Bird Cage: Hawks x Reader x Dabi Part 1

So, fair warning, since Hawks isn't animated in the anime yet (However he is in the most recent MHA end credits theme) I walked into this a little bit blind. I did read his appearances in the manga multiple times and read fanfics to get a good idea of how others depicted him but of course it's one thing to read a personality versus watching one acted out. Therefore, went my own direction with this.

This is an alternate AU or whatever it's called. Quirks are uncommon and therefore heroes don't exist yet.

There's many things in life that make no sense to you as of this day and age. Actually, ever since you've become of adult age, compared to before nothing makes a single ounce of sense. Well, did you know that having an imagination was considered a crime? Rather, having an imagination wasn't illegal but having one could lead to dire consequences. Years ago, you could find hundreds of books, tv shows, movies, anime and toys depicting humans or otherworldly creatures with supernatural abilities. The potential of their powers were limitless! They could possess the power to manipulate water, exhale fire from your lungs, lift more than the strongest man on earth and much more. Really, there was a power for just about anything and only your imagination could set the limits. The depressing part of all this was that as of now, the very mention of superhumans for personal enjoyment had died out as fiction became reality.

You'd think that fiction entering reality would be a hot gossip! Superheroes, cool abilities, new strives in technology and more. In actuality, supernatural abilities are feared above all else. The second the average human isn't the strongest being on earth, everyone will begin to scramble. Supernatural abilities are called Quirks. Quirks differentiate the normal from the abnormal. Through extensive research, scientists have figured out that Quirks are anomalies in DNA that occur in those who were born within generation Z. Sadly, you've had to say goodbye to countless friends over the years as they too have gained a quirk. The part that confuses you the most however is how nobody questions what happened to those who had quirks. They're silenced immediately and dropped off the face of the earth. Now, everybody's number one fear and wish is that they never gain a quirk of their own...

Your fear became a reality not even twenty four hours ago...

It was the dead of night on a chilly fall day. Like most people at three in the morning, you were fast asleep. Or, sound asleep until that dreaded bodily response told you that it was time for a bathroom break. To have to break away from the warmth of the bed, you moved a heavy arm. Your sweltering body was released from the bed covers to clash with the cold. Being half asleep, you didn't think much of the lack of feelings in your lower half until you fell flat onto the cold wooden floor. Thinking more into the subject, it was as if the existence of your legs weren't a thing anymore.

Just my damn luck, that's all you could think. Who can't wake up enough to make a small trip to the bathroom. That was, until you couldn't stand up. Why not? It wasn't until you finally got a good look at the big picture that everything came into place. Your eyes shrunk, petrified, your lower half wasn't where it belonged but rather it was slowly malforming into a pile of guttural sludge that dribbled off the bed to trail onto the floor where you lied. There was nothing you could do but scream, to cry, to curse your existence. Your roommates entered the room in a frenzy! They dreaded the thought of you potentially being murdered on the spot, only to come face to face with this not as horrible but still grim discovery.

"Help me... Please... Help me..." The tears streamed down your face to collect upon the wooden flooring below. Before you knew it, your arms too were beginning to liquify and you could no longer hold up your own weight but to instead accept fate and lie stiff as a board where you so happened to lie.

Sadly, your roommates couldn't bring themselves to muster up the courage in order to comfort you let alone help in this time of need. They stared at your melting body, frozen, before leaving with tears in their eyes as they closed your bedroom door. Not even an hour later, mysterious men flooded your room. They all wore dark colors, a haunting bird like mask occupied their faces. One of them pulled a gun on you and that's when your consciousness fled. The next morning, maybe even the next few hours to come, all track of time was lost. You could only recall awakening within a cinder block cell of sorts. A loud humming noise flooded the cell, much like the hum you'd get from older light fixtures, but you could deal with the annoyance as your body was once again back to normal. Minus the weird scratch on your shoulder. It looks as though a bee stung you or something as it was an odd indentation that bled for quite some time.

"Good morning!" A man sang. You gasped, all to begin your search of the surroundings for the source of the call. You found out soon enough that directly across from your cell was a blonde man sitting on the floor within a cell of his own. Much like yourself, he was new to adulthood although he admittedly came off to look older than you by a few good years, not by many, maybe at most a year or three. One detail that stuck out about him, besides his drop dead good looks, was the pair of elegant crimson wings folded upon themselves that upon his back. His gentle smile was putting you at ease despite the setting.

