TWENTY
(a/n: sorry for any mistakes or typos <3)
another day in the underworld: something our angels had become very well accustomed to by now.
all five boys were grouped together at hoseok's house chilling as a movie (that no one was actually watching) played in the background.
hoseok and jimin were having an arm wrestling championship, moderated by yoongi, while jeongguk and taehyung were cuddled up cheering them on from the sidelines.
"jimin, do you workout or what?" hoseok asked, hissing as he shook his arm in pain after jimin had won the last round.
"i mean, you obviously don't. noodle arms." jimin snickered.
"rude!" hoseok shoved him.
yoongi chipped in,"you really do have noodle arms though, especially for a guy who likes to manhandl-"
he was then tackled to the ground by hoseok.
"you're just mad that you like when i manhandle you!" hoseok argued.
"fight! fight! fight!" jimin cheered and taehyung joined in, followed by jeongguk.
eventually, once the commotion had died down, the group naturally fell into a comfortable silence. well, almost silence. the movie still played in the background and small conversations erupted here and there.
when the night neared it's end and the angels figured they'd have to make their way back to heaven, the topic of the library came up seeing as they had to pass through it to get home.
"you found what?" yoongi questioned.
"a book in the library. it was about the origins of angels and demons." jimin repeated.
"what did it say?" hoseok piped up, his interest piqued.
"well, i didn't actually read it. taehyung could tell you word for word, not me." jimin gestured towards taehyung who looked up like a deer caught in headlights.
jeongguk, who had his arm slung around taehyung, looked at the boy in question and asked "so? what was it?"
taehyung gulped slightly before he spoke, "according to the book, angels and demons are... the same."
"wait, what? elaborate?" hoseok urged, eyebrows raised.
taehyung went on, "the book says that angels and demons are evolved from the same species. or, better yet, angels were the original species. demons are angels that evolved differently due to their change of environment, among other things."
hoseok wears a shocked expression whilst jeongguk's face is unreadable.
"you're bullshitting." yoongi speaks up.
"i'm not, i swear. it's what the book said." taehyung insisted.
"he's not lying. it was in the book." jimin confirmed.
"and where is this book? you said you didn't even read it. how do you know taehyung's telling the truth?" hoseok questioned.
jimin looked to taehyung for some sort of way to prove that they weren't lying.
taehyung looked around the room before spotting a mirror hanging on the wall.
shrugging jeongguk's arm off him, he strode up to the mirror, touching it with his palm when his eyes suddenly glowed white.
taehyung didn't like to use his powers for much. they only reminded him of how different he was to other angels, considering how different his powers were. however, in certain circumstances, he was glad he had them. like right now.
"show me the book." he chanted and all of a sudden the reflection of the mirror warped, altering into the image of the open book that taehyung had seen that night. it was like looking through taehyung's memories, like looking through his eyes.
the three demons, still not used to taehyung's powers, were shocked to say the least.
"it's in greek?" hoseok questioned, wearily coming closer to the mirror.
"taehyung can read greek but i can't. that's why he's the only one who read the book. go on, read it, tae." jimin urged him on.
and so he read them exactly what he'd read to himself that night.
"...and so, like this, what we now call demons were seperated from angelic society and all mention of the civil dispute of angel society that lead to this seperation is now taboo. in the near future, it may even become forbidden. that's why i must hide this book immediately, somewhere that no angel nor demon will ever find." taehyung finished.
"whoever wrote the book hid it but someone in heaven must've found it and locked it away in that library to stop anyone from reading it." jimin explained.
taehyung abruptly pulled his hands away from the mirror, clutching his head with a hiss.
jimin jogged up to him, "are you okay?"
"it's fine, just- i shouldn't use my powers for so long. i held the same image for too long and my head is killing me." taehyung waved him off, hand suddenly flying up to his nose only to pull it back and see blood on his palm.
jimin, seeing the blood dripping from taehyung's nose, lead him towards a chair to sit down.
in the midst of their discussion and taehyung's sudden spell of dizziness, they hadn't looked towards the demons in a while.
hoseok and yoongi looked like they'd just found out their entire lives were lies. but, i mean, they kind of were.
everything they thought they knew about their history had changed tonight all because of two little angels and some random book.
jeongguk was... well, no one really knows how he felt in that moment. to this day, the emotion jeongguk felt in this very moment of that night is indescribable. he sat there on the couch, not moving a muscle. barely even blinking.
once taehyung was settled in a chair, glass of water in hand and a tissue to his nose, jimin walked up to the three demons carefully.
hoseok, noticing his approach, looked up, "i just- i can't even begin to understand this."
