Chapter 5

Thursday came around, the day of the dance. I was at my locker, talking to Cleo, I told her about when I asked Dustin to the dance and she was trying to convince me to go anyway. "I still think you should go", she said, "Me and Amy will be there and Harper and Robyn". Harper and Robyn were a couple of Cleos cheerleading friends. And they were twins with dark green eyes and long light brown hair with natural blonde highlights. I didn't talk to them much though, but I would join Cleo when she wanted to hang out with them. "Maybe", I said, putting stuff in my locker. "Come on, it will be fun", she pleaded. "Fine" I said, I really didn't want to go anymore, but Cleo was my best friend and she was gonna come with me, so why not?
"Perfect, so how about you come over after school so us and some girls from the cheer squad can get ready", she suggested. "Sure", I said with a sigh. After that, she went on and on about the dance and this new expensive dress that she was gonna wear. It made me think of my clothes and I wondered if they were as good as hers. We usually wear similar clothes, but something about hers made them look better on her than me. I've always been a little jealous of her for that.
Anyways, she talked about it for a while until the bell rang for lunch to end. The last couple classes I had left that day went by surprisingly quick, and before I knew it, I was walking my way over to Cleos house. She didn't live very far away from me, so it only took about ten minutes to get there.
When I got to the door, I rang the doorbell. The door opened faster that my eyes could even blink and Cleo grabbed me by the arm and quickly pulled me in, shutting the door. "Whoa, Cleo what's the rush?", was the first thing I said. She held up two pairs of shoes and asked, "Which ones do you like better, these or these?" I looked at them and said "Either of them are fine". "Alright, but what about you? What are you gonna wear?",she asked. I hadn't really thought about what I was going to wear to the dance. If Dustin was going, I would care a lot more about it. "I don't know, whatever you think, I guess". She looked at the outfit that I was already wearing and said "Well, come on, me and the girls will help you". She motioned for me to follow her upstairs, into her bedroom. Once we got there, I saw almost the whole cheer squad. They were all dressed in fancy expensive-looking dresses. They also had their hair done, and some of them were wearing jewellery. Once I stepped in the room after Cleo, they all stared at me, probably wondering why I looked so dull compared to them. I didn't really know what to say, so I just kinda went "Um.....hello". The next thing I knew, they had me sitting in a shiny chair in front of a big mirror on Cleos pink wall. One girl was standing beside me, doing my makeup and another girl was behind me, doing my hair. The rest of them were crowded around us. Cleo came up to me with a silver coloured dress and told me to try it on in the washroom across the room. She had her own washroom by the water. So I took it with me as soon as the squad girls finished my makeover. Once I had it on, I took a look at myself in the mirror, studying how different I looked. I saw a whole new me, if you know what I mean.
"Come on Zoe! Show us the dress!"Cleo called. "Coming!" I called back. I opened the washroom door and took a step out. They all stared again, but this time, it was in amazement. They all started complimenting me, it was kind of like the daydream I had before, except Dustin wasn't there.
I had tried to take my mind off him for at least a little while. Then during that spare time before we left for the dance, they started talking about shoes, makeup and things like that. But then the subject of "boys" came up, that's when one on them asked me this, "Do you like anyone, Zoe?" I blushed. "Well, there is someone im kind of into", I told them. They were all over me in a second. "Who is it?", they asked, repeatedly. I decided to just tell them. It's not like I had anything against any of them. I swallowed and said as 'cooley' as I could, "Dustin". "From the basketball team?", one of them asked. I nodded. "He's cute, you should ask him out", she said. "Well, I did ask him to tonight's dance, but he said he had a game", I explained. "Oh, well that's to bad", the girl said. I just shrugged, not knowing what to say. Luckily, the conversation moved along to something else, and before I knew it, Cleos mom was driving us to the dance in her big nice-looking van. It felt kind of like a limo, but for a good amount of time, Cleo went on to her mum about why she should have a car and a license, being fifteen and all.
We were a bit early when we showed up, so we had to wait by the front door until someone let us in. By the time one of the staff members opened the door for us, there was already a big crowd waiting to get in aswell. The dance took place in the gymnasium, which was obviously the biggest room in the school. The DJ was setup in front of the bleachers, taking song requests from random students. I was around Cleo, Amy and the cheer squad, trying to enjoy myself as much as I could, when suddenly I got really thirsty.
I told Cleo and Amy that I would be right back, then left the gym to go to the water fountain in the hallway. As I bent over, taking a drink, I heard voices from the other hallway behind me. I was curious about who it was so I peaked from behind the wall and you will never guess who I saw. It was Dustin, talking to a girl, a girl!, A GIRL!
