You Rhyme With My Heart (Part 2) : Six Months In The Friend Zone

Hey peeps. Just wanted to make a note of the arrows that are at the top to switch from the video to the picture and vice versa. Some people don't notice straight off is all. Oh and It's probably best to listen to the song nearer the end. Those that know the lyrics will know when ; )

Lex's POV

It's been six whole months since I met Michael and there's been nothing but great friendship between us...which is exactly why I'm miserable. The truth is, I have a huge crush on Michael. I really like him but I'm certain he only sees me as a friend. Although, it's probably for the best. I've never had a boyfriend and that's probably why I'm scared. I don't want to get hurt.

It's spring break. Me, Jessie and Marcus are at my house getting ready to leave for our annual camping trip. We're up in my room packing the camping equipment away.

"Did you ask?" Marcus asks Jessie.

"I sure did!" Jessie replies with a cheeky grin.

"What are you guys talking about?" I ask feeling a little left out.

"Nothing." They both say then carry on putting away the flash lights and blankets.

"Are y'all up to something?" I ask.

They just snicker so I decide to ignore them.

Once everything is packed away, I sling my backpack over my shoulder, then we all head for the front door but before we reach it, there's a knock. I answer it with my two friends behind me and am quite surprised to see Michael stood there. He was wearing a black and white leather jacket (one of my mother's designs) with a red t-shirt underneath and he had a backpack on his shoulder.

"Oh hey Mike." I said cheerfully.

"Hey, Lex. You guys ready to go?" He asks and I give him a puzzled look which soon turns to an annoyed one when I turn around to look and Marcus and Jessie who are trying to look innocent.

I turn back to Michael.

"Err come inside Michael. I just gotta talk to these guys for a minute. Make yourself at home." I say sweetly.

"Alright, thanks." Michael says then goes to take a seat in the living room.

I pull Marcus and Jess aside to talk to them.

"Err guys?" I start.

"Yeeeeeessssss?" They both say.

"What the fuck?!" I hiss in a whisper. "Why didn't you guys tell me Michael was coming?!"

"Ok, ok! You got us!" Jessie confesses. "Our boyfriends are coming this year."

"And?"

"And my boyfriend Tony is driving while Marcus and his boyfriend, Rico sit in the back." Jess continues.

"And?!" I ask again growing irritated.

"We didn't want to make you feel like the third wheel." Jessie mewls.

"So?!"

"Ugh!" Marcus groans loudly. "Ok! Cut the bullshit Jess!" He then turns to me and points. "You need to make a move on Michael! For the love of god, we all know you like him so stop being a fucking pussy and tell to him how you feel!" He scolds in a whisper. "I ain't gonna lie. Michael has fine written all over that ass which is why he won't be single forever. So as one of your loyal best friends, I'm tellin' you now Lex whatever-your-middle-name-is Walker, you are going to get in that fucking car with Michael, make conversation and fucking enjoy his company! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!"

Jess snaps her fingers in a Z shape then they both stare at me waiting for my response. My eyes widened as I'm taken aback by Marcus's sudden outburst.

"Jesus, Marcus! Ok, ok! Fine!" I whine flailing my arms. I storm off to the living room then take a few breathes to calm myself before walking in with a big grin on my face.

"We're ready now." I said with a light sigh.

"Great! Who's riding with me?" Michael asks looking at the three of us.

Marcus nudges me forward slightly.

"Jess and I are gonna go in the car with our boyfriends and we thought Lex could keep you company." Marcus says and I shoot him a death glare before turning back to Michael.

"Ok let's go!"

********

After getting into Michael's black BMW with red interior (sexy car for a sexy man), we started driving to the campsite my mom hires for us every year. Thankfully, Michael knows the place. It's a long drive but it's worth it in the end.

"So, have you got next week's poem ready yet?" He asks.

Michael persuaded me to write for the paper again. I don't regret my decision at all.

"I brought my journal in my bag. I haven't come up with anything just yet. What about you? Have you written anything new?" I ask with a smirk.

