Bird Cage: Dabi Ending
Despite how almost everyone wanted the Hawks Ending, I decided to write this one first because why the F not? And sorry if this isn't that good. My mind turned to mush upon writing the second half to this and I think I need to take another hiatus...
A man you’ve come to hate. He’s a man dressed in white with grey hair that took the form of arrows at the ends. Chrono was his name and he was escorting you to Chisaki’s lab at your request. That decision came from a half baked thought you regret executing as there was no going back now…
It was sad to say, but you had succumbed to Chisaki’s influence. It was a gut wrenching decision as you had to pick and choose who you wanted to stick with until the very end. With Hawks, you saw an angel that’d stick with you until the very end. He’s lying half dead within his cell and only if Chisaki stays to his word, working beneath means you could give him the medical attention he needs to survive. Dabi on the other hand, he’s a broken soul who’s attached himself to you and doesn’t want to say goodbye. With this job, you’d still be able to see and communicate with Dabi but you knew what’d happen once he learns of it. You’d be on his kill list for sure. That’s why… That’s why you picked this job for Dabi’s sake, not Hawks. Why would you choose a job to lose a friend? Because you weren’t.
At first, you accepted Chisaki’s position as the prisoner’s caretaker to give Hawks the medical attention he needs. That was until Chisaki and Chrono decided to give you a tour of the facility and delivered you a list of your new privileges and the supplies at your disposal. You took notice of a few things on your tour: Chisaki had a surprisingly small workforce. You thought this place would be exactly like a real prison with guards all over the place but nope. All of Chisaki’s followers were men and quirk users too. They’re dangerous individuals who are almost always out in the city searching for quirk users intended for Chisaki’s sick experiments. Another thing you noticed was that security was rather alarming. There were cameras every which way you turned. The last thing you took a mental note on was how Chisaki rarely leaves his lab and if he does you’d find him in his private quarters or the bathroom. That’s when you realized that this job was a one way ticket to escape and an easy one too.
That’s what you meant when you said that you chose this job for Dabi’s sake. You were going to break him out, everyone out.
In the meantime, you gave Hawks the bare minimum when it came to treating his injuries. You would’ve given him everything he needs, but apparently Chisaki thought you were asking for too much, given your previous request to improve the quality of the prisoners diets, and declined anything further than a first aid kit.
In fact, you were going to treat Hawks’ injuries right now.
With the open and close of the one and only entrance to the cell block, Tamaki watched it like a hawk. His eyes were narrowed in on the door like a predator scoping out its prey. With you missing, he’s been on edge. Until, he figured out that the visitor was in fact you, alone. Tamaki couldn’t believe his eyes, if you’re walking around the facility freely, it only meant one thing. “(Y/n)? You’re… You’re working for them now?” Tamaki was both thrilled yet upset with this turn of events. Tamaki was sure that you’d never give into Chisaki just like how Hawks’ claimed but his assumptions were proven incorrect.
You stood before Tamaki's cell, finally able to see the boy from head to toe unlike all those times in the cell. Back then, you could only see the boy from the neck up thanks to the window you both share. Tamaki had a hunched posture as to hide his face, hands that clutched to the collar of his shirt. A long spotted tail swayed at Tamaki’s behind and long bull horns perched just above his ears. As adorable as he looked, you had to sway him with an apologetic smile. “I thought you wanted me to work for Overhaul,” that’s if you could recall correctly.
“Well… Yes,” Tamaki’s mouth scrunched up. He never intended for you to take his request seriously. “Are you gonna treat us better than Chrono?”
“I promise,” you waved your first aid kit before Tamaki’s face. The boy had completely forgotten that medi-kits even existed. “If you promise not to fight me, would you like to come out for a little while? I think I’m gonna need some help with Hawks.”
“I…” Tamaki nervously moaned out in despair. “I have… I have no reason to fight you.”
