Ch 6- Go in the Garden
Steven's P.O.V
And so it began. An empire that had reigned across the billions of stars was slowly getting unraveled by the very people that worked to create it. Something that had been built for thousands upon thousands of years was ending and something new would certainly spring up in its place. The beginning....of Era 4.
It's gonna be no easy feat and both the Diamonds and I know that. But since they're choosing to pursue making peace with all that they've done, which will also better our relationship as a whole, Blue, Yellow, and White didn't resist the notion. With how many planets that they've conquered in their never-ending lifetimes, this'll take years to fully complete, but I've got the patience to wait that long. Better that something be done slower and more thoroughly than quicker and more haphazardly. The only thing I fear though is any of the three Diamonds going back on their promise, seeing as this is something that they've believed in for so long. I can't let that fester and constantly worry me though, so in the meantime, I'll put that on the back-burner and focus on the small changes that can be done more immediately on Homeworld itself. Cause, honestly, where better to start reforming than the capital of the civilization itself?
The Diamonds and I held many meetings inside the trial chamber discussing these changes. I wanted to start out small so that it doesn't seem like what I'm asking isn't entirely unreasonable, suggesting that gems be allowed to make decisions on their own and not have to take orders. This, obviously, caused a little bit of a stir along with some surprisingly calm objections about the possibilities that if gems are given what I'm describing that there will be a higher potential for resistance and conflict amongst each other. While I did see that as a valid concern, I then proposed that in the event situations like that actually show to be a problem, I can set up programs to teach gems how to be civil. White, Blue, and Yellow nodded and accepted that idea, though I'm sure they were still uncertain, and we moved on to other topics like dismantling some of the barracks, building houses for the gems on Homeworld, relaxing restrictions on what gems are allowed to do, etc. This in of itself was quite time consuming, as well as exhausting, but I kept telling myself that all the effort is not getting wasted and that it'll all be worth it for everyone once it gets pulled off.
Within these meetings, however, were times that the Diamonds would suggest things themselves and most of the time, it revolved around me. Still as affectionate and apparently caring as ever, Yellow suggested that Pink's old room be renovated to my particular liking, Blue suggested that Homeworld should develop a food development mechanism for me so that I don't starve, which does sound good not gonna lie, and White suggested that there be a place were we can all relax together, though she was looking at me the entire time she said that. The way I see it, if this plan is to succeed and not crash and burn, I'm gonna have to be here to make sure things stay on track, partly because of a reiteration of my still lack of trust in the Diamonds and partly because I'm the one who started all this anyway. So, if I'm gonna be here a while, I might as well make sure that I can live like I would on Earth. I gave the ok on their ideas when they came up, though I have suspicions that they probably would've done them anyway even if I had said no. It's just a part of how the Diamonds act these days.
All this has been about three weeks overall, surprising even me about fast it's gone. In that time though, some changes have already taken noticeable effect here. Even as I walk around the Palace at this very moment, I see more gems walking about with a relaxed feel in their step, their faces presenting more smiles than before as well. I'm truly glad to see that and it really does make me happy seeing others happy too, as well as knowing that I helped them get this way. In the meantime though, I'm heading for the throne room to see how the remodeling is going. I hadn't even requested that they do this but the Diamonds were having their thrones dismantled. I didn't ask them why, mainly because I wasn't sure if they'd be sentimental about it, but I feel like it's another good step in the right direction.
Walking into the very same area right now, I pause and glance across the room, watching as a handful of Bismuths are busy hammering and hacking at the hard crystal seats. A considerable number of gems are also present in the room, though only some stare as well while others are either milling about or just passing through on their way to another part of the Palace. Yellow and Blue's thrones are being chipped at slowly, seeing as they're on the bigger side, but White's hasn't been touched yet, mainly because it's up higher in the air. Pink's throne has already been completely demolished, a pile of pink rubble being all that's left of it, waiting for someone to come cart it away to a forge where the Bismuths will find some way to repurpose the material. It's a truly strange sight to see and I can tell it's definitely making gems feel some type of way about it. It's true that many gems here adored my Mom but the sad thing is that they've never been told the truth about her being Rose Quartz. I could only imagine the commotion that would come from such a heavy revelation. Though it does pain me to think of her and what she'd probably think of all this the Diamonds and I are doing, moving on is just a natural part of life. I hadn't fully understood this before but as I've gotten older, it's one of the many things that I've learned. And I think it's time for everyone else to move on as well, from the Diamonds themselves to all the gems on Homeworld too.
