Shift: Part 8 (Shinsou)
"Shinsou." I breathed into the phone.
"Y/n?" I heard him. "Why are you calling? What's wrong?"
"I need you." I said and I started crying again.
"Stay where you are. I'll be right there." He told me. I hung up the phone and hugged my knees to my chest. I continued to cry as it started raining.
After what felt like forever, I heard footsteps approaching. I tried my best to stay quiet in case it was the guy from earlier.
"Y/n?" I heard, it was Shinsou.
"I'm here." I called out, and I watched a light appear on the ground and it got closer. When the light came around the corner of the dumpster it didn't move after landing on me.
"Y/n?" Shinsou said and turned the flashlight off. "What happened to you?" He crouched down to my level.
"There was a guy." I said. "He pulled me into the alley."
"And he muzzled you?" He asked me. And I closed my eyes, and I wanted to do nothing more than scream. "Come here." He told me with his arms open. I grabbed his arms and pulled myself to him. I wanted nothing more than to bury my face into his shoulder and hide, but the gate on the muzzle kept me from doing so.
"I can't get it off." I told him. He pulled me away and looked at it himself.
"I can't get it off without something to cut it." He told me. "We have to get back to the school." He helped me up, and I hugged myself. "Y/n, did they do anything else to you?" I shook my head no. He placed his hands on the side of my head and made me look at him. "Look at me and answer." He told me.
"No." I said. "They pulled me into the alley, and strapped this to my face. Then he threw me to the ground and took off." He sighed and nodded. He took his jacket off and put it around me. I slid my arms through the sleeves and he put the hood over my head to hide the muzzle. He lead me towards the street and had his arm around my shoulders as we went back to the school.
As soon as we stepped into the commons area, everyone saw us and ran to us.
"Y/n!" They all said and surrounded us.
"Where have you been?" Denki asked, and I slid the hood off my head. Everyone went into shock when they saw my face.
"What the hell happened?" Momo asked.
"I was walking along the street when this guy tackled me and put it on my face." I told them.
"Y/n?" Shinsou asked and I looked at him. "Why were you walking by yourself on the street?" I looked in the direction of Bakugo, he was looking down at the floor.
"We were at the mall, and I got nervous with all the people that were around." I said, and Bakugo looked up at me, but I looked away. "I got so nervous I just took off running. I'm sorry for worrying everyone." Everyone gave small glances at each other, all of them but Shinsou knowing the truth.
"It's okay." Mina said, and went along with the lie. "It wasn't your fault you got overwhelmed."
"Lets go get this thing off of you." Shinsou said and pulled me away from them.
I heard a loud smack and when I turned my head back towards everyone, they all stood around Bakugo who was rubbing the back of his head and they were quietly yelling at him. Shinsou walked me up to his dorm and pulled me into his room.
"Stay right here, let me find something to cut it." He told me as he sat me on his bed. I looked down at my hands.
"Why didn't I do anything?" I asked him.
"What do you mean?" He asked me as he pulled some scissors out of his desk drawer.
"I could have destroyed him." I said. "I could have ripped their heart out with my bare hands. I could have snapped his neck. But I did nothing." Shinsou didn't say anything as he started cutting the straps, the main one was so thick he had to saw at it for a minute.
"It's called self control." He told me. "You made the conscious decision not to do anything that you know is wrong." He pulled the mask off my face, and threw it on his desk. "As mad as I am about what happened, I'm proud of you for not doing something out of anger." I flinched at what he said, and stared at him. "What?"
"You're . . . . ?" I stared to ask, but I didn't want to finish asking in case I was wrong.
"Proud of you?" He asked, and I nodded. I could feel tears coming to my eyes.
"Yeah." I said, and the tears fell from my eyes as I laughed and covered my mouth with my hands.
"Why are you crying? And laughing?" He asked me before sitting on the bed next to me.
"Nobody's ever said that to me." I said into my hands, before wiping away the tears from my face. "Can I stay here tonight?"
"Yeah." He said. "Lets get you out of these wet clothes." He said and took his jacket, and hung it up. "You can borrow some of my mine." He said and started opening drawers to his dresser, meanwhile I undressed. "Here you can-." He started saying as he turned around to hand me some clothes, but stopped when he saw me.
"What?" I asked him and stood there in a bra and underwear.
"Ugh, nothing." He said. "It's just people don't usually change in front of each other unless they're really close."
"Like this?" I asked him and walked up to him.
"Ugh no." He said, and his face turned red as he started acting weird. "I mean like personally close."
"Oh." I said. "Are we not close?"
"I mean, I guess we are." He said. "It's a little different, and hard to explain." He told me. "Here, lift your arms." I lifted them and he helped put a shirt on me. "Does being undressed in front of others not make you uncomfortable?"
"Not really." I said. "Father always dressed and bathed us." I started thinking about Father and my brothers and how he would bath us. Applying what I have learned since I escaped, I understood something may actually be wrong. After he helped me into a pair of his shorts I stepped away from Shinsou, and hugged myself.
"What is it?" He asked.
"My Father is a bad man, isn't he?" I asked. Shinsou didn't answer and I looked up at him.
"We think he is, yes." He told me.
"Does that make me a bad person too?" I asked, and looked at my feet. He grabbed my chin and made me look at him.
"Just because you were raised by a bad person, does not make you a bad person." He told me. "You get to choose who you be, nobody else."
"That's not true." I said and looked away. "Father decided to make me the monster I am." Shinsou gripped my face a little harder and forced me to look him in the eye.
"You are not a monster." He told me. "A monster would have killed that kid that attacked you tonight without hesitation. A monster wouldn't put any thought into whether they should do something bad or not."
"So a monster doesn't have any self control?" I asked, after he let go and turned away from me as he took his shirt off. After the way he acted about me being undressed, I looked away from him. "And a good person has self control?"
"Yeah." He said. "I mean everyone has self control, but its a matter if they listen to it or not."
"So you're a good person." I said without even thinking, he breathed a laugh.
"I try to be." He told me.
"How do you try to be, if you're going against what everyone says you're going to be?" I said. "When you get mad at what they say, you listen to your self control and don't do anything about it. You go against what everyone thinks to prove them wrong, that you'll be a hero and not a villain."
"Who told you that?" He asked, and his tone scared me. I looked at him and he had an angry expression. I looked away from him little scared about what he was going to do. "Hey, where'd you hear about that?"
"Momo told me on the way to the mall." I said, and he scoffed. "Please don't be mad." I begged him.
"I'm not mad." He told me. "I just didn't want you to know about that stuff."
"Why?" I asked.
"Well." He said and he laid down on the bed staring up at the ceiling. "People like to talk, and it's easy to get the wrong idea fast. I didn't want you to know about all that stuff with me because . . . . . it's hard for you to understand some things right now."
"What does that mean?" I asked moving over to sit next to him while he laid down.
"It's not bad." He said and sat up. "The way you were raised, you weren't exposed to a lot of things. And it's going to take time to learn and adapt to these new things. What's common sense to me, can be complex for you. Do you understand?" I nodded my head.
"I didn't think my Father was a bad man when I lived with him." I said. "But after leaving, now I know that he is a bad man. Who doesn't like to listen to his self control." Shinsou nodded and smiled as I understood.
"I'm glad you can understand that." He told me. I jumped as there was suddenly rapid banging on the door.
