A crash sounded from the newfound sanctuary Hayley and the others took refuge at.
A muffled "Klaus!" was heard from below the room Carlisle decidedly holed himself up in. He was practicing his levitation spells, finding he had nothing else to do.
He immediately sat up, old papers drifting to the floor around him as he opened the door and raced down the hallway.
"Klaus!" He heard again as he took the stairs two at a time. He recognized the voice as Jackson's.
"Oh my god." Hayley muttered as Carlisle noticed her cross the threshold into the other room. Klaus eyed Carlisle for a moment before moving to follow suit. Carlisle narrowed his eyes as he tried to catch up.
"What happened?" Hayley questioned, moving to the table in the middle of the room. There lay Aiden, dead.
"Klaus made Aiden spy on us." Jackson began, walking a half circle around the table to meet Hayley. "Instead he told me everything. So you killed him." He bit out, glaring at Klaus from across the room.
Carlisle's steps faltered as he caught up to stand beside Klaus, eyeing the body. He blinked quickly, placing the back of his hand over his mouth as he neared a gag.
"You killed him." Hayley turned to stare at the original hybrid. "One of the wolves sworn to protect our daughter."
There was a moment of silence as Klaus stared between the people in the room.
"So what if I did?" He spoke up.
Hayley raised her eyebrows, looking to Elijah.
"Jesus," Carlisle muttered. He couldn't believe it. In fact, he had an incredibly hard time doing so. It was as if everything in his body was telling him that what Klaus admitted wasn't true. Odd.
"This is what happens to anyone who dares cross me." Klaus began one of his many speeches.
"Just give us the word, Jackson." A wolf muttered from beside the man.
"Yes," Klaus shouted at him. "Come and have a go. But you'll be putting your life on the line for one who is all too willing to betray you." The hybrid moved to look down at the body.
"Perhaps this never would've happened if he'd had a real Alpha." Klaus muttered.
Jackson lunged at the man, grabbing at his shoulders and shoving harshly. Klaus pushed him off with ease, causing the werewolf to go flying into his followers. Hayley immediately moved to protect her husband, moving to push at Klaus, to which she was immediately thrown to the ground.
"Goddamnit! Elijah, do something!" Carlisle shouted, stepping toward the fight.
Elijah faltered before swiftly moved toward the group, placing a hand on Klaus' chest. The other was placed at Jackson's throat.
"Do you wish to die?" He murmured quietly, staring at the werewolf.
Hayley moved to hit Elijah in the face, causing him go stumble back a few feet.
"You wanna kill me too, Elijah?"
Elijah breathed heavily, staring at her for a moment in thought before moving to stand beside Klaus.
"If you come at him... you come at me."
Klaus smiled at that. "You lot should make better use of your time. I suggest burying your dead."
"Get out!" Hayley shouted, voice wavering.
"Niklaus, You mentioned a plan." Elijah interjected hurriedly, looking at Klaus. "I recommend you begin. Hayley and Hope are sore for the time being. They're not going anywhere."
"Shan't be long." The hybrid murmured with a grin before quickly moving to leave out the door.
-
It was quiet after he left.
Carlisle decided to stay nearby after the debacle that he nearly missed. He stood at the empty spot beside Elijah at the bar.
A few shards of a broken whiskey glass cut through the air before him. Elijah eyed them intensely. A word hadn't been spoken between the two since the fight.
The vampire rested his arm on the counter, an index finger reaching up to gently tap at a piece of glass. It turned lightly through the air at the force of his touch, Carlisle smiled at that.
"Nice job today. First Klaus kills Aiden and then you defend him." Hayley began, walking up toward the two. She turned to Carlisle. "You weren't any help either. I don't know why care about him. He doesn't show the same sympathy to you."
Carlisle's smile faltered, dropping to a blank expression. The shards of glass lowered to hit the countertop, quietly clattering onto the wood.
"I was protecting Hope." Elijah defended quietly before his voice grew more stern. "And don't place any of this blame on Carlisle. He didn't choose his soulmate."
