Bird Cage: Hawks x Reader x Dabi Part 2
Yes, as a forewarning I’ve transformed this Hawks x Reader into a Hawks x Reader x Dabi. I never planned this, but by the time I finished writing the second part Dabi easily fit in as a romantic interest.
Your eyelids were lead as no amount of strength could lift them. Aren’t eyelids weightless in human terms? Why is it so hard to wake up!? At this point, what was even the point of asking such a question? You’ve been shot with a countless amount of bullets since forcefully being admitted into this prison and each time was the same. You pass out. How come nobody else passes out when in contact with these sinful bullets? Does the body take forever to grow an immunity against the anti-quirk serum? Well, if this was the same process as always, might as well jump back into it.
Through sheer willpower alone, you eventually managed to open up your eyes. The room was dim yet all so bright. A spotlight… That bright domed light that hung just above your body blinded you and everything around it was dimmed. This… This was different. Is this just a regular spotlight or heaven? Your tired eyes twitched as they were drawn to the light like an insect and burned with vigorous intensity. Luckily, your questions were answered as the spotlight was redirected elsewhere which gave you the sweet sense of relief.
“It only took you five hours…” A grown male hissed as he came into your line of view. Your eyes were still adjusting to the dark lighting as all you could make out was his form. “What are you, a lightweight? Even Chicken Boy got used to the serum faster than you ever had…” Well, whoever this was, he wasn’t friendly. That much you could figure out just by hearing what he had to say.
Despite being the legal age to drink, twenty, you haven’t dared to touch alcohol just yet. That being, you also don’t have the funds to go out and buy a drink or two with college, a job and bills to pay. When you began to move your jaw to form words, you couldn’t help but think just how strong is that serum? Even your jaw refused to cooperate and any sounds to come out came out as miserable moans. “I.. I can b-barely afford to e-eat as it is…” Your speech slurred horribly. Even then, your body fought to sit up, but couldn’t as something held your body down. That something just so happened to be leather belts that pinned you to a steel examination table.
“No matter,” the male tuts as he fumbled around with a small remote. He had pressed a button that allowed your table to elevate into the form of a chair. At this point, your vision had cleared enough to finally get a rough examination of your captor. He was odd to say the least. He wore a black suit and white tie that flattered his form just right. A navy green coat with a violet fur trimmed hood cloaked his arms and backside. The sleeves were rolled up just enough to expose his forearms but even then not much of his skin was on display. White latex gloves hugged his hands while a bird-like plague mask occupied his face. Once he turned around, his taunting gold eyes bored into your soul. “I’ll be releasing you from your restraints Popsickle… I wish to speak with you,” how straight forward of him.
The man began to fumble with your leather restraints and hissed with annoyance. “Are you Chisaki or… Overhaul?” You began to speak. You didn’t pay any mind to the fact this guy was willingly releasing you from your restraints. “Everyone in the cells warned me about them…”
“They’re the same person,” the man undid your restraints with a long aggravated sigh. “They’re both me… If you cherish your pitiful life, don’t dare call me Chisaki again.”
Overhaul’s threat made its mark, you weren’t taunted by it in the slightest however. Rather, you just took it as a suggestion as he preferred one name over the other. “Fine by me…” You sighed.
Overhaul motioned a glass of water within his hands to you. All you could do was turn your nose up at the offer. No way in hell would you ever trust this guy. He’s taking Hawks’ wings away from him, tore up Dabi’s body, mentally fucked up Tamaki and Hagakure. He’s a horrible man! For all you know, that water could be laced with poison or chemicals. Why else was the water as grey as fog?
“You’re really gonna give me a hard time this early on?” A vein began to pop from Overhaul’s forehead.
“I have no reason to trust you…” You point out without a hint of difficulty.
“I’m your lifeline here… Don’t push your luck,” Overhaul hissed as he offered the water to you one last time. At least, you took it with great hesitation. You didn’t dare drink the contents of the glass. With his hands free, Overhaul crossed his arms. “The more you cooperate with me, the less I’ll torture you down the line. Understand?”
“I’m assuming that’s why Dabi looks like he shouldn’t even be alive…” You allowed your head to hang low. Who’d skin a boy alive for the sake of science? Is this even science? What good does torturing people do?