“Then come on out,” you jingled the large key ring in search of Tamaki’s cell key. Apparently, at one point there was a master key but Tamaki ate it to rebel against his captors. You’ve known about that stunt for a while, but now you understand why Chrono and Nemoto are so irritable. You did eventually find the key labeled ‘Cell #6’ which was in fact Tamaki’s and opened up his cell. The shock of being able to run free, even if it just meant this cell block, overwhelmed the boy as he took one step out of his cell and felt as free as a bird in doing so. “Meet me in Hawks’ cell once you’ve stretched out for a bit,” you left Tamaki to his own devices as you unlocked Hawks’ cell which was practically across the way from his. You’re glad that you’re able to treat Hawks’ wounds, but something about being right next door to Dabi’s cell had your nerves in a frenzy. What’s even more nerve racking was the fact that Dabi has yet to say anything to you and you knew he was going to explode when that time comes.
Hawks was just barely conscious at the time you opened his cell. The man had no idea that it was you and feared he’d be dragged to the lab again. “(Y/n)?” Hawks was torn with this realization. “Did you really turn yourself over to Chisaki for me? Why would you do that?” Hawks grunted to the pain of his stomach ripping apart just to sit up from the floor. Hawks, even now in his time of need, never expected you to make such a horrible decision. He wasn’t going to admit it, but he has lost much of his respect for you as a person due to your decision.
“It wasn’t just for you,” you knelt down beside the winged wonder. His injuries aren’t as bad as you initially thought yesterday. You really should’ve listened to Dabi then or else you wouldn’t have agreed to work for Chisaki. “I’m working for Overhaul for multiple reasons. All of them are for you guys…”
“Quit calling him Overhaul!” Dabi’s dark taunting voice erupted from his cell. A loud grunt left his lips as you had assumed he punched or kicked one of the walls to his cell.
“Why shouldn’t I call him Overhaul?” You’re only calling him Overhaul because it’s what the man prefers.
“We call him Chisaki as a form of disrespect,” Hawks gave you an apologetic look then turned the opposite direction. “Forget me for now (Y/n). Dabi’s been a mess since your big decision. Go talk to him,” Hawks figured that since he’s been enduring as long as he has, a few more minutes wouldn’t hurt. You got up from the floor, Tamaki came in to treat Hawks’ wounds instead of you which was nice of him. Before you could leave, Hawks snatched you by your pants leg. “Keep your distance from his cage… Trust me.”
“O-Okay…” That warning wasn’t alarming at all. You did follow Hawks’ advice through and through and glad you did. Upon approaching Dabi’s cage, you had to jump back as the demon of blue flames threw himself at the door. His hand of scarred purple flesh snatched and swiped menacingly at your throat while he snarled like a wolf. You were just out of reach, but still too close for comfort. “Dabi… What’s the matter?” Was all you could ask as you hesitantly reached out to hold his hand. This was a new side to Dabi you’ve never seen before.
Dabi took what he could get and smacked your hand away, “I told you to not fucking work for that bastard and look at you now!”
“I did it for everyone here.”
“Yeah right…” He rolled electric blue orbs..
Jerk… “Seriously though, why are you getting mad at me? You wouldn’t be treated like crap if only you accepted Chisaki’s offer to join his team. Out of everyone here, I thought you would be the most likely to accept his offer. He still wants you for crying out loud!” Seriously! What does Dabi have against Chisaki that he hates everything to do with him? You’ve technically done nothing wrong to Dabi to earn his wrath and yet here we are!
“Here we go again…” Tamaki, Hagakure and Hawks all simultaneously shook their heads.
“You’re not wrong, I would work with Chisaki,” Dabi admits with poison laced in his voice.
“Well… Why don’t you?”
“You’re lucky that you’re not like the rest,” Dabi groaned as he stared you dead in the face. “I’ll tell you all about why I hate Chisaki and why I look the way I do,” you nod your head to show Dabi that you’re listening. “At one point or another, we all had families. Me and all of my siblings had quirks and were thrown into here. Notice how none of them are here?” That was all Dabi had to say. You’ve connected the dots with ease in realization that Dabi has suffered the most out of everyone here. He’s lost everything in so little time. Dabi took your silence and averted gaze as you’ve figured out the truth. “Yeah… That’s why I won’t work with that bastard. If he didn’t take my family from me, maybe then I’d work with him but he did so, I will kill him and you better not step in my way.”
