Better Place (Short Story)

Alex was having a good day. She had gotten up early and eaten breakfast and was now out on a walk. But... she never could have a simple day, could she? Her simple morning was ruined when she saw someone. Though, it wasn't a living someone, though it technically wasn't a dead someone. It was someone undead. A spirit.

He looked like a broken man. She immediately knew how he died when she noticed he was wearing a military uniform with a bloodstain on the chest. She smiled sadly and walked over to him, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Bonjour." She said softly, making him jump slightly.

"Y-You can see me...?" He asked quietly as he stared at her.

Alex nods with a kind smile. "Oui. I can. I'm Alex Bonnefoy, and you are?"

"Kevin. Kevin Hardnec."

"Well Kevin, may I ask what's keeping you stuck on this hell while you should be up in heaven?" Alex asked the man.

"Well... I wanted to see my wife one last time... even if she cant see me..." Kevin sighed, "I know its a stupid reason to stay but she was..."

"Your one and only." Alex finished for him, nodding a little to herself. She then gave a small smile, "Well Kevin, your in luck. I help people like you all the time. And I'm going to make sure you can see your wife again. One last time."

"R-Really? But... she moved to a different city..." Kevin sighed

"Where did she move?" Alex questioned.

"New Orleans."

Alex grinned, "Mon ami, your in luck." She said, grabbing his arm. She then closed her eyes and focused on her home city. When she opened her eyes, they were there ((I read a head canon where they can transport anywhere in the place they represent so... yea.))

"H-How did you...!?"

Alex only smiled, "I have many gifts Mr. Hardnec. Now, back to the search, what's your wives name?"

"Julia Hardnec." He replied.

Alex bit her lip, she recalled a grave at the cemetery with that same name... She finally asked:

"What year was she born?"

"1985." he answered, "Why?"

Alex sighed, leading him to the cemetery. When they got there, she pointed to the grave stone with Julia's name on it.

"She's up in heaven, waiting for you." She told the former soldier, "Go. You can leave now and have a happy after life now. She will be able to see you, you will be able to see her."

Kevin looked down, "Wh-what if I go to Hell though?" he asked quietly

The black haired girl chuckled, "Mr. Hardnec, a man such as yourself, who was kept tethered to the mortal word for such a reason, doesn't go to Hell. Trust me."

Kevin only nodded, closing his eyes and fading. Actually fading this time. Once he was gone, Alex wiped a tear off her cheek. The hardest part of he job was always saying goodbye to those she helped. But she knew helping them was the right thing to do.
