Chapter 6: Hero Names and Internships

It's been a few days since the USJ incident. Eventually, the teachers of UA decided to host the UA Sports Festival, despite the villain's attack. Arcturus was the winner of the Sports Festival.

Shuri was invited to come back to Wakanda by the king and her older brother, the Black Panther. So, she left Japan for the time being.

On the train, Arc was resting, but found it difficult due to people recognizing him from winning the festival. It was a bit of an oddity for him as he wasn't used to that kind of recognition. Nevertheless, he appreciated it and soon met up with Izuku.

Izuku: Hey, Arc. Where's Wanda?

Arcturus: She drove with Ma. I was feeling tired from all the excitement, so I took a train to try and rest.

Izuku: I don't blame you. I feel like I'm barely awake.

Iida: Good morning, Midoriya! Farron!

They turn around and see him running up with a rain coat and boots on.

Izuku: Whoa, Iida! You really went all out with the rain gear.

Iida: Why on earth are you walking so slowly? You'll be late.

Arcturus: We still have five minutes until the first bell.

Iida: U.A. students should always arrive ten minutes early, don't you think?

He rushes up ahead, and the two friends agreed something wasn't right. They headed into the locker room and put their stuff away. As they do, they try to talk to their friend.

Izuku: So, Iida. Um...

Iida: If it's about my brother, don't be concerned. I'm sorry if I made you worry. Everything'll be fine.

The two agreed he wasn't alright, but respected that their friend wasn't in the mood to talk. After getting their things, they headed off to class where the rest of their classmates were talking about the games.

Mina: It's so weird that people recognize us from TV. Everyone wanted to talk to me on my way here.

Kirishima: Yeah, me, too!

Toru: People on the streets were staring at me! It was kind of embarrassing.

Ojiro: Sure, but isn't that pretty normal for you?

Sero: You won't believe what a bunch of elementary school brats yelled at me.

Tsuyu: "Nice try?"

Sero: (groans in depression)

Wanda: You don't hesitate to roast someone, Tsu, and that's what I appreciate about you.

Tsuyu: Thanks, Wanda.

Kaminari: All it took was one sports festival and suddenly we're like celebrities.

Mineta: This school really is amazing.

The door opens and they see Aizawa back in with all the bandages gone and face fully healed with the exception of a scar under his right eye.

Aizawa: Morning.

Students: Good morning, Mr. Aizawa!

Tsuyu: Ribbit? Mr. Aizawa, you don't have bandages anymore. That's good news.

Aizawa: The old lady went a little overboard in her treatment. Anyway, before we get into things, there's a few things to you all should know. First off, due to a family emergency, Shuri is excused from class for the next few days. Secondly, concerning Reyes, Principal Nedzu and I have already spoken with him. Even with that demonstration at the games, Reyes is still your classmate, and I expect you all to treat him as such. And while I hope I shouldn't have to say it, none of you are to provoke him into triggering his other form outside of hero training. Otherwise the punishment is expulsion. Understood?

Students: Yes, sir!

Aizawa: Good. Now, we have a big class today on Hero Informatics.

Most of the students tensed upon that as it was a subject they had trouble with.

Aizawa: You need code names. Time to pick your hero identities.

Students: (excited) This is gonna be totally awesome!

Aizawa uses his quirk and everyone immediately calms down.

Aizawa: This is related to the pro hero draft picks that I mentioned the last time we were in class together. Normally, students don't have to worry about the draft yet. Not until their second or third year actually, but your class is different. In fact, by extending offers to first-years like you, pros are essentially investing in your potential. Any offers can be rescinded if their interest in you dies down before graduation, though.

Mineta: (mad) Stupid, selfish adults.

Toru: So, what you're saying is, we'll still have to prove ourselves after we've gotten recruited.

Aizawa: Correct. Now. Here are the total results for those of you who got offers.

He presses a remote and they saw the students with the most offers.

Arcturus with 6,039

Shoto with 4,123

Katsuki with 3,556

Shuri with 3,384

Wanda with 2,097

Iida with 301

Hitomi with 294

Ochaco with 105

Robbie with 66

Kirishima with 20

Momo with 14

Sero with 10

Arcturus: (thoughts, surprised) Holy shit, that's a lot!

Aizawa: In past years, it's been more spread out. But there's a pretty big gap this time.

Kaminari: Gah! That's no fair.

