Chapter 62 A Way You Won't Take

Vivian threw her phone aside and got up from her bed. She trimmed her nails and removed the nail paint. She looked at her hair-- Which had grown till her knees over all this time. She was too busy to notice that.

'I hope they grow long soon' She heard Ethan's words in her head.
"They did." She smiled.

She sat in the balcony and oiled her hair. She remembered the time when Ethan did it for her. It felt good to be free enough to recall their memories of when they were closer.

"So, over time, I just fell more deeply in love." She checked her Antabulam and looked at Ethan's name "I'm glad though... At least we could know each other better."

Fate stood behind her "You aren't gonna fight?" She asked.
"I can't go against you. An angel must not involve herself with the mortal world."
"So, are you gonna live the rest of your life alone?"

"I guess. Angels can't die but they can't live either. I'm gonna move out the day after. I should pack my stuff." Vivian finished braiding her hair "Will you help?" She asked Fate.

"And here I thought that now finally I could insult you and your decisions." Fate started laughing.
"That's pretty offensive"
"You find it offensive-- I find it funny! That's why I'm happier than you."
"Lately, it seems like everybody is happier than me. And everybody hates me without any reason."

"If someone hates you for no reason, then give them a reason."
"What?" Vivian looked confused. Fate took her phone and broke it into two pieces "Girl," Fate shook her head.

Maya opened the apartment's door and tip toed her way inside.
"I'm back from work, prez!" Maya shouted.
"Good. Now go away." Ethan said.

"Prez!" Maya had an envelope in her hand "You got a mail! It must have been laying there since morning. Check your mails!"
"Who sent it?" He asked as he took the envelope from her.
"Don't know. Oh--Maybe it's a love letter~"

"Your expectations are unrealistic." He opened the envelope and looked at the letter inside it.

The boxes were all packed up now.
"Thank you, Fate. Your magic is awesome!" Vivian looked at the huge boxes.
"Where will you go?" She asked.
"Germany. I bought a house there with the money I earned. It's far far away from here--where no one would ever find me."
"That would be a pretty boring life."

"That sounds...perfect," Vivian smiled. Fate looked away.
"Do you really not want to fight for the love of your life?"
Vivian looked at Fate "I want him to be happy so I decided to leave but since I can't, he has to leave."
Fate didn't say anything after that.

Kurosava walked towards Vivian's apartment and rang the doorbell.
"Who is it now?" Vivian asked and looked at the clock. It was about to be eight in the evening. Lucus got up from the Tokyo Tower as his eyes turned grey. He felt a shiver down his spine as the cold wind struck him from behind. It was them again. He jumped down the Tokyo tower and landed on a building's terrace. He began running as the strong wind followed him, shattering everything.

He ran up and down the uneven terrace floors until he found a safe hiding spot. That wind soon disappeared. He took a sigh of relief "For how long do I need to keep running from those free souls?"

Suddenly, the Antabulam began shining bright red. He looked inside it but couldn't read anything. There were various names appearing and disappearing continuously.

And finally it stopped shining, leaving behind a blank paper. "This seems really bad..."

Vivian touched the doorknob "Don't open it" Fate commanded. Vivian turned towards her. She took her Grecabulum and Vivian's Antabulam in her arms. "Fate--" She stood with her back pressed on the front wall. Vivian looked ahead at the doorknob. The doorbell rang again. "What is it?"

"I don't know. But, I'm scared" Fate said "I don't want to know what's behind that door" He pushed the doorbell for the third time. Vivian moved away from the door.

Finally, he began hitting the door "I know you're in there, Vivian." Vivian recognised his voice.
"Why are you here?" She asked as she moved further behind. It was Kurosava.
"I'm here with a gift, Vivian. Open the door."

"I don't want it. Go away."
"Don't say that, Vivian. I'm here to apologise about last time. Please, let me in."
Vivian stood near Fate. "So, you're not going to open the door?" Vivian didn't reply. "Fair enough," He left. Everything turned quiet and Vivian looked at Fate. Suddenly, the door was hit by something hard.

The door was constantly being hit and finally broke down. Kurosava came inside with an axe in his hand. Fate picked Vivian up along with their books. She ran out of the window and flew up to the sky but something held her leg and pulled her back. They both shouted and landed on the terrace of the building. Kurosava stood behind them.

"A free soul. I need to call Lucus!" Fate passed Vivian's Antabulam to her and flew up quickly "WAIT- FATE!" Vivian shouted and a huge black shadow rose up from the terrace floor, grabbing Fate's legs.

She tried to fly away as it pulled her back. She smirked "You think you can stop me?" She opened her blue wings as a huge blue phoenix surrounded her. She glared into Kurosava's eyes and the shadow left her immediately. She flew away into the clouds and disappeared.

"FATE!"
"Vivian," He walked towards her with the axe sliding on the ground. Vivian ran away into a room at a corner on the terrace with her Antabulam and locked the door "Now you'll know how it feels, Ethan, to watch the one you love die right before you!" He shouted and began hitting the door with the axe.

It soon broke down and he walked inside the room. She walked back until there was no way out. He raised the axe and tak! Vivian opened her eyes and looked at her choker. It was shining brightly and her neck was healed already.

"Oh! So, you're an angel too like that blue bitch. I should've realised that this choker is a key." Kurosava said. Vivian looked into his hazel eyes.
He grabbed her neck and pulled her up on the wall. She moved her feet and struggled for breath. He left her suddenly and she fell on the floor. "It's all pointless, you can't die. No matter what I do.

But, I can make sure I hurt him just like he hurt me," He kicked her face and she left her Antabulam, falling on the ground. He grabbed it and took out a lighter from his pocket. He brought it near the book.