A couple passing gems greet me as they walk past, to which I respond with a nod, a smile, and a polite 'hello'. Though I was already regarded pretty well by a majority of the gems here, the more gems I come across appear happy to see me. Before I think their welcoming expressions had to with the fact that I was cool with the Diamonds. I don't even need to guess why it is now. A presence then comes near my right, but I don't notice it entirely until their voice is heard.
"Um...Steven?" It says, having a rather nervously tone to it.
Frowning, I turn to see who the voice belongs to and come to find none other than Pink Pearl herself standing less than a foot away, broken eye and all.
"Oh, pardon me, Pinky" I say, facing her completely, "I didn't know you would be here".
"No, no, it's fine" The Pearl answers quietly, her foot twisting against the floor, "I...just wanted to thank you...for setting me free from White Diamond's control. We didn't really get the chance to talk before, so I thought now would be better than nothing".
"It's no problem at all" I reply, my hands going in my pockets, "How have you been lately?".
"As well as can be expected" Pink Pearl responds vaguely, "Though I'll honestly admit that all this change happening is a bit unsettling. I don't mean to sound ungrateful about it, it'll just take some getting used to is all".
Sort of nodding in response, I turn back to looking at the deconstruction of the thrones, my gaze once again settling on Pink Diamond's destroyed seat. Still feeling Pink Pearl beside me, I can certainly guess that she's looking at it too.
"It seems like only yesterday that my Diamond was created" Pinky sighs, "Some part of me still does miss her, even though I know it's better to forget about her".
"Why is that?" I politely question, "What was Pink like to you?"
"My Diamond was.....Pink was...." Pink Pearl struggles to say, "She was at times fun to be with and other times not. I loved keeping her happy, seeing her smile as she enjoyed herself. But then there were the times when she got angry. And not even with me. The worst of it though was when she got told no by Yellow Diamond about getting her own colony. I remember she came back to her room, fuming and upset. I asked her what was troubling her and at first, she didn't respond. I kept trying, worried for her, but after a few more attempts, she struck me across the face, putting me to the ground and cracking my eye".
Shocked, I turn to look at her, blown away by what she just said. Pinky now stares at the ground, noticeably sad talking about it. Now as I look over those fractures on her face, it brings about a whole different meaning. Here I had thought that White was the one responsible for mutilating Pinky when it had been Pink all along!
"After that..." Pink Pearl sniffles, her voice scratchy with upcoming tears, "She went to White and had me replaced with another Pearl. When the exchange was made, she walked away without a word, not even saying goodbye. I never saw her again. Then I heard that she was no more after being released from White Diamond's hold. I just wish I could've had another chance with her. Maybe I could've been a better Pearl and be worth something to her!"
Pinky then sinks to the floor, crying into her hands. I then ease myself to the ground and bring her in for a comforting hug. She immediately hugs back, crying into my shoulder. It's amazing the damage that one gem can do, starting a war that shattered countless numbers of other gems, lied to her own allies that were loyal to her, and hurt the one gem that cared for her above all others. With how Pinky described her when angry, it's no wonder that the sobbing Pearl in my arms would want to forget about her, even though she still means quite a lot to her.
"Hey, hey, shhhh" I coo, patting Pink Pearl on the top of her head, "This is in no way your fault, Pinky. You were as best a Pearl as you could be and you still are. No matter if you have one eye missing or have cracks all over you, you're still a great Pearl. You know why? Because the loyalty, love, and tender, caring nature of yours goes unmatched compared to any other Pearl on Homeworld. Mom didn't deserve a Pearl as nice as you".
I then lightly kiss her fractured eye, showing some of my own care for her as I hug her tighter and rest my head on the top of hers. A slight glow then appears in my peripheral vision, making me look down and see the hairline cracks on her right eye shrinking, receding back to the center of her eye before vanishing completely. It takes a second for me to register what just happened and it also takes a few more for Pinky, as she soon pauses and reaches a hand up to her newly healed right eye, obviously feeling a distinct difference.
"You....healed me?" She says in disbelief.
