It All Comes Down To This
I got up in a rush and ran to put my safety gear on. The shooting had started and I saw many men running towards our tents and shooting their way inside. I grabbed the gun lying on the table and ran out of the tent as fast as I could. I sprinted towards a big rock to hide from my foes. I charged my gun, and looked over the rock. They had burned down the tents and destroyed everything in their passage. I could see my partners shooting the enemy and killing a few of them. I saw Rick trying to find some place safe, but failed when he got shot in the leg and then in the back. I took a deep breath, and ran while shooting at the enemy. The war lasted many hours, but they kept having more and more men coming.
I knew we were being outnumbered. I saw a man running towards me with his gun pointed at me and ready to fire. I took mine, and pointed it straight at him. One shot, and he was down. For a minute, everything stood still. I looked at my gun and then back at the dead man's body. It was the first time I'd killed a man so cold blooded. I was shocked by how easy it had been to just kill someone. The revenge that came over me was just so overwhelming. We had just lost so many of our soldiers in the battle.
I started trotting back to my safety rock. Before I got back, I heard a distant voice yelling my name.
"Noah! Noah! Help me!" It was Mikey's voice. I looked back and saw him laying on the ground and getting hit by a big guy wearing knuckle braces which I could tell he was using, by the amount of blood being spilled. He was trying to protect himself using his arm, but the guy was so much stronger.
"Hold on Mikey!" I yelled. I tried to aim at the brute with my gun, but realized he was too far for me to kill. The guy suddenly looked up and saw me so he tried to get his gun, but saw it wasn't anywhere near him. He looked at me with my gun in my hands and a glimpse of panic crossed his expression. He let go of Mickey who got up and ran towards me. That man didn't deserve to stay alive after what he had just done to my friend. I decided to end this battle once and for all, seeing that most of the men were now running to kill. I threw a grenade at the man and it was too late when I saw Mickey running back towards the son of a bitch.
"No Mickey! Run away! Not there!" But it was too late. It all happened so fast and there was nothing I could do to prevent it. The grenade blew up and all I saw, were the two bodies being thrown away from ground and then a deafening silence. It was over. No more men were coming to kill us. I fell on my knees. I couldn't breathe. My hands came to my face and I started panting. Other soldiers, that were on my team, came out of their hiding places to come up to me. They were talking to me, but I kept staring at the opened space in front of me, hearing nothing. It was dead silent. I finally looked up at them and saw them staring down at me.
I finally got back on my feet after a long time. A helicopter had arrived and been waiting behind the trees. Everyone was silent on the way home, as if they were too afraid to speak and say something wrong. In these moments nothing would have been right anyways. My heart was beating out of my chest and my breathing was heavy. I was the only one who knew that I had just killed one of our own, and he has been my friend.
We landed in BC a 2 days later. My wife waved as soon as she saw me through the glass window, but I couldn't bring a smile on my face as I saw her. I felt too numb to be joyful. My expression stayed the same as in the past few days; hard and blank. She slowly stopped waving when she saw me coming closer.
