SEVEN
the next morning, taehyung practically jumped down the stairs.
he slept through his alarm and was running late which wasn't like him at all.
he was the perfect student, after all.
so when his mother saw him dashing across the living room to pick up his bag, she was thoroughly confused.
"tae? i thought you left already." she raised an eyebrow at him as she pushed her breakfast around her plate with a fork like a child would.
kim areum. taehyung's mother was an incredibly skinny woman with long dark hair reaching her hips. she had spotless skin, plump lips, a button nose, piercing eyes and pretty freckles. her legs were long and her shoulders were on the wider side. she looked like a model in regards to both her body and face. no wonder her name meant beauty.
taehyung definitely took after his mother in terms of looks.
said boy dashed into the kitchen, grabbing an apple frantically, "i slept past my alarm."
areum raised her eyebrow a second time at this confession.
her son? late? since when?
she wasn't angry about it, just shocked.
the reason she had thought he'd already left is because he usually swept away without saying goodbye a whole half an hour before now.
"i gotta go." he spoke before kissing his mother's cheek and disappearing out the front door.
she placed her hand upon her cheek in the spot her son had laid his lips.
did her son just kiss her? did her son just show affection? in fact, had her son just talked to her at all?
she was used to barely hearing taehyung's voice twice a week.
all this was too much to take in so she concluded that she had perhaps been drinking a little too much vitamin juice and coffee lately. maybe it was messing with her cognitive ability.
she shook her head, snapping herself out of it before beginning to do the dishes.
meanwhile, with taehyung...
the boy ran across the courtyard of his school, pushed open the glass front doors and then proceeded to book it to his math class.
when he arrived, he stumbled into the class, opening the door with a thud as it hit the neighbouring wall.
"sorry i'm late." he panted.
everyone immediately looked at him.
they all thought he died or something.
why?
because since when was the kim taehyung ever late?
his teacher was also extremely shocked.
"uhm, you'll have to do a- a detention after school... you can sit." she said slowly, slightly stuttering in disbelief.
taehyung immediately took a seat.
oh my gosh, i have a detention.
what the heck?!
i've never done that before!
fuck!
wait...
did i just swear?!
AHHHHH!!!
all of a sudden, he felt a tap on his shoulder.
he turned around and was met with the curious and worried eyes of his best friend.
"bro, where the fuck was you?! i thought you got kidnapped!" jimin whisper-yelled.
"i slept through my alarm!" taehyung whispered back.
"since when does that happen?!" jimin said, still in a panic.
"maybe since i stayed up til an ungodly hour with you doing things we really weren't supposed to be doing, damn!" taehyung said matter-of-fact-ly.
"okay maybe that's a good reason but still!" jimin scratched the back of his neck.
taehyung rolled his eyes, "what do you even do in detention?"
"you literally just sit there from half an hour to two hours. since you're just late and you never usually are, it'll probably be only thirty minutes." jimin said.
"you two! don't make me extend your detentions to an hour." the teacher called out to them.
"sorry, miss." they muttered in unison.
~after class~
as they walked out of the classroom, taehyung spoke.
"so how did you get detention?" he asked.
"i broke that guy's finger again because i thought he was the reason you weren't at school." jimin admitted casually.
"and you only got half an hour?!" taehyung screeched.
"yeah, duh. all the teachers know i won't stay for longer than that." jimin rolled his eyes.
"why did you even think it was him?" tae asked.
"i mean, he locked you in the janitor's closet the first time i broke his finger so since you were late i thought he'd done it again." the small boy shrugged.
"fair enough." taehyung hummed.
"since when do you approve of me injuring people?" jimin raised an eyebrow.
"i never said i approved, i'm just not arguing against it." taehyung giggled.
"and since when do you not argue against it?" jimin laughed.
"since now." the taller boy replied, leaving it at that.
jimin looked up at his best friend and noticed something different.
it wasn't his disheveled hair (probably from not having time to brush it), it wasn't his loose tie or his un-tucked and un-ironed shirt. although those things were all strange for taehyung too since his appearance was always in pristine condition.
no no no, the thing that caught jimin's eye was the slight smile that adorned his face.
his small smile, the little pep in his step, the way his skin seemed to glow even after practically no sleep.
something was definitely off about his soulmate.
but, a good kind of off, nonetheless.
jimin had sort of expected taehyung to be slightly traumatized by the events that had occurred the night before. however, taehyung seemed unfazed.
he almost looked...
happy? dare he say.