I don't even have time to respond before she comes at me with a hug this time, her grip out of spontaneous joy and relief. Some of the Homeworld gems still lingering in the room stare at the scene we're making but it doesn't really bother me. Heck, all of Homeworld could bear witness and it still wouldn't bother me because knowing that a poor, broken soul like Pink Pearl has finally found some happiness is all the reward I need right now.
"Thank you, Steven" Pinky says after a bit, "I don't know how to repay you".
"How about we be good friends?" I suggest, her pulling back and sitting on her legs.
"You mean serve you, my Diamond?" She questions, tilting her head.
"No, no, no, that's not what I mean" I correct, waving my hands horizontally, "Good friends are those that hang around each other and do fun things together because they enjoy it. Besides, the whole 'serving' thing has been erased by the Diamonds anyway".
"If that's what you want then, I'd be happy to be your good friend!" Pink Pearl smiles.
We then both stand up and hug each other again, really glad of the situation's outcome. Some loud footsteps then lightly shake the floor, alerting everyone in the room that one of the Diamonds was coming. Since it's taking a little bit to get used to the new ways, a couple handfuls of the gems still in the room look slightly nervous. Then, lo and behold, White Diamond emerges from the same hallway I did, looking around for someone that's more than likely me. And, sure enough, her gaze settles on me and she walks over in my direction, Pink Pearl hiding behind me.
"There you are, Steven. I was beginning to worry" White says, kneeling down, "After all, it's nearly time for your evening meal and you haven't shown up to the dining area".
"Yeah, sorry about that" I reply, rubbing my arm, "I was on my way to see Blue to talk about the shutting down of the Kindergartens when I got sidetracked and ran into Pink Pearl".
"Really?" White remarks, interested, "Where is she anyway?"
"Right behind me, though I think she's still a bit frightened of you ever since that whole 'mind control' you did on her for so many thousands of years" I answer.
White Diamond sighs, hugging her arms.
"I can't really blame her, I guess" The tall ex-monarch muses, "Such a shame that so much we do have such long lasting consequences. Makes me wish I could have some way to take it back".
"Trust me, you are, White" I say reassuringly, "By bettering yourself going forward, you improve yourself as a person and can earn people's forgiveness should they choose to give it".
"Hmm, I suppose" White accepts.
"Can we go, Steven?" Pink Pearl whispers behind me, "I don't really feel comfortable here".
"Sure, we can go" I whisper back before turning to White, "Me and Pinky are gonna take a little walk but I'll be back shortly".
"Please do" White smiles, "Just don't be long, please. You know how sad Blue and Yellow get when you're missing for more than thirty minutes".
I nod and usher Pink Pearl out the entryway, keeping her focus in front of us rather than behind. Once the two of us are outside, we slowly walk down the steps that usually lead up to the Palace, her body relaxing as her mind ventures away from White Diamond.
"Oh, thank you" Pinky sighs, shivering for a second, "It's just hard for me to even be in the same room as her without feeling scared".
"Had it been any instance before I originally met her, I'd be right there with you, Pinky" I agree, temporarily thinking back to when I first saw White all those years ago in her chamber, "So, is there anywhere you specifically wanted to go?".
"Actually, yes" She says, stopping and turning to me, "There was this place that was Pink's play spot so many years ago. It was called 'The Garden'. She would go there quite often and play many games with Spinel. I wonder what's happened to it in her absence".
"Who's Spinel?" I ask curiously.
"Oh, she was a gem made solely for the purpose of being a gem's best friend, though she ended up being Pink's playmate the most often. She was such a bundle of joy. I got along with her very well. Sadly, she disappeared a very long time ago, or at least that's what I've heard. The last time I remember seeing her was before I was....replaced" Pink Pearl explains, her tone dipping at the end.
I rub her shoulder to try and help her feel better, not wanting her to be sad all the time.
"Sure, I have no problem going there, assuming that you can lead us there seeing as I have no clue where it is" I say.
Some of her smile returns as I talk.
"Of course. We'll have to travel by Warp Pad. The Garden isn't directly located on Homeworld" She reveals, pointing to the Homeworld Warp Pad in the near distance.
With that, we begin walking again, heading down the smooth, narrow path that connects the Palace to the Warp Pad. Surprisingly, neither of us encounter any gems on the way there, probably because they have more freedom to roam around the planet though would be my guess. In a rather short time, we finally make it up to the platform containing the Warp Pad and step onto it. Pink Pearl then closes her eyes in concentration, the Warp Stream commencing not that long after.
