Fireflies (Short Story)
((You can listen to it with the song or not, doesn't matter.))
Creeping through the hallways, Alex headed towards her big brother's room. She pushed the door open just a crack, poking her head inside. Her small body shook, the images from the nightmare still fresh in her mind.
"A-Alfie?" her quiet voice broke the silence, making her scare herself.
Alfred stirred awake, turning to face Alex. His eyes opened.
"Alex?" He asked groggily, sitting up and rubbing the tired out of her eyes.
Alex bolted over to her brother, tackling him into a hug. Alfred blinked in surprise before hugging back, rubbing her back to help call her. He looked down at her, even though they were kids, Alfred was still a head taller than her. Little did they know at the time, but the height difference would only grow over time.
Alex's violet eyes displayed fear, which lead Alfred to the conclusion that she had a nightmare. Suddenly, he got an idea, he pushed open the window next to his bed and looked at his sister.
"Ladies first." Alfred told his sister, having picked up a bit of his father's gentlemanly tendencies. "It's best we go this way, we won't wake up Daddy and Papa."
Alex tilted her head in confusion before understanding and crawling out the window. Alfred followed, though he ended up landing on his head.
"Are you okay, Big Brother?" Alex asked worriedly.
"I'm alright!" Alfred sprung to his feet, grinning at her.
He took her hand, using the other one to point.
"Look, fireflies."
Alex looked around, little yellow and green lights flicked on and off around them. It was defidentally lightning bugs. She giggled, her worries seeming to melt away.
Alfred's idea worked, he always knew how to cheer her up.
The two siblings spent the rest of the night chasing fireflies, giggling, and laughing.
