Chapter 48

"I'm having lunch with your mother." I said opening Jason's office door and just showing my head.

"Okay. What time?" he answered looking at me with furrowed eyes. "Get in and close the door. What are you doing peeping like a thief?"

"I'm leaving in thirty minutes." I rolled my eyes before going in.

"Thirty minutes is not now. Come here."

"I'm going to move my mother into my place." I said walking closer. "The doctors said her conditions improved these past few weeks, but a nurse will be with her at all time." I sat on his desk before crossing my legs.

"It's weird how she got better after leaving that place." He said as his hand went to my calf.

"Yes. I thought the same. Maybe it was the fact that she was too lonely there maybe. Or changing environment was good for her."

I'm just glad she's going to come home with me.

"Why am I not invited to your lunch date?"

"I'm not going to steal your mother. Don't worry." I smiled.

"How do I know that?"

"Calm down, mama's boy. She's all yours." I said and pinched my hand before pushing it away when it started moving up my leg. "Behave."

"I don't want to." He said moving his hand back on my calf.

"Okay." I said quickly getting off the desk. "I'm really going to go now before y-" I gasped loudly and let out a laugh when he pulled me on him.

"Jason, stop!"

"No." He leaned in and I leaned back.

"I said no."

"When have I ever listened to you?" He raised his eyebrows at me and I narrowed my eyes at him. "Where's your ring?"

"Home. I told you I wouldn't wear until we're done with Kevin." I shrugged. "He's not that stupid."

"He actually is." He said and I shook my head smiling.

"You really don't respect him."

"Nope." He said resting his head against my chest before closing his eyes.

I ran my hand through his hair and he let out a sight. "You're not gonna fall asleep here, are you?"

"If you didn't have to leave, I would have." He replied not opening his eyes.

"Well you have twenty-five minutes." I said wrapping my other arm around him.

"How is your mother?" Stella asked after we finished ordering our food. "I plan on going to see her tomorrow."

"She is doing much better." I smiled. "She'll actually start living with me, probably next week."

"That's great. I'm sure being home would do more good than that stupid institute."

I chuckled. "I'm sure."

I don't know how many times I had to tell that it what happened to mother wasn't her fault. She was feeling guilty when it happened and I had to keep reminding her that she couldn't have known. It's like she was even allowed to sleep at the institute, so there was really nothing she could have done.

Once we were done eating, she looked up at me as we were waiting for the waiting to bring the check.

"They still don't know what made her panic that day."

I was taken aback by that. I didn't want to lie to her. But I also didn't know how to tell her without throwing the others under the bus.

"Her memories, I guess. A... About my father."

"Oh." She nodded as they came back with our check. "It's on me, this time." She grabbed it quickly before I could.

"Thank you." I smiled leaning back.

When she finished, we stood up and made our way to the entrance. Well we almost made before someone called her name.

"Stella." We both turned and saw a blond man standing there smiling with his eyes on Stella, who raised an eyebrow at him. "Stella, right?"

I glanced at Stella confused just to see that she had the same expression as me.

"Do I know you?"

He chuckled lightly at her expression. "Our sons used to go to the same kindergarten. They even got into a fight once."

Kindergarten? And he remembers her name after all these years?

"Well my son used to get into a lot of fights." She answered and my eyes just stayed glued on the man. "But that was a long time ago. You still remember my name?"

EXACTLY!

He seems off to me. Or maybe I'm really becoming paranoid.

"Well I was also working for your husband before he fired me for inviting you for dinner. That's why I remember you so well. Lost the best job I ever had that day." He explained as Stella grabbed my hand.

"Well sorry about that. But you still haven't told me your name."

His eyes moved to me and I stared right back at him. "The name is Donovan." He answered her silent question.

Donovan.

I clenched my teeth to force myself to keep a neutral expression and slightly tightened my hold on Stella's hand.

This Donovan. Kevin's Donovan. I'm sure it's him. Coincidences like this don't just happen.

"Is that your daughter?" He asked with his eyes still on me.

"Yes." Stella answered tightening her hold on my hand. "And we really have to go. Goodbye Donovan."

Daughter? Maybe adopted?