In the span of about fifteen seconds, the two of us reappearing on another Warp Pad but in a very different setting. For a place called 'The Garden', it certainly seems more overgrown and dilapidated than I would've thought. Plants reach up and wrap messily around the columns lining the sides, looking blackened and rotten with age. A fountain near the center has long since stopped working too, its basin completely dry. Overall, everything looks dark and dead, like a place gone to waste because it wasn't maintained well enough. Maybe it makes sense though for a location that was mainly Mom's so many thousands of years ago. The Diamonds probably didn't bother retaining the area because all the memories of Pink were just too painful for them.
As my eyes scan the overgrown area though, I notice something strange that stands out from everything else. A little bit inward, placed about five feet in front of the dysfunctional fountain, looks to be some kind of gem, or at least I think it is. It has light pink skin, light red hair with heart-shaped ponytails, and a white outfit with dark pink shoulder pads and gloves. And the weirdest about it is....she's staring directly at us.
"Uh, Pinky?" I say, getting her attention, "Is that gem over there anyone you recognize?".
Looking over at me first before following my gaze, Pink Pearl glances off in the distance and gasps when she sees who I'm referring to.
"Oh my stars! That's Spinel!" She exclaims.
"Wait, really?" I double back, surprised by what she said.
"Yes, I'm sure of it. Oh my, she must've been here this whole time and nobody knew" Pinky says sympathetically, her hands clasped together.
"Then let's make sure we bring her back with us" I state, her nodding in agreement.
The both of us then carefully step down off the Warp Pad and slowly approach Spinel, not wanting to scare her by doing anything quickly spontaneous. As we get closer, I notice a rather sad and disturbing fact. Spinel's face is set in what looks to be a permanent state of sorrow, her eyes not blinking and her mouth not moving even with our newfound presence. Pink Pearl and I then stop a few feet in front of her, waiting for some sort of reaction. Nothing happens for a while, just stale silence with no kind of movement. I then let out a polite cough, seeing if that will do anything. A few given seconds later and Spinel blinks. Once and then twice and then again once more. Almost as if she's waking up from a deep sleep and taking in the environment around her. Even then, it still takes a bit for her to finally catch on and notice me and Pink Pearl.
"Hello there" Spinel greets, surprisingly cheerful, "Have you seen my Diamond? I was told we were playing a game where I stood here until she returned. Did I win?"
Pink Pearl and I look at each other, nervous about who should tell her about what became of Pink Diamond. I then decide to take the bullet here and step forward towards Spinel.
"Spinel, I don't know the best way to tell you this but...Pink isn't here anymore" I say solemnly.
"Of course she isn't. If my Diamond was anywhere here, it'd mean the game is over" Spinel answers, not interpreting what I said in the manner I was trying to convey.
"No, that's not what I mean" I correct her, rephrasing my words, "I mean that Pink doesn't....exist anymore".
"Wait....what?" Spinel's joyous expression drops, "Y-Y-You mean...."
"I'm sorry, Spinel. But Pink isn't ever coming back" Pink Pearl states sadly.
Spinel's legs wobble and she falls to the ground in a mixture of shock and heartbreak. Pinky and I rush forward, kneeling besides the broken gem as she sobs and wails. Spinel desperately cries out for her Diamond, like a lost daughter calling out for her mother, but there's not really anything Pinky and I can do other than let her emotions run its course. When I attempt to put a comforting hand on her shoulder, her first instinct has her turn and cry into my shirt, which certainly surprises me. Instead of doing anything though, I just sit and let Spinel sob into my chest, Pinky sitting off to the side with a sympathetic expression. We wait for about fifteen minutes and by that time, Spinel has finished crying, pulling away from her close embrace with me and just sitting in silence.
"What do I do now?" Spinel then asks herself rhetorically, "Without a best friend in my life, I have nobody to play and have fun with".
"I'll be your best friend" I offer with a kind smile.
"You will?" Spinel asks excitedly.
I nod and she launches herself at me with a hug.
"Thank you so much, um..." Spinel begins before trailing off since she doesn't know my name.
"Steven" I help her out, sort of informally introducing myself at the same time.
"Thank you, Best Friend Steven!" She exclaims happily, "I'll be sure to make it so that we have many fun times together!"
