Nadia stared into his eyes longer than she had intended to, she wanted to feel him through his eyes. What was wrong with her Twin? He wasn't himself. This wasn't the mood he was in when be went to watch the football match, was it? She knew her Twin so much to know even if his team lost he won't come back home sulking the way he did. But maybe something had happened and he was finding it so hard to share with her or he wanted her to follow him so they could have a private conversation.
She softly loosened her hold on his arm and her fingers traced downward until they laced with his. She looked at their entwined hands and then back at him face that was staring at her with a stupefied expression, as if he had never expected her to do that. She wanted him to speak to her, to bare his soul out for her, to know what was wrong with him. And she knew if they went to their room, he would do all he could to change their conversation and she wouldn't want that. He had done that trick to her numerous times, she wouldn't let it work on her.
She pulled his hand and turned to walk to the living room, but behind her, his figure was as sturdy as he could be. Over her shoulder, she turned to him. "What are you doing, Twin? Come on, I promise to let you have my ice cream. Let's get to the living room." From the way she was able to drag him to the living room, Nadia could sense reluctance in each step he took and she wondered what was wrong with him. Something so huge to make him act this way.
She pulled him to the sofa and made him sit down before she disappeared into the kitchen, she came out bearing a huge bowl of ice cream and grinned at him when their eyes met. "Here, it's among my favorite flavours!" She said excitedly and sat down beside him, she was aware of the way he had slightly shifted. That stung at her heart, but she quickly masked up her emotions with an even brighter smile.
"Take the spoon, let's devour on it before it starts to melt." She said and handed him one of the spoons. With tentative hands, she watched as he took the spoon from her hand but he didn't make any attempt to take the ice cream and she did both of them the favor and started taking it.
She was silent, and he was too. Just staring at her in a discreet way he didn't know she had realized he was. They were like that for a few minutes, with the ice cream between them and Nadia devouring it non-stop, while he stole glances at her.
She was about to speak when he beat her at it, "Don't you get cold taking ice cream at any chance you get?" He asked out of mere curiosity, not thinking of what that might make her think.
She nonchalantly shrugged off her shoulders and grinned, "I do, but not most of the time. It's only when I take it a day before my period starts, I'll get a cold. And that's when the cravings are too strong to ignore. Come on, you clearly know it!" She nudged his shoulder and he shifted again, which made Nadia closed the lid of the bowl. No matter how she wanted to keep taking this ice cream, she wanted to know what was wrong with her twin first.
She placed the bowl down and took both his hands in hers, which made him turned to fully look at her. "Tell me, what's wrong, Twin? You aren't yourself anymore. You've been sulking, are you alright? Did you lost the game? Or something is bothering you? Are you sick?" She was looking at him with eyes so soft that he could feel the feathery caress of her eyes on his bare skin.
He shook his head and tried to pull his hands away from hers but she firmly held them. "You're hardly ever like this unless you did something wrong, or something is bothering you. Tell me please, you promised to be sharing all your worries with me, didn't you?" She asked, fixing her amber colored eyes that made it hardly impossible for him to take his eyes off her.
"I'm h-" he immediately held himself back, not knowing what had stopped him from telling her the truth. Maybe he was afraid of her outburst when she found out he had been fooling her all this time or maybe, some part of his heart wanted this softness, the look in her eyes, to linger for a few more minutes.
"I'm all ears, you're what?" She encouraged, nodding her head.
"I'm just tired, I need to sleep." He wanted to stand up but she held him back and when he turned to her, she had a mischievous smile on her lips.
"I know just the best way to relieve your anger—" For a moment, he didn't realize what she was about to do until she cupped his face and in a flash, Nadia had merged their lips in the most passionate way he had ever imagined. It was soft, slow, and like she said, muscles relieving.
A moment, for a single moment, he thought he had enjoyed it before something crossed his mind and he forcefully pulled his face away from her, standing up immediately. He fixed his eyes on the ground while she stood up and walked toward him but he took a few steps back. "I'm...I'm Hussain..." he let his words trailed off, realizing he had played way too hard. He only wanted to make her angry, didn't he?
Nadia's hands that were about to land on his chest got onto his cheeks almost as immediately as he let those words out. She didn't know how she did it, but she had slapped her husband's twin, so loud that she shuddered within. "What do you mean?! What the hell is the meaning of this?!" She asked through gritted teeth, pulling back her tears and feeling the way her heart bubbled with anger.