“Pretty much,” Overhaul shrugged. He really couldn’t care less about Dabi anymore besides the fact he’s his strongest test subject. “Those burns... He did that to himself. His quirk burns his own flesh clean off.”
That’s a fucked up quirk… “What are you going to do with me anyways?”
“That all depends on you,” Overhaul suggested. “You may not be able to see them, but there’s cameras in the cell block. I couldn’t help but notice you quickly made a lasting impression on the scum back there. I need followers like you. It makes my job easier.”
“I’m so lost…” It is true. You’ve been imprisoned for the better part of a week. Or, at least you think it's been a week. Everyone has taken a liking to you for the most part. Tamaki doesn’t talk much but he enjoys the extra company. Dabi, on the other hand, acts cold and isolated towards everyone but you can tell he cares about everyone to some extent. Yes, he picks on everyone. Hawks claims he does it in order to spark up a conversation without coming off as the ‘friendly’ type which is honestly a bit cute in your terms. Hawks took the biggest liking to you that much you figured out with Hagakure closely behind him. Hawks loves to share stories with you, hold hands at night and tell you how if he manages to escape this prison he's going to immediately take you on a flight. Hawks… He’s such an untroubled soul who doesn’t deserve to be here.
“My men, Chrono and Nemoto, they’re the ones who give you and your friends bullets everyday,” Those guys in the white and black robes… “They too are quirk users much like yourself. They have quirks that make the capture of other quirk users as easy as possible. Because they’re willingly working for me, I don’t experiment with them. Now you… Your quirk is trash. I need your connection to the rest of the prisoners. Keep the morale up, make them more cooperative. Work with me and you can escape your fate much similar to theirs.”
“I thought you were trying to get rid of quirks,” you hissed. Talk about a hypocrite.
“Oh, I am,” Overhaul agreed. “Sometimes in order to get ahead of everyone else you need to break your own rules. While I will eventually destroy quirks for good, I’ll work with a lucky few for now.”
“Makes sense,” you too agreed with his reason. “I decline your offer though. Your men treat the prisoners horribly. I could never treat them like you are…”
“You’d take over for their care,” Overhaul growled as you’re one dense piece of shit. That literally means you can treat your peers like royalty if you fucking wanted to!!! “That’s literally the job I offered to you. How dense are you?”
“Still… No,” not in a million years would you willingly treat your peers in such a horrible manner even if it means you get to treat them better. You still can’t persuade yourself to become the bully in this situation.
“Tch… Fine,” Overhaul tuts. “Let’s get started on the first test shall we?”
No more than an hour later, Chrono had taken you back to your cell where you were pale and unconscious. Your arms were littered in deep black bruised and heavily padded bandages. Blood loss… Hawks recalls that with everyone who’s entered a cell in this hall, their first test wasn’t exactly a test but rather Chisaki would take as much blood from your body as possible without killing the test subject so that he can start conducting tests with his newly collected blood samples. However, Chisaki never went this far when it came to extracting blood, no more than a pint or two.
“Bitch was offered a job and she turned his greedy ass down,” Dabi snickered as he approached the front of his cell and watched as Chrono lied you down upon the singular bunk. He knew better than anyone that you were offered a job and Chisaki took his anger out on you just for declining. Dabi too was a victim to such. His quirk was so powerful Chisaki too offered him a place in his workforce but of course you know what happened afterwards. Dabi now respects you more than everyone else in his cell block for not caving into greed.
“She’s too nice to join Chisaki,” Hawks began to smile cheerfully only to remember that you were lying half dead in your cell at the moment. “Hagakure… Is she looking okay?” The winged man stuck his head through the bars of his cell to get a good look for himself. You’re dead asleep that much he can tell.
Hagakure was afraid that you were a corpse as you lied so still. Your chest didn’t rise or lower, no involuntary movements, no sounds. Her ghostly hand brushed you lightly only to find you were stone cold. “GAH SHE’S DEAD!!!” The girl screamed bloody murder and kept her distance as she pulled a Tamaki and got aquainted with the cinderblock walls.
“She could be in shock,” Dabi suggested as he spoke from experience. He’d be more concerned but it’s not like he could help you in any way. “When it happened to me the first time I was out for days…”
“M-M-Maybe I can help,” Tamaki shyly waved a hand at his male neighbors with his mouth all scrunched up and sweat beading on his forehead. One thing that everyone caught onto quickly was that Tamaki had an extremely high metabolism as well as immune system. The anti-quirk serum never lasts long within his body. One of his hands slowly morphed into that of a long brown slimy electric eel that gave off small sparks of electric charge.
