Life Is Like Learning To Drive
The title probably amuses you, but hear me out, because I don't think I'm wrong. Having emerged from the tangle of teenage life and entered the tangle of adult life, I've noticed this truth: Life is like a bunch of people trying to learn how to drive all at the same time.
We're all trying to forge our own path, define or discover who we are, all the while juggling school, jobs, friends, and relationships. We're all stumbling around, smashing into each other because we don't know the smart thing to do. We don't know the warning signs. And no one gets out unscathed. Because even those of us who know what we're doing inevitably get smashed into by those who don't. And as time goes on we have fewer and fewer teachers and mentors actually teaching us what to do.
Teenage life, and even adult life, is genuinely like a bunch of 16 year olds given the keys to the car with only a vague idea of how the car works and what to do on the roads. Then the parents say, "Go on," and they try to figure out how to drive. But with no examples, few rules, a whole lot of selfishness, and a misunderstanding as to how much damage can be caused they all go out and drive. And no one gets out safe.
