Chapter 5: In The Garden

You sat down in the chair Sebastian pulled out for you. Ciel sat to your right at the head of the table while the others waited behind Sebastian.

   " Noooooo! "

You looked towards the doors leading to the hallway, hearing Grell scream. Before you could investigate the matter, the doors were thrown open, by Grell, on top of a cart full of tea, sugar, and milk. The cart sped into the room and crashed into Finny. Grell fell off the cart that now laid sideways, and teacups shattered, with tea spilling on the light blue carpet. Some of the scalding coffee spilled on Finny's shirt.

" Hot! Hot, hot hot! "

Finny held his shirt from touching his skin so that the hot tea wouldn't burn him anymore. Grell stood up and ran towards Finny, crouching in front of the gardener.

" I--I'm so sorry! I'll wipe you off right away! "

You shook your head at Grell's clumsiness and starving at your food. You raised your fork to start eating, but the fork only hit the wooden table when you reached for your plate. You looked towards where the table cloth had been pulled and saw that Grell had removed the table cloth in an attempt to get a napkin. Some of the dishes shattered against the floor, while the other china tipped over. Your plate was tipped over, and your food spilled onto the white table cloth. You felt imaginary tears running down your face from not eating the gorgeous-looking food. Ciel only sighed and placed his fingers on his forehead.

" Young master, why did you take in this useless bum? " Bard whispered between you and Ciel.

" Are you one to talk? I miscalculated. I thought the only one inconvenienced would be Sebastian, and I wouldn't suffer any harm. . ."

Finny, Mey-Rin, and Bard glared down at Grell as he apologized for his mistakes.

" I'm terribly sorry for causing you all such trouble. . .I know! I will die once and for all. I'll atone with my death! " Grell shouted, pulling out a long knife and pointing the blade at his throat.

You felt your body jump slightly, not expecting Grell to try and kill himself.

" Hey, don't do anythin' rash! " Bard yelled.

" Wh--When did he get that knife? " Mey-Rin questioned.

Sebastian left Ciel's side and walked up to Grell, placing a hand on his shoulder.

" No need for you to die. If blood sprays everywhere, the room will be that much harder to clean. "

Grell lowered the knife, and you saw his eyes glimmer.

   " Sebastian, you're so kind. . ."

' Kind!? You almost took your life, and Sebastian was only worried about cleaning your blood, instead of helping you! '

Sebastian pulled the rest of the table cloth off and placed a fresh one on the table. He prepared another cup of tea with china that had not broken yet, and served the tea to Ciel and then you. You took a sip of the warm tea, still concerned over Grell's well-being.

" Young master it's almost time. I have a carriage waiting out front. "

   " Right. "

" All right, everyone, I'll leave the cleaning up to you. Grell, please just sit and rest so that you don't cause unnecessary trouble. If you should decide to rest eternally, I ask that you please do so outside. "

   " Sebastian. . .You're so kind. . . "

' Grell, I need to teach you what kindness means! ' You shouted in your head.

Ciel stood up from his chair, and Sebastian walked up to him with his blue coat and black top hat.

" Y/n will you be accompanying me into town? " Ciel asked, slipping on his coat and hat.

" Umm, sure. . ." You said not sure.

" Then, let us go. "

You nodded and stood up from the table, following Ciel to the carriage outside. Sebastian opened the door for you, and you stepped in first. Ciel entered the carriage after you, and together, you both left the Phantomhive estate. You worried over Grell but dismissed your thoughts when Ciel spoke to you.

" How are you enjoying your stay, Y/n? "

You turned your head from looking out of the window towards Ciel.

" I am enjoying my stay. Your home is very lively, livelier than my own. "

" You are an only child, I forgot. "

" Yes, and it's usually, lonely at my home, without my mother or father there. THe staff are wonderful, but it still feels lonely from time to time. "

   " Right. . ."

The conversation seemed to die, but you had a few questions to ask your old friend.

" Ciel, how come we stopped seeing each other? One day my father said that I would not be able to travel to your estate anymore, and then the fire occurred. After that, I never saw you again. "

Ciel's eyes glanced at yours and became sorrowful. Ciel folded his hands in his lap, and his eyes turned to look out of the window.

" I have no recollection of why it had to be that way. But it should not hold us back from rekindling the relationship we had, when we were younger. "

" I agree, but it feels like you're hiding something from me. Like something weird has happened, and you're hiding it. "

Ciel slowly smirked at your statement. You turned his head towards you, with the smirk still plastered on his face.

