WARNING: Gore, cannibalism, mentions of suicide, implications of internalized homophobia
CLARIFICATION: This takes place in an AU that I made and you can find in my profile, quick summary this all happens in a purgatory that, because of an incident, it can't let it's souls ascend, this does not affect the plot of the main story, but the phones will be an element that will be seen in future chapters with a example of how they are used
Every step hurt as she placed her feet against the floor. One with a sprain, another almost completely broken. Even so, the will to avoid a worse death led her to continue running as long as she could.
After a while, she collapsed against a wall, knocking over a small table with her. Hitting the ground with her left arm, she let out a groan, feeling her bones creak again.
She saw her stomach open, and as she pushed the intestines back into her body, she thought that maybe this time, if she was lucky, she would just bleed out on the floor.
Her thoughts were distracted when she heard chanting in a language unknown, probably to any human on earth. Alarmed, she searched for its origin, finding a landline a few meters away. She shuffled a little and hung up the call, relieved to see that it had stopped, remembering that normally that's what they should be ringing before someone calls. Or normal by the standards of the place they were in.
She looked at it once more, thinking for a moment. She didn't have the strength to get up and find something to end her suffering. Junko was probably close to her, ideally still looking for her and maybe, just maybe she would have lost any trace of her and gone somewhere else.
A bit of remorse gnawed at her as she thought about why she had left her room. She remembered that Sayaka had asked to see her alone in the cafeteria later. Her heart had jumped at that moment, and her conscience scolded her for considering that her feelings were going to be reciprocated.
Surely she would have heard about that incident. She knew that she had no justification, she knew that she deserved to die, that she shouldn't have even considered hiding, much less in... She would probably tell her that she didn't want to have anything to do with her, that she couldn't believe that she would do that to her, that she wouldn't care if she died and never came back.
She stood her up anyway, she reasoned. At least she could give her an explanation. She could ask her to please talk to her while she bleeds out, to not let her die alone, that everything was going to be okay. That this would be the last time she would have to go through this.
"Or maybe you just want her skin all over you again? You don't know the favor you'll do for her when you die once and for all."
She dialed the phone, putting in the date she had died.
On the first attempt, no one answered. She scolded herself when she started trying again, thinking that she might not even be in her room, that she was just wasting time. Despite everything, that effort had been worth something, with the singer answering on the other end of the line almost immediately this time.
"Hello?" It was rare to receive calls in the purgatory, the phones almost never appeared and were difficult to notice most of the time. She placed the letter and the flower that she planned to give to the detective on her nightstand, next to the phone that had appeared while she wasn't looking. "Who is this?"
"It's me—" She only noticed when Maizono reacted the pain that her voice exposed.
"Kirigiri!? Are you Ok!? Where are you!?" She had some faith that she could get her out of wherever she was. "What happened!?"
"Enoshima." With the mention of that thing she didn't need to know a lot of details. "I think I managed to lose her, but she can find me again." If that was the case, she hoped she could cut the call before something happened and save that girl the trauma. Even if her feelings for her weren't romantic she would have, since she had to see enough horrible things happen, she already knew how she felt...
"Tell me where you are, I'm going to get you out of there!"
"No, she might find you. Stay there." If something happened to her, she would never forgive herself.
"I'll bring whoever there is to help, just tell me!" She squeezed the cable with one hand, feeling how the strength of her voice was fading. "Please, I could stop her from hurting you..."
"...Alright. Just promise me that you will come with more people, with weapons." She felt horrible watching how she tried to help her, knowing that she never was or would be able to return her the favor. After listening footsteps on the other side of the wall, she tensed. "I'm in the hallway that leads to the gym stairs. Don't come yet, I hear something, I think it's her."
"I will go with Kaede and Ibuki, if possible also Mikan. They shouldn't be too far away. Just resist..."
That didn't completely reassure her, but she accepted it. Taking a quick look down the hall to the right, where the stairs were, she took a deep breath.
"I'm sorry I couldn't go with you." She apologized, thinking that if she really wanted to burn the bridge between them this would just make it easier.
"It's not your fault..."
"I understand if you don't want to see me again, after everything I did to you... I understand if you wanted to call me to tell me that alone."
"What? No! I didn't want to talk to you because of that." Kyoko, even with her words, had no faith that she would love her at some point. She had decided it was easier not to deal with it, to live with those feelings for God knows how long and not say anything.
"You have died so many times because of me, the fact that I also think that... Nothing, it's ridiculous anyway..." Ridiculous she considered it to be deserving of her compassion, concern and friendship, to also want to take their relationship to something romantic seemed directly to her an act of pure selfishness.
"What is it? I'm sure whatever you're thinking is normal..."
"That you could even love me." Finally she had enough inside, she reasoned that that was more than enough for her to let her die without having to suffer for harming her, that she would be disgusted with her and leave her to rot. "I don't deserve you loving me the same way I love you."
A shock flooded the singer, and if the circumstances were different, so would joy. She wanted to find the words as soon as possible to tell her that she loved her, that it was all right. Of course she wouldn't say them in time.
"It's the first time you're right in a long time." A voice spoke, half mocking, to the detective's left. She had found her.
Before she could say anything, Maizono froze, listening in horror to the sound of flesh being separated. She didn't know how long she had spent hearing that, only that when the silence finally came, she let the tears fall down her face. She got up and started looking for her companions, who, noticing her stress and panic, followed her almost without asking.
When she finally arrived, Sayaka hurried to lift her body, with her neck shattered and her stomach open, marked with human teeth and finger nail marks. Doing her best to ensure that no other organs fell out, she took her to her room, wishing that the moment she returned she would be able to be there.
I hope you liked this short that I wrote while I was out of power at the end of last year. As I said before, this doesn't affect the chronology of the Purgatory AU, but if it shows something that will appear eventually, don't worry, I'll still give an example of how it's used.
Oh, and in case you're wondering, yes, they end up together, don't worry. I love my dead gay* girls too much to want to separate them jsjsj.
Anyway, have a happy Valentine's Day and/or a good day, afternoon or night, bye!
*Term used for reference only, they're bi4pan
