Chapter 36: Meeting Earl Trancy
It had been a long time, and you had never heard from Ciel again. You had heard the news that he went missing and could not be found, along with Sebastian. And you knew if Sebastian was gone, there was no hope in finding the man who had once proposed to you. After hearing the news, you were devastated, and you even went to the estate to check on everyone, and they all were depressed.
Your father's company and your mother's practice grew, and you became well known all over London. After your eighteenth birthday, you took over your father's company and management over all of the hospitals your mother had run. It was a lot, but you could keep up the work. Your parents had retired to an estate further in the countryside, and you owned your parent's estate. You had even made ties with the Trancy family and started some business with them, though you had never met anyone in the family.
Every week you would receive a marriage proposal, but you had never accepted any of them. You didn't think of marriage ever since Ciel had once proposed to you, but after he had been missing for months, you gave up on hoping he was alive.
" My Lady, there's another marriage proposal for you. "
" Is it from Viscount Druitt again? "
" Yes, it is. "
" That's the second one this week. You know what to do with it. "
" I will set it in the fireplace to burn. "
" Thanks Mary. Is there anything else going on? "
" The head of the Trancy family wishes to meet with you. He sent a letter requesting that you stay at the Trancy Manor and discuss the details of your next project. "
You turned toward Mary, shocked at the news she had brought you. For once, you would get to meet the head of the Trancy family. To see who you were working with this entire time. You asked Mary for the letter, which she handed to you. You read through the letter and found that your maid was right; the man had wanted to meet with you tonight over dinner.
" Well, send him a letter telling him I accept his invitation right away, and let's start preparing for an overnight stay. "
" How, long will you be over? "
" This letter said a guest room is prepared for me, and I will stay as long as I wish. Prepare three days' worth of clothes and two nights' worth of nightgowns. In case, this discussion seems to be longer than expected. I'm projecting it'll possibly be one day longer, but if anything changes I will send letter right away. "
" Yes, ma'am. "
Mary left your office to prepare you for travel. You looked outside toward the slowly falling sun and realized that you wouldn't get much more work done since the Trancy Manor was far from your estate. So you set aside your work and walked to your room, helping Mary pack your things. With two people working together, your stuff was packed in a few minutes.
" Please, keep watch of the estate. If anything happens notify me as soon as possible. "
" Don't worry, me, Lady. Things will be fine here. Just enjoy your time at the Trancy Manor. You haven't been out a lot, ever since Earl Phatonhive went missing. "
" I--"
" You haven't my Lady. Please don't deny it. "
You sighed and nodded. You stepped inside your carriage, and Mary waved you off as you headed toward the Trancy Manor. The trip was boring, but you had a few papers to work on. First, you completed a contract for a new hospital in your mother's name.
' All I have to do is mail this off, and the construction will start in a week. '
You set the contract papers away and closed your bag, but as soon as you did, you noticed Trancy Manor in the distance. The estate reminded you of a small castle; it was a long building with many floors. The rooftops were a light blue color, while the brick of the building was a cream color. There was no one outside the building to greet you, and when your coach stopped, you stood outside and watched your carriage drive away. Once the carriage was a small distance from the estate, you started walking up the steps to the castle.
' Alright, this is a little strange. Usually someone will meet you outside. '
You knocked on the door, and after lowering your hand, the door opened, and a butler stood behind the door. His suit was like any butler, but his bowtie had the Trancy signature. His black hair was short in the back but more extended in the front and pushed back from his face, showing his pale forehead. Glasses rested on his nose, and his gold eyes looked at you without emotion.
" Hello, Lady Y/n. Welcome to the Trancy Manor. I am Claude, the head butler. "
" Thank you. "
Claude opened the door wider, and you stepped inside with your bag. Claude bowed to you and raised his head.
" Please follow me to you roo--"
" Is she here!? "
You turned your head toward the staircase and saw the man who had interrupted Claude. The man had blonde hair swept to the side and bright blue eyes that reminded you of crystals. His skin was fair, complimenting his blonde hair. His attire was a purple and green combination. His jacket was purple, and touched his heels in a long coat. His pants were black and touched the tops of his black boots at his feet. He wore a white collared shirt with a green striped best on top of that. Finally, to accent the outfit, there was a big black bow around his neck and a red ring on his finger.
" Yes, your highness. She has just arrived. " Claude said, turning toward his master.
" Wonderful! "
The man skipped down the steps and toward you. The man was taller than you, but even with the slight height difference, he still bent his head close to your face.
" Hmm, you're a lot younger than what I thought. "
" Huh? "
" With how you talked in our letters about our previous projects and handlings, I thought you were an old woman, who had been working in the business for too long. "
' Is that supposed to be an insult or a compliment? '
" Anyway, enough dodling here. I'll show you to your room! "
The blonde took your free hand within his and started running up the stairs, then proceeded to run down the hallway. You gripped your bag tightly so you wouldn't drop anything but ran to keep up with the lively man.