"my brain is literally dissolving right now." yoongi slumped back onto the sofa, running a hand over his face.
out of nowhere, jeongguk stood up and, just like that, he was gone.
he stormed out of the front door. going where, you ask? only the gods could have known.
but taehyung wanted to find out.
so, with zero hesitation, taehyung ran after him. ignoring jimin's calling out to him telling him he needed to rest and dismissing both yoongi and hoseok's warnings to leave jeongguk alone.
"jeongguk! jeongguk, please stop! what's wrong?" taehyung called out to him when he laid eyes on him. he wasn't running but he was walking very fast... angrily? but taehyung didn't understand. why would he be angry?
once he had caught up to him, he stood in front of him and placed his hands on his shoulders, "jeongguk stop."
"what?" the other boy asked.
"don't what me. tell me what's wrong, why are you so upset?" taehyung asked.
"because what is there to not be upset about in this shitty life?!" jeongguk yelled, sounding physically exhausted, before pushing taehyung away and continuing to walk.
taehyung, still slightly faint, stumbled a bit but held his ground. he continued to follow him.
"i don't understand, jeongguk, please."
"and you never will understand."
"yeah, if you won't tell me!"
"you don't have to understand so i don't have to tell you anything!"
"what don't i have to understand? what is it that you're so plagued by that, for some reason, i don't have the right to know about?"
jeongguk stopped abruptly, turning to look at him, "you don't have to understand because you're never going to experience it! you don't have people beating you to a pulp, giving you death threats, harassing you on the street all because you're mixed, do you? you don't have to beat people to the brink of death to get them to leave you the fuck alone, do you? no, you don't! and you never will have to experience any of that!"
"so you understand being mixed better than me? someone who is actually mixed?!" taehyung argued.
but when jeongguk went silent, refusing to make eye contact, it clicked. everything clicked.
taehyung stepped closer to him, carefully placing a hand on his cheek, "you're mixed too, aren't you?"
after a long pause, jeongguk spoke, "my life could've been so much better. i couldve been so much better. but instead i got this. i got me."
"what d'you mean?" taehyung frowned.
"don't you get it?! demons used to be angels, yeah? that means that if it wasn't for all that shit that went down, i could've been an angel. i could've had a perfect life, i could've just been perfect like you. but no! as always, i'm the one who gets fucked over." jeongguk vented, attempting to pull away from taehyung but the other boy wouldn't let him.
wrapping his arms around jeongguk's neck in an embrace, he said, "trust me, heaven isn't as great as it sounds. i know that seems ridiculous but it's true. heaven isn't perfect... at least, not for people like us."
with a sigh, jeongguk wrapped his palms around the smaller boy's waist before nuzzling into his neck, "you know i'll never believe it until i see it."
"i know... but just know that it's true. you know i'm a terrible liar." taehyung moved back slightly, coming into eye contact with the demon.
and, just like that, taehyung had done it. he'd calmed him down, grounded him. an achievement that taehyung was proud of, considering jeongguk's nature.
standing in the middle of the street, the dull moon glowing in the red-tinted sky, the two were at peace.
two beings, so different yet so uncannily alike.
after planting a kiss to the other's lips, jeongguk spoke...
"take me there."
"what?"
"take me to heaven."
BONUS SCENE: (aka, i didn't know how to work this in)
"what do you think they're doing? it's been half an hour." jimin asked, looking towards the remaining two demons.
the two looked at eachother, looked at jimin and then spoke in unison.
"fucking. they're probably fucking." both yoongi and hoseok said.
"WHAT?!" jimin screeched, scandalised.
"well, what do you think they're doing?" yoongi asked with a yawn.
"well, making out would be my most intense guess." jimin said, knowing how innocent his best friend was.
"jeongguk's a demon of lust and you think taehyung gets away from him with just hugs and kisses? be serious." hoseok said before throwing a hand over his mouth.
"so jeongguk's a demon of lust?! finally, i got the answer!" jimin cheered.
he'd been curious about jeongguk's race for so long.
"i'm also a demon of wrath, in case you were wondering." jeongguk said, standing in the doorway with taehyung at his side.
jimin began, only to be interrupted, "wait, you're mi-"
"no time to explain, we need a plan." taehyung cut him off.
"a plan for what?" yoongi asked.
taehyung and jeongguk looked at eachother for a second before replying.
"you guys are going on a field trip."
