Issue 1: I'm Made of Rubber! So What?!
Last time we witnessed how a lesser known Pro Hero stopping a Bank Robbery inspired a young boy with an unimpressive Quirk to aspire to become a Pro Hero as well. Now Ten Years after that fateful day the Boy, now a Teenager is about to set foot into U.A. Academy for the first time.
In Musutafu Japan sat a large academy, this academy was one of Japan's most prestigious Hero Schools. U.A. Academy, Japan's top Hero School who has had some of the most famous modern day heroes pass through its halls.
Standing in front of this massive school was a young man with short messy black hair and big blue eyes. He was dressed in U.A.'s Uniform as a big smile was plastered on his face.
This young man was Masato Hironaka, the boy who had witnessed the Pro Hero Springer defeat the Villain Payday ten years ago. He was also the Nephew of the Pro Hero Midnight. Masato looked up at U.A. Academy, his smile only growing wider.
Masato: Finally here! I'm in Class 1-B, Auntie said their classroom is on the second floor.
Masato then walked through the gate of U.A. Academy and began making his way towards the main building of the school. Masato walked through the halls as he began looking around for his classroom.
Masato: Where is it? Man I really should've taken Auntie up on her offer to let me walk the Academy before the semester started!
Masato began walking faster as he did his best to figure out where the heck his classroom was. It was his first day and he was already risking being late.
Class 1-B
In one of the classrooms of U.A., a Pro Hero with short white hair dressed in a red bodysuit stood at the front of the classroom.
This man is the Pro Hero, Blood Hero Vlad King, the teacher of Class 1-B. Vlad King stood in front of a room of students, all of them rather unique in appearance.
These are the students of Class 1-B, however amongst them was a single empty desk, one student was missing.
Vlad King: It appears we are one short. I suppose we will need to start the lesson without them.
The students of Class 1-B all looked around at one another, completely dumbfounded one of their members would be late on the first day. Vlad King was about to explain what their lesson was for the day only for the door to the classroom to burst open and Masato to walk in.
Masato: Sorry for being late Sensei! I got lost on my way here!
Vlad King and the rest of Class 1-B turned to face the newest arrival to the room. A stern expression spread across Vlad King's face as he looked Masato over.
Vlad King: Late on the first day Hironaka, I expect this to not become a common occurrence. Do I make myself clear?
Masato: Loud and clear Captain!
Masato performed a mock salute to Vlad King who pointed him towards his desk. The rest of Class 1-B watched Masato sit down, all of them wondering how someone so laidback and seemingly carefree managed to make it into the Hero Course of all things. Once Masato took his seat Vlad King began speaking.
Vlad King: Now then, all of you have been accepted into the Hero Course. If you thought the Entrance Exam was difficult, I regret to inform you that was the easy part. From this moment forward everything will only grow increasingly difficult. You will be pushed to your limits and beyond them on an almost daily basis.
Some of the students paled at their teacher's words, however Masato smiled at this information. He could already tell this was semester was gonna be a lot of fun.
Vlad King: To begin, we will be performing physical training. This training will test you all in different areas. These exercises will allow me to gauge what capabilities you all currently have with your Quirks. From there we can develop specialized training that will allow all of you to improve in the areas you are lacking. Do I make myself clear?
Class 1-B: Yes Vlad King-Sensei!
Vlad King smirked, this is where he could get a better understanding of just what these kids are capable of.
Vlad King: Good, now all of you go get changed into your Gym Uniforms, we have work to do!
All of Class 1-B stood up and began their trip to the gym locker rooms to change into their Gym Uniforms. Masato however had a giant grin on his face, this was going to be fun.
P.E. Grounds
Vlad King stood in front of his students as they were all now dressed in their P.E. Uniforms. The students found themselves standing on the Academy's P.E. Grounds, a place to help them train their Quirks.
Masato was simply standing there with a smile on his face, he was worried he'd be getting some boring lecture on his first day. Vlad King finally stepped forward to explain the first test.
