Chapter 24: Pass It On

Gosh I haven't updated since April
Well it's 2AM and for some fucking reason I've decided to update now.
So yeah. Enjoy.

"It was an accident, I swear!" I narrowed my eyes at my brother in law, moving toward him as he backed away, raising his hands as a makeshift- and rather shoddy- barricade.

"You set fire to my kitchen when my children were in the house unattended." I growled lowly. Nanase and Yura watched from the doorway, the elder seeming to feel the need to keep ahold of her little brother. Kankuro was visibly sweating, and I took a sort of sadistic pleasure from it. "You endangered my babies."

"Mu-um..." I just caught Nanase's soft protest at being called a baby, but ignored it.

"Kaien, calm down. We knew my brother's an idiot already...-"

"Hey!!-"

"and he was doing me a favour by watching them a minute." Gaara said calmly. I glared at him.

"You could have asked Temari!! She wouldn't nearly burn our kids alive!!" I exclaimed. Kankuro glared back at me, defensive.

"I just slipped while cooking and dropped some Sake on the stove! It was only a tiny fire, your kids aren't even slightly singed you crazy woman!! Gaara! Help me on this!" The brunette looked to my husband in plea. Gaara just stared at him in disbelief.

"You were drinking Sake while cooking..?" He mumbled, and Kankuro fidgeted. I clenched my fists.

"Are you trying to endanger my family??!" Kankuro dropped to the floor to dodge the candle from the windowsill that I launched in his direction. Yura seemed to find my firing of objects endlessly entertaining, the four year old giggling madly as he watched his Uncle leap out of the window. I was hot on his tail until Gaara held me back, persuading me to calm down and not get too violent in front of the kids. I sighed, hoping to exhale my anger, but agreed.

I turned to find the two children staring at me wide-eyed, half expecting them to silently back away, but as usual Nanase gave me that cheeky grin. She was used to my temper by now, anyhow. Both of them knew I'd never lay a finger on either of them.

"Mama, can we have ice cream as Uncle Kankuro ruined dinner?" The elder asked, earning a wide grin from Yura.

"Ice cream..!" He sang through a yawn. I blinked, then laughed.

"Go on then. I guess it's ice cream for dinner." I chuckled, earning a disapproving look from Gaara.

"Ice cream's not really a meal, Kaien..."

I laughed, "It's just one night..."

"Pleeeeease, Papa??" Nanase begged. I knelt behind her and rested my chin on her head,

"Yeah, please Papa?" I grinned. At that, my beautiful husband couldn't help but smile as he leaned down to kiss me.

"I guess I can't refuse since you asked so nicely..." He murmured, just before I felt his lips brush on mine.

We broke apart at Nanase struggling out from between us and running away, laughing and squealing as she yelled an "Ewwwwww!!" Yura followed, though I wasn't certain he knew why. He liked to follow his big sister around occasionally.

Gaara wrapped an arm round my waist as I straightened up, leaning my head on his shoulder. We watched our two beautiful children, and I couldn't help but marvel at how blessed I truly was.

Gaara yawned, sat at his desk, trying to stifle it as he caught sight of me. I giggled, earning a slight scowl, "Don't laugh at me, I had a late night."

Having come far from the insomniac young boy, my husband usually got a minimum of seven hours sleep every night. However, Yura was down with heatstroke- even in Spring the sun was harsh- and thus the usually quiet infant had kept the whole house awake well into the early hours... not so much in making noise as causing worry to us. I'd insisted I could handle him and that Gaara should get some rest, but the redhead didn't want to leave his son's side.

"How's Yura?" He asked, concerned, and I rubbed my forehead.

"He's sleeping in the living room. I've just managed to calm him some." I sighed, "I've never seen heatstroke this bad before. Unless..-" I bit my lip and stopped, shaking my head, "No, it's nothing. Did you need anything?"

He shook his head lightly, frowning as his eyes searched me, "Did you need anything? You came here of your own volition..."

I inhaled to speak, stopped, then smiled cheesily, "I just wanted to see your handsome face."

He blinked, then flushed slightly red, slapping a hand over his face. Then, he waved me away. "Get out if you're going to be an idiot..." He mumbled, embarrassed. I snorted, turning to leave.

"You're so cute, Gaara!" I laughed, earning more of a flush as he attempted to ignore me and resume his writing.

"Go away!" I closed the door behind me, smile falling.

It couldn't be true. There was no way... right?

I snapped out of my daze as I drew closer to the house, dropping the bag from the market as I heard a loud crash. I broke into a sprint, slamming through the door to the room that held my son. "Yura??! What happened?!"

"Mamaaaa..." He drawled sleepily. He sat in the middle of the floor, and I dropped down beside him, giving him a once over. Satisfied he wasn't injured, I scanned the room to find the source of the noise. The window by the sofa was broken.

"How on Earth...?" Yura leaned against me, heavily, face pale and drawn. His skin had a light sheen of sweat. I picked him up, murmuring softly, "What are you doing on the floor, Fella?"

