Errors in Strategy
Jack: Watch out, kid!
Jack voice filled your head as a student next to you got catapulted into the air due to the force of a mine. That's right. The next obstacle was a minefield. How was that even legal?! Sure they weren't deadly by any means and it was more like a flashbang, but they are mines! Come on!
Jack: We need a way to get back up there. We've been overtaken, kid!
(Y/n): I've been taken over. You've done nothing!
Jack: I've been giving you emotional support.
Another student exploded nearby flying forward into the dirt. As you watched the student pick himself up an idea came to mind. All of these students were flying upwards because they were stepping directly onto the mines. However... if one was to step on the side, there is a chance they would be launched forward. You sighed as you told yourself this was the only way and you were a fool all at the same time.
(Y/n): Here goes.
You found a mine in the dirt and walked around it carefully. With a deep breath and a shot of adrenaline through your veins, you thrust your foot back onto the mine igniting the hoped-for reaction. The mine ruptured and the force hit your back throwing you forward into the air.
(Y/n): Alright!
Jack: Smart thinking, kid! Try to hit another mine and keep up the momentum.
Gliding through the air seemed quite easy at first, but the momentum only shot you forward meaning your movements would either knock you off course of flip you into an awkward position. Your flight drew ever closer to a close as your heels licked the dirt before finding another mine. Luck was in your favor as the force managed to propel you further adding to your momentum. However, you were not the only one to get this idea. A massive explosion sent shockwaves through the ground and air nearly turning you sideways.
Present: Class a-A's Midoriya is in hot pursuit!
Your eyes widened. Not at the fact, Izuku had caused the massive explosion, but that he flew past you on a sheet of metal.
Present: Actually, He has taken the lead!
Izuku's spectacle had taken your mind off the fact you were still flying and as you came into contact with the ground it was your hand, not your foot that managed to find a landmine.
Jack/(Y/n): Oh no.
The mine exploded launching you ever forward, but with a straighter trajectory. Your limbs flailed as your right eye stung. Some dirt must have gotten into your eye leaving you with your original left eye only to guide you.
Present Mic: The two formerly in the lead have stopped trying to slow each other down and are chasing Midoriya!
You should be one of those leaders damn it!
You tightened your back and let your arms fly back to pierce through the air and avoid wind resistance. We another speed boost maybe just maybe you could catch up to those three in front! Another explosion let loose in front of you as presumably one of the leaders in front had set it off. You attempted to shield your eyes as you passed through the cloud of pink/purple smoke and managed to protect your left eye... but your right. your right began to burn worse and worse and the occasional jolt ran through your veins. You collided into the ground and rolled onto your feet before continuing to race forward. You still had a chance!-
Present Mic: Who could have predicted the developments at the beginning or this conclusion? Right now, the first person back in the stadium is that man... Izuku Midoriya made a huge splash!
A weight crashed down onto you. Izuku had won? You had hoped for so badly to win this race and show off your training to the world and more importantly your grandparents. However, you still had the rest of the race to go. Nothing is going to stop you anymore. You charge forth with a new vigor filling your body. Your shoes made contact with the concrete of the stadium as you and many others hoped to fill in spots closest to the front. T-There she was! The girl who's hair looked liked vines was the person in front of you. You grit your teeth and poured your energy into your legs pushing yourself further. The distance between the two of you grew smaller and smaller. With one final lunge, you let out your breath and flung yourself forward hoping to see if you could take a spot just one tiny bit closer to first and...
You did.
The light of day bathed upon you as you exited the tunnel, its warmth spreading through you and feeling you with a sense of pride. You came to a stop panting and breathing deeply. Despite your training that race was still grueling for someone with your type of quirk. You straightened your back and turned to find the girl panting softly behind you. A smile spread to your features.
(Y/n): I did... it. Sorry... to snatch ... it from you.
She looked at you and looked you up and down before smiling herself.
???: You were a good opponent till the very end.
She offered her hand to you in a show of good sportsmanship. You turned to her and raised your hand.
(Y/n): You as well. My nam- Auhhhh!
You let out an anguished howl as you open your right eye. An intense burning sensation filled the surrounding skin as a sharp pain seemed to connect directly to your brain. You ripped your hand and clutched your right eye clasping your left hand over your right eye that had shielded your eye.