Maybe, talking to him would get you a few answers. He too is a prisoner wherever this place is. "Morning," you tucked a strand of your bed head behind your ear. Why does it feel so weird talking to such an angel? Is he an angel? He surely has good looks and the wings to match the title. "Where are we?"

"Cut right to the chase why don't you," the man snickered as he sat forward within his spot on the floor. "Why not start with introductions? It's been a good month or two since the last newcomer."

"Sorry," you apologized. This guy is rather friendly. "I'm (Y/n)."

"I'm Keigo," the man hummed with a cute tilt of his head. His feathery blonde locks swayed with the action. "Nobody calls me by my given name anymore so just call me Hawks. I like it more anyways."

"Hawks? Where did Hawks come from? That sounds nothing like your name." Unless it's a nickname or has something to do with his middle name? Anything is a possibility really.

"Here, we get nicknames based on our quirks," Hawks stood up, fanning out his wings the best he could before they touched the walls of his cell. That's when you noticed, crimson feathers littered the floor and stuck out within the wall in places like daggers. "Hawk wings therefore I'm Hawks."

"Sorry but... I'm not sure what my quirk is..." You frowned. Is melting even a quirk? Who wants to self melt? Oh right, you never wanted a quirk in the first place...

"Oh," Hawks jumped at that statement with bright eyes. "They were calling you Popsickle when they brought you in. What, do you melt or something?"

"Oh... Yeah I guess..."

"Could be like Tamaki next door," Hawks snickered again as he pointed to the cell next door to your own with his thumb.

"Tamaki?" You turned towards the wall of your cell. Above the bed was a small barred window. You approached said window and found that there was a raven haired boy sitting within the corner of his cell. Much like Hawks, he had an impressive set of golden wings on his back and tallon bird feet. From where you stood, you could just barely make out how his mouth was all scrunched up and his eyes strained with sadness.

Hawks cupped his hands around his mouth, "They call him Chicken Boy. Do him a favor and call him Tamaki. His self esteem isn't the best and he doesn't really like the nickname."

"Of course," you'd hate to be called Chicken Boy, or girl. That's so wrong. "Are you two related?"

"Definitely not!" Hawks tilted his head to the side giving you an oddly upset and disappointed glare.

"Oh..." Everything became awkward. "I sort of assumed since you both have wings."

"I have bird wings," Hawks emphasized how he had bird wings with a loud ruffle of his feathers. "Tamaki only has wings because he becomes whatever animal he eats. Piece of advice, let him eat the food before us! Half of the time we can't tell what crap the jerks here are feeding us," you'd be lying if you said that wasn't alarming. Tamaki is the one taking the shots when it comes to the food around here. Well, at least the last meal they ate was presumably chicken, maybe turkey. Could've been something bad like horse or dog...

"Will you answer my questions now?" You peeled yourself from the window in the wall as you figured Tamaki didn't want to be watched any longer than necessary.

"Oh, yeah. Go ahead," Hawks' eyes enlarged with the sudden question.

"What is this place? Why am I here?" You lied a hand upon your chest as the idea of sitting within a prison like setting slowly became uncomforting. Even your heart's pace was beginning to quicken just thinking of the torture that place could hold. To make matters even worse, your cell had just about everything from a shower, minus the shower curtain, and a toilet. There's no privacy here and yet you have male neighbors. Actually, Hawks doesn't look like he'd be the guy to peep in on another girl. Then again, you're only assuming things. "Why are you here? You seem like a good guy." Tamaki too, he looks like a sweet innocent teenager.

"To be fair," Hawks hummed as he scratched his stubbly chin. "I don't know where we are."

"That sucks..."

"I just know we're here because we have quirks. Everyone who's lived in this hall has become a test monkey," Hawks held out one of his arms. It was bruised horribly from wrist to inner elbow in all shades of black and blue. "Been here the longest, too long, but they can't break me," Hawks was smiling from ear to ear. "I've seen people come and go. If you leave, it's one of two things, or maybe three things depending on how lucky you are."

"What would those three things be?" You wanted out of here as soon as possible. You never want to see the day you become a test subject.

"The first is quite obvious," Hawks regrets to inform you.

"Death?"

"Yeah," Hawks sighed. He could read your emotions with ease just with a simple glance "Another way you can check out of here is if that Chisaki guy can get rid of your quirk for good. Half of the time he isn't successful, so he does more tests," suddenly, Hawks began to frown as he began to turn towards one side of his cell. You knew he had neighboring cells much like your own, but didn't notice as another body occupied it. All you saw was a black figure though the poor lighting. "Don't get your hopes up though (Y/n)... I might've been here the longest, but he's been through the most.

