1.) What author was your biggest inspiration as a kid? What about now?
Adam Gidwitz was the first author who's writing I actually appreciated. I even wrote a fake letter to him for a writing contest, talking about how much he inspired me. "Now", I would say that I still like to refer back to his writing since it was the first thing that really helped me get to where I am now. Then vs. now, now I don't tend to pick out certain inspirational authors. I consider them all an inspiration, just from the fact that they were able to stay committed enough to complete a book.
2.) Where does your writing inspiration come from?
It may be a cliche notion, but a lot of my inspiration comes from dreams I have. I will dream of an interesting storyline, then need to develop characters to experience those events. Otherwise, it just a general thinking of "what kind of book do I want to read?" Usually, that will lead me to a new story to work on. The problem is staying dedicated to that story. (*Nervous laugh*)
3.) What is your earliest writing related memory?
I honestly can't remember too far back. I have horrible memory in general, so trying to answer this kind of question hurts my poor brain. I remember quite clearly in 6th grade doing a kind of "blog." My wonderfully unique teacher had separated the classroom walls into sections with ductape, and every student could design their space how they wanted. Each week we had to put up something new, and I would "update" my story that I was writing. I eventually started posting it on missliterati.com, but then freaked out that someone would steal my work. (XD) I know I wrote before then, and I do remember some things, (like a horrible horrible story in 4th grade that shall never be mentioned,) but no need to talk about those things. :)
4.) How would you describe your writing style?
When I'm writing, I tend to overuse my description. The characters won't say a single word for pages at a time. It also gets a little obnoxious when I'm explaining something and describe literally anything and everything about that thing, whether it pertains to the story or not. Have mercy on my characters' lack of communication!
5.) What's your favorite piece of work by you and why?
This is such a difficult answer, just because I have more writing "pieces" (if that's what you want to call them,) than I do on Wattpad. Far too many for me to count, nevertheless decide which is my favorite. I haven't really "completed" many stories, so I don't know if that would really be considered an actual piece of work. On Wattpad, the stories that I am very much into writing right now is "The Prospect of the Night," "Depraved Solitude," and "Overlooking the Deep." Although two of them are fanfictions, it's so much fun to write new scenes and reactions with characters that I am familiar with, as well as anyone else in the fandom. I know I didn't really answer the question, but I don't really have a good response.
6.) What type of writing do you prefer? (i.e. short stories, novels, poetry, etc.) Which genre is your favorite to write in?
When I am the reader, I prefer full novels rather than short stories or poetry. That way I have time to get attached to the characters and there is a chance for the plot to reach a climax. With poetry too, it's all about representing inner feelings and having a passion about a particular topic. It is usually pretty difficult for me to read someone else's poetry, just because there's always an underlying message that you really need to think about. I like writing poetry more than reading it, just because I get what I'm trying to say. Overall though, I honestly don't know which genre is my favorite. I like creating characters within a fantastical setting, but it usually is based off of cliche themes. (Aw snap more vampires, more werewolves, more magical powers the MC didn't know about for some reason lol).
7.) How do you take constructive criticism? Are you sensitive to it, or do you generally just use it to learn from?
I am that hypocrite that is constantly asking for it when someone reads my story, but honestly is sensitive to it, good or bad. If it is really harsh yes, I'm a little hurt. Usually I try not to show people my work in the first place. When I do, I get incredibly self-conscious and often drift away from writing it. (I know, weird. I'm not like other people.) Anything that I am told to improve on, I usually do change my writing to appease the criticism, but I noticed that depending on the person, I will sometimes shoo them off and leave it the way it is. I only do that though if the person comes off as stuck-up and is demanding rather than suggesting I change literally everything I wrote. Even then, if something is spelled wrong or sounds weird, let me know. I won't take that as personally as "your character sucks your plot sucks your writing sucks."
8.) How old were you when you wrote your first novel, short story, etc.? How many have you written since then?
Hm, like question number 3 I have a hard time recalling the exact age. 4th grade I wrote a short story that I was really proud of, but later realized was horrible. Just the other day I found a huge folder on my computer full of old stories that I had actually completed. (Well maybe only a couple were finished.) I don't know when I had written them, but they actually were pretty interesting. Although they were interesting, they definitely were cringe worthy. One story had the main character's name as "Zach." Sometimes I would spell it like so, but other times I would type "Zack." Every single "your" and "there" was incorrect, and I didn't have quotation marks around any dialogue. Terrible terrible, but it was a story I had written. Please don't ask me how many stories I've begun though. I can't stay committed to one story for very long and there are far too many to count.
9.) Do you make your own covers?
On this account, I have not created any of my covers except "Depraved Solitude", (which I drew) and my Music Stories. All of the others are pictures that I found online and put words over, except for "The Prospect of the Night." The fabulous leftie-has-hope created that for me and I'm so happy to use it. Thank you again!!
I am also a team member on contest_fun and I did create all the covers there, (including the profile picture.) We'll probably be coming out with more books containing other genre's of contests soon enough, so take a look at that.
