Chapter Six

Maddie sat at the very end (as far away from teachers as possible) of Gryffindor table. All alone, she was quite fine nibbling at her toast and lightly sipping her pumpkin juice. Quite fine.

Then, a deep voice startled her from across the table. The voice sounded slightly familiar as it asked, "You wouldn't mind if my cousin and I sit here, would you?"

Maddie fixed her gaze upward. The boy she had seen on the Hogwarts Express-- accompanied by his female cousin-- stood before her. At closer look, his shaggy hair appeared much redder.

Was it okay to say she minded? No. "No," she answered bleakly. The two cousins took their seats. "Hi, I'm Lily Potter," the girl stuck out her hand. Potter? "Is your dad...?" Maddie asked as shook her hand, completely forgetting her quest for invisibility for a moment. The girl's cheeks turned the same color as her hair, "Well, yeah. And, uh, this is my cousin, Hugo Weasley." He shook Maddie's hand. Remembering this was not invisible, Maddie ducked her head and sipped her pumpkin juice in silence. "And you are...?" Hugo chuckled.

"Oh," Maddie forced a laugh, "Maddie Chan." Hugo furrowed his brow, "Chans... Chans... 100% pure, Slytherin since the start, but never followed you-know-who." Maddie's stomach churned. How did this boy know so much about her?

Before Maddie could ask, Lily slapped his cousin. "Don't scare her!" Hugo ducked his head and stared at his breakfast, an obvious smirk on his face. "How did you know that, Hugo?" Maddie inquired. "I've read all the books of magical records. I can't remember them all, but Chan seemed pretty simple. No record of Azkaban, I don't believe." Maddie shrugged, "I... I wouldn't know."

Lily nodes uncomfortably, clearly wanting to change the subject. "So, Maddie, don't you have a twin? I mean, I thought I saw her walk in with you." Lily took some more eggs and plopped them down on her plate. "Yes," Maddie said quickly, "Lena." Hugo nodded, "So where is she? I saw her on the train. Quite beautiful, actually." Lily slapped him again. "Oh, she's... in Slytherin." Where I should be. Hugo and Lily nod in unison, "Kinda like Sirius Black, you are." Hugo thinks aloud. "What?" Maddie thinks she must have heard the boy wrong. "Well, the rest of the Blacks were sorted into Slytherin, but then came one... one special wizard that got Gryffindor. Kinda like you." Maddie mulled it over, "I guess...?" Lily checked her watch, "Oh, we've got ten minutes until class. It's flying class, and  since we don't know how to get there, I suggest we start looking now," she said as if they and Lily were friends. "Oh, yeah, I just have to talk to Lena for a second, I'll be right back." Maddie stood up. "We'll wait for you." She heard Hugo say.

"Maddie, can I fly on a broom?" She whispered to her standing at her side. Lena turned to her, "Who are you talking with?" Maddie shrugged, "Hugo Weasley and Lily Potter." Lena rolled her eyes, "The correct answer is nobody!" After a brief silence, Lena speaks again, "You should. The little magic inside you should allow it." Maddie nods, "I wish we had classes with Slytherin first, but we've got it with Ravenclaw." Lena's turn to nod. "Well... have fun." She turns away from Lena and starts chatting up a storm with a Slytherin first year. Maddie just turns on her heal and walks away. Right towards her new friends.