And then she realized, the reluctance, the shifting, stolen glances, she shouldn't have been so stupid! Or in other words, her husband's twin shouldn't have fooled her the way he did!!!
"I tried to tell you I wasn't..." she immediately cut him off, stopping him right before he said whatever flimsy excuse it was he had.
"Just don't! Do you realize what you've done, Hussain?! I kissed you...I..." her tears fell down no matter how much she tried to stop them, the sting of his betrayal stung more painfully than she had ever imagined it would.
He tried to walk away, but she roughly pulled him back and lifted her hand to slap him again but he held her tiny wrist. When Nadia looked into his eyes, they were a shade of blood and something she had never seen. Anger, annoyance at either himself or hers, and something she wasn't able to fathom yet.
"Don't you dare walk out on me when you've created this mess for your stupid arrogant satisfaction! You want to see me like this, huh? Angered, feeling so dumb and stupid! You've gotten that, there, you have your revenge!" She thundered and flicked at her tears but more found their ways to her cheeks. "I want to ask you something, and I dare you to lie to me! Who took Mufeeda to Kano? Was it you or my husband?"
Hussain looked at how she was crying with anger flaring from her eyes before he released his hold on her wrist. He wanted to see her hurt like this, but why was it hurting him too?
"It was me."
"And where is my husband? Is he aware of this game of yours like you two have always did?!"
"No, he isn't. And he's watching football match like he told you."
She looked at him from head to toe with despise in her eyes before she hissed softly, cleared her tears and left the living room without another word. Hussain stared at her retreating back and slumped on the next sofa to him. He took his face into his palms and sighed, what just happened?!
When Nadia closed the door behind her, she slid down onto the floor and broke into tears. Why was this happening to her? Had she always been this dumb or she was only like this when it came to them? She knew there was something different about them, there should be.
She cried so hard until she felt her head throbbing and she went to the bathroom to take her bathe. When she came out, she remembered her bowl of ice cream that she left unattended on the carpet and she knew it would melt before morning. Reluctantly, she walked to the living room and both him and the bowl weren't there anymore.
She went to the kitchen and when she opened the fridge, there laid her bowl of ice cream carefully stacked back and she rolled her eyes out of exasperation. Wasted sweet gesture, she scoffed. She was walking back to their room when another version of them walked in, this one had a wide smile on his face and he was so excited to see her.
"Singleton!" He said excitedly, she was about to move toward him when she stopped herself. Hussain called her Singleton too when he wanted to fool her, and he might do this to avenge for slapping him.
She ignored whoever it was between them and walked to their room. She didn't care if it was her husband, because she was angry at the two twin brothers now. She heard the doorknob turned and he walked in with shagged shoulders.
He walked to where she was seated and sat beside her, she quickly shifted. "Nadia, what's wrong? Did something happen? Or have you remembered your Modanisa abaya I've poured your favorite flavored ice cream again?"
She had a closed off look on her face and her eyes were cold when she looked at Hassan. She knew it was him since he spoke about the first day they had met, but she can use her anger to make him spill their difference. "It's not like I can recognize the two to know who's with me." She rolled her eyes at him and he sighed. He took her into an embrace, ignoring the way she was pushing him away, trying to get out of his hold.
"Nadia, I'm sorry. You fought with Second H again?" She rolled her eyes again and scoffed out of exasperation.
"Don't expect I'll speak to you unless you're going to tell me what differs you and that cold twin brother of yours." He looked pained at the word she described his brother as, even though she felt guilty for making him feel that way, but she had been deeply hurt too.
"Nadia..." he whispered and let his words trailed off, and she could feel the way he was loosening his hold on her body. She freed herself from him and got to the bed. She laid down, fully ignoring him as she pulled the duvet to her chest.
She was aware of the pained looked he was flashing her from where he sat. She had always known that nothing hurt him like whatever it was that had Hussain involved. To him, Hussain was his second soul. And whenever someone said something bad about him, he felt insulted himself. If she had said this while laughing, he would have laughed along with her and denied his lovely brother being cold. But she was serious.
She heard as he stood up and walked to the bathroom. She wasn't asleep until he was done with everything and came to the bed without a single word shared between them. She hated this, they fought with Hassan, but never like this. She felt as he laid on the bed and pulled the duvet to himself too, and without a word, turned off the light.
She wanted to scream, but then remembering what had happened between her and her husband's twin, she knew she had to act this way. She was certain Hassan wouldn't pull up with this fight for a day, they had never gone to bed angry at each other, he would forgive her and tell her what she wanted.
