One Punch
"What!? A quirk assessment test!?" Everyone else said, flustered. Our teacher took us outside to the court. We were all wearing identical uniforms. It's not the most stylish thing, but it looks good. Just needs a cape. Being tested on my quirk doesn't really bother me. But then again, nothing bothers me anymore. I stood next to Midoriya, mostly because he was the only person I knew.
"But orientation! We're gonna miss it!" The girl from before said.
"If you really wanna make it to the big leagues, you can't waste time on pointless ceremonies. Here at U.A., we're not tethered to traditions. That means I get to run my class how I see fit. You've been taking standardized tests most of your lives, but you never got to use your quirks in physical exams before. The country's still trying to pretend we're all created equal by not letting those with the most power excel. It's not rational. One day, the ministry of education will learn. Bakugo, you managed to get the most points on the entrance exam. What was your farthest distance throw with a softball when you were in junior high?" Everyone turned to look at the blonde kid from earlier. Guess that's Bakugo.
"Sixty seven meters, I think." He replied.
"Great. Try doing it with your quirk." The teacher said, tossing him a softball. Bakugo took the plate, wound up and threw the ball hard, fire erupting from his hands. Wait a minute... it's him! He's the kid I beat up years ago! The ball disappeared in a cloud of fire and a flash of light. "All of you need to know your maximum capabilities. It's the most rational way of figuring out your potential as a pro hero." He added, showing us his phone. It showed the ball had traveled at least seven hundred and five point two meters away. Everyone was blown away... except for me. When I throw a ball, it hits me in the back of the head a few seconds later.
"Woah. That's impressive." I said. A few students wanted to go next, saying it looked like fun.
"So this looks fun, huh? You have three years here to become a hero. You think it's all gonna be games and playtime? Idiots." Teacher said menacingly. Rude. "Today, you'll compete in eight physical tests to gauge your potential. Whoever comes in last has none, and will be expelled immediately." He finished. Everyone gasped from shock. Even I was kind of worried. Mostly for Midoriya. The guy isn't exactly the best of the best. He may actually get expelled, then I actually have to meet people! I don't wanna meet people! "Like I said, I get to decide how this class runs. Understand? If that's a problem, you can head home right now." I dropped all expression and said one single word.
"You can't send one of us home! I mean, we just got here! Even if it wasn't the first day, that isn't fair!" The girl from before complained. I tuned everyone out, thinking about who could prove a worthy challenge. Midoriya's obviously a no. Bakugo could be tough. Besides, I'd love to sock that smug face of his. That pink girl over there... maybe. Depending on what her quirk is. Maybe bird face could challenge me. Or even the frog girl could do some damage. How she would, I have absolutely no idea. As I finished my contemplating, I saw everyone was walking towards the track. I followed them before bumping into somebody. Looking down, I saw the girl from before.
"Oh. Sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going." I said. Her cheeks began to turn pink.
"Oh! No no no! It's my fault! I apologize!" She said, kinda flustered.
"Eh, it's okay. Oh, by the way, I didn't catch your name earlier." She smiled and pushed some hair out of her face.
"Ochako. Ochako Uraraka." She replied. She seems nervous about something. I just don't know what. I extended my hand for her to shake it.
"Rika Kawagoe. Nice to meet you." As soon as her hand touched mine, I felt weightless. I looked down to see I was floating off the ground. "Huh. This is new." Ochako touched her hands together and I landed back on my feet. "I'm guessing that's your quirk? You can make things weightless?" I asked. She nodded.
"Yep! With a simple touch! Downside is if I use it too much, it makes me sick." She replied. Man, that's actually pretty cool. Making things float just by touching them? That's awesome!
"Ugh. That last part must suck if it happens by accident, huh?" I asked as we watched the fifty meter race. Ochako smiled.
"Yeah, it kinda does. So what's your quirk? It must be pretty powerful for you to one shot those robots a few weeks ago." She said. I looked at my right hand, curling it into a fist.
"My quirk... or my curse? I call it Zenkai. Basically, the more punches and hits I give and the more hits I take, the stronger my punches become. Unfortunately, I've gotten to the point where I can't be harmed and I can defeat any enemy with one punch. I've started losing touch with my emotions. I can't feel anything at all anymore." I said, monotone. Ochako covered her mouth and gasped.
"Oh, you poor thing! Is there anything I can do to help?" She asked. I looked at her and smiled.
"Well, unless you can find someone who won't be obliterated in one punch, I don't know. Just having friends at all is a good start. Most people are scared of what I can do. So, just keep doing what you're doing. Being a friend is the best you can do right now." I replied. Ochako smiled and nodded.
"Uraraka! You're up!" The teacher yelled. Ochako stood up.
"Okay!" She looked at me. "Wish me luck!" I gave her a smile and a thumbs up. She walked over to the track, touching her clothes and her shoes. I guess she's making them lighter so she'll run faster. The guy she's racing against has a giant tail. That must be super inconvenient to lug that giant thing around everywhere. The starting gun fired and the two took off. I kept looking at Ochako, giving her a thumbs up the whole time. She ended up finishing the race in seven point one five seconds. "Well, at least that's faster than junior high." She said, taking a seat next to me. I'll admit, she's actually kind of cool.
"Kawagoe! Your turn!" Teacher shouted. I made my way to the track, slouching slightly. I looked to my right, seeing my opponent: Bakugo.
"If you think you can upstage me, think again! I'll kick your ass anyday of the week!" He said. I smiled.
"You weren't saying that three years ago in the hospital, were you?" I asked. The starting gun went off and Bakugo raced forward on a stream of fire. I stood still at the start right until he was about to cross the finish line. At that point, I zipped forward, crossing the line just before he did. I began to walk away, but I heard Bakugo scream behind me.
"IT WAS YOU! I'LL MAKE YOU PAY FOR THAT!" He screamed. I got behind him and flicked him, sending him sliding forward. He faceplanted into the dirt as I walked back to Ochako.
"Is he gonna be okay?" She asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. I didn't punch him. If I did, you'd see little bits of Bakugo everywhere." I said. Ochako looked shocked. "I'm joking. I'd never do something like that." I added.
(Later)
After the relay, the rest of the trials were a blur. All I know is what Midoriya and Ochako told me. Apparantly, I did the best out of everyone in the class. After we got the syllabus in the classroom, Midoriya, Ochako and I took the bus back home. After Ochako got off, I spoke to Midoriya.
"Midoriya, I'll be honest with you: you need to learn control of your quirk. Luckily for you, you know someone who can help you learn control. Meet me at my apartment at 6 o clock next morning. We can begin your training then." I said, about to exit. Before I could, Midoriya stopped me.
"Thanks, Rika." He said.
"No problem. Don't be late." I said, exiting the bus. As I walked home, I began to think about Ochako. Why did she seem so nervous around me? Is she always like that, or was it the stress of everything going on? More importantly, why do I feel... normal around her? Is she what I need to regain my emotions? No, there's no way. I just need a good fight. That should fix me. Still, I might as well still hang around her. Just to see what happens.
