We have all had daydreams about saving the day at least one day in our lives. Whether it's stopping a school shooter or saving a cat from a tree, we have all imagined something. And that's great. It shows that you are willing to do things to help others-but will you be able to take the risks that saving the day might involve?
All heroes go through some kind of hardship, whether it be from a past experience or something more current. Despite these, they still tend to do the right thing. Take for example Steve Roger, aka Captain America. He was once a small and petite young man. Then, BOOM! He is Captain America as we know him (I'm not going to explain how because I already expect everyone reading this to know). He was barely getting by in training. It was a struggle for him. Now look at him. He's punched Hitler many times in the face and has even saved the world from Hydra-even if it meant risking his life. Would you be able to take risks such as crash-landing into the frigid sea where your death inevitably waited?
Once in our lives, we have all done something friendly or helped someone out. It could be holding the door open for them or giving them the last piece of cake. Now, these small things don't make you a hero, but they make you look like a better person. Holding the door open isn't that hard. Almost anyone could do it. Something not nearly everyone can do is risk their lives for someone else. It takes heart to want yourself to die either than someone else. What if a gunman walked into your school or workplace? What would you do? What if that gunman gave you an option, he could kill/kidnap you, and spare everyone else, or he could spare you and kill everyone else. What would you choose?
Now, regarding instincts, which were mentioned in the last chapter, they are always going to affect our actions. A person's instincts, however, vary from person to person. Although, when put into a situation where your life is at stake, our instincts kick in, we may not always make the best decision regarding our own health. Why is that? Because the human race isn't entirely selfish. We still care for others. Now, I'm not saying that we look at people and automatically think that we must protect them like a child, but we feel a great sense of responsibility. We get the idea that it would be best to just die rather than have a whole group of people die.
One of my best examples would be a "mother's instinct." A mother/father is almost always going to put their child first. They feel a deep love for their child. A love so strong that not even death can do them part. Sometimes a person will get this feeling and want to save others. A perfect example of a mother's instinct would be the movie Annabelle. Yes, the horror movie with creepy dolls. If you ever watched it, you probably noticed all the sacrifices the mother had made-and was going to make-for her child.
So will our sense of responsibility overcome our instincts? Perhaps. The true answer will probably never come to us until we are put into that type of situation.