???: A-Are you alright?!
The girl came forward and prevented you from falling facefirst into the grass as the pain seemed to loosen your control over your muscles from the sheer shock. Another person approached from your right side and held your up by your side. By the sound of their voice in your ear, you knew who it was right away.
Eijiro: Are you ok, man?!
(Y/n): Y-Yeah I just need to go to the nurse's office! I got something in my ey-ow!
You tried to mask the distress in your voice, but it shone through slightly. The pain had you groaning out as well as a fear grew in your heart. Was it really dirt or did Mei's prototype finally decide to kick the bucket and in your eye socket no less? Kirishima helped walk you to to the nurse's office as you noticed something that would make you more fearful than your eye. the stadium which had been screaming and laughing and filled with happiness just moments ago was nowhere near that decibel. Sure there were still multiple conversations and the music still played, however at least where you were, it was silent.
(Y/n): Damn it!
You watched on as the next even began. A cavalry battle that you should have been a part of.
Recovery Girl: I'm sorry I can't assist you (Y/n). I tried to heal you, but it only healed the minor scrapes and cuts, not the eye.
(Y/n): You did the best you could mam.
You looked down at the ground. The room silent other than the sounds of the event raging on the small television set.
Recovery Girl: Don't look so down! you did get fourth place!
(Y/n): I know... but that means nothing if I can't compete.
All you could do now was try to relax with an ice pack. The ice pack was no help at all, but it at least numbed the burning sensation around your eye. Mei was a participant in the cavalry battle and the only one who could help you at this moment. Would she have been on your team? If you had powered through would you and Mei have been on a team trying to win this whole thing? Those questions would never be answered sadly as you waited for the event to finish.
Mei: Are you ok (Y/n)?!
Once the battle had concluded, you waited patiently until the girl rushed the nurses office. It honestly saddened you slightly that the rest of the class had not arrived. You had wished Tsuyu would be there, but she must have been preoccupied with the results. Mei rushed forward and pulled on your wrist. You let your arm lazily fall with the slightly melted ice pack and proceeded to open your eye as much as possible for the girl upon her request.
Mei: Whew. Don't scare me like that!
(Y/n): what do you mean scare you? I was the one scared!
Mei: I was worried about you and my baby!
You sighed.
(Y/n): So what's the problem?
Mei: It seems that when you got caught in one of those explosions some debris hit your eye and caused some minor scratches. Any pains or aches, as well as burning sensations, are from the eye trying to work despite the scratches. Though in the future I should put more resistant mater-
(Y/n): Can you fix it, please?
You wanted to cut her off before she went on a tangent. Her personality was cute like that, but you needed to get back out there to see if you still even qualified.
Mei: Of course! I just need to get rid of the debris and clean up those scratches and you should be fine!
Mei's gloved hand pressed against your cheek slightly. She stared into your eye excitedly and that comforting feeling from before spreading through your chest. You reached up and lightly held her gloved writs. With a nod of the head, Mei quickly cleaned up your eye and lectured you on being extra careful until she could tinker with it. You, however, were too focused on the fact you had thought Mei's personality was cute. That should be the last thing on your mind, but it still brought a warmth to your cheeks.
Mei: Alright! Let's go back out there and see our next event!
(Y/n): Right!
You both rushed out of Recovery Girls' office. The heroine herself sat in a chair chuckling to herself. The two of you walked side by side back towards the light of the stadium. You were nervous, to be honest. All the adrenaline and pride you had been demolished by your eye going on the fritz. Now you were a fourth-place contestant with possibly no place in the final event. You felt Mei's fingers graze yours as you looked into her eyes. The yellow crosshair irises shining brightly. Just that simple look. That look of confidence. that look of confidence trained on a wounded animal such as yourself... gave you the internal strength to push forward into the light of the stadium. Everyone was lined up to hear of the last event and in a matter of seconds, you would join them.
Our hero has concluded the obstacle race in fourth-place! The situation with his eye took him out of the cavalry battle, however, leaving our hero with no points thus no possibility in competing in the final event. What will become of him as he rejoins his fellow students?! Find out in the next update of My Hero Academia x Male Reader!