Michael told me that in his spare time he writes song lyrics. The first time I ever went to his house, his mother told me that he sings like an angel but he refuses to sing for me.

"Yes actually." He smiles lightly.

"Really? What's it called?" I ask excitedly.

His lyrics are amazing but I'm sure they'd be much better if I could hear them sung to me.

"Secret." He smirks.

"Aww come on Mike." I whine.

"Nope." He chuckles.

"Sing it to me then."

He briefly took his eyes off the road to look at me.

"Please sing it to me." I insist.

"I really don't feel like now is the best time. Oh look, we're here!" He says changing the subject.

I look around to see that we have arrived.

I heard that he sings for everyone in his family and their guests so why won't he sing for me? If his voice is as beautiful as they say then why is he so hesitant to sing for me?

********

After pitching the tents, it began to get dark. We were all pretty tired from the long drive so we all went to sleep. Well...except me.

I couldn't get him off my mind!

I heard my tent door being unzipped and sat up to see who it was.

"Jess? What are you doing up?"

"I was worried about you. You've been looking kinda down since we got here. What's wrong?"

She wraps the blanket over her shoulders a little tighter as she sits next to me.

I sigh then look over at Jess.

"It's nothing really. I've just been thinking is all."

"About?" She presses.

Michael's POV

I got out of my tent to go use the bathroom but stopped in my tracks when I heard talking coming from Lex's tent.

Should I be nosy? Yep.

"It's nothing really. I've just been thinking is all." She says quietly.

"About?"

Oh Jess is in there.

I hear Lex sigh.

"Michael." She confesses.

Me? Why would she be thinking about me? I really like Lex and have been trying to show her since the day we met but I don't think that she's been picking it up too well. Either that or she's avoiding me. I know she's not stupid. If she doesn't like me in that way and we've been getting along well then why? Have I done something wrong?

"What about him?" Jess asks.

"I want to tell him but I-I'm scared." She whimpers.

Tell me what? What is she afraid of?

I move closer to the tent to get a better listen.

"Lex, listen to me. You need to tell him. You guys staying friends is obviously only hurting you so he needs to know." Jess explains.

What did I do? She doesn't want to be friends? Maybe that's why she was so jumpy when I came to the door today.

"You're right. I'm gonna tell him tomorrow night. Just wish me luck ok?"

She won't be needing that luck Jess. By tomorrow morning, I'll be gone...

Lex's POV

The next morning. I found that Jess had fallen asleep next to me. She's such a good friend. So understanding.

I got out of my tent after changing into some black skinny jeans and an oversized baby blue jumper. I was surprised to see Michael packing away the last of his tent then sling his belongings over his shoulder.

"Morning, Mike!" I called for him.

He turned to look at me but then shook his head and started walking towards his car.

What's his problem?

"Michael!" I called again as I started jogging in his direction.

Once I was walking in time with his fast pace I called him again but he ignored me.

"Michael?! What is wrong with you? Michael will you stop ignoring me. Please. Talk to me!" I yell.

Michael stops abruptly and turns sharply to me.

"What?" He hisses. "What, Lex?! Tell me what there is to talk about huh? Cause' I'd love to know!" he says sarcastically whilst flailing his arms.

"Michael, what is the matter with you? You're worrying me-"

I reach out for him but he recoils.

"Don't." He says firmly. "Just stop lying to my face and say it already! I know you never wanted to be my friend since I heard you and Jess talking last night but why did you let me believe that you actually cared about me for six whole months?!" He shouts.

"I do care! Michael, I do!" I cry.

Tears are streaming down my face.

He got the wrong idea.

"Michael, the truth is, I-"

"No! I don't want to hear it. You admitted it last night! You don't want to be my friend so I'm doing you a favor. I'm gone." He snaps.

He begins walking away from me again but I don't run after him. I'm contemplating what to do in my mind.

Do it, Lex! Do it! For the love of god! Tell him before he walks out of your life!

"It's true!" I shout and he turns to look at me. "I don't want to be your friend." I say quietly.

"Thanks for the news flash." He says dryly then turns to walk away again.

"I want to be so much more." I whimper.

