He's a bird whisperer.

He loves birds, but, despite common belief, his favorite is bird is a blue parakeet (because they remind him of Alex). But, of course, he loves all birds. 

He's assigned each of his friends what he likes to call "spirit birds", or what type of bird he things best represent them. Most of them are actually pretty accurate.