Dabi made his point clear. “What were the names of your siblings?” You questioned him on the spot. He clearly cared deeply about them.
“Oh…” Dabi never expected you to ask such a personal question. Nobody here has bothered to ask. Hawks however, didn’t need to know since he’s personally connected with them all at one point in time. “Fuyumi, Natsuo and Shoto… I’m the oldest.”
“I’m sorry,” Dabi lost all of his siblings when he was the oldest. The job as the oldest sibling is to look out for everyone else and he failed.
“Tch, Don’t give me pity,” Dabi tuts. “Don’t you dare hurt me either. The second you do, I’ll kill you.” And this time around, he won’t hesitate unlike today.
“I won’t,” you promise.
In which you kept that promise. For the next two weeks, you persuaded Chrono and Nemoto to deliver bullets until you felt comfortable with the idea of using them against your friends. That day came sooner than expected once Overhaul basically told you to own up to your responsibilities. Not like that was a bad thing. You’ve been carefully timing everything since the second you became the prisoner caretaker from the rise and fall of the sun to when everyone takes a bathroom break. Even Hawks made a somewhat full recovery. His wings have to grow their feathers back, that’s if he can grow them back. It’s all okay though! Hawks says he’s alright as long as they come back eventually.
Today is your first day on bullet duty.
“Heads up everyone,” You gave everyone a wake up call upon entering the cell block. “I… I have a new job…” Your hand shook as you loaded your pistol two bullets in crimson casings. One for Tamaki, one for Dabi. Just holding this weapon felt wrong in its own right. You completely bypassed Tamaki’s cell, despite his being the closest cell to the entrance of the room, and stopped before Dabi’s. Today will either make or break your relationship with the boy riddled in staples and scars.
As expected, Dabi’s eyes flared with rage as you shakily directed your pistol at Dabi’s defenseless form. The man began to grit his teeth, “I thought I told you not to hurt me,” Dabi warned as he slowly stood up from his bed making his intent to kill more profound. “The second you shoot that gun, you’re dead…”
“I’m sorry…” You closed your eyes as your index finger ghosted the trigger. Till finally, you pulled the trigger after much mental persuasion. A red bullet fled from the chamber with a BANG! The dart like tip of the bullet had torn a hole into Dabi’s jacket sleeve as it grazed his arm.
While you did technically miss Dabi, it didn’t stop him from staring at the rip in his sleeve and the crimson seeping from the wound which resulted in him bounding for the front of his cell and trapping your throat within his grasp. “I fucking told you to never hurt me! I don’t care if you missed! You intend to hurt me!” What kept Dabi from strangling you then and there was how your expressions remained bored as if nothing happened at all. “Aren’t you afraid to die?” Dabi kept your throat entrapped within his grasp.
“I’ll give you another bullet before bedtime…” Was all you had to say yet your body hadn’t flinched.
“So you’re just…” The male trailed off as he peered down at his free hand. His fingertips gave way to ghostly blue embers. He’s long forgotten what those flames looked like in all their elegant electric blue glory. The color… It reminds him of his brother. “You missed intentionally…” Dabi couldn’t believe the sight.
“Don’t do anything fishy until after midnight…” You warned your dear friend. “That’s when Chisaki’s asleep and he’s the only one who watches the cameras,” it took a lot of digging, but you’ve figured out that the cameras only capture video, not audio. “Use your quirk to melt through the locking mechanism of your cell, then free everyone else. Use Tamaki’s window to escape and no others. It’s the easiest route to safety.”
“You know everything don’t ya?” Dabi smirked.
“I’ve been watching everyone carefully that’s how I know everything.”
“Well that is your job.”