Vlad King: To begin we will be doing the one hundred meter dash. You can perform it normally or use your Quirk to assist you. Hironaka, considering you were late today, you will be up first.
A few of the Students of Class 1-B snickered as Masato walked onto the straightaway of the track.
Vlad King: Before we begin, state your Quirk. This will give me an idea of what to expect.
Masato smiled as he pinched both his cheeks before stretching them far away from his mouth like a rubber band.
Masato: Rubber Body! My entire body is made of Rubber!
Masato released his cheeks, letting them comically snap back into place like a rubber band. Not only did the students of Class 1-B look baffled, so did Vlad King. On paper that Quirk sounded next to useless for hero work.
Vlad King: Interesting, very well you will begin on my command.
Masato nodded before reeling both his arms back as he waited for Vlad King to give the order.
Vlad King: GO!
Masato launched both arms forward as they stretched forward, stopping at 150 feet, his hands digging into the ground at roughly the halfway point of the straight away. Masato then leaped off the ground as his body snapped forward, his arms quickly pulling him towards his hands. Masato let go of the ground as his arms snapped back into place and he flew through the air and over the finish line. Masato crashed feet first into the ground twenty feet past the track as he slid across the dirt, a pile of it forming in front of him as he slowed down.
Masato: How was that Vlad-Sensei?
Masato turned to look at his teacher and classmates only to see all of them giving him the most dumbfounded look. What had they just witnessed?
Vlad King: Fifteen seconds, well done Hironaka. A clever way of utilizing your Quirk.
Masato smirks as he let out a chuckle before walking back and rejoining his classmates. Masato stood there with a smirk on his face, completely oblivious to the strange looks his classmates were giving him.
????: You're Spooky.....
Masato perked up at the female voice that said that as he turned to look at a girl. She had short pale gray hair and pale skin. She had a rather emotionless expression on her face and let her arms dangle at her sides awkwardly. She wore the same P.E. Uniform Masato was dressed in.
This girl was Reiko Yanagi, one of Masato's classmates.
Masato: I'm spooky? What do you mean?
Masato tilted his head to the side as he shot the girl a confused look. Reiko timidly looked away from Masato, refusing to make eye contact.
Reiko: It's like a horror story I read online, it was about a man whose body was forcibly stretched and contorted into a spiral shape. Your Quirk lets you do that Hironaka.
Masato: Masato....
Reiko's eyes widened in surprise as she looked at Masato in nervous confusion.
Reiko: P-Pardon?
Masato: Call me by my first name! People calling me by my last name is way too stuffy and formal. Besides, since we're classmates we should be friends right?
Masato shot Reiko a smile as the timid girl's eyes widened in surprise at his words, she didn't expect anyone to want to be her friend on their first day.
Reiko: Y-You wanna be my friend?
Masato's smile only grew larger as he nodded his head vigorously. A tiny blush spread across Reiko's face as a tiny smile graced her lips, she was honestly flattered someone activity wanted to be her friend.
Reiko: A-Alright, then call me Reiko, Masato.
Masato let out a chuckle and nodded his head again before both of them turned to watch their classmates perform their one hundred meter dashes.
One Hour Later
One hour had passed since Class 1-B started their Quirk Training. Aside from the one hundred meter dash, they had also performed weight lifting, basic exercises, and other simple tasks all using their Quirks. Masato had a smile plastered on his face the entire time. This was his element, physical education was his favorite after all! All of Class 1-B had finished up their basic exercises and now found themselves facing Vlad King, who had a large block of cement behind him.
Vlad King: All of you have performed well so far, however this next test will allow me to figure out how much power currently have when attacking with your Quirk. You only get one hit so make it count!
Masato's smile only got larger, finally he got to test out one of the attacks he's been working on!
????: Why do you look so excited? Your Quirk could hardly put a dent in that cement.
????: Monoma that's rude! Hironaka has proven over this training exercise that his Quirk is more complex than what we all initially thought.