   " I have no idea, what you're talking about, Y/n. "

The city came into view, and you looked at the different shops you passed by. Each one is filled with various items being sold. Finally, the carriage stopped, and Sebastian opened the door to the carriage. You stepped out first and walked down the cobblestone walkways, following Ciel. A large building came into view, and when you stepped inside, there were more shops and stores. Ciel walked towards a shop where his cane was reconstructed after Finny had broken it.

" I'll wait out here. " You told Ciel.

Ciel nodded and walked into the shop while you waited outside. You looked at the people walking around, observing them. Mothers walked around with their children shopping while gentlemen looked for new suits or metal pieces. You noticed a few small children running by, smiling as they ran. You enjoyed seeing the kids run by, but a young boy ran by looking frantic when they passed you. As he ran, he had a large loaf of bread in his arms.

" Get back here, you thief! "

A baker ran after the young boy with a rolling pin. The boy bumped into you and fell on his back, still clutching the loaf of bread. The boy looked up at you, a little desperate. You helped the boy up, but you stopped him from running away.

" Just do as I do. " You said to the young boy.

The baker ran towards you and stopped running when he was in front of you. His breathing was ragged, and he crouched down on his knees, taking deep breaths before standing up.

" Thank ya' miss, for catching the little runt. I'll take him back, and give him a proper punishment. "

" I'm sorry sir. because this is my younger brother. I've been looking for him everywhere. I forgot to give him the money to pay for the loaf. He's a very shy person, and he'll usually try to avoid conversation as quickly as possible. He must have also realized when he didn't have the money, and had a small anxiety attack. You see our parents are very strict, on him. So, he stole the loaf on instinct. Here let me pay for it. "

You pulled a small pouch out of your dress pocket and handed the bag to the baker. The baker raised an eyebrow at you. Then, he opened the pouch with a  finger and looked at the money inside. The baker finally sighed and connected eyes with you.

" Alright, but don't let him keep stealing on impulse young lady. "

The baker walked away, taking his rolling pin with him. You turned towards the young boy and crouched in front of him. He held the bread closer to himself and looked shy at the ground.

   " Thank you, miss. . . "

" Don't thank me, but tell me why did you steal the bread? "

" My brother and I were hungry. We didn't have enough money, to buy any food. "

The boy's light brown eyes were ashamed as they looked at the floor. He shuffled on his feet while his long brown hair swayed with him. You sighed and grabbed another pouch of coins. You always carried around two pouches of money. You would spend one that you would have as backup in case your first pouch couldn't fit any more coins. You handed the pouch to the little boy, who now looked at you with wide eyes.

" Ration that big loaf with your brother, it'll last a little longer. Then use this money to help you survive.  A boy your age can at least get a small job. Use this money to clean up. "

" Thank you miss! Who are you? I want to repay you! "

" Don't worry about repaying me. But if you ever need anything ask around for where Y/n of the L/n household lives. And you'll find me. Now run along. "

The boy nodded and ran off with the large bread loaf. You stood up from the ground and watched the young boy run away. Ciel walked out of the shop with his new cane in hand.

" What was all of the commotion going on out here? " He asked, looking at you.

" It was just a young boy running from the baker. It's nothing to worry about. "

Ciel raised an eyebrow at you, but you started walking to leave the building. Ciel followed you back to the carriage, and the ride to the estate was calming. It was quiet between you both, and you gazed out of the window at the fields you passed. When you got closer to the Phantomhive manor, you noticed that the bushes and trees were trimmed a little weirdly.

   " Umm, Ciel? "

   " Yes, Y/n? "

" You might want to look at your shrubbery. " You said, pointing outside the carriage window.

Ciel looked out of the window at what you were pointing at, and his eye widened. All of the greenery around the estate was cut in the shape of skull heads.

" It must have been Grell. " You said.

" That damn butler. . ." Ciel cursed, placing his hand over his face.

" I'm sure it can be fixed. It is trees and shrubs, after all, they can be trimmed down again. "

Ciel sighed and nodded his head, agreeing with you. You yawned, feeling a little tired, and Ciel noticed your yawn.

" When we get inside, let's have some tea, and reminisce about old times. There are somethings I don't remember quite well. Then you should rest. "

" Sounds wonderful. I remember a lot of things we did when we were young. Mostly we explored, the mansion, playing games. "

Ciel slightly smiled, thinking about the good memories from his past. Of course, there were few good memories that Ciel remembered, but the best ones were in his youth.