"Sorry, Carlisle." She murmured after a moment. "And if that's true, then what happens now? Somehow I don't think that Klaus is gonna be able to save us."
"He loves her." Elijah spoke up. "I love her."
"We'll, if you do, then let us leave." She whispered.
"If you enter the bayou, I cannot protect you from Dahlia." He stood straight, eyeing her down. "Or Niklaus."
"We have a way of keeping Hope from doing magic. Dahlia won't be able to track us down." She explained in a hushed tone. "Jackson knows every inch of the bayou. He can protect us and I know that Marcel will help us get out of the city."
Elijah sharply inhaled at that, sighing.
"The only thing standing in our way is you." She finished off.
"What are you asking me to do?" He waved his hand from where it rested.
She quickly grabbed at it, moving closer. "We can't run from Dahlia and hide from Klaus at the same time. You wanna protect us..." She turned to look at Carlisle. "Buy us some time."
She turned to leave, moving to a nearby table to console Jackson.
After a few moments, Elijah looked to the witch beside him with a grimace. "Would you like to accompany me to the quarter?"
-
They stood in the room that Carlisle was beginning to feel the most comfortable in. It was filled with canvases, paints, brushes. He could easily smell the oil paints wafting through the air.
Elijah grabbed at a brush that was sat beside a fresh painting. Carlisle remembered that Klaus had just finished it earlier that morning.
"What is it?" Carlisle murmured, apprehensive.
The sound of footsteps immediately made the witch grown quiet. He recognized their stride.
Klaus stood at the entrance, facing Elijah's back. Carlisle tentatively moved to turn and look at his soulmate.
The older of the two brothers, raised the brush in his hand.
"You put them in the paint." He murmured, moving to set the brush back atop the easel. "Father's ashes. The earth from sacred ground all hidden in plain sight."
Carlisle's mouth opened slightly in awe. He couldn't decide if he felt repulsion or respect. He couldn't argue that the idea was smart.
"You're supposed to be guarding Hayley." Klaus muttered.
"She's gone." Elijah explained. "She and Jackson took Hope and you will not find them, brother."
"You helped Hayley escape..." Klaus began, stepping toward Elijah menacingly. "With my daughter?" He turned to look at Carlisle with a glare. "And you stood by to let it happen?"
"We'll, someone had to protect that child." Elijah muttered.
In a split second, there were on the balcony, Klaus' hand at Elijah's throat. "How dare you!?" He shouted before Elijah shoved him across the room, knocking down paint supplies before hitting the floor.
Klaus recovered, grabbing at his brother's neck and throwing him against a table. He kept his grip tight. "I'm a hybrid, Elijah. Why provoke a fight you cannot win?"
A shout of agony reverberated through the room as Carlisle heard the sound of blood hitting the floor.
The witch inhaled sharply, eyeing the dagger that lay in the hybrid's chest.
"For Hope." Elijah murmured, hand still at the dagger's handle.
"Jesus, Elijah, stop!" Carlisle grabbed at the vampire's shoulder. Elijah shrugged it off, keeping his eyes focused on his brother's face.
An ache krept it's way through the witch's chest. It was a tight constricting feeling. Almost as if he was having a panic attack.
His breath began to quicken, hand shooting to touch at the very place on his chest that the dagger was embedded into Klaus'.
His inhales came in gasps, short and ragged. He stumbled to the floor as his knees buckled.
Klaus' breathing was the very same. Elijah moved to stand behind his brother, hand on his shoulder, as the hybrid fell to his knees.
Carlisle noticed the grey veins creeping up Klaus' neck. Klaus turned his face too look at the witch with a fearful expression that matched Carlisle's own.
Footsteps sounded as Rebekah and Freya entered the room.
"Please," Carlisle gasped out in pain, reaching a hand toward the them. "Stop, please, it hurts."
Rebekah rushed to his side, just as Klaus' limp body hit the floor.
