Anime Recommendations 4 U Part 2
You guys wanted more anime recommendations for some odd reason. But hey, I’m here to deliver! The recommendations this time around compared to the first are anime I’ve pretty much only watched once or will rewatch certain episodes or seasons BUT still recommend anyways as they deserve love. The higher on the list they are, the more I recommend. Two of the recommendations on the other hand AREN’T anime but they were heavily influenced by Japanese animation and quite a lot of people consider them anime anyways (To be fair, one of the two I’m talking about are getting an anime adaptation this year)
10. Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul takes place in Japan as the existence and threat of Ghouls are on the rise. Ghouls look exactly like humans, except they can only survive on human flesh. Ken Kaneki, a college student with romance on the mind, scores a date with a beautiful intellectual girl named Rize. When their date is done, and Kaneki was thoroughly happy with how the date went, Rize reveals herself to be a bloodthirsty ghoul and Kaneki was her next meal. By chance, Kaneki survives the ghoul attack as Rize attacks him on a dangerous construction site and dies in the meantime. Doctors managed to save Kaneki, by transplanting Rize’s organs into him. Kaneki soon realizes that his body wasn’t the same as before but rather he was slowly becoming a ghoul himself and now he has to adapt into the ghoul lifestyle. This anime isn’t for the faint of heart. Tokyo Ghoul doesn’t hold back from blood, gore and eating disorders! However, if you can get past that, this is a genuinely great anime that I recommend to everyone. Tokyo Ghoul was one of my gateway anime and to this day I still love it to death! Don’t be scared off by the people who claim the anime is drastically different from the manga, it really doesn’t change anything. I’ve watched the anime AND went out of my way to purchase the manga and both are enjoyable in their own ways. Tokyo Ghoul is gory, sadistic, action packed yet it has wholesome moments and romance to top it off. A little bit of everything so to speak. From the animation, the unique plotlines, characters, voice actors and much more I love it all. I’ve cringed, I’ve cried my eyes out like a blubbering baby, I’ve awed, I’ve done everything you can speak of. I’m purposefully holding out on many details though as to not give off spoilers and such. Unless you have a weak stomach, I’ll guarantee you’ll enjoy this as it’s an odd mix of Parasyte: The Maxim and MHA that I never knew I needed in my life. On top of this, if you like voice actors, many MHA voice actors can be found in Tokyo Ghoul. Monoma is Kaneki, Bakugou is Hide, Mineta is Touka, Shigaraki is Nishio, Iida is Tsukiyama, All Might is Oomori/Jason, Midoriya is Hajime, Aizawa is Arima & Tatara, Momo is Hinami’s mother and many more. Again if you have a strong stomach, love action, romance and a good tear jerker then this anime is for you.
9. The Ancient Magus’ Bride
The Ancient Magus’ Bride follows Chise as she sold herself into slavery as she felt abandoned by the world and didn’t want to trouble anyone anymore. Elias Ainsworth, a monstrous mage of unknown race with a gentle heart, buys Chise’s freedom proclaiming that she’ll be his future wife. Elias never forced Chise into an engagement, but with nowhere else to go, Chise chooses to stay with her savior. Elias then gives Chise a home, education and trains her in the ways of a magic. Chise feels treasured by this unknown man as he treats her better than anyone else in her entire life. Well… She is his future wife and he’s her future husband. The Ancient Magus’ Bride is such a beautiful and emotional anime. It managed to make me cry at times just because it is breathtakingly beautiful and it knows how to tug at your heartstrings just right. I highly respect Elias and Chise’s relationship from beginning to end. At first it felt like Stockholm Syndrome, given that Elias literally bought himself a bride, but it really wasn’t the more I delved into it. Their relationship grew through time and respect and we got to see every moment they spent together and it’s not very often that we see romances like this anywhere. Not to forget that I find Elias’ character design to be breathtakingly perfect. He’s clearly a monster, but you can feel that he’s a human at heart. Character development too, high respect! If you like a good fantasy romance anime, then this is for you. OR if you enjoyed Beauty and the Beast, which is the closest recommendation to this that I can give, then you’ll definitely enjoy The Ancient Magus’ Bride.