" Yes, I remember. . .you had run outside, into the garden, and you couldn't find your way out. We were fairly young, almost a toddler. We couldn't find you until dinner time when you were crying. "

" In my defense, I was small and your garden was massive. It still is massive, and I could still get lost in it. "

Ciel chuckled at your words, and a small smile played on his face. Yes, he had a lot of great memories of your small adventures. Ciel felt comfortable, and he felt a slight warmth in his chest thinking about your shared past; even the bad memories couldn't break the smile on his face. The carriage had stopped in front of the doors to his manor, and Ciel exited the carriage first this time, holding his hand out towards you. You took his hand and stepped out of the carriage. His gloved hand held yours and helped you out of the carriage. A small smile still sat on his face.

" I'll prepare your tea right away. "

" Shall we have tea in the garden? " Ciel asked, looking towards you.

" Do you want me to get lost? " You asked with your smile.

Ciel chuckled again, raising his hand and holding the cane to his mouth to try and hide the smile. Sebastian opened the door, but the mansion was completely different when you looked inside. The color scheme was brighter and white, and gold was painted on the walls. Pink hearts decorated the staircase, and there were ribbons everywhere. There was also lots of glitter left behind by the culprit.

   " My mansion. . . "

" What in the world happened? " Sebastian asked.

   " Sebastian! "

Finny, Bard, and Mey-Rin ran out of one of the rooms and towards Sebastian. Ciel stepped back, pulling you with him by your still interlocked hand, and watched the scene. The three servants gripped Sebastian's coat desperately. Finny had rabbit ears and gloves on his hands, while Bard had baby attire on.

" What on Earth happened? Or rather, why are you dressed like that? " Sebastian asked the three.

" Ask the crazy girl! "

" Crazy girl? " You questioned the three.

You jumped a little, feeling someone groan painfully from the room the trio had just run out of. You looked at Ciel, and he nodded at you, taking the lead. Sebastian followed behind you, While Ciel was in front of you. Ciel pushed the door open with his cane, and you peeked inside. Grell was handing from the ceiling in a noose.

" What are you doing? " Ciel yelled, stepping into the room, dragging you with him.

" As you can see, I'm on the verge of dying. "

Grell looked the same, except he had an orange bow on his head and around his neck.

' He looks better with the red bow. ' You thought.

" Get him down, Sebastian. "

   " Yes, my lord. "

   " Ciel! " A new high-pitched voice screamed.

You instinctively let go of Ciel's hand when a woman ran towards Ciel and pulled his head behind her neck. The woman wore an orange poofy dress with yellow accents. Her hair was in two pigtails curled from the top of her head.

   " Ciel, I missed you! "

   " Elizabeth! "

" Aw, you know I'm always telling you to call me 'Lizzie'! Oh, every time I see you, you're just so cute! " She yelled.

" Lady Elizabeth. " Sebastian greeted.

" Oh, Sebastian. Good afternoon. "

Unlike how Lizzie treated Ciel, she curtsied for Sebastian and maintained her composure.

" Oh, no, you took him down? "

" Yes, my lady. He mars the beauty of the room. "

" Aw, but I made such a lovely decoration out of him! "

   " Decoration? "

" Yes! Look, the salon is so cute now too, isn't it? "

   " My. . .mansion. . ." Ciel still groveled.

" Only cute things can exist in this mansion! "

' I better leave then. ' You thought, trying to sneak away.

Lizzie grabbed your arms before you could sneak away and turned you around. Her eyes sparkled as she looked at you, and you feared that she would dress you up as she had with Bard or Finny.

" And who are you? You're so pretty! "

" More importantly, Lizzie, what are you doing here? Where's Auntie? " Ciel asked, diverting her attention.

" I snuck away because I wanted to see you, Ciel! "

" Sn-Snuck away? What were you thinking? " Ciel shouted.

" Shush! None of that shouting from you right now! But who are you? " Lizzie questioned you.

" My name is Y/n. My father works for Ciel, and Ciel has offered me a home here while my father and mother are away. "

" Oh, how sweet of my betrothed. I always knew you were not always the grouchy type. " Lizzie said, looking towards Ciel.

' Ahhh, so she is his betrothed. They'll be married in the future, probably soon, considering we are seventeen. ' You thought.

" You're much too stunning not to dress up for the ball tonight. OH, we can have fun and dance around together in the main hall. " Lizzie screamed.

" What ball? " Ciel questioned.

" Oh, and I'll have to dress to the nines as well. Oh this is going to be so much fun! "

Lizzie took your hand in hers and practically started dragging you out of the room.

" Listen to me! " Ciel shouted.

