Chapter Eleven

Lena's eyes nearly fell from their sockets as she heard the news. "What?!" She exclaimed after Maddie had finished.

"You heard me," Maddie replied coldly. "I trust Madame Pomfrey with my secret more than you, right now."

The twins were still technically fighting. They hadn't really spoken since that day in the hallway after class. In fact, the girls completely ignored each other for the most part. They hadn't done any spells yet, so there was no need to interact. But Maddie knew that soon they'd have to, they've already been reading about the spells for over a week, and she needed Lena for that.

On top of it all, Lena wrote almost everyday to their parents, mentioning Maddie's behavior towards her and leaving out the parts when she wasn't all to kind to Maddie (Mr. and Mrs. Chan mailed back the tie, but hadn't wrote to Maddie).

"Maddie, tell me the truth, does anybody, anyone at all, else know about... well, you know?" Lena pinches the bridge of her nose in frustration. Please, say no, was all she could think.

Maddie was about to shake her head, then she thought of something. "No body else, but something else knows." Lena let out an exasperated sigh, "Explain."

The fact that Lena was attempting to act like a stressed-out parent or something ticked Maddie off. Lena was no more mature than Maddie. Lena had ignored her, while Maddie had stayed calm and mature, or at least she told herself that.

And I'm 20 seconds older. Ha! Take that Lena.

"The sorting hat," Maddie continues, "somehow knew."

The sisters stood in silence for a few seconds. Just then, Roxanne Smith (a Hufflepuff 1st year) walked into the section of the library where the girls had been whispering. Unnoticed.

"Some days," Maddie admits, "I feel like it's written across my forehand. Like the whole world knows I'm a squib."

Roxanne drops the book she was examining the cover of and gasps. Both girls instantly whip around, facing Roxanne. Maddie starts shaking her head feverishly, "No, no, no, I was lying!" "Joking," Lena interjects.

Roxane just stares at Maddie with her jaw dangling, neon colored braces lighting up her mouth. "I can do magic!" Maddie insists, taking out her useless wand, "But I don't know any spells..." she says slowly, and truthfully. Roxanne closes her mouth, blinks a few startled blinks, and clears her throat, "Maddie, right?" Surprised by Roxanne's sudden confidence, Maddie nods. "Prove to me your a witch, when we learn a spell. Otherwise, I'll tell Professor McGonigle that you're a squib." Roxanne looked around nervously, and made her way from the library.

Both girls just stood there in shock. What just happened?