8. Black Butler
Black Butler takes place in England during the 1880s as Ciel Phantomhive’s family was mysteriously murdered including himself. Sebastian, a demon, offers Ciel another chance at life in order to pursue the Phantomhive’s assailant in exchange for Ciel’s soul once the job is complete. Now the head of the Phantomhive family & company, Ciel goes on adventures with his demon butler, Sebastian, and mansion of oddball staff all the while figuring out the mystery of the Phantomhive’s murderers. DON’T YOU DARE WATCH SEASON 2!!! I’M WARNING YA!!! Once again, another gateway anime for me that I adore and have seen a handful of times. Black Butler has a dark charm to it, but is actually quite soft and fluffy most of the time. You really get to sit down and enjoy all the characters this anime has to offer not to forget that everyone is charming and unique in their own special way. What I especially like about Black Butler is the uniqueness of all the characters and how nearly every episode is something different and that you don’t need prior knowledge to enjoy it. If you like crossdressers, well Ciel pretended to be a girl a few times AND we have a VERY iconic transgendered character: Grell. Oh god I love Grell, he/she always steals the show. If you enjoy a wholesome, comedic mystery anime with a hint of darkness then you’ll wanna give this anime a try. Taking all the comic relief, characters and design into mind, if you enjoyed Ouran High School Host Club then you’ll also enjoy Black Butler.
7. Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun
Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun follows a lovestruck girl named Shiro as she’s so desperately seeking an upperclassman’s affection that she seeks out the resident ghost of her school named Hanako that’s rumored to grant wishes to those who visit the bathroom stall that he resides. When Shiro unfortunately learns that this ‘rumor’ of the girl’s bathroom ghost is true, Hanako refuses to grant her true love as she had nothing to give him of value and that his decision was made for HER greater good. Shiro then goes behind Hanako’s back and steals something from him that grants true love: Mermaid scales. Mermaid scales once consumed by one person then the other will bind their destinies together for eternity. However, Shiro’s love interest never consumed the scale and she became cursed to be a fish. Hanako, being a good natured ghost, consumes a mermaid scale and saves Shiro from her fate. Much to Shiro’s dismay, now she’s forever bound to share her destiny with a toilet bound ghost. Hanako-Kun is literally a perverted Midoriya. THEY SHARE A VOICE ACTOR AND ACT EXTREMELY ALIKE!!! PRECIOUS CINNAMON ROLLS!!! I fell in love with the unique and cutesy art style of this anime not to forget the designs are just one in a million. A sexy spider sensei, a young explosive yet chivalrous exorcist, a perverted toilet god and much more to add to the list. Each episode is something different and this anime is honestly a tear jerker. They touch really sensitive subjects, primarily suicide, and we get connected to and feel an entire lifetime worth of emotions from characters who don’t even last more than two episodes. Despite all this, Hanako-Kun is also really wholesome, upbeat and oftentimes comical. On top of it all, there’s romance! If you’re a fan of Avatar, One Piece or Blue Exorcist, this anime is definitely for you. Reason why I say so is because each show listed are known to be upbeat and highly lovable yet they all can get serious at times without getting TOO serious that it scares people away with expert use of comic relief, characters and themes. Hanako-Kun is perfect for both the younger and older crowds to enjoy.
6. ERASED
ERASED follows Satoru Fujinuma as he’s an unfortunate man who’s been gifted with the ability to go back in time to prevent disasters from happening and correcting timelines. However, Satoru CANNOT control whenever his power kicks in and time keeps repeating itself until he corrects what went wrong in each timeline even if he down to heart doesn’t want to correct the timeline. When Satoru’s mother was murdered and the murder was pinned on him, Satoru’s power kicked in and it sent him back to childhood where he figures out that whoever killed his childhood friend was also the person who murdered his mom in the future. However, Satoru has no idea who murdered them both and must figure it out in order to fix his future and continues to relive his childhood in the meantime. Breathtaking animation, sensitive plotlines, great characters I love Erased. I love realistic pieces of work with just a hint of fiction in which this most definitely fits the bill. The overall theme of Erased is the butterfly effect and helping those in need. It’s so unique and interesting how with even the littlest changes Satoru made in each timeline it drastically hurt someone else or changed something else entirely and he had to suffer the consequences with each little tweak which made up for a truly unpredictable anime. Not to forget that anime rarely has a little child as a main character which is another unique factor in itself. Or, well, technically it’s a 33 year old man reverted back to his 10 year old self but I still enjoy it. Erased also brought me to tears so many times like that in itself is a great feat. Erased is a great anime for those who love wholehearted mysteries with a hint of darkness. If you enjoyed Steins Gate and Death Parade, this anime is for you. Also, Erased has a very good live action show if you ever want to give that a try.
