Chapter 4 - Taking the First Step (Pt. 2)
Saika
---
People around me were all running off in different directions. I assumed that people with weaker Quirks were running off to hide in the many buildings, so that was my next stop.
I had managed to acquire a decent amount of points, but I wasn't sure if it was enough for me to pass. So finding other examinees hiding seemed like a reasonable thing to do. At least, this would be my plan until the special target showed up. That would be my ultimate goal.
I felt a strong gust of wind blow my hair into my face as a figure ran past me. I stumbled over and glared at the blur that was now far away.
"Really, Teijo?!" I groaned, storming off to the nearest building.
All the buildings looked beaten down with most of the windows shattered. Paint was peeling off the sides and they had a creepy abandoned feeling to them. I stared up at the worn-down shelter that loomed over me, scanning it to see if I could make out any signs of life.
I was about to set foot in the building when I heard a loud bang, followed by the sound of buildings collapsing.
A huge wave of dust flew my way as small pieces of rubble scattered everywhere. I shielded my face with my arm, immediately running over towards the commotion.
If I could take down whoever's Quirk was strong enough to do that, maybe I could prove that I'm worth being labelled as the daughter of pro heroes Shoto and Creati.
The destruction took place further away than I thought as I continued to run. I was suddenly greeted by my friend who was running alongside me.
The dark indigo-haired male chopped his arm as he spoke. "Saika! Good, you're here! We have to apprehend this villain at once!"
"Um, they're not a villain...but I get what you mean. Whoever's doing this is really out of hand. Why haven't the pros stopped them yet?"
Teijo pushed up his glasses, all the while running. "I have no clue. But if the teachers haven't put a stop to them, then we shall make it our duty to do it for them!"
I nodded in agreement as we turned the corner to see most of the area destroyed. The buildings were crumbled; rubble lined the streets and dust filled the air. A few other students stood around the scene, staring up in shock and horror.
My gaze then connected with a familiar brunette - Kousuke.
His blank expression from earlier had completely changed. He looked distressed, to say the least, his face mirroring the expression of the students around him.
In the midst of dust and rubble stood a male. The man looked disgruntled, angry, upset, enraged. Whatever he was feeling sure wasn't how a hero should act.
Some people attempted to fight back, but the guy easily dodged all of their attacks, proving them to be futile. His taunting smile was able to make the examinees more frustrated and upset, but that didn't do them any good. The guy was just too fast.
He also looked too old to be an examinee. He had to be at least twenty years old. But his age wasn't the problem. I was more concerned about why the pro heroes had yet to act upon this. Weren't they supposed to be watching us? They surely had to have seen the commotion.
"I reckon he tampered with the cameras."
I jumped at the sudden voice next to me. I turned to see Kousuke standing there.
"Oh my-...! When did you get there?! Is your Quirk teleportation or something?"
He looked puzzled. "No. Why would you think that? I just walked over here."
"Yeah, if you can walk at the speed of light." I mumbled before quickly shaking my head. "But that doesn't matter! We have to find a way to stop him! What do you think made him so upset...?"
"My thoughts exactly, Saika!"
Kousuke and I both turned our heads in unison to stare at Teijo. Kousuke looked like he was struggling to think of something. His lips were parted slightly as he furrowed his brows.
He continued to stare at Teijo before he finally spoke. "...What's your name again?"
Teijo's entire soul seemed to die as he stood there in pure shock and hurt. But before he could start another one of his speeches, I cut in.
"That doesn't matter right now. What matters is that we have to stop this guy!"
"Right. Sorry," Kousuke spared one last glance at Teijo who had collapsed onto the ground. He turned back to me. "So, do you have a plan?"
I eyed the enraged boy warily, unsure of when he would make his next move. He seemed ready to fire off his Quirk again, and we had to be ready for when he did.
Everyone around him was bound to get hurt, so we had to act fast. I clenched my fists and faced the brunette next to me. "Did you see him destroying the arena?" Kousuke nodded. "So were you able to see what his Quirk is?"
He shook his head sadly. "No, I didn't. There was too much dust to really see anything, but it looked like he had an emitter Quirk."
I shrugged, "It's a start, I guess."
The first thought that came to my mind after our conversation was that it wasn't safe here. I was certain that everyone here was capable of taking care of themselves, but it would still be smarter to evacuate the area.
That was what my parents would do if there were civilians in this situation, right?
"Okay," I took in a deep breath. This was the time to start my path. My path to becoming a hero.