Masato turned to see a girl with orange hair in a ponytail standing next to a boy with short blonde hair.
The girl was Itsuka Kendo and the boy was Neito Monoma, two more of Masato's classmates.
Monoma: I fail to see the issue with my words Kendo, his body is made of Rubber. I doubt rubber can do much damage to cement.
Itsuka: Even if what you say is true, that doesn't mean you have the right to insult him like that!
Masato: Oi Blondie, I can throw a mean punch you know!
Itsuka and Monoma both looked over at Masato who to their surprise was not at all offended by Monoma's comment, but rather looked like he was simply stating a fact. Monoma however turned to look at Masato, a smug smirk on his face.
Monoma: What does it matter if you have an understanding of hand to hand combat? Rubber isn't exactly the toughest material in the world. Therefore your fist will harmlessly bounce off the cement block.
Masato: Yeah, but I'm really good at punching, so what's your point?
Masato tilted his head to the side in confusion as Monoma looked at him in complete disbelief. The blonde haired boy could not even begin to comprehend how oblivious his classmate was. Itsuka however giggled, at least she knew Hironaka wasn't easily offended.
Vlad King: Kendo! It's your turn!
Itsuka: well, looks like I'm up. Wish me luck guys.
Masato: Good luck!
Monoma: Is your brain made of rubber as well?
Masato turned to look over at Monoma, tilting his head in confusion as Monoma slapped his forehead with the palm of his hand. Itsuka walked up to the cement block which had a few chips taken out of it from her classmates attempts. Itsuka's right hand enlarged to giant size before she reeled back her arm and punched the cement block with her giant fist. A few sizable pieces of the block fell off as Itsuka pulled her fist back.
Vlad King: Well done Kendo. Hironaka, you're up next!
Monoma: Good luck rubber boy, you're going to need it.
Masato: Thanks Blondie! Good luck when it's your turn!
Monika let out a frustrated groan as it was clear he wasn't getting through to Masato at all. Masato walked up to the cement block as Itsuka passed him, the girl held her hand up for a high five.
Itsuka: Good luck Hironaka, wipe that smirk off Monoma's face.
Masato: Okay!
Masato high fives Itsuka as she walks past him before stopping in front of the cement block.
Vlad King: You may go whenever you are ready Hironaka.
Masato nodded before he quickly whipped his right arm behind him as it began to extend backwards into the sky. Masato quickly swung his right arm forward as his fist was sent flying towards the cement block at high speeds striking it dead center.
The cement block cracked before the top half of it fell off and crashed to the ground. Monoma's jaw dropped in disbelief while the rest of Class 1-B looked completely stunned. Vlad King however was impressed.
Vlad King: So you stretched your arm and use the momentum of it snapping back to your body to increase the power behind your fist. That is a brilliant use of your Quirk, Hironaka.
Masato: I call it Elasti-Sniper, I got the idea from when I started practicing as a child. When I practiced stretching my arms the recoil of them snapping back would knock me off my feet. So I thought, what if I applied that recoil momentum to a punch?
Vlad King nodded his head in approval at Masato's words as it was an ingenious way to turn a seemingly downside of his Quirk into a tool to better his attacks.
Vlad King: Take notes from Hironaka everyone, that is the type of creativity that when applied to one's Quirk usage can only make you a better Hero.
Class 1-B nodded as Masato walked back to his classmates and stood there, his trademark grin still plastered across his face. Monoma however stared at Masato in disbelief, unable to wrap his head around how the class clown of all people had talent in using his Quirk in unexpected ways.
Monoma's Thoughts: Is Hironaka secretly a Genius Prodigy?!
As Monoma thought that however, Masato simply stood there talking to Reiko.
Reiko: How did you know how long you needed to stretch your arm to break the block?
Masato: Oh I didn't know, I just extended my arm back and threw the punch!
Reiko giggled at how simpleminded Masato was about approaching things. A new cement block was brought out to replace the broken one so the rest of the class could take their turns.