5. Kill La Kill
Kill La Kill follows female protagonist Ryuko Matoi as she attends a highschool in search of her father’s killer where your clothing determines your status. Depending on the rank of your school uniform, otherwise known as the Goku Uniform, your uniform can give the user strong battle capabilities. After quickly becoming aware of the sad reality of Goku uniforms, Ryuko cannot face her father’s killer and agrees to attend the highschool to lie and wait for the right time to strike. In the meantime, Ryuko finds a sentient uniform who goes by the name of Senketsu, which is the equivalent of a Goku Uniform, and now stands a chance against the Five Heads of her school. Yeah, this anime is literally ‘the less clothes you wear the stronger you are’ and it works. I hate heavily sexualized anime but again this time it just works. The animation style of Kill La Kill is so unique I haven’t seen anything like it. I love the characters so much as well. There’s no one in this anime that I can bring myself to hate except maybe the grand villain. I love how Kill La Kill is heavily supportive towards the LGBTQ+ community as they have lesbians as well as heavily hinted homosexuality between male characters. I’m also gonna put it out there again, I rarely like female anime characters because of them having horrible personalities, being weak fighters and being oversexualized but this anime really takes the cake for likable females as they’re strong, have enjoyable personalities all the while BEING oversexualized. Long story short, if you like ‘guilty pleasure’ anime with a deep and enjoyable plot, characters, wholesome content as well as action packed scenes then this anime is for you. I couldn’t put this anime down once I began it in which says a lot as I procrastinate more than I should with anime yet I finished this in just a few days which says how great Kill La Kill is. Also, I fucking love Guts the Pug. Who doesn’t like pugs!? Random fact, Guts the Pug is voiced by Derek Stephen Prince, the guy who voices Kokichi Ouma from Danganronpa as well as Vexen from Kingdom Hearts. Yeah, let that one sink in...
4. Cells At Work!
Cells At Work follows a Red Blood Cell as she learns about the body and its many functions throughout her countless hectic delivery runs over a course of 12 episodes. Okay, I watched this anime AFTER I graduated High School and learned MORE from this anime than I did in Biology class. Cells At Work not only dumbs down biology for you enough to understand but it’s accurate as hell!!! Just watch a real doctor react to this anime and they too are surprised by how accurate this anime is. You’re learning AND genuinely enjoying a great anime all at the same time. I love love loved Red and White Blood Cell’s relationship that I honestly ship them so hard. White Blood Cell always steals the show with his quirky yet lovable nature and downright sadistic ways of dealing with enemies. It’s sort of like Shoto Todoroki in a nutshell if I had to be honest. Despite having only one technically two episodes to himself, I must give credit to the Cancer Cell for having such a genuinely unique design and heartbreaking backstory. Even though this anime was very short lived, it always kept my interest. I’ve even seen this anime multiple times. The sub and dub are both phenomenal! But if I had to be honest, I actually prefer the sub. AND I RARELY LIKE SUB MORE THAN DUB!!! Back on track, if you like wholehearted anime where you can pick up on a random episode and not miss anything, this is perfect for you. Also, if you enjoy One Punch Man or Adventure Time, then give this anime a try. The artstyle and villains really remind me of One Punch Man while the rewatchability, characterization, character interactions and random factors thrown all about the anime reminded me of Adventure Time.
3. Beastars
Beastars follows Grey Wolf Legoshi as he’s a drama club student who struggles to fight his primal desire to consume meat despite such an act being illegal. One night, his primal instincts take over whereas he hunts a Dwarf Rabbit named Haru and by a slim chance he’s brought back to his senses and lets the girl go. Ever since that day, Legoshi slowly comes out of his shell and progresses to ‘crush’ on his rabbit victim all the while slowly becoming more and more accepted within animal society. Of course carnivore and herbivore relationships are ‘taboo’ and Legoshi has to overcome these obstacles. Beastars is the most recent anime on this list. Considering BLM and everything else going on currently in the world, this anime is a perfect representation of racial inequalities and indifferences as carnivores aren't equally treated and respected in a society where herbivores and carnivores live together in what nobody would call harmony. Carnivores are always treated as if they’re low in society and dangerous. Although this anime has it’s fair share of sexual content (It was made with the furry kink in mind) I still highly respect this anime although the animation style is VERY rough/clunky. It's a really odd mix of 2D and 3D and the audio doesn’t line up with their mouths in both sub and dub. Even the opening is oddly unique yet awkward as it’s stop motion. In the end, I love the characterization, design and themes of Beastars. If you like the movie Zootopia, the theme of racial inequality or enjoy furries in general, this anime is for you.