" The names Alois Trancy by the way. There shall be none of that earl or Mr. Trancy stuff between you and me. Got it? " He said, still smiling back at you.
" Yeah. "
You noted that his tone shifted when he mentioned, 'Mr. Trancy' and 'earl.' It was as if he was making fun of those names before returning to his regular pitch. Alois stopped running once he found two doors in the hallway he was looking for. He let go of your hand briefly to open the door, but afterward, he retook your hand, leading you into the room.
" This is your room! Fabulous, isn't it? " He said with a high tone.
" Yes, it is. "
The room was styled to your liking; you had no idea how Alois managed to pick a room you enjoyed. You took your bag and placed it on the bed while Alois jumped on the bed, with his hands behind his head, still smiling.
" This bed certainly is comfortable. If it's more comfortable than mine, I might join you! "
' What is with this attitude? He sounds carefree and almost like he doesn't care for the world outside, but he makes his won rules. '
You hadn't said a word against or for the idea, but the lack of response, made Alois's smile turn downward.
" Don't you agree? " He asked with a malicious tone.
" Umm, it is your estate, so you may do what you wish, but isn't it frowned upon? When two unmarried people share the same bed? "
" Who cares if it's improper? I care about if it's more comfortable. "
With that, Alois jumped off your bed and walked to the door, opening them and stepping into the hallway.
" We will have dinner tonight, and tomorrow there is going to be a costume, ball. I hope you have something to wear, if you don't you might have to go in your underwear! "
He laughed as he slammed the doors shut, and you felt a little put off by the attitude. You decided to unpack later and send word to Mary to bring an extra outfit you could wear as a costume. With help from Claude, your letter was sent out immediately, and you were left on your lonesome in your bedroom.
When the sun had set, you knew dinner was approaching, but you didn't know where the dining room was in the large estate. Before you could go and start searching the estate, there was a light knock on your door.
" My Lady, I am here to escourt you to the dining hall. " A soft voice spoke.
It was a woman's voice who spoke to you on the other side of the door. You opened the door and peeked at the maid standing before you. Her hair was a lilac color, and it was long, almost reaching her feet. An eyepatch covered her left eye, but she smiled down at you, nonetheless.
" I haven't met you yet. Who might you be? " You asked.
" My name is Hannah, my Lady. "
" It's nice to meet you, Hannah. Please lead me to the dining room. "
Hannah stepped away from your door, and you stepped out of your room. Hannah started walking down the hallway, with you following after her. There was no word between you two, and there was silence. Then, finally, Hannah led you down a hallway and the stairs toward a big set of doors. She opened one of the doors for you, and you entered the room. Inside the room was a large dining table stretched across the room's length, and at the very end was Alois Trancy, looking bored as ever. But after hearing the door open and seeing you enter the room, he lit up like a Christmas Tree and smiled.
" Welcome! Come, come, come! "
Alois gestured to the seat beside his and pulled the chair away from the table so that you could sit down. Though you felt like something was off, you walked toward the chair and sat down, pulling the chair up to the table.
" Now, let's eat! "
Immediately, three butlers, who all looked identical, brought out food dishes and set them, along the table, each looking better than the last. You felt your mouth water, seeing all of the delectable food. Alois noticed your hunger and started to laugh at you, but you didn't pay him any mind.
" You look like a child that's been starved! But, you should wipe that look off your face. "
Alois placed a food dish in front of you, leaning his elbow on the table and his head on his hand.
" Because you'll be fed so well, I don't want to ever see that look on your face again. "
Throughout the dinner, there was no business talk like you had thought. Though his letter said you would discuss the details of your next project, nothing was really discussed. Instead, he had asked about your father and how he and your mother were in the countryside. He didn't seem to talk about himself, except if he was sharing his opinion on the matter. You had been interrupted a few times but didn't hold it against the man since you had just met. Once dinner had concluded, Alois stood from his seat smiling.
" That was delectable, wasn't it? "
" Yes, it was. I haven't had such a large meal in a while. "
" Hmm, and since you have been so good to me, I shall join you tonight in your bed! "
" What? "
" Yes! I've discovered that your bed is more comfortable than mine, but kicking you out of the room, wouldn't be the right thing to do, so we shall share tonight! "
You were utterly concerned, and before you could defend, he left the room to change into his nightly attire. With nothing else, you stood and went to your room, where a suitcase was lying in wait, with a letter on top. The letter had your name neatly written across the envelope. You didn't see anything strange about the envelope and picked it up, but after turning it over, you froze. There, on the end of the envelope sealing the letter, was the Phantomhive wax seal.
