Goodbye: Bakugou x Reader

Requested by both _Rat_Queenie_ & FatherWillHearAbout

I cried so hard during this oneshot that I didn’t have the heart to edit it because I quite frankly didn’t want to cry over and over again.

It’s been awfully quiet in class 1. A. as of lately.  While it was normal for students to skip out on class due to hero studies and such, (Y/n) (L/n) hasn’t been involved in the class for quite some time now. It’s like she’s fallen off the face of the earth and it worries many. The only two people who know of her whereabouts were her two childhood friends: Katsuki Bakugou and Izuku Midoriya. As children, the three of them were almost always together given how close they all lived between one another. Years later, (Y/n) has moved but remained close with Bakugou despite the distance and it was UA that brought them closer together.

Ever since day one of UA, everyone viewed Bakugou & (Y/n)’s relationship as one of two things: A brother sister relationship or a romantically involved one. There was no in between and could you really blame their peers. Bakugou was rude towards (Y/n), but nowhere near as nasty as he would with others. She’d be able to talk with him without ridicule or violence thrown her way either. Besides Kirishima, (Y/n) could also get away with touching Bakugou and it wouldn’t enrage him in the slightest. She’s even gone as far as hugging him and Bakugou would gladly embrace her back.

Which all leads up to today… With (Y/n) being gone from UA for as long as she has without explanation, it’s gotten the blonde to worry. Bakugou tried calling her, texting her too and yet not a single response. “She’s been gone a week… Where’d that Bitch go?” Bakugou pondered out loud and it caught much of the attention of his peers. They were all wondering the same thing, yet none of them had an answer to give.

“Should we be alarmed that Mr. Aizawa and All Might haven’t been around much either?” Iida asked in return which sparked interest in the topic at hand. Yeah, isn’t it fishy that Mr. Aizawa, All Might and (Y/n) have all been gone as of lately? Are they busy? Are they in trouble? Are they doing hero work together? No… That can’t be it. All Might retired.

Where could that oddball of a trio be?

“Excuse me! Uh… Kids?” Present Mic scratched the top of his head while the other hand pulled the golden lensed glasses from his face. His students looked at their substitute expecting all their questions answered. “Eraser and All Might have been taking care of your precious lady friend.”

The class immediately thought that something was most definitely wrong for their teachers attention to be plastered on the missing peer. Normally, Aizawa wouldn’t go out of his way to help one of his students with personal matters but apparently the subject must be grim. “Something wrong with her?” Midoriya was the only one with the guts to ask. Bakugou was too wrapped up in his own thoughts thinking about what (Y/n) could be doing at this very second and why she won’t answer any of his texts. He doesn’t like being left out of the loop for as long as he is, is (Y/n) ignoring her best friend perhaps?

“Um… Kids… How should I put this?” Present Mic was visually uncomfortable as his nervous hand rubbing and teeth grinding were alarming signs of such. “(Y/n) is mighty Ill… Eraser is working on getting (Y/n) a miracle. The odds aren’t in her favor… Sorry Youngins.”

Bakugou stood up from his seat, “How sick?” He bellowed.

“She isn’t expected to uh-” Before Mic could finish delivering his answer, the blonde bolted from the classroom.

Bakugou didn’t stop until he reached the hospital and oh look! (Y/n) was indeed there… In the Intensive Care Unit with… Cancer. Stomach Cancer. Bakugou wanted to say that (Y/n) has been just fine as of lately but he ultimately can’t. He remembers (Y/n) doing research on cancer a few years back but she didn’t talk much of it. Not to forget that the signs were there. (Y/n) always had acid reflux pills on hand, never ate much, oddly enough she was always motion sensitive and was known to vomit at the littlest things like eating one bite too much or running for a minute too long. Bakugou curses not piecing together everything sooner…

“Alright,” Bakugou barged into his friend’s hospital room. (Y/n) lied upon an elevated bed with a blank nearly pained face. She didn’t look like she did a week ago… (Y/n) was worn out, pale and frail upon first sight. She heard Bakugou and turned her head to see him and her weak smile broke Bakugou. A tear fled his eye, “You bitch…” He began to tremble. “How long were you gonna keep me in the dark?” (Y/n) opened her mouth. “Were you ever gonna fucking tell me!? What if I never came here today!? Would you be in the damn grave!?”

“I thought I could survive,” she turned her head away. “There’s a 70% survival rate… I just so happened to be in the 30%. I didn’t want to tell you that I lost. I know how badly you hate it when you lose and the news… The news that you were gonna lose me wasn’t gonna go over well.” (Y/n) remained calm throughout all this. Not like she had the energy to fight him, but she’s long accepted her fate. Everyday, she lives knowing it could be her last. She doesn’t want to say goodbye when she doesn’t want to leave yet. Could you blame her? Most people live to reach adulthood yet she’s just a few years off…

(Y/n) wasn’t wrong. She had to mention how Bakugou was soon to lose the most precious girl to him and now he can’t stay mad at her. (Y/n) was knowingly keeping him in the dark to help him out. “I fucking love you bitch…” Bakugou swallowed the lump in his throat yet it went absolutely nowhere. “I always have…”

“A bit late for confessions,” (Y/n) snickered.

“You loved me the same way though… Right?” Bakugou needed the words his heart desired.

“That’s why I never engaged,” (Y/n) too was beginning to cry. “I wanted to call you boyfriend for years… I didn’t wanna get so attached to someone just to leave the next day.”

“I feel the opposite,” Bakugou sighed. “I would’ve felt better knowing you died feeling your absolute best.”

“I’m happy enough getting my feelings out now in person instead of…” (Y/n) trailed off with a sigh and pointed at a decorative box in the corner of the room. It was a plastic bin covered in doodles and such where about a dozen envelopes lying within a jumbled mess of pens and markers. “I wrote letters to every person I loved. All my feelings about you and the memories we shared are in that letter. You can read it now if you want-”

“I’ll read it when you’re gone,” Bakugou admits. “It’s intended for when you’re not here… I can wait.” The male approached his lover’s bedside and knelt down. “I’m not leaving you until you take your last breath (Y/n),” he smirked. “Payback for not letting me know sooner.”

“Even in death… I’ll still be with you.”

(Y/n) passed two days later. Bakugou wasn’t exactly taking everything well. Magically he’s supposed to go about life without his soulmate yet it’s (Y/n)’s words that kept him going. Even in death, I’ll still be with you. Are the dead really ever gone? Bakugou knew for a fact that they aren’t. Even with (Y/n) gone, he always felt her presence stick around wherever he went. Then came the funeral. Bakugou has still yet to open (Y/n)’s letter as it lies within his hands. The burial is in a few days but… Everyone suggested that he speaks at the funeral since she meant the most to him as he did to her. Bakugou never planned on speaking. Midoriya of all people motivated him to accept the task. To read his letter openly for everyone to hear and everyone else who received letters would do the same.

Bakugou stood on the podium, his fingers ripped the yellowed envelope to pull the contents from within. “I knew you weren’t gonna read this letter Bakugou,” the blonde spoke with great offense on his end. “On the other hand, I knew Midoriya would talk you into it,” and yet, even in death (Y/n) guessed right on the nose. “You’ve been part of my life since I could remember and you’re the last person I thought of when I closed my eyes for the very last time… I’m glad I died with you there with me.”
