Chapter 1

For such a long time it has been a hard time for me and my daughter Elena, before it all we had the perfect life. We lived in a big house with just the three of us living the life every single parent would die for. We had the money and we had our loving family. It was perfect, until I failed it all by one mistake. It should have me instead of them. I could still feel her lifeless body wrapped around my arms as she bled out right in front of my eyes. My beautiful wife. Since that day my soul had been empty. I couldn't escape the life I had been living and it was all my fault. It was only me and my daughter since then. For sixteen years they had been chasing us. I moved from place to place hiding amongst strangers in hopes they wouldn't find me again. All those years of running made our life not easier then it was. Elena needed her mother and I needed my wife. We were nothing without her. My sweet principessa was devastated when she found out her mother passed away. I still hear her cries for her mother like it was yesterday. For sixteen years I had to lie to my daughter telling her that we were robbed and that I had to move away all the time because of my new job. Some bits were true, some weren't. But I couldn't risk loosing her also. She was everything I had and by loosing her there wouldn't be a single piece of my soul left. I had to do what every father would have done to protect their daughter.

You could hear his raised voice from down the halls of the large building, his deep and demanding voice. He sounded exactly the same like his father. He also has the same temper as him. Everyone knew that he would be just as great of a boss like his father Leonardo Donatelli. I was close to his office and a single drop of sweat fell down from my forehead onto my leather boots. I was nervous to ask him a favor like this. Sixteen years passed since I had last stepped a foot into this building. My eyes fell on the tall guard next to the door of the bosses office. I bowed my head a bit as a greeting and explained why I was here for the boss. The guard knocked on the door letting him know that there was someone for him. He yelled something in Italian and then the guard opened the door for me. With a deep sigh I walked in and repeated the words I would say to him in my head over and over again. The breeze of the closing door behind me made me shiver in a nerve wracking way. I had every right to be this nervous after what I had done.

In front of me he sat in his tall black chair, he was wearing a white overall and in his left hand he had a pen rolling through his fingers. "What do you want Russo?" Alessio Donatelli asked me with a raised eyebrow. Last time I had seen him he was just a little boy lingering around his father all day. He had grown a lot since that day. I stepped a bit forward towards him and closed my eyes for a second, "I need protection sir"

"I can't help you with that" he immediately said as he stood up from his chair trying to call his guard.

"No please sir I need it, for me and my daughter. You know what happened" I would do anything for my sweet Elena. I would beg, go on my knees for her. I needed him to help me because he was my last hope.

Alessio sighed deeply, "my father made a decision that day, I have no right to say anything about that. You know that Russo, my fathers words are the words that count. Not mine" he refused. I begged for help before when Leonardo was still the boss, I begged him to forgive me for what I had done. I begged him to stop this nonsense and let me make it up to him. Only he refused to help me out after everything. When Leonardo gave his title to his son I knew I had to ask his son for help. I didn't had an other choice. "Please sir, you know I have a daughter who needs protection. I would do anything to give her the life she deserves. It's all for her, please I beg you"

There was a sign in his eyes that he was rethinking about it. Alessio wasn't fully like his father, he had a heart. Alessio loudly opened a drawer and took out a piece of paper. A contract to be exact. He corrected some things on the paper and then laid it in front of me. With doubt I picked it up and read it.

———
Me, Alessio Donatelli, will make sure that my men won't be in any harm towards you or your daughter anymore so that the both of you will be safe from any danger. There is one consequence and that is that you will hand your daughter over to me the day she turns twenty. From that day she will be mine and you are assigned to hand her over to me, if not I will reverse this contract and my men will make your life a living hell.

"What? You can't take my daughter away from me" I shockingly said to him, "this isn't fair"

Alessio leaned forward over the desk, "you think this is fair for me? I have to risk everything so that you will be safe? It was your mistake Russo, not mine. This is all I can help you with" he stood straight again wrapping his arms around waiting for me to answer him. I didn't want to loose my daughter, she was all I had but at least she would be protected by Italy's greatest Mafia boss. She would be in good hands. Better then in mine. "Am I allowed to see her after this?"

"Deal or no deal Russo" he said straight to the point.

With shaking hands I picked up the paper and signed it, my hands were sweaty and I was hoping not to regret this decision. I have signed my daughter away to a man just because of one mistake in the past. I swallowed by the looks of the contract. The second I signed it, Alessio picked it up and shoved it back into one of his drawers. "Now you have signed the papers I want to set some strict rules with you Russo. First of all you have no rights to tell anyone about this. If you do and this will get into my fathers hands you're dead. Understand!"

"I understand"

"Second thing I wanted to say is that my men won't cause any harm anymore the minute you walk out of this building. Don't ruin this, if you break the contract and your daughter won't be home the day she turns twenty I will personally come for you" Alessio was clear with his rules. I didn't know how to feel since it was double sided. I was glad that Elena was safe but by her being safe meant that I wasn't going to see her anymore. I have just a few years until she will be gone. My sweet angel.

"Now that this is gone, you're allowed to leave. See you in four years mio amico"