"what's got you so cheery today?" jimin decided to ask, after observing him for a minute or so.
"what d'you mean?" taehyung almost sang.
"you just seem a bit... strange today. i mean, a good strange but still strange." jimin elaborated.
"that's because i am strange, jiminie." taehyung smiled.
now jimin was even more confused.
since when was taehyung happy about being strange? about being different?
at this point, jimin decided to let it go.
he was just happy to see his taehyungie smiling. his soulmate.
"you sure are." jimin slightly laughed, intertwining their pinkies as they walked.
and so the teenage boys swung their attached pinkie fingers as they skipped down the hallway to their biology class, giggling at nothing like little kids.
~time skip~
so yknow how i ended the last chapter with "time to truly fly"?
well, perhaps taehyung took that too literally.
an angel's wings start to push through at the age of two years old. it's sort of like teething in the sense that they're quite uncomfortable until they finally emerge.
angel wings are also very powerful. they grow as you get older and at the age of eighteen they reach their full potential. an angel's wing is basically just pure muscle protected by skin and a shit ton of brilliant white feathers. a hit to the head by a wing flapping at full force once accidentally killed another angel.
it was part of school, workplace and store (and pretty much any closed space's) rules that angels were not to fly.
this is simply because it's very inconvenient and unsafe.
angel wings are not exactly small so if a hundred hormonal teenagers who's wings are almost fully mature are trying to get to their classes down one corridor, and they all started flapping them it would be extremely hazardous for obvious reasons.
taehyung threw this rule out the window though because it was currently just before the end of the school day that he and jimin were wizzing down the corridor while a teacher hollered after them.
he and jimin laughed wildly as they speared through the air. as they flew past, papers were ripped off of notice boards, lockers were dented and teachers opened their classroom doors, wondering what the ruckus was about.
the teachers and students that peeked out of their classrooms were shocked to see the school's golden boy piercing through the air in the hallway.
"boys! stop this instant!" the man yelled hysterically.
"come catch us!" jimin laughed.
taehyung sighed, revelling in the feeling of the air harshly hitting him in the face and whipping his air around like crazy.
they got to the balcony in a matter of seconds thanks to the great speed of their wings and immediately flew off of the railing and completely out of school grounds.
"whoo!" taehyung cheered.
"now that, my friend, is how you dodge detention in style!" jimin yelled in sheer excitement.
taehyung sighed once more, enjoying this thrill that he had never experienced before.
"well this is something that those assholes will be whispering about for weeks." jimin muttered, rolling his eyes in amusement.
"let them!" taehyung chuckled before swooping downwards, landing on his feet with grace.
jimin followed shortly after, stumbling a bit as he forgot how it even felt to fly, "fuck, i haven't flown in so long."
"me either." taehyung panted, dusting off his clothes.
"now what?" jimin asked, enjoying this reckless taehyung that he had for the day.
it felt like he was bestfriends with a whole new person but, at the same time, he could still feel that he'd known him for years.
"ice cream?" taehyung suggested.
"ice cream." jimin nodded.
~time skip~
the two boys sat in taehyung's room, on his bed, watching a random show, stuffing ice cream in their mouths and talking about nonsense.
it was refreshing since usually taehyung would brush off hangouts with "i have to study" or "i have homework". jimin would take these answers because he knew of taehyung's social anxiety. he knew that being in social situations mentally and physically exhausted taehyung.
that's why they were soulmates. jimin knew things about taehyung that even his parents didn't know.
"so, i know i let it go earlier but seriously, tae. what happened to you today?" jimin asked, out of pure curiosity. he still couldn't wrap his head around this drastic change in his best friend's personality.
the only thing they'd done differently recently was going to the underworld but jimin couldn't see why that would make taehyung so extremely happy and daring.
taehyung fell back onto his bed and breathed out a long breath.
"have you ever had a self-realisation?" taehyung spoke.
"not really. i mean, i realised i was a homosexual? does that count?" jimin said.
taehyung snickered, "yes it counts."
"okay then, yes." jimin giggled.
"well, when i got home last night or- this morning i guess, i had one. i kinda just realised that i should stop being so bland and actually live life for once." taehyung admitted.
"finally!" jimin screamed.
taehyung shoved him and laughed before starting, "i was thinking..."
"what?"
"wanna go back to the underworld?" he whispered.
