We All Live in a Yellow Submarine~
"So this is your ship?" You held onto the railing as Bepo put you down.
"Yes!" The bear puffed up happily. "Isn't it great?"
"It sure is different...." You weren't an expert on the topic, but you were pretty sure most pirates had actual ships, not submarines with a bare deck.
The sun was beginning to rise, soft hues of orange and red filled the sky as morning began to break. Penguin's rescue mission had cut it close for you, but better late than never. You leaned more against the rails, bending over to resting your arms on them as you watched the rest of the crew scramble on board and run around in an attempt to prepare to leave.
Bepo offered you an apology as he hurried to join the crew and soon you were just about the only person left on the deck. Everyone except Penguin and another man had gone inside to do their jobs.
The two men approached you, both smiling widely.
"Miss, why don't you come inside? The Captain will be here soon." Penguin stood beside you, motioning to the one door that led into the ship.
"Nah, I don't want to get in the way. Don't want to overstay my welcome when he gets back either. I'm going to have to find a spot to lay low before it gets too late in the day."
"I thought you said she was coming with us!" The other man pouted. He wore the same jumper his friend did, but had a blue hat with a red bill instead and sunglasses that blocked his eyes from you.
"I thought she was!" Penguin raised his hands in his defense and turned to you. "Why don't you come along? You won't have to worry about avoiding the law here then."
"As fun as that sounds, this is the only place I have any leads for getting back my memories. I gotta see what I can find here." You scanned the beach and edge of town for the pirate captain. He still wasn't back and it was making you nervous all over again.
"So you've forgotten more than just your name." You jumped and almost fell to your feet as the man you were looking for appeared behind you, close enough to touch. His two men did the same, even letting out a collective yelp in surprise.
"Holy hell don't scare me like that!" You huffed and crossed your arms.
"Pay better attention then." He extended a hand, revealing your locket. "I hope this is it, I'm not going back there again."
You breathed a sigh of relief and reached for it, only for him to pull it right out of reach.
"I went through a lot of trouble to get this trinket. You didn't think I would do it for free, did you? I am a pirate after all." He flashed his teeth in a sly smile, the sunlight reflected off his golden eyes and gave him a mischievous glint.
Of course there was a catch. "And here I thought you were a nice guy." You retracted your hand and returned to crossing your arms.
"I am. Nice enough that I'll offer the nameless girl a job." He held the locket out once again, this time dangling it by it's chain and letting it swing from side to side. "Join my crew and you can have it back."
You looked back to the island and then to the locket. The island may hold answers for you, but there was also the chance it didn't. There was something drawing you to the necklace more than anything else as well. Something was telling you it couldn't be left behind.
"We don't have all day woman. Its time to set sail." He warned.
"I'm not wearing one of those matching suits." You pointed back to Penguin and his friend, both giddy with excitement.
"That's fine." He gave you the locket. "Welcome to the Heart pirates."
----
Right after "setting sail," the captain took you down to the infirmary to check out what he could do for your legs and head. After waking up earlier, the headache had crept back up on you. Now it was more of a migraine and every creak from the ship or sound of feet hitting the floors made you wince in pain.
He had you sitting up on a table while he sat in a chair across from you, legs crossed as he tried to fill out some papers with what information he could figure out about you. He scratched his goatee with a pen as he scanned the papers.
"So as far as we know, you have no name, no idea of how old you are, or any of your medical history."
"That sums it up." You fiddled with the heart handing off the chain around your neck. It felt right sitting there.
He stood up and put the papers down beside you. "Sudden memory loss can be contributed to a few different things, but..." He walked behind you and started prodding at the back of your head. "It looks like you got yourself beat up and hit your head at some point."
It felt weird having the strange man move your hair around to get a better look at the wound when he found it. You decided you didn't care for having people touch you.
"So what's that mean for me?" You relaxed once he released you to get some supplies from a cabinet only to tense up again when he pushed your head down to have better access to the spot.
"I can't say. That's a chance your memories can return on their own or that certain places, items, or events could trigger them to come back." The smell of rubbing alcohol filled the air and you felt a twinge of pain as he cleaned the spot. "And there's the possibility that you may never get them back. Only time can tell in situations like this."
"Okay. Can't really miss something I know nothing about anyway."
"So you're fine with that?" He finished up and came around to pull his chair forward, sitting down uncomfortably close.
"No. I've lost my entire life up until now. But there's not much I can do either. I can get angry about it all I want, doesn't mean anything will change."
He chuckled as he took a few notes. "Quite the mature outlook on such a bleak situation."
"Ehh, it is what it is." You shrugged. "Are we almost done here?"
"Let me check those legs. Bruising shouldn't be enough to have you limping around so much."
After more poking and prodding he leaned back in his chair and eyed you. "Most of the bruises are only surface deep, the rest are because you've managed to get fractures in both legs. I'd say they were almost self inflicted."