"First of all, you need to get off the floor." I pulled my dead friend off the floor by his collar.
Teijo sobbed quietly as he adjusted his posture. "I humbly apologise."
Kousuke opened his mouth to sass him, but I shut him up my clamping my hand over his mouth. "Now is not the time. We should focus on finding out this guy's Quirk."
The brunette grunted before directing his gaze onto the man. I looked around and noticed the crowd of students around us slowly thinning.
"He's bound to notice us if we stick around. We should take cover and think of a plan." I scanned my surroundings until my gaze fell upon an almost untouched building. "There! That looks like a good spot to hide!"
I ran straight towards the building, assuming that Teijo and Kousuke were trailing behind. I realised that they weren't when I heard Teijo's frantic and far away voice calling out to me.
"Hold on, Saika! I don't think that's a good-"
He was cut off by a loud bang echoing in my ears. I fell backwards as the building I had planned to hide in collapsed right before me.
I rigidly turned my head to see the man smirking at me, a crazed look still present in his eyes. It looked like a dust storm had started to form around him.
My eyes widened in realisation; he had a dust Quirk. It appeared that he was able to control dust, but how on Earth was he able to cause such damage?
I watched carefully as he sent a stream of dust straight towards Teijo and Kousuke. They both braced themselves for the attack, but the dust storm flew right past them, instead crashing into a nearby building.
At that moment I realised the true power of his Quirk. His Quirk wasn't merely to control dust, but he could use it to manipulate objects around him. It looked as if the moment the dust had come into contact with the building, the building had lost all sense of structure and stability.
The dust seemed like it was able to soften whatever it touched. It didn't completely destroy it, but it was bound to cause terrible injuries if it came into contact with any humans. If it could soften something, there was a chance that it was able to harden it as well.
But that wasn't the only thing I noticed. After a while of watching him, it became perfectly clear that he wasn't targeting students, but instead the buildings around him. It was like he wasn't intending to directly hurt anyone, but instead, he trapped them underneath all of the rubble.
"What kind of villain doesn't hurt people? This is something new..."
As I was pondering over his strange battle tactics, I didn't notice Teijo and Kousuke running towards me. They both looked distressed.
"Saika! We need to find a way to apprehend this villain!" Teijo chopped his arm rapidly.
"I hate to agree with this...thing-" (Teijo looked at Kousuke as the latter gestured towards him, obviously offended) "but he's right. We need to stop him before anyone else gets hurt."
I wanted to object, to discover his intentions first, but I knew the two boys were right. But it seemed like we didn't stand a chance.
"Kousuke, what's your quirk?" I asked quickly, snapping my head around to face him. He produced a jet of water from his hand before it dispersed.
"Water Manipulation," he replied.
I started to think hard. Teijo relied on close combat, Kousuke's sass was good, but not good enough, and it was guaranteed that the villain could easily get rid of my ice. The only thing we could rely on was my fire, but even that didn't seem like enough to stop him.
Most of the students fighting him had started to lose their energy, slowly backing up and finding a place to rest and recover. None of them had any severe injuries, just minor bruises and scratches.
It was quite odd the way the villain was fighting. It was like he was going easy on them. He probably just viewed them as weak opponents that he didn't need to worry about.
"Saika! Look!" Teijo broke me out of my thoughts, pointing off into the distance. I directed my gaze in the direction he was pointing and found my eyes landing on two people trapped under the buildings' ruins.
"What are you waiting for?! Let's go save them!" Kousuke ushered, running ahead of us.
I shook my head, trying to focus clearly on the task at hand, and before I knew it, I had started running after Kousuke.
My breathing was hard and heavy after running through all the dust that clogged my throat and blurred my vision. I ignored my stinging eyes and scratchy throat as I ducked down to try and stay hidden from the villain.
Luckily large rocks and rubble made good places for cover whenever he looked our way. I twisted my head around to look behind me and realised that Teijo wasn't there. Soon enough my gaze landed on the dark-indigo-haired blob far away assisting the injured people.
Kousuke removed me from my thoughts by shaking my shoulders. I glared at him.
"What?" I hissed, removing his hands from my shoulders.
He glared back. "Stop staring and help me lift up these rocks...!"
The only thing I could do was nod. I hurried over to the trapped students and sent some ice underneath the rocks. My ice managed to push up the rocks, allowing them to tumble aside.