Aoyama: What about the real star? Moi?

Kyoka: Makes sense for Arc to get so much, but Todoroki got more than Bakugo?

Kirishima: Yeah, it's the opposite of how they went up in the festival.

Robbie: After seeing the way he fought, don't think they're looking for a loud mouth with a short temper.

Katsuki: (mad) If I scared a pro, they're just weak!

Momo: (sighs, looks at Shoto with a small smile) That's amazing. You must be proud.

Shoto: These offers are probably because of my father.

Wanda: Hey, don't belittle yourself like that. I'm sure some of them are because of your talents.

Ochaco: (shakes Iida forward and back) People want us! (giggles)

Izuku unfortunately was depressed as he didn't get any offers.

Aizawa: Despite these results, you'll all be interning with pros. Got it? Even those of you who didn't get any offers.

Izuku: Oh, so, we're all interning?

Aizawa: Yes. You already got to experience combat with real villains during the USJ Incident. But it'll still be helpful to see pros at work. Up close and personal, in the field. Firsthand.

Sato: And for that, we need hero names!

Ochaco: Things are suddenly getting a lot more fun!

Aizawa: These hero names will likely be temporary, but take them seriously or...

???: (door opens) ...you'll have hell to pay later!

Looking over, they see it to be Midnight entering the class

Midnight: What you pick today could be your codename for life. You better be careful, or you'll be stuck with something utterly indecent.

Students: Ms. Midnight!

Aizawa: Yeah. She!s got a good point. Midnight is going to have final approval over your names. It's not my forte. (picks up sleeping bag) The name you give yourself is important. It helps reinforce your image and shows what kind of hero you wanna be in the future. A codename tells people exactly what you represent. Take "All Might" for example.

They were then handed out whiteboards and were told to write down the names and present them.

Hitomi: (thoughts) Something that would reflect me...

Aoyama goes first with his.

Aoyama: Hold your breath. The Shining Hero. My name is "I can not stop twinkling."

Mon amis. You can't deny my sparkle.

Students: (dumbfounded) Come on, that's a sentence!

Midnight: (writes some corrections) It'll be better this way. Take out the "I" and shorten the "cannot" to "can't."

Aoyama: It's stunning, mademoiselle.

Students: (still dumbfounded) She likes it?

Sato: Also, you're not really French, are you? That's just an act.

Mina: Okie dokie, lemme go next! My code name: Alien Queen!

Midnight: Hold on! Like that horrible monster with the acidic blood? I don't think so.

Mina: (disappointed) Dang it.

Students: That one wasn't okay?

Now the rest were on edge due to how ridiculous the first two were. But that would change when the next one came up.

Tsuyu: Ribbit! I think I got one. Okay if I come up next?

Midnight: Come on up!

Tsuyu: I've had this name in mind since grade school.

Rainy Season Hero: Froppy!

Midnight: That's delightful! It makes you sound approachable. What a great example of a name everyone will love!

That helped the others out and they began chanting Froppy.

Students: Froppy! Froppy! Froppy! Froppy!

Kirishima: I've got mine, too. The Sturdy Hero. My name is Red Riot!

Midnight: "Red Riot"? Interesting. You're paying homage to the Chivalrous Hero, Crimson Riot, yes?

Kirishima: That's right. He may be kind of old school, but someday, I wanna be just like he was. Crimson was my idol.

Midnight: Hm. If you're bearing the name of someone you admire, you have that much more to live up to.

Kirishima: I accept the challenge.

Hitomi was still struggling to think of a name as people started presenting their hero names.

She was racking her brain for ideas before she suddenly remembered an offhand comment Nari had made about her back when they were little.

Hitomi: (thoughts) That's it!

Hitomi scrawled out what she hoped would be a good title on her whiteboard, raising her hand after Kirishima presented his name.

Hitomi: Midnight, may I go next?

Midnight: Of course!

Hitomi held the whiteboard close to her as she walked up to the podium, feeling her nerves flare up as everyone awaited her name. She held her whiteboard up, her face heating up as she presented her future title.

Hitomi: Veiling Hero: Blue Moon.

Her classmates made sounds of approval as Midnight clapped her hands together in excitement.

Midnight: How elegant! It even fits with how your eyes glow when you use your quirk!

Hitomi: That's what I was going for. An old friend of mine told me my eyes reminded her of the moon, which is a little fitting since she's the reason I wanted to be a hero in the first place.