I hung my head low. He didn't hear me and he probably doesn't care anyway...is what I thought.

I heard the sound of his bags dropping to the ground, then heavy footsteps coming in my direction. When I look up, Michael grabs my hand then starts running, dragging me along with him.

"Mi-Michael! What are you doing? Where are we going?" I ask frantically.

He ignores me and keeps running until we he stops and let's go of my hand.

I bend over with my hands on my knees trying to catch my breath and when I finally do, I stand up to see Michael standing in front of a stream with his back facing me.

"Michael?"

"Did you mean it?" He asks still facing away from me.

I smile then walk closer to him.

"Yes." I felt my cheeks heat as I turned my face away.

"What if...What if I said I felt the same?" He asked.

"Why didn't you say anything?" I ask.

"I didn't think you felt the same. Come on Lex! You've been walking me to that friend zone like a dog on a leash for six months! I made it so obvious I liked you." He says flailing his arms.

"How?" I challenge.

"I brought you that bracelet with a heart on it." He points to my wrist.

I stare at the wonderful gift he bought for my birthday that lays beautifully on my wrist.

"That was a birthday gift. Just like those chocolates you got me last month!" I argue.

"I gave you those chocolates on valentine's day in a heart shaped box with a note that said "Love Michael!" He retorts.

"S-so?" I say trying to hide my...fear...

""So?" Is that what you think? Did you even hear what I just said? Lex! I'm in love with you!" he exclaims.

I gasp and my eyes widen. I cover my mouth in shock.

He what?

He...loves me?

"I'm pretty sure I've known since the day I met you but I..." He trails off.

"Michael?"

"Yes?"

I take a deep breath in preparation for my coming words.

"I'm not just some girl,

I'm a woman,

And if you want to be my man,

I need tender loving care,

And your loving hand.

My heart is extremely fragile,

And needs constant attention,

It needs hugs and kisses and not to mention,

Someone that I can see day and night,

And someone to tell me it'll be alright,

Someone to trust and to trust me back,

Someone to ensure there is nothing I lack

Should I give you my heart let alone my soul?

Will you be the half that makes me whole?

I don't want a play mate,

I just want to see,

If you'll be that man...

Do really you love me?"

I whisper the last words of the poem I'd written when I discovered that I was worried about this moment that I knew I'd share with someone one day.

Michael stares at me for a good few minutes. I don't look up from the ground I am now staring at but I feel his eyes on me. He sighs then smiles a small smile before opening his mouth to let me hear something beautiful.

"Sun comes up on this new morning,

shifting shadows, a songbird sings,

and if these words could keep you happy,

I'd do anything"

I hear an Angel. His name is Michael and he is gracing me with the beautiful sound of his voice. We stare intently into each other's eyes as he continues and places his hand on my cheek once again.

"And if you feel alone, I'll be your shoulder

With a tender touch, you know me so well

Somebody once said, it's the soul that matters

Baby, who can really tell when two hearts belong so well

Maybe the walls will tumble

And the sun may refuse to shine

And when I say, I love you

Baby, you gotta know

That's for all time

Baby, you gotta know

That's for all time"

I didn't even realize we'd gotten so close. We were mere inches away from each other's lips. I could feel the warmth of his breath on my face.

"I wanted you to hear this first because I wrote it for you. I was waiting for the right moment. My answer to your previous question 'Do I really love you?' My answer is...for all time, baby. For all time." He whispers caressing my cheek. "Be my first and last love, Lex." He pleads.

"Only if..."

"Anything! Anything at all."

"Only if you'll be mine too..."

Before he can say another word, I press my lips to his and I just know that I've waited too long for this. I wrap my arms around his neck and he places his around my waist.

We part when we hear a click and look over to the direction in which we entered this area to see our friends.

Tony is stood behind Jess with his arms wrapped around her waist and Rico is doing the same with Marcus. Marcus is holding a camera and they are all smiling widely.

Although I'm sure both Michael and I find this moment highly embarrassing, neither of us let go of one another.

"Finally!" Marcus says dramatically.

We all laugh.

I think my life is about to get a lot more interesting.