Has he looked at us?

He is acting stupid when I know that he knows who I am.

I wondered what I would do if I ever saw my father's murderer. He is right in front of me and all I can do is stare at him. I wasn't prepared to see him before Kevin introduced me to him. He was planning on doing it in a few days.

Stella pulled me out the place before I could even finish registering everything. She directly pulled me to her car where the driver was waiting.

"We're going home. Someone will come take your car."

I furrowed my eyebrows confused.

What's happening?

****

"Now I want you to tell me what is going on. You knew that man." She stated as soon as we sat on the couch of the living-room. "Who was he?"

I just kept my hands on my lap staring at them nervously. "Stella, you were the one that knew. He said his name was Donovan. I never knew a Donovan."

"Victoria. Look at me."

I reluctantly did and she just stared at me not saying a word making me shift on my seat.

"you squeezed my hand when he said his name. Now tell me you have no idea who that man was."

WHY? JUST WHY? And where is Jason when you need him?

"Stella-"

"Tell me." She insisted. "Who was he?"

I bit my lower lip nervously just praying for the front door to open.

"Victoria?"

"Kevin's brother." I said lowly hoping she heard me so I would have to repeat myself.

"And how do you know that?" She asked calmly but I know she was anything but.

"He told me."

She gasped and abruptly stood up. "You're in contact with that man!?" She fumed narrowing her eyes toward me. "And why?"

"I'm helping your husband and sons." I said wanting nothing more than to disappear as I practically saw smoke coming out of her ears.

Somebody, please help.

"I'm going to kill them." She muttered before walking to her purse and took her phone out. "And you let them drag you into this. Being in contact with man. He is pathetic psychopathic that doesn't have sympathy for anyone. If you get hurt, then what are they going to say."

"I'm never alone with him." I tried to explain as she started going through her phone.

"That doesn't make it okay, still." She said angrily placing the phone on her ear.

"Don't 'mom' me, Seb. I want the three of you home now!" She snapped before hanging up.

I wonder what their reaction is after a call like that.

"And you." She pointed a finger at me before taking her seat back. "Tell me everything from the beginning."

****

She just sat back on the couch crossing her legs and staring at the table as I finished telling her everything. "There's more." She said and I shook my head.

"No. I promise that's it."

"No. I'm sure that all you know. But what you're doing is just a small part. I know Hunter. He's way more sadistic than that. He has his own issues with Kevin. So, I can assure you that there is more."

I was even more confused now. There's more?

I sucked in a breath when I heard the front door open and close. It was a short moment before Hunter walked in the living-room, followed Jason then Seb.

"What's wrong?" Hunter asked taking a seat on the other couch, facing the one Stella was sitting on.

Stella didn't say anything and just kept staring at the table.

"Mom?" Seb said from behind the couch I was sitting on. "What's wrong?"

I just kept my gaze down because I could feel Jason's gaze on and I was sure that they knew that I told her everything.

What were they expecting? They should know better than to leave her out of things.

"Is there something you guys want to tell me?" She asked.

"Well I'm sure Victoria told you everything." Hunter said making her move her gaze to him.

"And how come I had to meet Donovan for me to find out what was going on?"

"When? Where did you meet him?" He asked back.

"None of your business. What are you doing with those psychos? And why are putting that girl in danger like that?" She said and I could hear the edge on her voice, like she was ready to just over that table and strangle him.

"When did you meet him?"

"None of your business." She snapped.

"Don't start with me, Ella." He leaned in and he didn't do anything to hide his annoyance.

"You started with me. You need to stop doing that. You've been hiding things since Kevin was released. I don't like it. This is our family. Our problems. You answer my question, or I'm going to look for answers myself. Every time you walk out of this door to deal with him. I'll do the same. Why are you sending Victoria?"

"Kevin trusts her." Hunter finally answered and he didn't look happy about doing it, which almost made me smile.

"Okay." She nodded. "Now I need you to tell me what you're really planning." She said and crossed her arms expectantly.

"I need you to tell me when you met him."

Well they are both stubborn, that's for sure. I sighed as Jason sat down letting out a sigh.

"You don't even know what you've started." He muttered.