"Look, I woke up like this, I don't know what happened." You lit up for a second. "Well, actually, the guy that had my locket told me some interesting stuff. He said something along the lines of me taking out a bunch of marines at a nearby island."
"That sounds about right. Your knuckles look like you were in a fight and if you were more focused on hand to hand combat it could lead to injuries like what your legs suffered. You're going to have to stay off your feet for a while to heal up properly, the next couple weeks at least."
"Let me get something straight real quick because I don't see how any of this benefits you. I don't know anything about myself, what skills I may or may not have, what kind of life I lead before, or really anything that could make me useful. And to top it off I'm going to be even more useless for a while because of my injuries. Why would you want me on your crew?"
He gave you another one of those sly grins. "Because I have a feeling I know who you are."
Your eyes widened and you leaned forward. "Really? Tell me!"
He snorted. "Later. There's some work I need to do first and you need to get cleaned up."
Your shoulders slumped in disappointment.
"We can talk more tomorrow. For now you'll be staying in here. There's a bed in the corner for you and a bathroom through that door. Take these for pain, run a bath and get some rest. I'll send Bepo over with a change of clothes and he can help you." The doctor gave you a couple pills with a glass of water and got ready to leave as a thought struck you.
"So am I just supposed to call you captain? I didn't catch your name."
He paused in the doorway. "Trafalgar Law. Call me Trafalgar or captain, I don't care." He waved dismissively and left, the door swinging shut behind him.
Trafalgar was too long. Maybe you'd call him Traf or something. Would he get pissy if you called him Law? That was worth looking into.
You took what he gave you and washed it down with the water, setting the glass on the table before carefully lowered yourself to your feet and limped to the bathroom. Bepo was supposed to come help but you weren't keen on being touched again, let alone having someone see you naked.
There was a linen closet in the bathroom full of everything you'd need and the tub was pretty big, much to your delight. You needed a bath something fierce and you'd be able to soak in the tub without having to squeeze in. You got the water running at the perfect temperature, added some sort of bubble bath stuff, and began peeling off your clothes. The shirt was beyond saving but with a good cleaning the shorts might survive.
Your timing couldn't have been more perfect. Right as you lowered into the hot water there was a knock on the door and Bepo peeked in.
"I was supposed to help you miss!"
"It's fine, I got it." You felt a blush rise up your neck, glad the bubbles covered you.
"If you're worried about me please don't. I'm only interested in lady bears." He came in the room the rest of the way with an arm full of a change of clothes, taking a seat on the toilet.
You couldn't help but laugh. Of course he'd only like other bears. "That makes sense now that I think about it. I've never seen a talking bear before so you threw me in for a loop there."
"Oh, sorry." He apologized, his head drooping a bit.
"It's nothing to apologize about." You giggled. He was charming, in a weird kind of way. "So are there any other women on the ship or am I the first?"
You got your hair wet and started washing it, glad that the smell of salt water was being replaced with the subtle scent of lavender.
"There's one other, Ikkaku. But she's busy right now, that's why captain sent me to help. Ah!" He suddenly remembered what he was there for, jumping to his feet. "Do you need help washing?"
"No, I got it." You shook your head.
"I'm sorry." He apologized once again and sat back down.
"You really don't have to say sorry to everything. I just....don't like being touched I think." For some reason being grabbed by the guards yesterday didn't bother you as much or when Bepo carried you to the ship, but it seemed the more contact you had with people the more it got under your skin.
"That makes sense, you don't know anyone here yet."
"I hope that's all there is to it." You finished cleaning up and the water was beginning to feel cool. "I think I'm done in here."
Bepo looked unsure of what to do, follow orders or respect your want to be left alone.
You held out your hand, knowing there was no way you'd be able to get out on your own. "Can you help me up?"
"S-sure." He happily got to his feet and took your hand, pulling you carefully to your feet and offering you a towel.
Even though he made it obvious he had no interest in you, you were glad to wrap up in the towel and cover yourself. He led you to the spot he originally was in and let you sit. With a second towel you dried off your hair and felt whatever Law gave you kick in. The pain was receding fast but you were getting sleepy as well.
"Can you turn around for a second?" You asked Bepo and he complied quietly. You threw on the shirt and pants he brought. Both were too big but they stayed on at least. "Okay." You yawned as he turned back around.
"Captain said you should go straight to bed after cleaning up."
"That sounds like a good idea." You were having a hard time keeping your eyes open.
"I'm going to have to carry you."
There was no point in complaining, you were too tired to. With a nod from you, he picked you up gently and took you to the infirmary bed. It felt so much better then the floor of the cell you were in only a few hours ago.
"Thanks Bepo, you're a cool bear." You mumbled into the pillow, already falling asleep.
"Ah! Thank you!" He chimed and crept out the room quietly.

I didn't plan on it but a lot of the main character ended up being based on an OC of mine, like her personality and the locket. It's fun writing someone with a bit more sarcasm to them though so I couldn't help it.
