Chapter 6: A Strange New Friend

The carriage bumped against the road as you arrived closer to the estate in the city. Ciel had received a request from the queen and needed to leave the mansion for some time. Under his request, you went with him, while Finny, Mey-Rin, and Bard would stay behind and take care of the Phantomhive Estate. Finally, the home came into view, and you looked out of the carriage's window towards the orange/brown building. Ciel left the carriage first, helping you get off.

" There are too many people in London. " Ciel complained while walking up the steps.

" From the country manor house to the London townhouse. It's traditional for the nobility to move en masse for the season. " Sebastian said, opening the door to the estate.

You walked in and followed Ciel up the stairs of the estate. The townhouse was beautiful and was decorated in light, calming colors.

" The season, eh? Honestly, these cretins have too much free time."

" Getting away from the estate occasionally might provide a nice change of pace. For one thing those four aren't here."

You knew Sebastian was referencing the servants at Ciel's estate. You felt bad for them because they were crying at your departure when you three left, all except Bard.

" We should be able to spend some quiet time, my lord. "

   " Quiet time, eh? "

Once at the top of the steps, Sebastian opened the door to a room meant to rest, with couches and a fireplace. However, when Sebastian opened the door, the room was in disarray. There were books, blankets, and teacups thrown everywhere. Madam Red was in the room searching through one of the cabinets of books while Lau was fooling around with a vase.

" For goodness's sake! Wherever do they keep the tea in this place? " Madam Red said, pulling another book from the dresser.

   " I can't find it either. "

" You spoke to soon Sebastian. " You whispered to the butler.

" It seems I have. " He whispered back.

" Madam Red?! Lau?! What are you doing here?! " Ciel yelled at the two.

" Goodness, you're early. " Madam Red said as Grell appeared, raising his head from the couch.

" You coming here can mean only one thing. " Lau said mischievously.

" The Queen's guard dog is making a move. " Madam Red finished for Lau.

Ciel didn't say anything and motioned with his hand for everyone to follow him. Sebastian opened another door into another room, and everyone filed into the room. However, before entering the room, Ciel placed a hand on your shoulder, stopping you from entering the room.

   " Yes? "

" I must ask you to go downstairs. You are not involved in this matter. "

   " You. . .Don't you want my involvement? "

" I do not require your assistance in this case, so please do not attempt to come into the room. "

" It's about the prostitutes being murdered. "

" Yes, it is, but even still, you will not be involved. "

Ciel turned and walked into the room, shutting the door behind himself. You stood at the doors, feeling a little hurt, but you didn't try and plead for your case as you were not on your estate.

" That was a little harsh, don't you think. " You heard Madam Red ask.

" That does not matter. "

You turned and walked down the steps in a slump. As you walked down the steps, Sebastian walked up the stairs with a pear and blackberry cornmeal cake.

" My lady, has my master not allowed you to enter the discussion? "

" No, he claims he does not need me. "

Sebastian glanced at your form before setting the plate with the cake down on a pedestal that rested at the corner, where the rails going up the stairs connected. He sliced a piece of the cake and set it on one of the plates.

" You have a pear and blackberry cornmeal cake, my lady. Please enjoy. "

" Thank you, Sebastian. " You said, taking the cake, looking at it softly.

" The townhouse is a beautiful building, isn't it? THe history behind it is riveting, and. . .we are not far from the city, if we must travel there. "

Your head snapped up to Sebastian, and he smiled down at you. You caught the hint and curtsied to him.

" Great idea Sebastian. Thank you! "

" I have said nothing. " Sebastian said, putting a gloved finger to his lips.

" Understood. " You said, copying his gesture.

You skipped down the steps with your cake and went to the kitchen to grab something to eat the dessert. Once you found something to eat the food with, you enjoyed your plate of cake. After scarfing the cake down, you went outside and started walking to the city. You knew about the case enough to know the killer was called 'Jack the Ripper.' Whoever the killer was had caught the attention of Scotland Yard, and now the queen has asked for Ciel to take care of the case. Many prostitutes had been killed over the past few nights. You heard all about the killings in the newspapers, and it nerved you. You walked through the city, looking at the people running around. One boy bumped into you, and you looked down to see it was the same boy you had given money to.

   " Oh, hello, Ms. Y/n! "

" Hello! How are you doing? " You asked, crouching to his level.