Midnight: Oh, it even has sentimental value! Great job, Kanetsukabe!

Hitomi beamed to herself as she took her seat, her other classmates proceeding to present their own names. For a bit, the others brought up their names, with most being creative and others being similar to already existing heroes.

Kyoka: The Hearing Hero. I'm Earphone Jack.

Shoji: The Tentacle Hero, Tentacole.

Sero: The Taping Hero, Cellophane!

Ojiro: Martial Arts Hero: Tailman.

Sato: I'm the Sweets Hero, Sugarman!

Mina: Pinky!

Kaminari: Stun Gun Hero: I am ChargeBolt. Electric, doncha think?

Toru: The Stealth Hero: Invisible Girl!

Midnight: All of these are really great! Come on, who's going to be next?

Momo: I hope that I can live up to this name. The Everything Hero: I'm Creati!

Shoto: Shoto...

Wanda: You're just gonna use your name?

Shoto: Yes.

Tokoyami: Jet-Black Hero: Tsukuyomi.

Mineta: I'm the Fresh-Picked Hero: Grape Juice!

Robbie: The Hell Fire Hero: Ghost Rider.

Midnight: Ooh, keeping up with your quirk's name. You're aware that most see that of the name of a vigilante in America, yes?

Robbie: Yeah, which is why I wanna change that. If I'm really sticking with this hero stuff, then I'll make the Ghost Rider the name of a hero.

Midnight: Excellent argument. I approved!

Everyone's hero names were presented in a blink of an eye, and they were pretty good ones too... well maybe not all of them.

Katsuki: King Explosion Murder.

Arcturus: (deadpan) You can't have 'Murder' in a hero name.

Midnight: Agreed. I'm gonna say that one's a little too violent.

Katsuki: Huh, whaddaya mean?!

Arcturus: I just said why, Bomb Bitch!

Katsuki: Shut up, Lightning Prick!

Kirishima: Why don't you be Explosion Boy?

Katsuki: You shut up Weird Hair!

Wanda: How about Short-fused Firecracker?

Katsuki: Piss off, Witch Girl!

A few students just laugh while Ochaco goes up next.

Ochaco: This is the name I thought of: Uravity!

Midnight: I just love that!

She sighs in relief while the others were clapping. Wanda goes up next.

Wanda: The Magic Hero: Crimson Sorceress.

Midnight: A good pick. Leaning more into the Magic side of your character.

Wanda: (thoughts) I had another one, but I'm not sure if it would work for a hero name.

Midnight: To be honest, choosing names is going faster than I thought it would. All we have left is young Bakugo, who needs to rethink his, Arc, Iida, and Midoriya. Oh yes, and Shuri, too, but she can do that when she gets back.

Izuku went up to give his name. Everyone but Arc and Wanda were surprised and even asked if he wanted it.

Mineta: Really Midoriya?

Kaminari: You sure about that?

Kirishima: Yeah, man, remember, That could be your name forever.

Izuku: Right. I used to hate this name. But, then, something changed. I guess... Someone taught me that it could have a different meaning. And that had a huge impact on how I felt. So, now I really like it.

Deku. That has to be my codename!

Katsuki was taken back by him using that insult as a hero name, while Arc, Wanda, Hitomi, and Ochaco smile at his choice. Iida looked like he wanted to write something else, but chose his name instead. Arc knew something was bothering him, and it most likely was what happened to his brother. Arc then went next to give name.

Arcturus: The Sonic-Speed Hero: Lightning.

Midnight: Ooo, you've chosen to take up your mother's name. It definitely suits your speed perfectly. I approve it! Work hard to make the next generation of Lightning your own.

Arcturus: I will, and thank you.

He sits down and Katsuki gives his second attempt.

Katsuki: Lord Explosion Murder!

Arcturus: That's literally the same thing.

Katsuki: No it's not!

(meanwhile)

In the teacher's office, Cynthia was looking over some of the offers that the first years were receiving when she notices one.

Cythina: Interesting. Hey, All Might!

All Might: Yes?

Cythina: We just got an offer for both Arc and Izuku.

All Might: Both of them? Who's it from?

Cythina: (smirks) See for yourself.

He looks at the request, and looked like he just got the fear of God put into him.

All Might: (shocked) WHAT?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!