10.) How do you stay motivated to write, and how do you get yourself out of writer's block?
HAHAHAHAHAA! Funny. Very funny.
My motivation and inspiration come in spurts at different times. It's quite irritating actually, but that's me. My motivation for writing comes from having lots of time, (and by that I mean several hours. I can't write in short amounts of time.) My inspiration needs to be in existence before I write. Sometimes I'll listen to epic lyricless music to help me. That goes for writer's block too, but with writer's block I sometimes just need to walk away from my story. (Or start over again with a different story, but I've been trying really hard to stay with the same stories.)
11.) Briefly, describe your favorite characters that you've created and their role in your story/stories. What makes them your favorite?
Shoot, you're going to make me choose?? Gahhhhhhh..... Well, he hasn't been properly introduced yet, but there is a character in "The Prospect of the Night," who is adorable. Although he isn't fully developed (pshh as a character), I still really like his general personality. Names shall not be revealed >:)
12.) Do your stories consist of more dialogue or detail, or is it a good balance?
Definitely more detail. As said before, I'm pretty lacking in dialogue. My characters get awkward fast. XD
13.) What do you think you do best with writing, and what do you want to improve on?
I write description well, but tend to write super specific sentences, leaving virtually no space for imagination. I really want to improve on my dialogue and overall tying my stories together with each particular ending I have in mind. Sometimes it sounds forced, like I just mashed an ending to a story. :/
14.) Do you prefer to write in first person, second person, or third person?
I most commonly write in first person, just because it is more easily relatable. Anytime I write in 3rd person, there is definitely a reason. Usually if I'm planning on having certain scenes that only the readers see and not the other characters, THEN I'll purposefully write in third. I don't think I've ever written a story in second person. Time to change that. >:)
15.) When you write, do you have any routines that help you (i.e. Any food/drinks you have during your session, music you listen to, etc)?
I LOVE FOOD
BLAGAHWBEIDJWOSNKAJWNDJZJEJFOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDD
I usually end up listening to music (often lyric-less) to help me write, and then binge eat lots of food. Except I get easily distracted by the mounds of food I eat.
16.) At what time of the day do you prefer to write?
I seem to write the best late at night, just because I don't need to worry about what is coming later in the day and I can stay up as late as I want. Then I have a whole chunk of time without interruptions.
What other hobbies do you have besides writing?
Hmm, my hobbies... Well, I love to read in addition to writing. I am involved in so many clubs (can maybe be considered hobbies?) I also do taekwondo.
How long does it take you to write a story? Do you write one at a time, or do you switch between one at a time?
That second question was worded kind of weird haha. I never really "finish" stories, unfortunately. It takes me a lot of effort to stay dedicated to one story. If you're reading this and like one of my stories, please let me know. I don't want to just drop a story that people are enjoying.
Have you ever written inside a public place like Starbucks or Barnes and Noble? If so, how'd it go?
I actually love writing in public places like local coffee shops, (but only with my really close writing friends. (MerryMonster, wolfkitten45, Wolffang12, grey13chan14, and REVENGE2424)
It's slightly awkward writing by myself in public, just because people think that those who are by themselves shouldn't be there. Mainly because they're taking up space in the shop/restaurant/cafe that other people could utilize. Safety in numbers, ya know?
The only bad thing is, the bigger the group, the louder you are. Sometimes I wonder why we haven't been kicked out of various places yet. We seem to love meeting up at McDonalds a lot (because fast food), but as long as we hide in the corner, no one seems to care how loud we are. :)
Have you ever participated in a NaNoWriMo event?
Oh my gosh, I haven't but I am wanting to so bad. The problem is, I want to "finish" some of the ongoing stories I have right now before I begin a long term commitment like NaNoWriMo. (It's a long commitment for ME.)
What piece of advice could you give to another writer?
If I can give a piece of advice and another writer actually takes it, WRITE FOR YOURSELF. I've watched so many incredible authors simply give up their writing because they were pushing themselves too much for their readers. No matter how big your writing gets, whether it's on Wattpad or somewhere else, don't write for others. It's nice to ask your readers what they want sometimes, but write how much you feel comfortable. Don't wear out your fandom to the point you can't bear to think about it.
What are your goals for views, comments, and votes on your story/stories this year?
Um, get more I guess? Lol it's nice to know people are reading your stories, but I like writing. It's the extra cherry on top when other people like it too.
Do you have any idea about what your next writing project might be? If so, can you tell us a little bit about it?
I've tried to not start new projects (like I've been saying.) My newest published story is my book of music stories. I should work on that, as well as my other stories before starting something new. BUUUT of course I've already started something with gangs and beautiful secretive characters with general plot twists. :)
What do you want to have achieved by the end of 2016, writing wise?
PLEASE I NEED TO FINISH SOMETHING TIME SLOW DOWN BRAIN BE BETTER
Same rules: If you've done this, you don't need to again. If you're reading this, you've automatically been tagged. :3