"Fuck off Bird Brain..." The male in Hawks' neighboring cell snapped as he slowly approached the cell door. You were petrified on the spot once again as his appearance was terrifying. His skin, it was patchwork of pale to scarred purple tissue. Very little of his perfect skin remained, but the only thing keeping him together was staples of sterling silver. "I'm waiting for the day I can burn Chisaki to the ground..." The boy vowed he'll end the leader of this quirk experimentation ring.

"The only thing I can say is..." Hawks looked at Dabi apologetically. "The cure is different for everyone."

"That's still horrible!" You raised your voice, shocking everyone within your proximity. "Quirks or not, it's not like we're hurting anybody with our quirks. Why can't we go back to living like we used to?"

"Because... Chisaki thinks of quirks like a disease. He wants to destroy them all," spoke a depressed female directly off to your left.

You turned to the source, only to find nobody there. Rather, to say nobody was there was a misconception as a pair of feminine clothing, a stained pink tank top and shorts, was floating within the air. "Wh-Who? What?" Your shaking fingertips reached out to graze the invisible form that wore the clothing.

"I'm Hagakure... I'm invisible," her voice no doubtedly showed evidence of depression. "Do you mind if I hug you? I haven't had a roommate since coming here..."

"I'm so sorry..." You began to open up your arms.

"Thank you!!!" The girl latched onto you as she wept into your shoulder.

Hagakure's broken cries ripped at your heartstrings. "How many of us are there?" Is everyone in this cell block a victim of torture?

"Just us five including you," Hawks took a seat upon the floor of his cell with his head to rest upon one knee. "There used to be more... Most died... Some of them escaped on their own. Thing is... I was caught doing what I loved most... Flying," Hawks began to scratch the back of his neck as he recalled the good old days when he could fly above the city without a worry in the world. Air flowing freely through his hair, the whip of the wind against his skin, freedom. That's what he missed. "I miss flying. I loved the freedom of being able to go wherever and whenever you want without anyone getting in your way."

"Flying is that great huh?" You'd honestly kill to experience true flight even just once. "How'd you get caught though?"

"One of Overhaul's men shot me out of the sky with one of his quirk negating bullets..." That day was when Hawks' true fears became that of reality. Hawks became that of a true bird; Locked up within a cage. Something had pierced him in the back of his neck just as he was about to take to the skies. Crimson began to seep down his neck as he soon grew lightheaded. Hawks recalls falling off the top of that building, unable to move his wings, expecting death but woke up here behind concrete walls.

"B-Bullets!?" You reached for your shoulder. Pulling down on the fabric that made up your neck hole. There, your mysterious bloody wound was sat on display for everyone to view.

"You must've gotten hit too," Hawks held up one of his hands beyond the bars that made up the front of his cell. "Overhaul has bullets you see. When shot into a victim it can temporarily negate quirks. They aren't permanent, but they're awful close to brewing up a permanent serum. I want to leave this place before I lose my wings forever..." Upon mentioning said fact, a few feathers fell off of Hawks' wings to collect upon the floor with the feathers of previous moltings. The tests, the experiments, they're taking Hawks' wings away little by little.

"How long have your feathers been falling out?" You couldn't help but ask.

"Really bad as of last week," Hawks mentions before picking up his most recent feather and poked it out from beyond the bars of his cage. The tip of the crimson feather reached your cage and all you could do was watch how it shimmered within the moon's light. "Have one of them... Consider it a good luck charm from me to you."

"Oh Hawks..." You couldn't decline this blonde angel's offer and took the feather into your possession. It was a feather necessary for flight. You could tell as it was a long one and the 'bone' of the feather was hollow with shallow blood vessels that were dead as of now. Your hand grazed the slick surface and you were astonished as the very tip was sharp and could be considered deadly.

"A good luck charm AND a weapon," Hawks snickered. "My feathers can be used like a sword. Thank me later."

"You're so sweet..." Why is Hawks so oddly charming?

"And you're the most beautiful girl I've seen," Hawks began to smirk. "Of course, nobody can be more beautiful than my sweetheart Hagakure," the boy winked at the princess of invisibility. You could see a hue of pink on her invisible cheeks which was odd. As of now, you can't help but love Hawks even more. All he wants to do is keep everyone's morale up. Complementing Hagakure despite how nobody knows what she truly looks like, calling Tamaki by his preferred name, looking after Dabi and now he's trying to make sure you feel safe. What a man.