' It can't be. '
You quickly tore open the letter and started to read it, curious about what information was inscribed within it.
My Lady,
It has been some time, and I hope you are doing well.
I am glad to inform you that my master has returned to the Phantomhive Estate and is in excellent health. Unfortunately, however, he has no memory of what has happened or previous memory, except for his status, family, and distantly in the past yourself, my Lady. My Master, I'm afraid, does not remember your stay at the Phatomhive Manor, but I'm sure he shall remember with due time and help.
If there is time, please make your way to the Phatomhive Manor. It would be lovely to see you again, as I remember our encounters, and your presence might trigger my master's memories.
Sebastian Michaelis
Head Butler of the Phatomhive Family
You were gripping the letter tightly, with tears stinging your cheeks. You couldn't believe what the letter said.
' Ciel's back, but. . .he doesn't remember me, except from our younger years. '
You immediately wanted to head to the Phatomhive Manor, but you remembered that you had no means of getting over there. When looking at the date, the letter was sent a few days ago, only to arrive today, when Mary dropped off your costume. Slowly, you folded the envelope, set it in your bag, and sat on your bed, conflicted. You were upset, to the point tears poured down your cheeks, but your silent crying soon was hindered by the sound of a door opening.
" Now, what is this? "
Alois had entered your room to sleep in the same bed as he had promised. But he had not been prepared to see you crying at the edge of your bed. Instead, Alois walked into the room, shutting your door, and he stood in front of you, raising your head to look up at him.
" Why are you crying? "
His tone was not soft or showed kindness. Instead, his tone was one of annoyance.
" Someone I had known went missing a long time ago, and he has now been found, but he does not remember me. I was just informed that he cannot remember me, except for our younger years together as children. I am very sorry, you must see me like this, it just came as a shock. "
You wiped your tears away and continued to look up at Alois. Alois's face changed from uncaring to a regular frown. Finally, he sighed, climbed into your bed, and pulled you onto the sheets.
" Then, stop crying and go to sleep. Be happy he's back, at least, but do not bother him in the future. Remember you are at my estate. It wouldn't be kind of you to leave before we discuss this new project. "
Alois climbed under the covers and turned his back toward you, but you couldn't sleep. So, you lay in bed, restless, eventually falling to sleep, with one last tear slipping out of your eye.
Across the way, Ciel was sitting on his bed, looking around his room. As he left it, papers on his dresser for work and files were sitting on a small table in his room. Sitting on his dresser were pictures of his family before the fire and a photograph of a young woman he was standing with. Ciel looked at the picture more, but he wouldn't piece together who the woman was. He didn't seem to give himself grace, trying to figure out who she was.
" Master, you are not asleep. "
Sebastian entered the room with a candle in his hand that was brightly lit. Ciel didn't look toward his butler but kept his eyes on the picture.
" Sebastian, who is that woman in that photograph? "
Sebastian turned to look at the few pictures on the man's dresser. But, he knew which one Ciel was referring to.
" That is Lady F/n L/n, master. "
" Y/n? I haven't seen her in years, since we were children. How come we are standing together, as we are now, as we are older? "
" Young master, you have lost some of your memories, including the ones about the current Y/n. I have sent her a letter but have not heard anything back from her. I was hoping that she could trigger your memories, but I am not sure. "
" She must have been important if I look so happy in that photograph. Tell me everything we did together, you remember it all anyway. "
Sebastian nodded and regretfully walked to Ciel's desk, where a soft dark blue box sat. Ciel had wondered why there was a ring on his desk, especially since he knew the ring wasn't Lizzy's style, but with the mention of you and Sebastian grabbing the ring, he made the connection.
" I was going to marry her? "
" No, you simple bought the ring and asked for her family's blessing. But you disappeared, after that. There was no marriage or engagement. You had not even gifted her the ring. "
(Flashback)
Ciel was standing outside of a church and a barn house. It was dark, and the moon was high in the sky with stars dancing around. To his side, there was a man in red that was vigorously writing in a notebook, while in front of him, you leaned against him, with his hands covering your ears.
" Oh, I can see the gates of heaven! "
" I don't think covering my ears is going to do anything. " You said, lowering Ciel's hands from your ears.
As you leaned against Ciel, he could feel you leaning against the blue velvet box in his pocket. You turned, lowered your head, and looked at what was poking your side, but you couldn't see the box within his coat pocket.
" What's in your pocket? " You questioned.
" Nothing to worry about right now. I think Sebastian is done. "
(Flashback Over)
" Then, what of my engagement with Elizabeth? "
" You had called off your engagement with Lady Elizabeth. So, you could pursue Lady Y/n, who stayed in your care, for months. "
Sebastian opened the ring box and showed Ciel the ring as he started to explain your story.
