Chapter 13

As soon as Andrew finished speaking, the first group of people were already getting on the raft, took a puzzle piece from Andrew and were pulling themselves over to the other side of the pond. Hana and the rest of her class watched as the group pulled the raft across the pond.

Once the raft reached the other side of the pond, Ryan and Lok stayed behind to pull the raft back to the side Hana was on. By the time the raft reached her side of the pond, it was a mess. Hana's group, the group who stayed had forgotten to decide who was going to go next, resulting in a mess of people hesitating whether to get on or not. Hana stood at the back, not knowing what to do. I guess I'll just go with the last group, she thought. Hana had no intention of getting into that mess.

Hana watched as the raft went back and forth across the pond. Now, it was once again back on her side of the pond. There weren't many people left, just about 10-15 of them left. Hana was about to step back to wait for the last trip when Teng said, "Hana! What are you doing? Get on!"

Hana reluctantly stepped onto the raft. To be more accurate, it was more like she was being pushed amidst the chaos of deciding who to get on the raft. There was about 8 of them on the raft now, all of them starting to pull the raft to the other side. Hana followed them, grabbed the rope and started pulling. Since she was already on the raft, she might as well do her part. But the rhythm at which the rest of the her classmates were pulling the rope was too fast for her and it was difficult to pull because the raft was so heavy with everyone standing on it. Hana's hands burned every time she pulled the rope.

After what felt like eternity, they had reached the other end of the pond. Everyone quickly got off and Sasha, who was holding the puzzle piece, took the piece to the group who was currently squatting down and piecing the puzzle together.

"One minute and thirty seconds left!" Andrew called out.

Upon hearing his voice, the guys on the raft started pulling faster.

Everyone was beginning to cheer the last group of their classmates on. Hana didn't join in. She didn't like doing cheers and shouting out loud. It wasn't her style. She was an introvert.

Everyone waited for their classmates as the raft slowly approaches.

"30 seconds!" Andrew said.

Once Shaun heard that, he threw the puzzle piece onto ground and jumped over as soon as the raft was close enough to the shore. He then quickly picked up the puzzle piece and handed to Carrie who was assembling the puzzle. As he did so, the last of their classmates finally arrived.

Andrew announced, "Ok, you guys did it within the time limit. But there's something I want to say. Shaun. I know you want to finish the game within the time limit but you shouldn't have jumped. What happens if you fall in the pond? What if the water was deep? I know you want to win the game badly but remember, your safety is also important, ok?"

Shaun nodded quietly.

Mr Yee stepped forward and said, "Andrew is right. Before you all do anything dangerous, please think of your safety. You wouldn't want your parents being worried, would you?"

After Mr Yee finished talking, everyone followed Andrew and trudged behind him quietly, barely talking. Jeesh, what's the big deal about that? Hana thought. At least Shaun didn't fall in the pond. And, the pond wasn't even deep for God's sake. We're not kids, ok? We know how to take care of ourselves, Hana thought angrily.

It seems that there were also other people thinking the same thing. Hana could hear Steph ranting to her best friends, Lok and Ting, from behind her.

Upon seeing the pavilion coming back into view, Hana knew they were once again back at their camp. Everyone trudged into the pavilion. Andrew turned and said, "Time to shower. Get your stuff and once you're done, we'll gather at that empty spot over there."

Hana followed her "roommates" to their tent and went in to pick up her stuff. It was really squeezy and hot in the tent, with all of them now inside the tent taking their toiletries.

Outside, Lyn said, "Hurry up! We're the first to shower for today. The other classes will be coming back soon."

First to shower? That's great. At least the toilet was clean to shower in. Hana couldn't imagine what it would be like when others had used it before them. She took her stuff and headed to the toilet. By the time she reached there, all the cubicles were already occupied. She had to wait. But she was still lucky that her class didn't have many girls. She wouldn't have to wait very long before it was her turn.

A while after the second group of girls went in, the other classes were starting to come in and the queue outside the toilet was getting longer. Well, lucky we're the first to shower. Hana thought.

After dinner, Andrew led them around back to the camp and said, "Get your torchlights. And have a short break. We'll meet back here in about 10 minutes."

After 10 minutes, they were once again following Andrew. He had led them to a foyer where a couple of other classes were already there.

They must have been the last to arrive because a guy that looked Amercian went up in front of everyone gathered in the foyer and addressed them, "Ok, we'll be conducting a night walk a while later. So just sit back and relax for now. I'll be back once we're ready to start."