"And I'll do just the same for you. But, out of everything, I promise to never abandon you like Pink did. Never" I promise, staring Spinel right in her eyes.
Her expression briefly flickers for a second, from happiness to sadness, but then goes to serious with a nod accompanied with some genuine thanks in her eyes.
"For now though, let's take you back to Homeworld and freshen you up" I say, standing up and bringing her up with me.
"Are you sure? Will the Diamonds be mad at me?" Spinel asks, tilting her head at me.
"Not at all, Spinel. Believe it or not, a lot of things are changing these days, changes that impact the entire empire as well as the Diamonds" I tell her.
She seems to accept that, so Pinky and I guide her away from the dilapidated setting of the Garden and to the Warp Pad leading out of here. Before we Warp away, Spinel just then notices Pink Pearl standing next to her and reacts ecstatically. At the same time, I make a mental note to request that the Garden be cleaned up so that in the event Spinel ever wants to come back that it'll at least be presentable. The Pad then activates and the Warp Stream takes the three of us right back to Homeworld.
Instead of ending up on the Pad that we originally left on, Spinel, Pinky, and I end up back in the former throne room, Spinel looking around in awe at everything. There are a lot less gems present than when Pinky and I were here not that long ago but the ones that are here stare and whisper, their gaze pointed directly at Spinel. At this point, I'm hungry for dinner but also am wanting to show Spinel to the Diamonds so that they're aware that I found her, so I begin walking off towards the hallway on the right side of the room, my friends following me by default. Down that hallway we go, going past the door to Blue Diamond's bedroom or "personal chambers" as she likes to refer to it, before then taking a sharp left turn down another hallway. The further we walk, the sounds of mass chattering grow louder until finally we reach the end of the hallway and see the area to which we've now stepped into.
Designed new, the area is basically like a small version of a mall plaza with circular tables made from crystal and a fountain in the center with actual flowing water, but also with these rectangular dispensers that issue food out of them, instead of those mini shops and restaurants you'd typically find. The room stretches out for a decently long length, the ceiling raised to a high enough level as well, but what completes it for me is the open wall at the far end, a sort of porch area tacked on with a railing and open air access that allows one to gaze out into the city-like planet.
Gazing at the outside from where I currently stand, it's actually gotten dark outside, which was something I didn't even think was possible for this planet at first, seeing as how the buildings always glow so brightly. But, after a talk with Yellow about it, turns out that by her order, Homeworld was now required to work where the luminosity of the buildings would go on a brightness cycle, functioning like how the Sun would light the Earth. The buildings would glow brighter around the "day" time and would dim at "night", at least according to the time on my phone, which I'm assuming is what Yellow went by to do this. I thanked her a lot for that but she just waved it off and said it was no big deal. It amazes me how much the Diamonds have changed their planet just for me, even with taking into account the changes that still help the gems here as well. They certainly have my gratitude with this.
"Oh my, what the stars is this place?" Spinel asks, wide-eyed.
"Well, to put in a way that we'll both understand, this is a place where gems can get together to talk and even enjoy human food. While the dispensers that create the food were originally only to make sure that I got enough to eat, a couple curious Pearls tried it themselves and found it enjoyable as well. The news of it then spread as fast as the Diamonds were like taking over planets and more and more gems came to enjoy food like I do" I explain.
"Huh" Spinel answers, "I'd like to try some myself, if that's allowed and okay with you, Steven".
"I also would like to try it" Pink Pearl speaks up.
"Why certainly you two can! There's no restrictions on who can have the food" I say enthusiastically.
There are about fifty dispensers in total, twenty lining each of the left and right wall while the remaining ten are placed around the entryway we came through. I choose my particular favorite on the left, the fifth one down the row. With a simple touch on the dispenser's screen, there's a bit of whirring and a crystal tray slides out from within the machine. Some more sounds are heard and after a little longer, a cheeseburger slides out from the machine as well, placed on the tray by a panel that angles downward. When I had asked how these things work, White gave me a really detailed and overly complex answer that had to do with mixing organic minerals and elements in a sort of instant converter that fused these things together but at that point my brain had just turned to mush. Main point is, they've found a way to create food and I'm not gonna complain about it.