Clink! Clang!

Was the sound of the locking mechanism to a door. Everyone had their heads locked on the direction of the sound. "Get to bed everyone..." Tamaki begged as he slowly slid out of view beneath his side of the window. You had no idea that he even was at the shared window in the first place.

Hawks hadn't budged. "I suggest you pretend to sleep. They'll leave you alone for the most part if you are."

"I'm scared to death though..." You began to quiver in fear. "I don't want them to hurt me."

"I'm never too far," the blonde reassured as he desperately reached out towards your cell the best he could manage. You too reached out as he took you by the hand. "I'll always be here for you."

"But-"

"You also have everyone here!" Hawks exclaimed as his hold on you was tight and reassuring. "They're always looking after one another and I'll do the same for you. Now, get to sleep. I'll be here when you wake up."

"Thanks," you hurried over to the bed and lied down. Hagakure squeezed herself in as the bed was a twin. Dabi too had fled to the back of his cell with Hawks to remain sitting upright on the floor within his cell. Only when everyone settled on their bunks, minus the daring Hawks, did your captors finally enter the cell block.

"You really need to label which key is which..." A male complained as you then heard the jingle of a key ring.

"They were labeled at one point," the opposite male sighed in return. "Doesn't help that Chicken Boy ate the original key. I haven't had time to label the new one," their footsteps were drawing near as you found it comical that Tamaki ate a key of all things, you found it difficult to stop laughing on the inside.

"Morning assholes!" Hawks greeted the men merrily as they approached his cell. You slightly peek your eye open as the men were dressed in robes of black and white.

"Got tired of the wake up calls?" The man in white joked around.

"Nah," Hawks shook his head. "Invisible Girl showered a little while ago. I got quite a show!"

"Ha ha..." the one in black laughed sarcastically.

"Has Popsickle woken up yet?" The man in white snapped.

"Nope," Hawks lied on your behalf with a great big laugh. "Been waiting for her to wake up for a while now. I was hoping she smuggled in a few chicken nuggets. College students... Yeah, always working in fast food to pay the bills." Yet somehow Hawks knew for a fact you were a college student who indeed worked in fast food to pay for your tuition.

"Can you just shut up?" The man in white turned to your cell. Your eyes forced themselves to close. You were so digested into their conversation that you didn't expect him to shift his attention so quickly. He more than likely saw that you were awake. Everything was over. Please don't enter the cell, that's all you want right now.

"She's awake..." The man in black commented.

"Shit..." Hawks cursed under his breath.

"Not like it matters," the man in white pulled out a gun but debated on loading it or not. "Overhaul isn't awake yet so it's not like he needs her just yet. My apologies though... Non-mutant quirk users get bullets on a timely basis," the man growled as you continued to ignore him and pretend to sleep. "You aren't asleep, cut it with the act."

"Cut it (Y/n)... Everything will be fine," Hawks sadly called out to you.

You obediently forced yourself to wake and sat up on the bed. "Does it hurt?" Your voice quivered.

"How am I supposed to know?" He replied in a cold manner.

"If they let you self administer, it's nothing more than being poked with a needle," Hawks was trying his best to keep you as calm as possible and you were mighty grateful that he was there or else you'd be cowering in a corner crying like a baby.

"Will you?" You asked of the man in white. "Can I do it myself?"

"Destroy it and you'll be drinking your next few meals through a straw," the man in white made his threat as the man in black handed you a small bullet in a red casing. It had a small needle on the end much like Hawks said it would.

The men continued on as one approached Tamaki's cell and the other to Dabi's. Dabi was giving them a hard time as he refused to approach the front of the cell and ultimately ended up being shot by said gun due to his stubbornness. The men ultimately came back to your cell. "Well, you did it yet?" The one in black retorts.

"No... Sorry," you pressed the needle of the bullet into your soft flesh. The injection truly felt like nothing, but the after effects were taking its toll on you. The serum or whatever made the bullets do their job was coursing through your veins and the world began to darkness little by little. The two men were satisfied and left the cell block. You couldn't piece together what was happening at all before Hawks watched as you dove through to the front of your cell and desperately reached for him "H-Hawks..." You weakly called.

Hawks too reached out from his cell and lied his hand atop yours. "I'm here..." He assured you before he saw your eyelids slowly lower as you entered yet another deep slumber.

Part 2 is on the way!!!
