Chapter 30

"What do you mean, mom?"

"He was never far. He is here right now. He listens and watches." She whispered and I swear I couldn't help but look around.

Like I said. I couldn't help it.

"Where can I find him?" I asked. "Do you remember where he was buried?"

"It's a secret." She whispered and and I but my lower once more to keep myself from screaming.

This is really frustrating, and I want to know everything so bad, it hurts.
I stood up and walked around the table and sat on it facing her.

"Mom, I really need your help. Kev- 'The black cat' visited me." I said slowly grabbing her hands.

"I told you not to trust them."

"You were talking about him? Who else? His brother?"

She then turned her head to look at me. "I told you not to listen to them. I told you not to trust them." She said getting agitated.

"Okay. I'm sorry. I don't trust them. You know I don't." I said squeezing her hands reassuringly.

If she gets angry or anxious, this won't end up good. It never does. And something that can put her in a bad state is my father.

I looked around and suddenly I could take her out. I'm sure she would like to see something other than the hospital's garden.
But the last time I asked the doctor, he said that it wouldn't be good, since she was still having her attacks. I will think about asking him again.

"Oh. Your crazy friend is here." She smiled looking behind me.

I quickly turned my head to see a smiling Jason by the door. I looked at him confused.

"What are you doing here?" I asked. "Are you done with your father?"

"Yes." He nodded before turning his gaze to my mom. "How are you Rose?"

"She is stubborn." My mother replied pointing at me, making me gap at her.

Really mom?

"That she is." Jason smirked walking closer. "What did she do?"

I sighed standing up. "Sit down." I said quietly before sitting on the bed as he took a seat.

"I told her not to listen to them or trust them. But she disobeyed me."

My mom is snitching on me. I can't believe this.

Jason nodded in agreement looking at me mockingly. "I confirm. She is stubborn."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Is that why you came?"

"No. There's a emergency at work. I need you there." Jason said, and by the look in his eyes I could tell that it wasn't about work.

Emergency work. Yeah right.

"You can go. Looks like your crazy friend needs you." My mom said before turning to Jason. "Make me wonder what you would do without my little flower."

"I would die." He replied as I smiled getting off the bed to put my heels back on.

"Goodbye, mom." I kissed her cheek and grabbed my purse.

"Goodbye Rose."

"Goodbye Jason." She replied and Jason paused for a moment looking at my mother, then at me with a surprised look.

"So she knows my name."

I chuckled and we left my mother's room. "Of course she does. She just likes to call you my 'crazy friend', like she calls me the 'demon's child'."

We stopped in front of the elevator and I pressed the button. "Kevin was roaming around the hospital."

"When?"

"That's why I came. Don't worry. The men have their eyes on him. He left. I just came to make sure."

I nodded as the elevator doors open.

"This was the emergency?"

He shook his head pushing me in the elevator. "I want to show you something."

"What?"

"Patience. You'll see." He said and I crossed my arms.

"No. I want to know now. Please, tell me." I said almost pleadingly grabbing his arm.

"No." He replied looking at me for a moment before we got to the ground floor.

I just hate this. If he wants to take me somewhere, can't he just tell me where, instead of playing with me like that.
And I'm too curious to tell him that I'm not going.

"You have to tell me."

"I said 'No', Victoria." He said as we started walking through the parking lot and toward his car.

I stopped and and pointed at my car silently.

"I'll send someone." He sighed grabbing my arm and started walking again.

"That's two nights in a row you're kidnapping me."

He stopped by his car before opening the passenger door for me. "As if you don't like it."

I rolled my eyes and got in. He closed the door and walked around getting on his side.

"Are you going to tell me?" I asked again.

"No."

*****

There's no car here. Just trees. We have been in this car for over thirty minutes, and it's killing me.
It would have been better if I knew where we were going. But this man wouldn't tell me anything.

"Jason. Seriously, why is it so far? Where are we going?"

"I'm going to sell you." He replied bluntly and I rolled my eyes looking at the empty road.

And he is driving so fast. If I wasn't used to him driving this way, I would also be having a panic attack.

"I'm dying here." I whined.

"Patience."

"That's all you've been saying. I have been patient." I groaned. "Way too patient. And there are only trees here. You need to slow down. Something can just pop out of and make you hit it."

He let a low laugh and I glared at him.

"I'm being serious Jason."

"Well I don't like driving slowly."

"I'm not suicidal. How is your new assistant by the way?"

"He is living." He replied and I laughed when I was trying to keep a serious face.

"The poor man." I smiled. "I told you if you loose this one, I won't look for another PA for you. You'll find someone else, or do it on your own. Plus, he seems really nice."

He furrowed his eyebrows and turned his head to look at me. "And how would you know?"

"I hired him."

"Not enough to know if he's nice or not."

"Being nice. That's something you should try some time."

"I am nice to some people. You and my parents." He said resting his arm on the center console.

I grabbed his hand intertwining my fingers with his, causing a smile to appear on his face. "What about your siblings?"

"We love each other. We don't have to be nice to each other."

The car then started slowing down before I could reply.

"Where are we?"

I asked again looking at a soft light a few feet from where he parked the car.

"You can wait for a few more minutes to know." He replied and reached for something on the backseat while taking his tie off. "Wear this."

I frowned slightly when he handed me his jacket. "What about you?"

"I'll be fine." He said and opened his car door. "Wear it."

I wore it still confused as he walked around and opened my door.

"Jason, where are we?"

"I told you that I am going to sell you."

There is nothing here. Just trees and the dark. If he leaves me here, I'm going to have a heart attack.

He grabbed my hand and we started walking toward the soft light I saw earlier.
I stopped dead in my track when I looked at the entrance of the place.

A cemetery.

"Jason. Is it-" I stopped myself, weirdly not wanting to finish my sentence.

"Yes, your father was buried here." He replied confirming my doubts. "Do you want to go in? Or maybe another time."

I didn't answer right away and just looked around silently.

"I want to go in."

"Come on."

We again started walking. Our steps were the only things that could be heard, which made me slightly paranoid.
I just know that I was gripping Jason's arm like my life depended on it.

"It's here." I heard him say before he stopped.

I gulped and a knot formed in my throat as I read my father's name on the stone.

Steve V. Mendes.
