CHAPTER ONE

It was the middle of the night here in Atarak, the stars were glistening like diamonds. It was a new moon tonight, so all you could see of it was a glimmer of a circle darker than everywhere else.

Of course, as I was dodging blasts of fire, I didn't have much time to stare at it.

"Is that all you got Flare?" I challenged, jumping off the wall, and kicking him in the gut. Flare stumbled back, but never fell over. He flipped backwards to avoid falling and shot another blast of fire, which I dodged. It singed my wings though.

"You of all people should know the answer to that Streak," Flare responded, aiming a roundhouse kick to my face, which I backed away from.

"Flare! I got the civilian away!" I scowled as Flare's sidekick, Grounder, called out to him.

"Looks like you failed to kill your target, Streak," Flare smirked, and then I did as well.

"That's what you think."

I shot pulled a throwing knife out of my pocket, and threw it in Grounder's direction. Just like I thought, he dodged it and it pierced the old man right between the eyes.

"Well, that's my job done," I smiled, dusting myself off, and flapping my wings.

"You monster! He had a family and friends! People who care about him!" Grounder yelled.

I rolled my eyes, but didn't respond, as I flew up into the air.

"Well, it was fun! I need to be going now though, hope you don't mind," I smiled at them, and they both glared up at me. The perks of having wings, right?

"Get back here!" Flare yelled, sparks coming from his hands as I flew away. I suppressed the urge to snicker at them.

After a couple minutes, I landed in an alleyway, and my wings disappeared. I went behind a garbage bin, and opened up my bag I had left there, changing out of my bloody dark pink hoodie and black shirt and sweatpants, into a white shirt, gray sweatpants, and a clean hot pink hoodie. I pulled my black doctor mask off, grabbed the face cloth, and poured some of my water bottle onto it, wiping the blood off of my face and hands. I'd have to get Pearl to wash my outfit again. Once I had finished cleaning off, and had changed into clean clothes, I zipped close my bag, threw it over my shoulder, and started walking home.

Now is probably a good time to introduce myself, and explain what just happened, so...

Hi! My name is Ellianna Nilano Terrilynn, my nickname is Ellie, and I'm a white girl in Grade 8 that lives with my cousin, sister, aunt, and uncle. I'm 5 feet, have blond hair that's cut shoulder length, and blue eyes. I wear glasses too, since I'm nearsighted.

Oh, right. I quickly stopped, pulled my glasses out of my bag, and pulled my contact lenses out, putting the glasses on.

As for what just happened...

I'm going to sound like a huge asshole now, but in a nutshell, I'm currently the cities most wanted criminal. You could even call me a super villain. My codename is Streak, because wherever I go, I leave a streak of blood.

That's a metaphor by the way, I don't actually leave a streak of blood everywhere I go. I just tend to have messy killings. Look, I'm only 13, almost 14. I got a lot going on right now.

I finally made it back to the house, and by then it's 1am. I knocked on the door, expecting to see my twin sister answer it, but instead I see my cousin, Hunter Terrilynn. He takes after his mother more than his dad, with dirt brown hair and tanner skin without freckles. He's about my height, and has the same bright blue eyes as me and my sister.

"Ellie? What are you doing out so late?" He asked, his eyes turning an ocean blue, showing concern. The thing about our eyes, is they change different shades of blue to match how we feel.

"Oh, um... I couldn't sleep, so I went for a walk." I lied, my eye turned a light shade of pale blue, showing I was nervous as I averted my gaze. He moved to the side so I could come in, and I saw Pearl asleep on the couch. She must have fallen asleep waiting for me. That made me feel guilty. I didn't want to wake her, so I sat down on the floor in front of her, dropping my bag down.

"What are you doing up?" I asked Hunter, looking up at him.

"I couldn't sleep either, I came down to get some water and found her asleep on the couch..." he replied, running the back of his neck nervously, "anyway, we have school tomorrow, so let's get some rest."

I nodded, and he went back to his room. I sighed, shouldering my bag again, and carefully picking up my sister, and going to our room. I laid her on her bed, and threw the blanket over her, before climbing into my own bed on the other side of the room. I fell asleep quickly.

The next morning I woke up to my sister shaking me.

Let me explain what my sister is like, before you meet her.

Her name is Pearl Aikala Terrilynn. She has the same bleach blonde hair, blue colour changing eyes, and freckles. She has purple glasses, and her hair is longer, down to her waist, and she's a lot taller than me. Like, 9 inches taller than me.

Despite our similarities, we have very different personalities. I'm loud and outgoing, super friendly and not afraid of talking to strangers, but I'm not very good at following rules.

Pearl is quiet, smart, and barely talks to anyone besides me or Hunter, and her friend Isabelle. She prefers to do things on her own, instead of grouping up, and she's actually really shy. Despite that, she's definitely not afraid to yell at me for doing something wrong, or hit me, or both. She loves me though, and I love her.

"Ellie, come on. It's Friday, we have school." She said, shaking me gently, her eyes wide and tired.

"Ugh... yeah yeah, I'm up, I'm up.." I grumbled, sitting up, and she laughed gently.

"Come on, we have to get ready. I washed your clothes by the way," she smiled, stepping back and going to her dresser, changing out of her pajamas and into the school uniform, grabbing her glasses and putting them on. I had fallen asleep in my clothes so, I sighed, and changed into the uniform, cleaning my glasses.

"Thanks Sis," I smiled at her, picking up my bag. She smiled back, and we went downstairs.

Our school uniform is... designed to stop people from staring at each other. It's tight fitting, but the girl's skirt is knee length, and we have to wear shorts underneath it. The top is the same for both genders though, a white button up shirt with a black blouse overtop. The only difference is the girl's wear a red bow, and the guys wear a tie red tie. The boy wear dark red dress pants, and the girls have dark red knee length skirts. It represents our school colours, black and red, and like I mentioned before, girls have to wear shorts underneath the skirt. The colours for that don't matter though.

Once we were dressed, we went into the bathroom, where Hunter was brushing his hair. Pearl grabbed her hairbrush and started brushing her own, while I cleaned my glasses. Then I brushed my own hair.

"Morning girls..." Hunter yawned.

"Morning Hunter," I replied tiredly.

"Good morning," Pearl said quietly. The three of us finished in the bathroom, and went downstairs.

"Good morning you three!" Aunty Kara smiled at us, waving from the kitchen.

"Morning Mom..." Hunter yawned again, going to hug her in the kitchen.

"Morning Aunty," Pearl and I chorused, as we went to the living room to finish packing our backpacks.

"Morning," Uncle Fred grunted to us, Fred is actually short for Frederick, but he doesn't like being called by his full name, kind of like how I don't like being called Ellianna.

"Ellie, your bow is crooked," Pearl pointed out to me, and I frowned, looking down at it.

"Oh, thanks," I replied, straightening it. I normally wouldn't care, but our school is really big on looking professional and stuff like that, so I would get in trouble otherwise.

"Breakfast is ready!" Aunty called, and we all gathered at the table to eat. She had made bacon and eggs, probably my favourite breakfast.

After everything was eaten, and our bags were packed, we said goodbye and ran to the bus stop.