But Ciel's efforts were futile, as Lizzie dragged you to a guest room, where she had all her props from decorating the mansion. Lizzie threw a dress at you and pushed you behind a thin paper wall.

" Get, changed and I'll do you hair! "

You looked at the dress and sighed. You realized you were not going to get out of the situation. You started to strip yourself of your clothes, and you slipped the dress on, surprisingly feeling comfortable in the softness of the fabric. The dress was a mixture of dark blue colors, and white. The dress met the floor, and you could walk smoothly in the dress. There was no corset or sleeves. The sleeves it did have rested a little under your shoulder, and they were a thin transparent material. There were star and moon patterns around the dress, and it was simple but elegant. After you changed, you stepped out, and Lizzie squealed at the dress.

" That dress is perfect on you! You look so adorable! "

   " Uh, thank you? "

" Now, let's do your hair and makeup and we will be all settled! "

You yawned as you walked to the open seat Lizzie patted. She pulled out makeup products when you sat down and started applying some to your face. Slowly you were falling asleep, and eventually, you didn't even realize when your eyes closed. You fell asleep while Lizzie did your makeup, but she didn't mind. She continued to do your makeup and then moved on to your hair while you slept. She decided to let you sleep a bit more when she was done, so she moved you to lay on the small vanity with your head in your arms. Lizzie then left you to sleep while she dressed everyone else. You slept peacefully as the sun set. You finally woke up and looked in the mirror, realizing you had fallen asleep. You stood from the vanity and left the room. You could hear a violin being played and the voice of an opera singer in the main hall. You followed the music until you reached the main hall. Sebastian was playing the violin while Grell was singing.

   ' He can sing!? '

After your initial shock, you walked into the open and went down the stairs. Mey-Rin was the first to greet you, while Finny danced with Tanaka, in a maid outfit, with cat ears and paws.

" You look lovely; yes, you do! " Mey-Rin said, approaching you.

" Thank you, Mey-Rin. I'm surprised Lizzie left you untouched. "

" It was a close call, but I am myself. "

" Good. Why are you not dancing? "

   " I don't know how, I don't. "

   " Oh, I see, that's completely understandable. "

You continued to talk with Mey-Rin, strengthening your bond with the maid while laughing about small things. You would glance over to the earl and his fiancee as they danced now and then. Their dancing was beautiful and elegant. Sometimes you would catch Ciel looking your way, but you didn't think much of it.

" Ello' ladies, might I still Y/n from ye, Mey-Rin? " Bard asked, approaching you and your new friend.

   " Why I certainly don't. "

Bard offered you his hand, and you placed yours in his. He quickly twirled you onto the dance floor and put his hand on your waist. Finny danced with Tanaka beside you and Bard.

" Didn't know the chief could dance. "

   " I know a thing or two. "

" You're going to need a hand or two to get you out of that dress. It looks tight. "

Lizzie had dressed Bard in a light red dress with a deep red wig. He still smoked a cigarette, though, and you were impressed about how long he could hold the cigarette in his mouth without it falling.

" It bloody well is tight. I can barely breathe in this thing. "

" Welcome to the way of wearing a dress. Rule number 1, you cannot be allowed to breathe. "

Bard laughed a little and twirled you. You danced a little longer before; Bard couldn't breathe any longer. You sat him down against the wall and decided to let him rest. You walked away from the main room and through the mansion. You wanted to get to the garden in the back. You found the back door and walked out, with the bright moon peering down at you. You felt calm and walked further into the garden. You found a bench and sat down, relaxing as the wind blew by. The moon was bright as it shined down on you.

   " Isn't it cold, out here? "

You turned your head and spotted Ciel walking towards you, still wearing the clothes Lizzie gave him.

" Not really. There's just a light breeze, nothing severe. Where's Lizzie? "

" Grell, is escourting her home. She fell asleep in the carriage. "

" Shouldn't you be getting rest as well? You seemed tired before Lizzie came to the estate. "

" I can ask the same question to you. "

" I slept, while Lizzie did my makeup and hair. It was a small nap, so I'm good to last for a while. "

Ciel walked closer and stood beside the bench. He looked up at the moon before standing before you, holding his hand out for you.

   " Care for a dance? "

" Sure. " You said, laughing.

You placed your hand in his and stood up from the bench. Ciel positioned himself as he did with Lizzie. Unlike his dance with Lizzie, this one was soft, with fewer twirls and more swaying. There was no music playing, but there didn't need any. Your laughter with the earl filled the air as you reminisced on old times, with his hand within yours, swaying under the moonlight.