" I'm doing well! That bread lasted for a week, and a few days. I'm a paper boy now, and I'm earning enough money to buy food for my brother and I. "

" That's good. You're doing well. How is your brother doing? "

" He is well, he's decided to work for a shoemaker, and earn more money that way. "

" You boys are doing good! Keep up the good work alright? "

   " You got it! "

You boy ran off to sell more papers, and you smiled at his small form. You continued to walk until you appeared at a shop that seemed a little odd, to be in the city. There was a casket outside, with two graves. The sign at the top of the building read, 'Undertaker.' You were intrigued and stepped inside the shop. It was dark, but the light outside streamed through the windows, lighting up the building. In the center of the room, there were coffins, shelves along the far wall, and skeletons standing or lying along the room. A casket was lying on a table with two coffins lying on the ground.

" Well, hello, deary. I've never seen someone like you around, or in my shop. You don't seem close to death, oh no, so you are here out of curiosity, correct? "

You looked around for the voice that spoke. You couldn't find the owner until you looked towards one of the coffins leaning against the wall. The door slid off, and the bottom part hit the floor. Inside the casket, a man stood, smiling. His hair was white and long, yet he didn't look old. He wore a black gown, with a grey shawl around his waist and thrown over his left shoulder. The black hat on the top of his head seemed longer, and the longer it was, the thinner it got. His grey bangs covered his eyes, and you couldn't see his eyes, but you could see a scar travel from one corner of his face to hide underneath the bangs. There was another scar around his neck, too, and you wondered how many other scars he had. His fingernails were long and black, while his skin was fair, even paler so. Sandlers adorned the man's feet, and he stepped out of the coffin. His black sleeves covered his hands, and his hand was hidden behind the sleeve when he pointed towards you.

   " Correct, am I? "

" You are. Who might you be? "

" Why you cannot see? There is a sign outside. " The man said, standing up, straight as an arrow.

" Oh, so you're name is Undertaker. I thought that was the name of the shop or something. "

" Do I get the privilege to measure you for one of my caskets? " Undertaker asked, circling you like a vulture.

His voice would change its range every so often. At one point, it would be higher, and then it would be a normal pitch or possibly lower.

" Umm, no. I was walking around the city when I saw this little place. I thought I would come in, and look around. "

" Oh? What a curious thing you are. You may stay deary, only if you provide me with some compensation. "

" How much? " You asked, the man, a little afraid of his price.

" Laughter! Give me the joy of laughter! " Undertaker cheered as he crouched to the floor and grabbed the bottom of your dress.

You looked down at the odd man, confused, but you provided him with a joke. The people outside the shop looked at the building questioningly as they heard the loud laughter from within the shop. Undertaker was rolling on his back, clutching his sides, as he laughed. You smiled at the odd man. He was strange, but you enjoyed his oddness. Finally, Undertaker pulled himself onto one of the coffins and sat down.

" Come sit down, deary. "

You walked towards the coffin and sat down beside Undertaker.

" So, you prepare bodies for burial, or is there more? "

" I bury them, too, unless the family wants to do that themselves. What is your name? "

   " Y/n. "

" You live with the queen's guard dog as of now, ain't that right? "

" Has word traveled around about that? I don't see anything wrong with it. " You said, looking down at the floor.

" Oh, it is not improper, but to some, it is. Ah, the way humans think, are beyond me. I simply just like to laugh. "

" You speak as if you are not human. Why? "

The Undertaker's smile seemed to widen by your question, and he placed his hand on the top of your head. You turned your head to look at him, and he looked down at you. There was a slight green glint in his eyes, but you believed you imagined things since you could not see his eyes.

" That, deary, is for you to figure out later. It seems we have a couple more guests coming into the shop. "

The door to Undertaker's shop opened, and you looked over to see Ciel at the door's opening, with Sebastian, Lau, and Madam Red behind him.

" I thought you'd drop by before long. Welcome, my lord. Is today the day you'll condescend to enter one of my special coffins? " Undertaker asked, standing up and revealing your sitting spot.

" Certainly not. Today I--Y/n?! What are you doing here? " Ciel shouted, looking at your figure.

You stood up from the coffin and walked closer to your companion.

   " I was just--"

Hands placed themselves on your shoulders, and when you turned your head to look, you recognized Undertaker's hands. Undertaker leaned down to your height and rested his face close to yours as he spoke.

