Q&A Part 1: My Artwork
I'm both surprised and not surprised that a good chunk of the Q&A questions were about my artwork, how I do it and stuff and what direction I plan to go in life.
Well😅 I've answered these questions a million times on this book. Even made an entire update dedicated to such. I'm sadly not gonna do it again, or at least not so in depth as last time. After the tips and tricks, I'll leave pictures of my top 20 favorite pieces over the years.
So, here's the basics/life saving tips as well as a little overview of my preferred medium!
I'm a pen reference artist (for now). This means that I specialize in creating pictures with pens. Yes, pens that you'd sign a check with. This IS NOT a medium/art you can perfect in a few days/weeks. I've been a pen artist for at least five years AND I'm still nowhere near as good as I wish I'd be. I REALLY want to perfect pen art to the point where I can effortlessly shade to the point you cant see strokes. I know what my exact problems are that's keep me from said goal yet all at the same time I cant get out of old habits.
1.) Gel pens are a BIG no no!!! Only use ball point pens!!! Ball points allow shading and pressure control while with gel you cant do anything besides one shade. The cheaper the ballpoint the better. Bic has a great selection that's affordable. A pack of 20 for like two bucks and it keeps me occupied for months. Furthermore, lots of pen artists use lots of different pens and brands for their pictures. One for outlines, multiples for particular shades, maybe you want different colors too.
2.) Keep your pictures one or two colors at most. Pen pictures are easiest if your reference picture is altered to look greyscale/monochromatic since your artwork WILL be monochrome. Multiple colors dont look right and are most times really messy. Also avoid black ink at all costs. Black is hardest color to work with AND the least appealing. In my experiences, red is the easiest to work with while blue and green ink looks the best! I like to use blue the most.
3.) PERFECT PRESSURE CONTROL!!!
Pen art CANT happen without pressure control. Dont know what that is? Its the pressure of which you apply to a writing utensil when you write, draw, etc. If you have a naturally heavy pressure, pen art isnt for you. Or, you need to learn to lighten up a bit. Pen pressure is extremely crucial to your art. Pressure is what makes pen art possible because unlike a pencil, you cant erase your lines to make it lighter. Its permanent. Light pressure = Lighter ink. Heavy pressure = Dark
4.) Choose a shading style
Pen art can be conducted by using one of two shading techniques: Crosshatching and Lines. Crosshatching is ideal for beginners. Crosshatching involves shading with intersecting lines. Its messy yes, but ideal for beginners as it gives you an idea of how pen shading is like. Line shading involves shading with only straight lines. This technique is more difficult as not everyone can draw straight lines BUT it's so much cleaner and pleasing to the eye.
Now onto my favorite pieces over the years. Remember, I am a reference artist as of right now when it comes to pen. My digital art is 100% original though. Dont go around saying I stole artwork. Over on my Instagram, the original artists have been properly credited.
