“Atsushi…?”
He straightened his formerly slumped figure as his dazed eyes went to your direction, his heavy chest lightening as he saw you peeking into his dark room and being bathed in light. He noticed that you were wearing thick clothes, and that you arrived five minutes after his call. You certainly did selflessly rush to his house through the autumn cold.
He kept quiet, afraid that you might hear the shaking of his voice that would pretty much show his weakness. He didn’t want you to see this part of him yet, he surprised himself by calling you for he needed your soothing company; here you were, looking for him in the dark with a worried crease in your brows.
You stepped inside, gently closing the door. From your hands hung a white plastic bag with all his favourite snacks inside; he could tell with the pallid colors of the articles inside hidden by the translucent plastic and the room’s dimness. You took a few considerate steps closer, and he was troubled if he would really let you see the somber expression on his face or not. Before he could decide, however, you were in front of him, kneeling, cautiously peering into his downcast face covered by long violet locks.
“Atsushi…?” You called him again softly, your voice sweeter than any candy he has ever tasted, especially whenever you say his name. “I’ve brought some snacks…” He stared at your mesmerizing eyes framed by long lashes, your slightly flushed cheeks due to either the temperature outside or the proximity of the two of you, your lips turned into a tight curved line, and your eyebrows furrowed with concern. The idea of eating snacks was miraculously and completely forgotten; he took your arm and quickly pulled it towards his built body, your smaller figure slamming against his. You yelped in surprise, but his arms were immediately around your body, his forehead on top of your shoulder.
Your body soon relaxed in his hold as he held you even tighter. Despite your hands being quite cold, you were warm. It wasn’t exactly the temperature kind of warmth, but it was more like just your mere presence thawed the blizzard brewing in his chest.
He sniffed, his tears once again threatening to leave his eyes. Unexpectedly, he caught a whiff of your unique scent, the one he preferred over those freshly-baked pastries. He closed his eyes, trembling violently when the sadness liquids came pouring down his cheeks. “We lost…,” he said silently, guilty that he failed to keep his side of your promise.
A loud breath left your lips. He was frightened that it was of disappointment, until you leaned your head against his and your fingers started to repeatedly weave through his long hair – an act you always did which he, although he won’t admit it so easily, found incredibly nice only if it was you doing it. Your soft, reassuring, velvety voice reached his ears, “But you did your best, Atsushi. It’s more than enough.”
When you said it like that, he couldn’t help but believe your words dripping with sincerity. You pulled away and he quickly missed your warmth and wanted it back, until your grip on his head tightened a little as it was still gentle and a pair of lips was pressed against his forehead. His heart rate quickening, you sat back down in front of him, a fleeting smile present on your face. He looked down, taking your hands in his much larger ones, and planting a kiss on your cool fingers.
Eyes closed shut, his places his forehead against yours, his lips curling to a small smile. “Thank you, _____-chin.”
And he knew it was really okay.
You are his sunshine that could brighten even the darkness of his days with just so little effort.