He'd already fallen asleep against me. I set him back down on the sofa, grasping his hand as he started to shiver. I pulled the blankets over him, and that was when I began to detect the burning against my palm. His eyes rolled open as I gazed at his hand in horror, clamping my fingers over my mouth so as to not cry out.

"Mama... What's wrong..?" He yawned. My chest heaved, but I swallowed down my angst, placing his hand under the covers. I forced a smile.

"Nothing, my love. Shh, go to sleep now." It was all I could do not to sob, "You need to rest to help your body get back to being big and strong."

He smiled, and I could see he was slowly drifting into sleep, "Like Papa..."

I nodded, eyes welling up, "Yes, like your Papa."

His eyes finally closed, and I barely managed to make it out of the room before I dropped to my knees, sobbing silently into the floor.

His blood had healed a wound on his hand. No doubt caused by a shard of glass from the window. He had the blood controlling ability.

This wretched power had been passed on.

Gaara twitched in slight annoyance as his office door was flung open hard enough that the sound of wood splintering rattled in his brain. At this rate the door would be off its hinges soon; he really did not understand why his family members had such an affliction with bashing it against the wall every time they entered the room.

However, this irritation was all but flung out of the window as he laid sight on his wife, looking distraught beyond all reason.

"Gaara!" She cried; he was halfway across the room to her side already, "Gaara, you have to come home...!"

"What, what is it?!" He panicked- it was rare to see her in such a state. "What's going on?!"

"I don't know what to do... Dear Lord, why?" She gasped, working herself into a frenzy, "Why him? Why now?!"

Gaara gripped her shoulders, forcing her to look at him. "What has happened, Kaien? Tell me!"

She seemed to crumple under the weight of his stare. "It's Yura." She said, head dropped against him. Gaara froze, dread filling his system, "He's inherited my power. That's why he's ill, it's developing in his system now."

Relief flooded throughout Gaara. "That's it?" He loosened his grip on his wife, "Well he'll be fine soon, won't he?"

He started to part from her, but she grasped him with tight fingers, panic wild in her eyes, "You don't understand!" She exclaimed, slight desperation claiming her, "I went through this change when I was nearly ten. Yura's only four! For him to be going through it this early... It can only mean his body is rejecting it!"

The pair pretty much sprinted back to their home, Gaara not stopping to inform his receptionist what was going on. The house was dim when they arrived, cold. Nanase, tears streaming down her cheeks, flung herself at her parents as they entered.

"Nanase? What's wrong?!" Kaien asked, pausing, "Where's your brother?"

The small girl just sobbed, a distraught Hiragomi coming out of the kitchen, supporting himself against the wall. Tears welled up in his eyes, too. "I'm so sorry, Sensei, Kazekage-sama... It's all my fault-!"

As he started to cry, Kaien rushed past to the living room.

"They came and- I tried to fight- they were too strong..!"

"Where- where's Yura, Hiragomi-kun..?" Kaien asked, returning, a note in her hand and a shaky smile on her face. Tears were welling up in her eyes, too. She clearly didn't want to believe it.

"Th-they... They took him away..." He choked out, unable to even cover his mouth because of the sickening angle that his arm twisted to.

Gaara remained blank-faced. He didn't know what to feel. His son had been taken away from him. He felt like he'd been emotionally blindsided, his brain unable to cope. His wife curled up on the floor, his daughter still clinging to his robes. The Kazekage only stared blankly at them, as though he were distant from it all. Perhaps that was why he could move to answer the door when it was knocked upon.

"Ah, Kazekage-sama, there you are. We've been looking for you." Gaara recognised these two. They were messengers for the council. "The Elders were wondering where you'd got to; the foreign dignitary from the Land of Snow has arrived and your presence at her welcoming is required."

A welcoming for a Foreign Dignitary? Such a thing seemed stupid to him in that moment.

Gaara started to feel old emotions, long buried ones, creeping up on him. Sadness, loneliness, the burning hatred of those that had forsaken him creeping back up. That murderous intent that he had fought so hard for so long. It spewed up and boiled over, the council a mere shrunken obstacle in his path.

"Fuck your dignitaries. Someone took my son," he glared down at the messengers, enraged that they could possibly thing for even one millisecond that a foreign dignitary was more important than his own family, "and I'm going to track them down and kill them." The two young shinobi backed away ever so slightly as he stalked past them, tossing a "Don't get in my way." in their direction as he went.

"Gaara!" He paused, long enough for his wife to catch up to him. He was, for a moment, glad that her powers were sealed. She could remain safe, away from this bloodshed. She stared up at him, a mixture of distress and anguish in her expression. She pressed the note he'd seen her holding earlier into his palm, and Gaara stared at her. Her voice dropped to a weak whisper, "Save our son."

He gazed at her a while longer, then pressed a light kiss to her lips. "We'll be back soon."

So... Penultimate chapter is complete. In case you were wondering, the window broke because of Yura's blood going crazy. Sorta whipped out and kersmash I guess lmao

Okies. Next chapter is the last ever. Will try get it out soon CD (not now tho nearly 3am sleep now mkay)