“I fucking hate fish! Yet that was what they fucking fed us for breakfast…” Dabi wretched. He knew there was something odd about the meal he had today. If only he used Hawks’ tactics when it came to learning what the contents of the meals held and waited for Tamaki to take the first bite of the meal he would’ve known to completely avoid the meal as a whole.
Despite that comment, Tamaki approached the window that his cell shared with yours and allowed his eel arm to elongate until the creature caressed one of your arms. Upon mental command, the eel shocked your body. Your body jolted in response as well as a pained cry to leak your throat. “She’s alive… Barely,” Tamaki shrunk back into his cell. He’s relieved that you aren’t dead or else he’d mentally shut down for the next week with anxiety over touching a corpse.
“Thanks Tamaki,” Hawks frowned. He wanted to help comfort you right now in this time of need but of course these stupid titanium bars separated himself from you. Something within Hawks broke. Never in a million years did he think Chisaki would hurt you as badly as he had. No man should hurt a girl like that. Even Chisaki barely touches Hagakure but what made you any different?
Luckily for him, Chrono and Nemoto were back in the cell block before they even knew it. They were prepared to take Dabi in for testing as they had guns and handcuffs at the ready. Of course, Hawks had ideas of his own. “I’ll go first today!” Hawks waved a hand outside of his cell as he volunteered to undergo torture. “Can I can I?!”
“Come on,” Chrono went ahead and opened up Hawks’ cell. Hawks was the only prisoner here who doesn’t fight the guards therefore they never take extra safety precautions when escorting him to the lab.
Upon arriving, Overhaul rolled his eyes. “I thought I asked for Dabi…” If anything, Overhaul would’ve preferred anyone but Hawks right now. Hawks’ cheerful attitude is almost always too much for him and tries to avoid looking into Hawks as much as he can.
“Nope,” Hawks cracked his knuckles and fanned out his wings. “I see you treated (Y/n) like shit as you always do,” his cocky smile faded as Hawks’ eyes went dark. “That’s where I draw the damn line… You’ve mistreated one too many people and she’s your last.”
-----
Not so much of a surprise, or to Dabi at least, but you awoke more than a day later disorientated and half ready to pass out once again. Hagakure ran over to your aid and helped you into a sitting position. Tamaki heard the shuffle of her feet and knew that must’ve meant news. The ravenette peeked his head into the window. Dabi smirked as the sight was a rarity indeed. “Enjoy your nap princess?” The ravenette teased.
“Can I curl up and die?” You groaned.
“Can I?” Tamaki whimpered with delight.
“Tell us (Y/n)... What’d the big man offer ya?” Dabi had the right to be curious. Chisaki had the intent to kill you or else he hadn’t stolen as much blood as he did.
“Oh that…” You had to think of what exactly Dabi was referring to then it hit you. “He wanted me to take over the duty of watching over you all.”
“Why didn’t you accept?” Hagakure whimpered as she shook you violently.
“Chrono and Nemoto are the worst…” Tamaki piped in.
“Yeah!” Hagakure cheered. “I’d rather have you watching over us than them!”
“It didn’t feel right,” you stated your opinion. “Overhaul said that he wanted me to take the job since you all like me. He said something about if I took the job you’d all be more cooperative with him or something along those lines. Even then… I don’t want to work for the guy imprisoning you all here.”
“Still!!! I’d rather be watched over you than those two meanies!!!” Hagakure began to cry.
“I agree,” Tamaki voiced his opinion weakly. “I still respect your decision though.”
“Fuck off you stupid teenagers!” Dabi snapped at Hagakure and Tamaki. “She was thinking about us, you selfish pigs. I too would’ve made the same decision.”
“Thanks,” Dabi sounds like a sweetheart deep down. Speaking of sweetheart, why’s Hawks’ cell empty? “Where’s Hawks?” Something deep down wasn’t settling right with you. Something must be wrong.
“He jumped ship,” Dabi tuts.
Your body went stiff. “What?!”
