Chapter 7: Home At Last

Ugh. Training is the worst, Breeze thought to himself. Ever since they'd gotten settled into Avengers Tower, every morning there some new training session for them.

While some of it was helpful, most of the time he felt like it was just pointless fighting. Even though Breeze didn't know too much about defending himself, he still didn't think they needed this much training.

Breeze just listened in boredom as Wanda explained something about not overusing his powers. I know most of this stuff already, he sighed silently. Though, I guess it wouldn't hurt hearing it from some magical expert or whatever.

"I want you to demonstrate your powers to me," Wanda said. Breeze summoned a small storm cloud above them. "Good," Wanda said. "Now, we're gonna see how well your powers do against mine." Her eyes went red as she started magicking Breeze's cloud. "This'll test how durable your powers are against others."

Already, Breeze felt his power faltering. But he didn't want to show his weakness. He continued keeping the storm cloud up, while Wanda's magic became stronger. It took a few minutes before Breeze finally had to let the cloud go. He panted slightly.

"You're pretty strong," Wanda said.

"You think?" Breeze asked. "I mean- I never thought I was strong. I've never really been good at fighting."

"Well your powers are pretty durable against my magic," Wanda said. "With a bit more of these exercises, I'm sure you can strengthen them."

"I can make my powers stronger?" Breeze asked.

"With training, yeah," Wanda said.

"Wow," Breeze said. "I never knew that."

Wanda smiled. "Don't worry. That's what we're here for," she said. Breeze smiled back, though noticed Loki walking into the room out of the corner of his eye.

"Loki!" he said, rushing over to him. Wanda giggled softly.

"Hey," Loki said, smiling at him.

"Hey," Breeze replied. "Sh-Shouldn't you be resting?"

"Don't worry," Loki said softly. "I'm fine, really." He went to sit down on one of the benches, and Breeze sat next to him. "It's just a bit sore sometimes, but nothing I can't handle."

"Th-That's- That's good," Breeze said.

"How's your training going?" Loki asked.

"G-Good," Breeze said. "I'm learning new things about my powers."

Loki smiled. "I figured you would eventually," he said. "With a bit more training, I bet you'll be ready for your first mission in a week or two." He ruffled Breeze's hair softly, and Breeze chuckled.

"I'm kinda nervous, to be honest," he said. "I mean, the attack with Hydra was the first time I've actually fought in a long time... you think I'll be ready?"

"Of course you'll be ready," Loki said. "You have great powers, Breeze. Those kinds of powers will be useful."

"I mean, my powers are kinda just like Thor's," Breeze said.

"Maybe," Loki said. "But Thor can't make big tornadoes and hurricanes, now can he?"

"I guess not," Breeze giggled softly.

"So... you like it here, right?" Loki asked.

"O-Of course," Breeze said. "It's much better than traveling from city to city, other than having to get up early every morning." Loki chuckled. "But, other than that, there's good food, we get our rooms... I never thought we'd have a normal home again."

"I wouldn't exactly call this a normal home," Loki said. "But I'm sure it's good enough for you guys."

"It's more than enough," Breeze said. "Y-You gave us so much more than we deserve."

"Nonsense," Loki said. "You kids have been through enough. You've stayed together this entire time, helping and caring for each other. You worked so hard to come all this way."

"It wasn't always like that," Breeze muttered quietly.

"What do you mean?" Loki asked softly.

Breeze was quiet for a moment. "It wasn't just us four at first," he said softly. "We has another friend. Her name was Katherine."

"Was she.. like you?" Loki asked.

"Yeah. She had the power to control shadows," Breeze said. "W-When we were escaping, she caught captured. By the time we noticed she was gone, it was too late to go back..."

There was a moment of silence between the two. Then, Loki slowly pulled him into a hug.

"I'm sorry," he said softly. "I know what it's like to lose people I care about..." He pulled away slightly to look at Breeze. "But you should be thankful that the rest of you stayed together all these years. You may not have Katherine anymore, but you still have them."

"I guess so," Breeze said. "Though I still feel guilty everyday for leaving her behind."

"There wasn't much you could've done," Loki said. "You were young and more afraid back then."

Breeze sighed. "Thanks," he said softly. "You would've liked her.. she was amazing."

Loki smiled. "I'm sure she was," he said. "You should get back to your training now. I'll be here in case you need anything."

"Alright," Breeze said, smiling back up at him. He got up and walked away.

He sighed happily. Even if they'd lost so much on the way, the gang finally found what they'd been so hopeful to come across: a true home.
