's face raged, "What? That isn't fair! There's triple the amount of kids, shouldn't there be triple the punishment?!" The Headmistress glared at Lena. "Alright then, 150 points from Slytherin!" Lena rolled her eyes.
"And..." She continued, "You'll all serve detention with Hagrid in the Forest tomorrow eve. That'll be all. Try to get some sleep, now that you've wasted your night out of bed."
The kids left the office.
Once Lena had stormed down the eagle stairs, and was out of ear shot. Maddie pulled aside her black hoodie to reveal a purse. "I still got it!"
"But you really can't tell us why? Maddie, we're doing detention for something we don't even know about."
Lily pleaded.
Maddie sighed, "I want to tell you so badly. And... and I will, I promise. Just, I can't tell you now. I'm really sorry." Lily looked a bit hurt. "Um, okay." Hugo shrugged, "She'll let us know, okay?" Lily nodded. "I guess... okay."
Maddie hugged Lily. "Thank you for understanding. It will all make sense soon." I hope.