After then getting an ice cream shake from another dispenser a ways down the row, I take my two trays and go sit down at a table near the fountain, Spinel and Pink Pearl sitting on both sides of me. I first take a bite of my cheeseburger but then pass it on to Pink Pearl so she can taste it. She bites into it and chews, a perplexed expression on her face that then turns into one of amazement. Spinel then takes her turn and bites into the burger for herself, her eyes closing and a smile growing on her face as she tastes it.
"Good, right?" I say, politely accepting my burger back from Spinel.
"It's otherworldly!" Pinky and Spinel exclaim in unison.
I chuckle and continue eating.
"There's plenty more options where that came from" I hint teasingly, gesturing to the multitude of other dispensers around the room.
Pink Pearl simply grins while Spinel has stars in her eyes. Pounding footsteps then sound, which is even getting easier for me to predict who's coming. Yes indeed, the Diamonds themselves soon come walking in the room, any other remaining gems having already left the area. Yellow, Blue, and White then shrink down a bit to where they're still taller than me but can also sit with me as well. However, as they approach, each quickly catches on to Spinel's presence. Blue and White gasp, their hands covering their mouths as Yellow raises her eyebrows in surprise.
"It's Pink's little playmate" Yellow remarks intrigued, "Wherever did you find her, Steven?".
"In the Garden" I answer simply, "She evidently left there thousands of years ago by Pink".
"Oh dear, that must've been horrible" Blue Diamond clasps her hands together.
"It was...." Spinel says empathetically, before hugging my arm, "But now I have a new best friend that'll never ever leave me! Steven!"
"That's great!" White Diamond agrees, though I can tell that she's masking jealousy with that enthusiastic reply and smile of hers.
"Do you mind if we sit down?" Blue asks.
I shake my head and the three Diamonds sit down, though they all look a bit unhappy since Pink Pearl and Spinel are sitting right next, therefore making it impossible for them to sit next to me.
"It appears that making friends is something quite easy for you, Steven" Blue keeps talking, sounding jealous as well, "Do they follow you everywhere?".
"Pretty much" I respond, "And actually, I was thinking about letting them stay in my room with me as well".
After hearing that, Blue grips the table so hard that she actually causes a crack to form. I let it go though, finding it quite cute how she, as well as the other Diamonds, displays her jealousy. Shrugging, I finish off my dinner by slurping down the shake and returning the trays to the dispensers from which I got them from. Then, upon returning to the table, Spinel says that she would love it if she could check out, so everybody stands up and together, we all walk out of the room and back into the more recognizable sections of the Palace.
Our little group traverses many twisting hallways going to Pink's old room/my new room from the plaza area, the Diamonds growing back to their normal size along the way. To match the time, the hallways have gotten much dimmer, making it a bit harder to see but not to the point where we're tripping over each other trying to see where we're going. Somehow, we make it all the way there and even find the door without running into something. I then open the door with my handprint and Pink Pearl and Spinel head inside, gazing around the space. The two of them survey every single inch of my room while the Diamonds and I watch them from the doorway. Spinel then hops onto my bed and gazes out the circular window at the city outside, not saying a word. It's understandable, knowing that she's still broken up about Pink. Pink Pearl then lightly sits down on the edge of the bed and lightly smiles at me before turning and looking down at Spinel, silently watching her. At this point, I just shut the door to give those two some piece and quiet, leaving me outside with the Diamonds.
"It must be hard for them, knowing how close they were with Pink. Even closer than we were" Blue sympathizes.
"Just give them time and they'll be fine" I say, staring at the door while thinking about those that are on the other side of it.
"You're a good person, Steven. Far better than any of us could ever amount to or possibly achieve" Yellow compliments tenderly, which is another new change in behavior for her.
"Thanks, Yellow" I reply with gratitude, her nodding in response.
"Oh, I know something fun we can do!" White pipes up, "Let's go sit and relax in Blue's pool!"
"Great idea, White" Blue grins.
I merely shrug in response, seeing no better option at the moment. Blue Diamond then scoops me up in her hands as the Diamonds head right for her pool chamber. My mind is still stuck on how Pinky and Spinel are feeling but maybe this'll put my worries at ease. Looking up at the Diamond's faces, all three of them seem particularly eager and excited, which is always nice to see. I wonder what sort of adventures the four of us will have while the Empire is dismantled. With an ever-changing world with its people changing as well, the possibilities are bound to be endless.