“A job I love,” The last few weeks watching over everyone and making their lives better one little step at a time truly touched your heart. How Tamaki is one of the sweetest people you’ve ever met and only wants to be reunited with his best friend. Hagakure might be easily spooked but she’d do anything to help another. Hawks isn’t afraid of death and dedicates every waking moment to making sure everyone is happy. Dabi lost everything and all he could ever ask for now is to be loved once again.
A moment to think about the potential escape, Dabi had his questions. “How am I supposed to know it’s past midnight?”
“Listen for me to knock on the door that leads into the cell block, simple as that.”
“You’re coming with us right?” Dabi still refused to release your neck. His eyes demonstrated how desperately he didn’t want to let you go.
You both did and didn’t expect such a question to be directed at you today. You expected the question to pop, but not from Dabi, not in the slightest. “Do you… Do you want me to?” With astonishment to sit in. To answer that question, Dabi released his hold on your neck and moved his hand to the back of your head. You had no idea what was going on! It was the shock of the moment when he began leaning in, both of your heads sandwiched against the bars as he took this moment to kiss you. Dabi was gentle with the way his hand gently supported your head, the other supporting your chin. The kiss itself was oddly satisfying. The odd or rather disturbing part of it was the difference in texture of Dabi’s upper and lower lips. The upper was soft and plush, the lower was dry and rough just like the rest of the lower half of his face. The part you loved the most was that Dabi was kissing you in general. He’s a broken man with little affection to give and yet somehow you earned it.
Dabi parted the kiss with another one of his signature smirks, “Does that answer your question?”
You were fighting off the blush to burn at your cheeks, “I’ll be late but… Yeah… I’m coming with you guys.” And with that, you quickly ran over to Tamaki’s cell and ‘gave’ him his bullet, only to run out as if your life depended on it. What you weren’t aware of wsa the fact that Dabi long saw your blush even before you began to hide it. That spoke much about your character to him.
Hawks was in complete and utter shock after witnessing that display of affection. Kiss and all. He had to break the silence, not because he had questions but he had to address the elephant in the room. “Since when were you two so close!?” The birdman squawked in betrayal and here he thought he had a romantic connection with you. NOPE!
“Since she thought you died Bird Brains!” Dabi chuckled and progressed to pocket that bullet that just barely missed him earlier. He’s saving that sucker for later. Chisaki if he’s given the choice. “Get some shut eye everyone! We’re getting out tonight.”
That knock to signify the fall of a new day had caught the attention of all in the cell block. Everyone had gotten the shut eye that Dabi suggested they should take, everyone except Dabi himself. He was too excited for this moment as he wasted no time getting to work. Dabi was at the front of his cell in that of a split second. The male cupped his scarred hand, blue flames exploded from his palm as he then progressed to melt the lock on his cell. With a SNAP! The door was thrown open and everyone was at the front of their cells in anticipation of their escape. One by one, everyone was freed, and once they were, Dabi and Tamaki worked together to bend the bars of the designated window and succeeded. Only when they were ready to take the leap, you ran in to join them.
“What kept you so long?” Dabi grunted as he helped Hagakure to reach the window.
“Kept watch,” you claimed. “Someone had to make sure nobody was around.”
“Point made,” the boy shrugged. “Now, up you go,” Dabi picked you up suddenly, stuffing you through the window. Tamaki and Hagakure were there to pull you out. Next came Hawks who’s wings made quite a ruckus since he was just barely small enough to fit through the window with Dabi being the very last. Hawks and Tamaki had to hold onto your hips while you were used like a fishing pole and fished him out. Although this was only the tip of the iceberg when it came to the escape, everyone took a moment to appreciate the night sky, the grass, the ground, everything.
Dabi himself was on his hands and knees, entangling his fingers within the overgrown grass with eyes that began to water. “Who knew I’d take grass for granted…”
You lied a hand upon his back, “How long has it been for you?”
“Months!” He exclaimed. “Unlike Tamaki… I didn’t have a window.”
Unlike you, you’ve only been a prisoner for at most a month. To see the grass again wasn’t exactly emotional in your eyes. “Is it as good as you remember?” You wondered.
Dabi nods. “It’s much better…”
The Hawks ending will be here sometime soon.