Aizawa soon woke up and said that the next step for them will be to choose their internships. They only last for a week and will need to decide where to go. Those on the board can choose from any of the recommendations while everyone else will choose from a different list.

There were around 40 agencies who agreed to take the class in as interns, and each of them revolved around a different hero function like rescue and undercover work. Either way, they needed to think carefully of where they want to go.

Kirishima: I want to fight crime and bad guys in a big city.

Tsuyu: I just hope I can intern someplace where there's a lot of flooding. Or maybe a lake.

Aizawa: Turn in your choices before the weekend.

Sero: We've only got two days?

Aizawa: Yeah, so you should start now. You're dismissed.

The teachers leave and the students were left to their own picks. Some of them were struggling a bit with their choices while others figured it out pretty fast.

Mina: So, guys, have you decided what pro agency you wanna go for?

Mineta: Mt. Lady's my top choice!

Tsuyu: Mineta. Are you thinking something perverted?

Mineta: Possibly...

Arcturus: Wish you were so fucking awkward, bud. (to Mina) You did get pretty far, Mina. I'm surprised you didn't get any offers.

Mina: I know! Meanwhile, you got so many!

Ochaco: How are you going to go through them?

Arcturus: I can speed read through them and pick out my choice. Have you thought of one, Wanda?

Wanda: Not yet. Maybe I'll try Thirteen or Mama's.

Ochaco: I've got my pick.

Mina: Already?

Ojiro: What agency?

Ochaco: The one that the Battle Hero, Gunhead, runs.

Izuku: Huh? Gunhead's a big brawler, though. Are you sure that's where you wanna intern, Uraraka?

Ochaco: Yup! He sent me an offer.

Arcturus: Cool. But, I thought you wanted to be a rescue hero like Thirteen.

Ochaco: Ultimately, that's the plan. But I've been thinking ever since the festival— Well, at least since I faced off against Wanda. The stronger I am, the more possibilities I'll have. Plus, learning from a battle hero will give me a different perspective. Right?

Arcturus: (smiles) That's a smart way to look at it.

Hitomi was sifting through the offers she got as her classmates talked about the different agencies they'd want to go to. She stopped when she saw a certain hero's name.

 Shield Hero: Crust Agency.

Getting up from her seat, paper in hand, she approached Izuku's desk, the people around him having a discussion about the training technique air chair. She tapped his shoulder to get his attention.

Hitomi: Hey, Midoriya.

Izuku: Yes?

Hitomi: (showed the paper to him) What do you know about this hero?

Izuku: (gasped) Crust? He's one of the top 10 heroes in all of Japan, at No. 6 right now! Hitomi, you got an offer from him?!

Hitomi fiddled with a piece of her hair, embarrassed.

Hitomi: Yeah... I just wanted to ask what you knew about him, that's all.

Izuku: I think you should go to his agency! Since he's the Shield Hero, he could help you out with training your quirk along with your own combat sense; he's got a pretty physical fighting style.

Hitomi glanced at the paper again before looking back at the freckled boy.

Hitomi: Thanks for your advice, Midoriya. I still don't really know much about the pro heroes of Japan, so your knowledge is super helpful!

Izuku: Oh, it's nothing really...

(time-skip)

The afternoon rolled around and it was time to head home.

Wanda: I got my choice in. What about you, Arc?

Arcturus: Still thinking. I'm narrowing it down to Mama, Edgeshot, Gang Orca, Hawks, and Miruko. I'll have to double check it later.

Izuku: Those are really good choices. Especially with them being some of the top pro heroes.

Ochaco: Hey, guys! Wanna walk together?

Izuku: (nods yes) Mm-hmm.

Arcturus: Sure.

Ochaco: Iida, come with u—

She stops when she saw he was already gone.

Ochaco: Huh...

Izuku: I bet he already decided where he wants to do his internship. My guess is he's off turning his forms in right now.

Wanda: Come to think of it, he's been off all day.

Arcturus: Most likely due to what happened to his brother. I just hope he'll be okay.

He opens the door, only to be greeted by All Might zooming right up to him.

All Might: (laughs) I am here in a bizarre position!

Arcturus: Yeah, what's with that?

Izuku: And why are you in such a hurry?

All Might: Hi, could you two come with me for a second?

Izuku: Uh, sure. Okay.

Arcturus: (to the girls) Don't wait up too long.