2. Avatar: The Last Airbender
Yeah, Avatar isn’t anime. However, I know ALOT of you are freaking out because you never knew Avatar isn’t Japanese but rather an American cartoon produced by Nickelodeon. Avatar is a widely respected animation that many anime fans welcome into the community, much like I do, and I highly recommend to you anime fans as well and here’s why! Avatar follows the world of Avatar where people from all over the globe can ‘control’ one of four different elements: Water, Earth, Fire and Air. The Avatar, the only person per generation who holds the ability to bend/control all four elements, is tasked with protecting the world. After being informed of being the Avatar and not wanting to accept his duties, 12 year old Aang runs away from home and freezes himself in time for 100 years. Water Tribe siblings Katara and Sokka stumble upon Aang and inform him that the world is at war. Aang, now aware of his wrongdoings, wants to accept responsibility and bring peace back to the world alongside Katara and Sokka all the while learning the four elements at the same time. Avatar is one of the most geographically, historically and culturally accurate shows in existence with an anime art style of all things. With a hefty 80 episodes to it’s arsenal, Avatar has speechless character development for ALL of their characters and one of the best villain redemption arcs of all time: Zuko the original Shoto Todoroki with the scar, fire and daddy issues to mix. All characters introduced eventually come back in future episodes playing key roles too. There’s unique themes within the show too such as characters being transgender, main characters having physical disabilities like being blind, as well as homosexuality. Not to forget that Avatar has cute and iconic animal companions as well! Gotta love Momo and Appa! Even the comedic relief characters are tolerable and ultimately enjoyable. Avatar is enjoyable for people of all ages and holds something for everyone. If you particularly liked Hunter x Hunter or Fullmetal Alchemist then Avatar is for you.
1. Kingdom Hearts
Strap in, this recommendation is LONG! Kingdom Hearts also isn’t anime. But to be fair, this heart moving game series is Japanese AND getting an anime adaptation THIS year. I’m SOOOOOO excited for the anime adaption!!!! Kingdom Hearts is an affordable game series (I bought every single game as a bundle for $30 called Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far) made up of 10 games with more on the way and it’s like Disney and Final Fantasy had a baby. You follow the airheaded islander named Sora (Who is strangely like Izuku Midoriya) who treasures friendship above all else. One day when his ‘world’ fell to darkness, Sora was separated from his best friend Riku and Love Interest Kairi and has to traverse countless Final Fantasy and Disney inspired worlds in order to reunite with them as well as saving the universe from darkness in the meantime. With each game made, the story of love and friendship just grows deeper and moves you to tears. There’s themes of love, legacy and how friendships can carry on past lifetimes and into the next. There’s powerful female characters, character interactions, designs and much more on top of addicting and fun gameplay. The side characters are prime examples. I’m sure you all know Axel (The Kirishima look alike) as well as Roxas who completely steal the show and are rightfully fan favorites. All of the characters in this series ended up with their own game or were playable at one point or another. This game series is LONG, but if you do end up giving them a try you won’t regret it. Believe me, Kingdom Hearts 1 is just the tip of the iceberg. The later games are the tear jerkers. Believe me when I say that this game is worth a try though. The fact that I cry playing this game, will replay it a million times and even went out to get myself a tattoo to represent this series marks it as one to give a try. The anime adaptation for Kingdom Hearts arriving later this year follows the backstory of Shiki and Neku, from Dream Drop Distance, as well as the events from said game. I was always wondering what exactly were their roles in the series and now they get an anime all to themselves. Mark me excited!!!
If you are still skeptical of trying the series out because you’ve never played any Final Fantasy games, don’t worry, only the characters are involved and you need to know NOTHING about them to enjoy this series. Trust me, I thought Leon and Eufie and many many others were characters Kingdom Hearts made for the series but I was wrong. That’s how flawlessly the characters were integrated into the series.
Also… This series delves into MANY Disney movies. If you like any of the movies I list, this game series is also for you.
The Nightmare Before Christmas, Frozen, Big Hero 6, The Lion King, Hercules, Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Tangled, Tron & Tron Legacy, Pinocchio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Fantasia, Beauty & the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, Winnie the Pooh, Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, Aladdin, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty
Well, this is my last anime recommendations update I'll ever make. Hope you enjoyed! Have you seen any of them? Do you plan to watch any of these now that I recommended them? If so, which ones?
The next update on this book is gonna be a lengthy one. A Kirishima x Reader x Kaminari 3 parter. Hope you look forward to it. I'll see you guys in the next update, bye bye!!!
