The Telephone

Crnnnnnnnggggg.........crrrnggggg....crngggg...

Mr. Webster almost stumbled upon me as he lifted up my receiver. For a moment, he couldn't hear anything from the other side. Some feeble voices went right past his ear. After a bit of focusing, the voice became clear. He did not say that customary 'Hello..'. He did not say anything.

I was feeling guilty myself. Two hours have passed by and Mr. Webster is still pretty shaken. The last call has drained him of all life. He is getting up and sitting down. Moving in circles around the flower vase. Encircling it on and on. He isn't aware of what he is doing.  His wife has passed away, and her struggle for life on the hospital bed has finally come to an end.....

People expect high things from me. Good tidings are always welcome. Somewhere, someone's relative has given birth to a baby boy. Someone's cousin has got a huge scholarship. Some friend is coming over.

Diana picked me up almost instantly. She had been waiting.

A slight smiled etched across her lips. She felt light. Her grandparents have reached home safe. A sigh of relief found its way out of her mouth.

For ages, I've been doing this. Delivering news. At times, I feel so ashamed of myself. I bridge gaps between all kinds of people across this planet. I mend their minds.

Me, a carrier of Reality.