“Bird Brain attacked Chisaki yesterday because he didn’t like what happened to you and hasn’t come back since,” Dabi wouldn’t be surprised if Hawks kicked the bucket. Like everyone in this cell block, they’re never away from their cell longer than an hour or two. Any longer, that means one of three things: Hawks either managed to escape this shit hole, died or lost his quirk for good meaning he was set free. The easiest thing to assume is that Hawks’ never coming back.
“He…” You began to hyperventilate. “Hawks is dead because of me..” Tears began to burn at the corners of your eyes. One of the best men you’ve ever met is now looking down on you from the sky all because of you.
This sight was sickening, “don’t fucking cry,” Dabi wretched. “Hawks attacked that bastard because he cares about you! Be thankful for fucks sake! He’s been cooperating with Chisaki lately to extend the time that his wings have left and he died or last his wings for your sake. Don’t take his damn sacrifice in vain.”
“Dabi,” and just like that, your tears didn’t want to come out anymore. You’re not sure if its because you’re afraid of Dabi or because you really shouldn’t take Hawks’ sacrifice in vain. Since… Since when did Dabi care so much about Hawks let alone you? “Even though I haven’t known Hawks for long, he’s one of the best men I’ve ever met. I’m honored that he did what he did just for me. I’ll live… For him. Maybe take a few notes off you as well,” Seriously, and here you thought Hawks was the one looking after everyone but instead it was Dabi all along.
“Yeah,” Dabi spoke sarcastically. “Unless you want to look like my ugly ass, don’t do anything I’d do.”
“You’re not ugly,” you sat forward in your spot. “I’d say it’s more unique than anything.”
“Yeah, no, I’m still butt ass ugly.”
From that day on, everything seemed to calm down. Yes, it was odd living without Hawks’ childish mannerisms. In fact, without him, the morale was at it’s all time low. Hagakure rarely spoke, Tamaki never would leave his ‘corner,’ and Dabi, well, he’s the only one who wasn’t feeling down. Dabi was more open to conversations and never hung out at the back of his cell anymore unless it was bedtime. Everyone knows that Dabi was offered to work with Chisaki, yet nobody knows why he turned down the offer. You never did ask why he wasn’t working for Chisaki and you think he likes it that way.
You began making yourself a little tally board to keep track of the time you’ve spent in prison. On day eleven, that’s when the cell block was met with a groundbreaking surprise. Hawks. He was back from the dead or rather, he was about to join them. Chrono and Nemoto both helped each other drag Hawks back to his cell and the sight wasn’t pretty. Hawks’ wings were destroyed. No feathers remained of them except for the smaller feathers that lined his bones. Hawks’ skin too was no longer flawless as he was sickly pale, beaten to a pulp and was in dire need of a cleaning as blood stained his skin.
The way those two guards just threw him on the ground make your entire heart shatter. “Hawks!” You cried.
“He’s on his deathbed (Y/n)! Crying won’t help!” Dabi snapped in a bind rage. “It happens to everyone who goes against Chisaki. Take my word on that. Don’t make me give specifics…” There’s reasons why Dabi hasn’t outright fought Chisaki yet. Every person to go against Chisaki had no choice but to face death and Dabi has lost one too many people to such.
“Fuck off Dabi,” you glared at whom you thought was your friend. “I’m gonna save Hawks and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
“Don’t tell me…” Dabi couldn’t believe you were going to play Chisaki’s games. “Don’t jump into things (Y/n). Don’t give yourself to Chisaki just yet. It’s possible that Hawks can heal on his own. Birds heal fast you know…” This boy was determined to talk you out of this decision but of course he knew deep down that your mind was set.
“At least then I can end most of the torture…” You turned the opposite direction of Dabi and watched as the men in black and white made their way down the cell block. “Chrono!” You called. He stopped dead in his tracks. “Yeah you Chrono! Take me to Overhaul!”
And it was in that split second you felt doubt…
If I give in and work under Chisaki, I can get Hawks the medical attention that he needs. What if Dabi was right though? Birds heal fast. Hawks could heal perfectly on his own. If I give myself to Chisaki, I could regret that decision forever. If I don’t give myself to Chisaki, I may just regret leaving Hawks to potentially die. Should I side with Dabi and do the right thing or ignore everything and live a life in regret but Hawks is alive and well?
That’s right. I have an optional Dabi and Hawks ending on the way!!! Who would you side with?