The three go somewhere private where All Might tells them about the intern request. He faced away from them during this.

All Might: I'll get straight to the point. You've both received an offer from a hero who'd like to take you on.

Izuku: (gasps) Wait, seriously, who?

All Might: Yes. The hero's name is Gran Torino. He taught at this school back in my day, but only for one year. In fact, the man was my homeroom teacher. He knows about One For All, as well. Actually, I suspect that's the reason he asked for you two.

Izuku: (geeking out) This guy sounds totally awesome!

Arcturus: But, why take me in?

All Might: He was also a mentor for your mother, Claire. My guess is he wants to help pass the teachings on to you.

Izuku: Wait. So, he knows how your quirk works, too? But how?

All Might: Gran Torino was the sworn friend of my predecessor. He retired a long time ago, so I forget to count him among the people who know.

Suddenly, All Might starts shaking in fear and they could feel waves of unease radiating off him.

All Might: (to himself) Is this because I wrote about you both in the letter I sent him? Or did he watch the festival and think that my teaching was inadequate? If he went so far as to use his old hero name when making the offer... It's scary. Too scary. Damnit, legs, stop shaking!

The booths were now surprised and worried as they never saw All Might like this.

Izuku: (thoughts) All Might is seriously freaking out right now.

Arcturus: (thoughts) I've never seen a pro hero like him be afraid like this?

All Might: (growls while still scared) Anyway, it is my duty to train you. But, since you got an offer, you should work with him week if that's what your heart says. (holds out a piece of paper) Anyway, h-h-here's the-the-the-the address.

Izuku and Arc: (thoughts) Just how scary is this guy?!

They met up with the girls and were ready to head home. Unfortunately, Iida had left already, and then Arc was now more worried.

Arcturus: (narrator) After the sports festival, Iida's big brother was all over the news. It turns out he'd been attacked in Hosu City, Tokyo. The person responsible had apparently already killed 17 heroes in the past, and injured 23 so badly that they were beyond recovery. He's a scourge in the pro community and a deadly serial killer. The elusive Hero Killer: Stain.

Iida didn't say anything else about what was going on with Ingenium. Later, we were surprised to hear that he'd taken an internship in Hosu City, the same place where Tensei had been left for dead. But neither Izuku or I felt like we couldn't ask him anything about it, since he kept avoiding the topic. That's just how things were between us as we approached the first day of our internships.

(time-skip)

A couple days passed and now everyone was at the train station with their hero costumes.

Aizawa: Everyone has their costumes, right? Remember, you don't have permission to wear them out in public yet, and don't lose them or anything.

Mina: Gottcha!

Aizawa: Speak properly! It's "Yes, sir," Ashido.

Mina: Yes, sir.

Arc just pats her on the head while smiling.

Aizawa: Make sure you mind your manners with the other heroes during your internships. Now get to it.

Students: Yes, sir!

Before heading off, Arc, Wanda, Izuku, and Ochaco head up to Iida.

Arcturus: Iida, wait.

They went up to him while he faces away from them.

Arcturus: Listen, if there's anything bothering you, you can talk with us.

Ochaco: (nods in agreement) Mm-hmm! Mm-hmm!

Wanda: That's what friends do.

Izuku: We're friends, right?

He doesn't turn around immediately, but when he does, he smiles.

Iida: Yes.

Arcturus: (thoughts) I knew that kind of smile all too well. It was the same kind Wanda and I made after our parents died. In that moment, I should have tried harder to find out how he was feeling. In the days to come, I would regret not being there for him.

After getting off the train, Arc and Izuku were walking to their internship.

Izuku: Gran Torino. I've never heard of this guy before.

Arcturus: He must be an underground hero to avoid the media.

Izuku: Either way, I bet he's super incredible.

They soon arrived to what looked like a building that was in need of maintenance.

Arcturus: You sure this is the place?

Izuku: According to the address, this is it.

They knock on the door and enter in.

Izuku: Hello, we're from UA high. I'm Izuku Midoriya.

Arcturus: And Arcturus Farron. We're looking forward to—

They stop as they look at the ground as see a small old man in a yellow and white suit lying face down in a pool of blood with his intestines out. The sight freaks the boys out.

Arcturus: Fucking hell!

Izuku: Holy whoa, he's dead!

Old Man: (looks up) I'm alive!

Arcturus and Izuku: (screams) HE'S ALIVE!!!
