"But why..." I mumble to myself, "just because they look-alike?"

Sonic nods, "Pretty much, it's sad really." The azure hedgehog stood up, pulling me to my feet. "I'm sorry if I ruined your birthday, I just wanted to warn you... I didn't want something to happen and you be more crushed because of it."

I sigh, shaking my head, "It's fine Sonic, don't be sorry. Thanks for telling me." Its not like he ruined it all, although my heart broke a little hearing that my new friend had tried to kill Silver. He seemed so kind when I met him, goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover.

Sonic pulled me into a hug, "No need to sweat over it, we'll just need to keep an eye on him." I hug him back, taking in his warm scent. Wow... That totally wasn't creepy. Even still I smile a little, feeling a little better about this. I'll be careful but that doesn't mean I won't try to be his friend.

After a few moments we pull away, Sonic shifted on his feet, nervous about something. "Um... Zara, I uh... I-I have a gift for you..."

"A gift?" I cocked my head to the side, "You didn't have to get me anything."

He took out a small deep green box, handing it to me. "I hope you like it..." I can swear seeing a small blush on his cheeks, but maybe I'm just seeing things. I open the box and gasp.
Inside was a silver ring with a sapphire gem in the shape of a heart.
"Oh... Sonic.." I cover my mouth, feeling tears sting my eyes.
"It's a promise ring." Sonic rubbed the back of his neck, laughing nervously.
"Promise ring, for what?" I looked up at him.
Sonic took the ring and slipped it onto my finger. "I promise to protect you, and I won't ever leave your side."
I look at the ring, then back up at the handsome hedgehog, feeling my face heating up. "You don't have to protect me..." I look back down.
Sonic smiled, "Maybe not, but I want to."
He moved a little closer. My heart skipped as he pulled me into a warm hug. Sonic said something, but I couldn't hear it over the sound of my heart.
When I looked up, our lips met.