I shuffled closer and slotted my arm under one boy while Kousuke did the same to the other. Once we had taken them a safe distance away, we ran over to Teijo who had somehow managed to save twice as many people at the same time as us.
"My only question is how?" I eyed him carefully.
Teijo saluted. "Why, Saika, it is because I have speed on my side!" He then motioned towards his engines.
"Oh. Right. Anyway, is there anyone else who needs help?" I spun around to get a view of the entire arena. There was no one I could see who needed help.
"I think that's all. Now we've got to deal with him," Kousuke cocked his head towards the villain who was taking down more buildings by the minute.
"But why hasn't anyone come to stop him!" I cried, pulling at my hair out of pure frustration.
"Saika, please calm down! Now is not the time to get mad." Teijo chopped his hand at me.
I knew Teijo was right. I needed to calm down. I exhaled loudly, trying to relax my tense body. If I was less stressed, it would probably help me to come up with a plan.
I closed my eyes and thought about what would work against the villain. As long as his dust didn't touch us, we would be fine. Wait...that was it!
"Kousuke, Teijo," I turned to the two boys. "I have a plan."

Yumi

A familiar voice caught my attention, causing me to scan the array of examinees that had begun to gather. Eitaro's footsteps slammed onto the pavement as he pushed through the motionless crowds. Their mouths hung agape as they directed their shocked stares at the situation that lay before us all. The entrance exam no longer felt like it was one, as the usual hitting of targets, shouts of frustration and gleeful cheers had all subsided.
Eitaro finally managed to make his way over to me. He was panting heavily, obviously shaken from the recent turn of events.
"Hey, do you know what's going on?" he asked, breathless.
I shook my head, trying once more to spot the causer of all this trouble who had recently hid behind a building.
"Is he a villain?" Eitaro questioned me again, removing the palms of his hands off his knees and returning to an upright position.
"I...I don't think so. But just by the way he's acting, I think we should treat him like one" I replied, scowling unhappily as more shards of glass came raining down.
The examinees scattered form the area, taking cover inside buildings or any other type of shelter nearby. The large group of people was slowly beginning to disperse, the threat striking fear into everyone who was even remotely close.
The stranger had landed back onto the ground, searching for the small number of hidden examinees. I carefully observed him, and from where I was standing, he looked to be in his early twenties. Did that mean he wasn't an examinee? Could he actually be a villain?
Sticking my head out the door had been a careless move on my part. The villain eyed me out of the corner of his eyes. A smirk appeared on his face as he released more glass in my direction.
"Watch out!" Eitaro screamed, scrambling over.
I activated One For All once again, praying it would finally work for me. To my shock, the glass stopped right before it reached me, instead falling next to my feet.
As the villain continued his attacks, a sudden realisation hit me. He hadn't actually injured anyone. Did that mean he wasn't actually a threat? Or...were his motives much more sinister?
I would've liked more time to ponder, but the booming voice of the villain shook the arena.
"Listen up! If you all head to the other side of the arena, I won't harm any of you. Stay out of my way and carry on with your silly little exam."
A few seconds of silence went by before the examinees emerged from their hiding places and ran off, scared out of their minds.
The startled Eitaro pulled on my arm.
"Hey!...Uh..."
"My name's Yumi Midoriya."
At the mention of my surname, his eyes widened, a sudden realisation overcoming him. His face quickly returned to his look of seriousness.
"Yumi, we gotta get out of here!"
"I know but...! Don't his words bother you?"
Eitaro raised an eyebrow.
"What do you mean?"
"He says he won't hurt anyone as long as we're far away from him. If he really is a villain, then why would he infiltrate U.A. without having any type of motive? I'm guessing he tampered with the cameras, otherwise the teachers would've taken action. And even if he was a regular examinee, they still would've put a stop to his mutiny. So why go to all that trouble if all he wants us to do is literally, go away? It doesn't make sense!"
Eitaro bit his lip, processing all this information. "What do you propose we do?"
"I think we need to follow him and see what he's hiding" I answered, taking a step out of the building. Eitaro dragged me back inside. He was panicking.
"Hold on though! It's dangerous! What if he has more villain friends and he's gone back to get them? Maybe they're planning on coming back and injuring everyone!" the boy spoke tremulously, wanting only for this nightmare to be over.
I looked back at him. I knew Eitaro and I both had the same goal in mind. Put a stop to the chaos and ensure everyone's safety. My lips parted to speak.
"That's why, we have to stop him."