She got up and looked at him "Stop!"

Meanwhile, Fate ran towards the Tokyo Tower but Lucus wasn't there anymore. She looked all around Tokyo, he was nowhere. She couldn't sense him either. Which meant that he wasn't there in Japan.

"How am I supposed to find you in such a huge world?!" She shouted as she flew up and teleported to random countries in hope to find him.

"Let's see how you scream when you burn alive." He set the book on fire. She screeched in litost. She felt as if her entire body was burning.
"Yeah! Maria shouted just like this!" He shouted with his eyes wide open and a huge grin covering his face.

The book stopped burning after a while and he threw it away "That wasn't very satisfying. If you can't die, then I'll make sure to mutilate your life." He walked towards her. She crawled on the floor to run away from him but he held her legs.

She looked at him and he pulled her towards himself. The black shadow coming from the ground locked her hands. She cried and he laughed "Now beg me for mercy! This time you don't even have death on your side! That position he took from me, and everything he has ever done-- YOU'LL PAY FOR IT!"

He tore away her shirt as she shouted. He dug his nails into her flesh until it was bleeding. "I'LL MAKE YOU REGRET EVER MARRYING HIM! MY ABILITIES ARE--"

Suddenly, a bullet struck him right in his head. He fell on the floor, in a pool of blood. The black shadows beneath her disappeared. Vivian got up as her wounds began patching up. She looked in the direction of the bullet's path. It was Ethan.

"Ability might take you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there," He held a gun in his hand. He threw it aside and walked towards Vivian. She looked at him and he hugged her tightly. She was shivering "I should've done this long ago" He said "Then atleast, you won't have to suffer so much."

"I think killing someone is still wrong," Maya picked up the gun with a cloth "Who will hide the evidence raise your hands!" She shouted as she raised her hand.

Vivian hugged Ethan back and kissed his neck. Maya looked at them. She seemed a bit heartbroken and slowly walked towards the glass railings. He removed his shirt and covered Vivian with it.
"Why did you come?" Vivian asked.

He kept his hand into his trouser's pocket and took out the piece of paper that Vivian had sent him. It read:

"If I disappear, will you look for me?"

"I had to come after reading this. It got me so scared that I just couldn't stop myself."
"You shouldn't have come. "
"And just sit back and watch you die? I'm sorry-- I wasn't raised to be like that."

"You don't understand. It's too late now," Vivian looked into his eyes "You have to go. Live the most of it for this one week."
"What are you talking about?"
"I don't want you to hate me but I can't stop you from hating me."
Ethan just looked at her. She sounded as if she was going to cry.

"This marriage was such a failure" She said "I'm sorry... for letting you down. I failed and I couldn't save you. I only cared about what everyone else thought of me and you suffered the consequences the most. You were right. We never had a chance to be together."

"Thing is... we did at one point. I guess that's why it hurts more."
"Yeah, I know." She chuckled "Well, to be honest I'm kind of terrified while at the same time I'm really excited, because I think I might have found something I have been looking for, for a long time, but I'm afraid I've  ruined it."

"Vivian..."
"I'm getting less interesting. The world is noticing it... and so are you." She looked at Maya. Maya looked back at her "Though, I'm glad you've found a love you don't have to question."
"Vivian--"

Suddenly, Kurosava got up. Ethan turned to look at him.
"How is it possible? I shot him right in his head!" He ran towards them. Ethan pushed Vivian away and grabbed his arms. She looked at them. Ethan looked into his hazel eyes "What are you?" He asked as he narrowed his eyes.

He smiled. He had sharp claws which grabbed Ethan, giving him a deep cut on his arm.

"Ethan!" Vivian shouted and Maya looked at him. Ethan punched his stomach but Kurosava was unaffected.
"Okay, this doesn't look good," Ethan said.

Vivian turned towards Maya "We have to do something!"
"What? But it looks dangerous. Let the man handle it" Maya sat on the railings.
"Don't you love him?!"
"I'm kinda bored."

"Death!" Fate finally found Death, sitting inside an old orchid in Newbury. "Oh, hey Fate." He waved at her with a smile.
"We need you! I found a diseased one."
"...Just let them be."
"He's after Vivian!"

He looked at Fate and smiled "She can handle it."
"What?"
"I mean, I don't want to fight. Tell her to run and hide till he disappears."
Fate dropped her book and began clapping loudly "I'm ashamed that I even know the likes of you. You deserve to die in a hole."

"You won't understand."
"That's your problem-- You understand and solve it. When I ask you to tell me what's wrong-- you're not ready to! If you do this-- You'll lose Vivian!"
"She can't die."

"Is death the only way by which you lose people?"
Death looked at her.
"This hurts..."
"Well, it should. But you know what-- You lost Margaret because you were scared to stand up for her. Now, you'll lose Vivian because you're scared that you've lost Margaret. This will never end. You broke so many rules over one girl and now at the end-- You gave up so easily? The one who should hurt is me-- Because you treat me like I don't exist! You don't care how many people are hurt as long as you aren't! You're so selfish just like your---"

"Shut up!"
"I won't shut up!"
"I beg you, please leave me alone! How can I tell you everything without breaking? Was one war not enough that you bring me a new one as I'm healing?"
"It's the same war-- Just different enemies. You have to again save people from yourself. And this time it's one of your own kind."

Death looked at Fate as she held his face between her palms "You are stronger than this and you know it. Now, it's time to prove who is the real boss here... because they seem to have forgotten it. Don't make them take you lightly. You are Death-- You rule the fears of all that lives."