After School
Classes had ended for the day and Masato was currently in the process of packing up his backpack so he could head home for the day.
Masato: Vlad-Sensei said the real training begins now that he has gauged our abilities. Looks like the fun is only beginning!
Masato slipped the last of his school supplies into his backpack before slinging it over his shoulder. Masato was about to start walking out of the academy only to be stopped by a gentle two on his shoulder. Masato turned around to see Reiko, who gave him a small smile.
Reiko: Masato, before you leave can we exchange contact information? I wanna share that horror story I told you about in class today.
Masato: Sure! Hold on let me get my phone out.
Masato pulled out his cellphone as Reiko pulled out her cellphone as well, both of them trading their phone numbers. Masato and Reiko both slipped their cellphones back into their pockets once the exchange was done.
Reiko: I'll make sure to send that story to you when I get home. I'll also send you any others I think you'll like.
Masato: Okay, it'll give us something to talk about at lunch! See you tomorrow Reiko!
A small smile spread across Reiko's lips as she waved goodbye to Masato before she walked out of the academy.
????: Awww, has my Nephew got himself a girlfriend on his first day of school?
Masato turned around to see a woman in a skintight bodysuit that had handcuffs around her wrists. A red mask rested on her forehead.
This was the superhero alter ego of Masato's Aunt, Midnight.
Masato: Hi Auntie! Yeah Reiko and I became friends during our Quirk Training Class.
Midnight smiled at her nephew before pulling him into a hug.
Midnight: That's wonderful Masato, I heard from Vlad King you did really well during class today despite being late....
Midnight shot her nephew a stern look as Masato scratched the back of his head in embarrassment.
Masato: Sorry, I got lost trying to find my way to the classroom. This place is a lot bigger than I expected.
Midnight let out a sigh as she expected that answer given how easily distracted her nephew could be at times.
Midnight: I told you it would be a good idea if you walked the academy with me before the semester started.
Masato: I know, but I really wanted to get some extra training in before school started up for the year.
Midnight once again sighed but let a smile spread across her face as she gently pinched her nephew's cheek before stretching it away from his mouth in a teasing manner.
Midnight: I admire your dedication to improving Masato, but you do realize being a hero is more than just being good at using your Quirk right?
Masato: I know that! But my Quirk isn't naturally powerful so I gotta work hard to improve it so it can be useful.
Midnight giggled before she released her nephew's cheek, causing it to comically snap back into place like a rubber band.
Midnight: Well you certainly are creative in that department, you thoroughly confused Vlad King with your performance. He never expected you to have already found a few unique ways to utilize your Rubber Body Quirk.
Masato chuckled in a good natured manner as he remembered everyone giving him funny looks during class.
Masato: What can I say? It's a lot of fun finding new ways to use my Quirk! I've even been working on a few more ideas before the semester started! I've got some many things I wanna try out!
Midnight giggles as she gently patted her Nephew on top of his head. His positivity was infectious, which was one of in her opinion his best attributes.
Midnight: You have plenty of time to work on them now that you are a student here at U.A. Now what do you say we go out for dinner to celebrate your first day?
A giant grin spread across Masato's face as he stretched his arms and wrapped his arms around Midnight like a pair of ropes as he pulled his aunt into a hug.
Masato: You're the best Auntie!
Midnight giggled as Masato released her from the hug as they both walked out of the academy ready to head off to celebrate Masato's first day. This marking the beginning Masato's journey at U.A on his path to become a Pro Hero.
So that was Masato's first day at U.A Academy! Now originally I planned on moving onto to the Sports Festival. However I realized after writing this chapter, I realized I want to do more Class 1-B centric stories that break away from the main plot of the show. So let me ask this, would you like me to do a Class 1-B version of the Battle Trial Arc? It will at most be Two Chapters long, then we will move onto the Sports Festival. Please leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments as always! What awaits Masato next at U.A.? Find out in the next Issue of My Hero Academia: Unlikely Heroes!