" This little, deary, was wandering around, and came into my shop. Curiosity can get the best of us, don't you think my lord? "

Ciel's face turned into a glare as he looked at Undertaker. Undertaker snickered and stood to his full height but kept his hands on your shoulders.

" I know what you're here for. That wasn't the type of customer fit for respectable people. I'll have you know; I made her beautiful. "

" I want to hear about it. "

" Ah, I see, so the funeral parlor is your cover business. How much is the info? " Lau asked, undertaker.

Undertaker didn't seem too interested in Lau until he asked about payment. He was in front of Lau, leaning over the man, while Lau looked concerned by the speed, Undertaker had reached him.

" I have no desire for any of the Queen's coins! "

You felt someone tug on your wrist and pull you from your spot. You looked down and saw Ciel's gloved hand pull you closer to him. Ciel pulled you to stand beside him, feeling more comfortable that you were near him again. His glare on Undertaker lessened.

" The joy of laughter is the only payment I need! " He shouted, hugging himself and slightly drooling.

Undertaker's small hug for himself made your smile a bit wider, and you covered your smile with your hand.

" Leave it to me. " Lau said, stepping forward.

" Behold the genius of the man that Shanghai called the Sleeping Tiger of New Year's Parties! Every Calendar's days are numbered. "

No one seemed to laugh at his calendar joke. Undertaker didn't seem impressed and slapped a red 'x' made of tape over his mouth.

" If I must. . ." Madam Red said, stepping forward to present herself.

" Madam Red, the belle of fashionable society, will tell you her special story! So, his ***** completely flaccid and ******, but when-- "

Your ears were covered by Ciel, while Sebastian covered Ciel's ears. Madam Red continued to talk, and Undertaker still did not look like he would laugh. Undertaker, at one point, grabbed more red tape and made an 'x' slapping it over Madam Red's mouth. Ciel finally let go of your ears but rested his hands on your shoulders.

" Now, that I may finish my little talk. I have already been provided with my payment. " Undertaker said.

Madam Red and Lau seemed to jump in their spots and glare at Undertaker. Ciel's raised his eyebrow at Undertaker, and he flinched, pulling your back against his chest when Undertaker pointed a finger at you.

" My deary here provided the payment moments ago. "

" But I thought that was for me too stay here? "

" I'll allow it since you are new to the situation. "

Undertaker went towards a small area and pulled out a container of tea bags. He poured water for everyone in cups and handed them a tea bag, but the cups were not cups at all. They were measuring cups. You sat beside Ciel as Undertaker started to speak.

" These days I often get customers who are incomplete. "

   " Incomplete? "

" Yes, incomplete. . .the wombs are missing. Though the killer makes quite a violent splatter, the wombs themselves are neatly cut out. "

" It was done on a public road, even if it was not a high-traffic one. . .Wouldn't such an excision have been difficult for an amateur, particularly in the middle of the night? " Sebastian asked.

   " You're a sharp one, butler. That's my opinion as well. "

Undertaker walked towards Ciel and stood behind him, putting his left hand around his neck.

" First, the Ripper slashes their throats with a sharp hand weapon. "

Undertaker's right hand moved to Ciel's abdomen and gestured to it.

" Then cuts this part open. . .and takes what's precious to them. "

Undertaker stood up and poked Ciel's cheek.

" I'm sure there will be others killed. People like that don't stop until someone stops them. Can you do it, o villainous noble Lord Phantomhive? "

" On the honor of my family crest, I eliminate anyone who defiles the queen's garden, without exception and by any means necessary. "

Undertaker chuckled at Ciel's words and said there was nothing more for him to tell Ciel. Sebastian suggested we depart from the shop, and everyone agreed. However, before you could entirely leave the shop, Undertaker grabbed your shoulder and brought you back in.

" Do come to visit again, deary. "

   " I will, Undertaker. "

" And be safe, you never know when the Ripper will come after young ladies who are not prostitutes. " Undertaker warned.

You nodded and stepped outside, where Ciel was waiting for you. After entering the carriage and getting over Sebastian's surprise leave out of the moving cart, you were ready to rest. At this point, you had gotten used to Sebastian's strange behavior and lightning-quick reflexes. You laughed at Madam Red's shocked face when she saw him back at the townhouse, with a list full of people he had narrowed down to one person.
